Cartoon of The Day: Not Doc Op

Taken at the Fantasy Faire. Someone was going around with four mechanical arms attached to his body. It reminded me of a certain supervillain in Marvel Comics

Cartoon of The Day: Robo Rider

Taken at the Fantasy Faire. At one point, I saw a small robot on horseback. I imagine the player thought it was simply fun. But what a real robot be thinking?

Cartoon of The Day: Robot Kitty

Taken at Club Scorn. One of the props was this robo kitty. So why have one for a pet? I could think of one reason.

Classic SLN Cartoons: Dancing on A Dalek

Originally posted on June 2, 2010. The picture was taken at Club Zero Gravity sometime before, showing a kitty dancing on a Dalec. The ones on "Dr. Who" wouldn't have tolerated such behavior at them at all, but this one was bearing it. Or considering the girl had no clothes, "baring" it.

This would be the last cartoon published in the Second Life Newspaper, as it would close a few days later.

Cartoon of The Day: Why The Robot Body?

Taken when I logged on in a public spot. I noticed someone who looked like a robot, aside from her face. So how could this happen in real-life? I could think of one way.

Cartoon of The Day: Happy Star Wars Day

Taken at the Hoizons entry point when Rezzdarnit's last location was down and logging in, he appeared there. Among the avatars I saw was this R2-D2. So why would be be alone?

Picture of the Day: Robo-Chair

Taken at the Happy Vixen. Spooked Dreamscape shows off a chair that's actually a robot walker. He never did dance with it, possibly because those metal feet might scratch something.

Blast From The Past: Zig Zag and The Robot (2009)

Taken in 2009 at ZZ Studios in Odessa Prominent. Cindy "Zig Zag" Babii is sitting on top of a huge robot. While the tiger-striped skunk was noted for adult media, this just looks like harmless fun.

SL Video: "Robotworld - Robi - Oh my Head!"

(Click here if the video fails to play)

By Chantal Harvey in Aug 2015, "Robi, a little robot. In the year 3015, we see a happy little robot named Robi, playing and exploring on an empty planet. She was left behind, when the mother-ship teleported to the next planet without completing their count to 42. 1 little robot was overlooked, as she failed to make her way back on time, looking for her head.

"Making the best out of her situation, Robi wants us to know:

"I am not broken
"I lost my head
"I was left behind, forgotten
"I alone am Robi."

Announcement: Mail-Clockworks Sought for UCPS Steampunk Roleplay

Are you ready to do what it takes to give people faith in the mail?

Are you of a most steady and sure make and model?

Are you good with a side-arm (if you have them) or front arms (if you have no side-arms)?  Do you have arms?  If not, care’ying the mail may be hard.  You may want an other line of work.

If you are a fan of steampunk, role-play, and civil service, the UCPS now seeks workers to staff its post office branches in New Babbage and Mar’kesh.  Please send a note to the Post-Mistress of the UCPS showing you have an int’rest in playing a clockwork mail servant – or that you have questions about doing so.

You are welcome to discuss this further with Nika.  Working with her, you will create a clockwork mail-servant, complete with backstory, purpose – and your own clockwork key.  You will work with Nika to spearhead new and wondrous ways to serve the Steamlands of Second Life – and to improve roleplay for one and all.

To learn more about Nika and the UCPS, please visit http://werksfromtheironroad.com – or just drop her a note.  Thank you for your time – but it’s time to run.  After all, the mail never sleeps, and neither do we.

To inspect the three offices that are now being built are attached below -

The UCPS Head Office:
Ravenwood Forest (70, 246, 25)

The UCPS Branch Office - Mar'kesh:
Mondrago (191, 167, 24)

The UCPS Branch Office, New Babbage:􀀁
Academy of Industry (193, 145, 111)

Work on both branch office structures is slated to be complete on October 18, 2015.

Forgotten City Sim to Close

A few years ago in January 2012, Gemma Cleanslate wrote about Forgotten City. After almost four years, co-owner Mandy Marseille had some sad news posted on the SL Universe forums: the sim will be coming down. "After like 4 or 5 years of existence, we are going to shut down Forgotten City."

In the forum post, she wrote that the idea for the sim's current form was, "a semi-living city to those who wanted to have a bit more lively inworld living. Unfortunately this make-life-in-the-city project was half done: lamplighter and janitor automatons plus a scheduled boat service was installed, but the city's mechanical population never came to life. As years passed we had the luck of providing housing to some very nice and talented renters, also hosted random RPs (at least we stumbled upon a few), moreover we had free super fun games on the many layers of the sim (Btw these games are still available (for free ofc) until the sim's closing).

"But as of now the income from our inworld store dwindled enough so that the sim is hardly able to maintain itself ... and thus we need to relocate the store to a 4k or so parcel and leave the rest behind to be forgotten (nomen est omen)."

A notecard at the entrance point,  Forgotten City (211, 77, 103), stated there wasn't much time as the end date was "around September 15," which is tomorrow. There are a few things do do there, an "alien shooting game," a shooting gallery, a racetrack with cars, and a winter park with a ski slope. Taking a look for myself, the shooting gallery and ski slope seemed a little bugged. The race cars and alien shooter seemed fine though.

"Thanks for the help and for everyone who came and visit (and maybe even bought something)."

Classic SLN Cartoons

From April 2008. I've been a reader of the "Freefall" online comic since coming across it in August 1999, about sixteen years ago this month. This screenshot cartoon of mine shows a reoccurring "Freefall" pun.

Tales From Podex: Computing Cash

By Bixyl Shuftan

It was a day in late June at the Podex exchange, and the tellers were busy making transactions with their customers. When things quieted down, they talked a little about goings on elsewhere on the Grid. Some talked about the Second Life Eleventh Birthday celebrations, and the activity at their grounds, saying they were going to drop by there after work. Another topic of conversation was the Relay for Life's events. And being summer, there was some talk about heading to the beach, especially since some customers had come here to get Lindens for that very purpose.

In the middle of their talk, an unusual figure walked in. He was all in metal and mechanical looking, with fingerless hands. Instead of a face, he had a camera, giving him a somewhat cyclopsian appearance. His only decoration was an "11" painted on his chest.

"Um, can we help you?" one of the tellers finally asked.

"YES PLEASE," the mechinoid finally spoke, "THIS UNIT REQUESTS AN INFUSION OF CURRENCY KNOWN AS LINDEN DOLLARS."

"Er, of course, Sir. We will provide you with Linden Dollars in echange for a number of international currencies."

"THIS UNIT REQUESTS INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PROCEDURE."

"Well, you just fill out this form. Choose which kind of money you wish to exchange, and once the paperwork is filled out we'll transfer the Lindens to your account through electronic transfer."

The metal-plated visitor did so, taking a very short ammount of time, and the deal was soon done.

"THIS UNIT COMPLE- MENTS YOU ON YOUR EFFICENCY."

"Thank you. By the way, we don't get that many customers of, such an electronic nature. Of what purpose might those Lindens be for."

"THIS UNIT EXPECTS AN EMOTIONAL REACTION TO BY RESPONSE DUE TO THE HIGH PROBABILITY OF AN INONIC INTERPRETATION."

"I beg your pardon?"

"THIS UNIT WISHES TO PURCHASE AUTOMATIONS FOR AN ASSOCIATE'S SIM DESIGNATED AS 'RP,' KNOWN AS 'BOTS.'"

The tellers had a chuckle, and the unusual customer went about his way.

The Podex Exchange is located at the Coda sim at (45, 218, 61), with a website at http://www.podex.info/. Jacek Shuftan is the CEO. Jacek recently began allowing the option to deal with Bitcions, wanting to support the independent currency.

Note: The preceding is a fictional story, written for the dual purpose of advertisement and entertainment.

Eye on the Blog: Project Shinning Complete, Gift Birthday Avatar

Earlier this week, Linden Lab stated in it's blog that Project Shinning, after almost two years since it was first announced, was finally complete.

Now gridwide, the Sunshine V2 Viewer offers even more stability and other performance improvements. The work includes better retry logic, removes old client-side baking framework, and an assortment of appearance related bug fixes. Another big feature that debuts with this update is the viewer support for AISV3. The bulk of the work was inventory-related, which not only sped up inventory operations but also greatly reduced the failure rate when performing outfit changes! So if you happen to notice quicker avatar renderings, faster scene loading, seamless region crossing, or just better overall router stability, these are all objectives of Project Shining.

More can be read (here).

Earlier this month was some news related to the Second Life Eleventh Birthday. Linden Lab would be offering a free robot avatar for all residents, available in Bay City, or in Marketplace.

This robot is sleek and ready to explore the landscapes of Second Life. Made with Fitted Mesh, you can put your own stamp on this android by playing with some of the shape sliders. Just make sure you’re upgraded to a Viewer with Fitted Mesh enabled. There are two ways to get your robot - pick it up inworld at Hairy Hippo Fun Land in Bay City or just visit the Marketplace.

More can be read about the robot avatar (here).

Cartoon of the Day: Not the "Kool-Aid" Man

This was from the "Flaying Saucer" exhibit at the SL10B, with a robot smashing through the laundromat. For whatever reason, I kept thinking of those fruit drink commercials with the giant pitcher smashing through the wall.

Reader Submitted: "Hello Dalek"

Perri Prinz, noted Second Life DJ and fiction writer, sent in this picture of a "Hello Kitty" build (snowkitty?) that's gotten the attention of a Dalek, one of the infamous robot villains from the "Dr Who" science-fiction show known for their cries of "Exterminate! Exterminate!" So why was the Dalek interested in the Japanese feline with a following among girls across Earth? Apparently only this opponent of Britain's favorite timelord knows, and he's not talking.

SL Youtube: "Vic and the Pink Dalek"

And now for some Relay for Life fun involving Vic Mornington (Victor1st Mornington) of the Relay for Life "Team Dr. Who Fans in SL" and a pink-plated Dalek.

"Victor1st Mornington and a pink Dalek enjoying a lovely date together.

"We won time with Victor1st following a Relay For Life Auction. So what better than him being reunited with the pink Dalek once again!

"Please support Relay for Life, together we can help find a cure. Please goto -
http://www.cancer.org/Involved/Participate/RelayForLife/second-life

"With Thanks to Michelle Leckrone for filming & Editing this.

"The name Dalek and Doctor Who are solely owned by the BBC, I own nothing!"

For those not familiar with "Dr Who," the Daleks are killer robots normally hostile to everything other than themselves. The classic ones are stainless steel, but more recent seasons of the show have these newer models that have inspired a few "Power Ranger" jokes from some Whovians.
