About Homes For Our Troops
HFOT builds homes as a departure point for Veterans to rebuild their lives, and once again become highly productive members of society. Despite their life-altering injuries, many Veterans have embarked on new careers, completed their college degrees, or started families. Empowered by the freedom a mortgage-free and specially adapted home brings, these Veterans can now focus on their recovery and return to their life’s work of serving others. Many have embraced their roles as motivational speakers, sharing their messages of persevering through tragedy with groups and classrooms around the country; others take to a national platform to promote awareness of veteran suicide, homelessness and PTSD. Their incredible stories are the driving force for the work for HFOT.

Press Release: Windlight Magazine Changing Name

Windlight Magazine announces its name change to Kultivate Magazine. The name change is part of the rebranding of Windlight to reflect its expansion into other art forms, including music, fashion, and literature.

Kultivate Magazine will continue being a provider and supporter of the arts in Second Life and will continue providing these services to the many artists and creators in Second Life. The brand will also continue providing services to it’s real life virtual patrons in the form of tutorials and classes.

The name Kultivate was chosen for a variety of reasons. Brand founder and publisher, John, explained his reasoning for the choice of name: “When I created Windlight last year, I wanted to assist artists and to provide resources for the art world to anyone who wanted them. I also started Windlight in memory of a much beloved younger sister, who tragically passed away two years ago…….Kandis, my sister, experienced growth in more ways than one in Paris and took her photography to new heights and levels as she perfected her craft. This growth is what has lead me to rebrand Windlight into it’s new name: Kultivate.” The choice to spell cultivate with a K was in honor of John’s sister Kandis.

Kultivate will encompass Kultivate Magazine, The Edge and The Edge Gallery, Windlight Art Gallery, Windlight Bailywick Gallery, The Riff, and the upcoming Team Diabetes of Second Life Art Gallery.

“Cultivation is the art and science of growing things. We hope that you will continue to grow with us and Kultivate our love of all things artistic. Please note that our strong commitment to the arts will never change. We will continue to have our art shows, our galleries, and our many artistic events to bring you the resources you have grown to love and utilize. If anything we will simply expand and bring you additional resources to help you to cultivate your craft, “ continued John.

For more information on the brand’s name change, please visit the following link:
https://kultivatemagazine.com/2016/07/29/rebranding-of-windlight/

Kultivate’s goal is to support and further the arts in Second Life. The main art forms that the brand supports are 2D and 3D art, literature, music, fashion, and lifestyle elements. For more information please visit: https://kultivatemagazine.com/about/

Where Are They Now? Penance Sauterau

Readers from the days of our predecessor newsletter, Second Life Newspaper, may remember Penance Sauterau. Known as Penny to her friends, her articles were mostly about the adult and game areas in Second Life. Her departure was one reason the "Adult" section was closed in late 2009.

She still comes to Second Life on occasion. As it turns out, she's still writing, but for the pop culture online magazine "Inside Pulse," writing about wrestling and a few other subjects.

Interview With Frolic Mills

For several years, the inworld magazine "Best of Second Life" entertained it's readers with it's pictures of ladies in fashionable dresses and stories about culture, society, and other subjects about the Grid. All this time, it was under the direction of the same owner: Frolic Mills. Less than a month ago, Frolic announced his decision to retire, and now the magazine is in new hands. In an interview with Bixyl Shuftan, Frolic had a few things to say about his time at the magazine, and why he felt it was time to move on.

Read the interview in People.

Second Life Featured in Online Technology Magazine "The Verge"

It isn't often Second Life is mentioned in larger media these days, and often it's for the negative, such as last month when a couple in Tulsa Oklahoma was arrested for neglecting their daughter's well being, and their time on the virtual world was blamed in the press as being a factor. It's tenth anniversary did not go entirely unnoticed, however. In late September, "The Verge," a technology news website, wrote about the place in an article titled, "Second Life's Strange Second Life."

Written by Chris Stokel-Walker, the article isn't always flattering, starting off by describing Second Life as "the faithful replication of our modern world, where whoring, drinking and fighting were acceptable." And at one point one of the people interviewed claims "at one point" Linden Lab admitted "six of every ten women" avatars were actually males in real life. But The Lab never made such a comment, and it is not true. Hamlet Au, who also wrote about the article, also called the claim baseless and responded the Lab instead stated its most active users are women in real life.

More accurately, the article contrasts the ability to be and live like a fantasy/sci-fi character to "huge areas ... that look just like suburbia" in which people faithfully replicate real life existances the best they can, "an entire world of opportunities out there and (some) people chose to be couch potatoes."

Chris interviewed several people, including former Lindens, one who commented about the Lab, "after five years of working quite closely with them, I still don't feel I really know what the culture is. ... They simply never seem to understand their own product." The article ends on a fairly optimistic tone, suggesting Second Life will still be around in some form ten years from now.

More than two hundred readers commented on the article. There was some general bad-mouthing about Second Life, such as calling it for "losers," as well as comments were about the "jiggly" layout of some of the pictures on some computers. But there were also balanced comments and some of praise for the virtual world such as a well written one by Jo Yardley.

Once you realize the potential of SL and all the options, other ‘games’ suddenly seem less exciting. ... yes, SL has a steep learning curve and it takes a while for people to figure it out, to understand the possibilities and how it all works. ... But once people realize the secret of SL, they usually get excited. The secret being that you can build and do anything and if you can’t find something you like, you can build it yourself. We all have a passion we are excited about, something we love, something we enjoy sharing with others. SL allows you to do that in a way nothing else can.
