"The 1st Question's" Season Finale, and Co-Host Hydra's Farewell

Sunday December 11th marked the last show of the season for the noted Second Life game show "The 1st Question," hosted by Pooky Amsterdam and Hydra Shaftoe. Three of the top winners this year were invited back in a contest of champions.

Originally scheduled on December 4th, the show was postponed a week due to technical difficulties. And this Sunday, glitches threatened to stop the show again. Fortunately, regulars such as comedian Lauren Weyland had no trouble bringing out chuckles from the others to pass the time. Plus, there was Pooky's band of tiny friends, doing a "Tiny Carolers" routine.

~*~ It's beginning to look alot like Wootmas! ~*~ ~*~ All across the shire you go! ~*~ ~*~ Take a look at the village chalet, ~*~ ~*~ The snowmen and the sleigh, ~*~ ~*~ With candy canes and tinsel all aglow! ~*~ ~*~ Its beginning to look a lot like Wootmas! ~*~ ~*~ Tinies in every store! ~*~ ~*~ But the nommiest site to see ~*~ ~*~ Is the waffles that will be ~*~ ~*~ Inside your own front door. ~*~

Pooky tried a few things, including appearing in a tiny sheep avatar, which looked like a cartoonish sight next to Hydra's wolflike black anthro husky appearance. Eventually she logged back on in an alt, and the show continued. Pooky apologized for the delays, praising the audience for their paitence. She commented if she ever got stranded on a deserted island, she'd be confident of rescue with this group of people with her.

Phelan Corrimal, ZenMonso Wormser, Romane Levee were the previous show winners whom were the contestants for this show. Besides that it was a show among former champions, the show was unique that in the "Word Up" in which the audience was asked to judge which made-up word of the players was the best, it was a three way tie. Pooky gave each of them full credit for that part of the show. The contest was a hard-fought one between the three men, but eventually ZenMonso Wormser emerged as the winner, and the season champion.

The audience was a little sad that this was the last show until next year, but they were also sad about an announcement. Co-host Hydra Shaftoe announced this was his last appearance. He didn't have any problems with Pooky, offering to help out next episode with troubleshooting behind the scenes. He simply felt that with nearly 140 shows behind him, it was time for him to move on. The announcement was greeted with sadness by many in the audience, including one whom had just seen the show for the first time, and thought Hydra made a great co-host.

With his sharp voice and quick wit, it's fair to say Hydra Shaftoe helped make the 1st Question what it is, and wherever he goes, a number are wishing him well.

Meanwhile Back in Azeroth: Holidays and Updates

World of Warcraft made news recently with it's new commercial and plans for the next expansion at least one year away. But what's been going on in Azeroth right now? Plenty. Even if you have little to no interest in Player vs Player battlegrounds, there's still things to do from Holiday events, one having been changed a bit, a new amusement park island, and the quests for killing the big villain of the latest expansion have finally arrived.

CDS Inagural Ball

On Saturday December 10th at 11AM, the CDS had their Inaugural Ball to celebrate their new representative leaders. Last month, there was an attempt by their old Assembly to delay elections due to technical glitches, but the residents responded with a protest. Their leaders relented, and after elections were held their 16th Assembly was elected along with Chancellor Trebor Warcliffe.

The Ball was held at the Schloss Balcony in the Neufreistadt sim. The location was high over the land at a height one would expect of a floating platform. It was just at cloud level, making for some whispy visual images when looked at certain distances. Callipygian Christensen provided the music, which included classical and formal tunes.

Snow Arrives in Sunweaver Estates

Yesterday, residents of the Sunweaver Estates opened their doors to find their normally green home had been covered with snow. Not everyone was happy with this sudden change, "Ah, me footsies will freeze." "I get enough snow in real life. I ain't comin' out of my den." But others felt it added to the feel of the Holidays, not to mention it gave some an excuse to share a cup of hot coco with a friend, or cuddle up with the opposite sex near the fire.

SL Machinima: Podex Bank Robbery

Jacek Shuftan of Podex pointed out another attempt at a bank robbery at Podex. They got farther than "Clumsy Cooper" ever did. But unlike the masked man, these bandit's won't be coming back to the Grid.

Final Week for the Kristen's Viewer Project Fundraising

In October, the Kristen's Viewer Project's creator made an effort to fund continued research on the third-party viewer for a year through the British fundraising website "Crowdfunder." In about a week, the fundraiser may be canceled and further work on Kristen's Viewer suspended indefinitely.

So far, nearly seven thousand British pounds have been raised. While no small feat, it is only 27% of what's needed to fund KirstenLee's, Lee Quick in real life, expenses for a year as he would be working on the viewer instead of working for an employer.

Inara Pay managed to get in contact with Lee Quick, and asked if Crowdfunder offered to extend the time left would he keep going. Lee answered no, "No we won’t. If the target isn’t met the viewer will not return."

So for fans of the Viewer, next week will determine whether it continues to be developed, or ends up on the path to obsolescence once again.

Tyrehl Byk’s “Catharsis”

Tyrehl Byk, whom made news last year with his groundbreaking “Event Horizon” particle show last year, was a busy artist in November with his shows at the LEA6 sim. Besides his “Not-A-Knot” exhibit, Tyrehl had another particle show, “Catharsis.” It offered all of what Event Horizon had, and then some.

I was with Chantal Harvey when she was sent a location to go to see Catharsis. She invited me to go along, and I went with her. But getting there, we found ourselves in a cavern. We looked around, things slowly rezzing, and eventually one of us found a passage to a door. Clicking on it teleported us to a triple overhead platform. I noticed a few other familiar faces there, such as Gemma Cleanslate and Eymerich Lane. For a while, the radio had a robotic voice greeting the crowd, then it began making snide remarks about Tyrehl Byk. It was cut short by a gun shot, followed by Tyrehl apologizing for being late, giving a few hints to properly view the show, such as setting the view to Midnight, and telling those who hadn’t to take a seat.

And before long, the music started, along with the colorful particle flashes in the night sky.The particles were a little more sophisticated than last time, taking on the shapes of buildings, roads, yards, even entire pictures. After a while, the show took on a certain theme, more so than it did with “Event Horizon.” The first segment after the introduction could be called “Jesusland” after one of the songs played, a look at the American south known for it’s churches but becoming more and more around discount shopping malls. The second segment could be described from the line of one of the songs, “Buy it now!” There were a few money themed songs, with plenty of particles of dollar signs, pound symbols, and other currencies, with pictures of avatars living it up.

Segment three was a brief play of American Indian music along with a scene of a desert mesa. Then the music changed to “I Wanna Rock an’ Roll All Night,” and the screen was filled with lots of splashes of particles. Then came a sunset, with more American Indian music, and images of pairs of faces could be seen. This was followed by arrows flying across the screen, splashes of red, then the screen turning to night. And as the night went on, the bleak landscape began to bloom.

The show ended after about 24 minutes. When our eyes fell back to our virtual surroundings, we found another surprise, the floor was covered with pink flower petals. Tyrehl received plenty of complements, “Thank you for the great show, Trehl.” “Gotta say, came here not knowing what to expect... good thing too because I wouldn't have come close.“ Chantal thought of the old Event Horizon show, “but it is so much better now.”

“Catharsis” is over now. Chantal and I had come across one of the final showings in November. But it may appear again on the Grid again.

Camp Kawabata - Cub Scouts in Second Life

Gemma Cleanslate noted that at times a kid avatar in a scout uniform was at some of the events the newspaper covered. She decided to take a closer look, and found a whole community of scouts. Here, she takes a look at one of the scouting sims, Camp Kawabata, where the scouts would meet. But they didn't always stay there, taking a number of field trips.

Bay City’s Tree Lighting and Charity Party

On Saturday December 3rd, Bay City held it’s official Treelighting Festival. At the North Channel Island sim, the area had been given a winter look with snow on the ground and an ice rink in the middle of the park, complete with a box where one could pick up free skates. In the middle was a fair-sized evergreen tree, decorated with a number of ornaments on it. East of the park was a small amphitheater, where for a few hours musicians played for a crowd. Not everyone at the sim was dancing. Some skated on the rink while listening to the music.

“Welcome all awesome cats to the annual Bay City Treelighting festival! Great fun with you all! Please checkout all of the silent auctions "around the block" of the awesome tree. All proceeds are going to the Child's Play charity, which exist to improve the lives of kids in hospitals... and in the holiday season it's most important! For more info, checkout http://childsplaycharity.org/ - Help us raise a LOT to help those who need our support. You're all awesome! Thanks for coming!”

Marianne McCann, a noted Bay City resident, every so often would remind the people about the items about the park which were part of the silent auction. Many were 2-D avatars of various gaming characters from Nintendo games. But there were others, such as an antique Model A car. Talking to Marianne, she told me this was the second tree lighting festival at Bay City. They wanted to make it more special, so they made it a fundraiser event. The group involved was Child’s Play, “a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 70 hospitals worldwide.” The event was mentioned on the Child’s Play website.

From about Noon to 2 PM, GoSpeed Racer DJed for the residents dancing nearby, entertaining them with Xmas songs such as the “Miser Brothers” themes, the there from “The Grinch,” Twisted Sister’s “Heavy Metal Christmas,” and a number of parodies. At 2PM, young avatar Christov Kohnke got up and stage, and began singing live music with his guitar.

At 2:30, attention was directed to the rink, and residents asked to change their views to Midnight. Doing so, the tree was a dark outline for a moment, then lit up as the lights on it illuminated, making for a beautiful holiday sight. The party would go on until 4 PM. As of 3PM, over 27 thousand Lindens had been raised for the charity.

The Second Life Wiki describes Bay City as created by Linden Lab’s Department of Public Works program in 2008 as a homage to the golden age of the North American city, “between 1940 and 1965, perhaps best typified by Chicago circa 1950 and marked by a distinct deco influence."

Linden Realms Portal: Nysray

One of the perks of Premium accounts is certain sims that only they can access. Today is Netera's report of one of her more interesting experiences there: an adventure game where one gathers crystals. However, the game has a few hazards that made Netera jittery.

Pearl Harbor Ceremony in Oahu Sim on Dec 7th

The ceremony will be at Oahu (181, 22, 23)

Tyrehl Byk’s “Not a Knot”

In November, there were a number of performances of two works at the LEA6 sim by artist Tyrehl Byk. Longtime readers will probably remember him for his “Event Horizon” particle show over a year and a half ago. Besides his new particle show “Catharsis” (more on it later), there was also his “Not -A-Knot” artistic exhibit.

When I got to his “Not-A-Knot” Exhibit, high above the sim, it looked much like a nature build at first, a small fenced stone platform leading to a forest full of tall trees on a floating island of rock. Going along however, one could see letters floating with the wind through the woods. Next to a campsite was a river, with various words such as “illusion” and “prejudice” floating down, the water eventually falling over the side. With the forest thinning, the letters in the breeze gave way to words such as “apple” and “tree.”

Finally one arrived at what at first looked like a recreation of the scene of “American Gothic,” a farmer and his lady in front of their farmhouse. But this wasn’t the bald, spectacled farmer in the famous painting, but Tyrehl Byk. His voice was on, but instead of him talking I could only hear nonsensical noises. I thought he was Away From Keyboard as he never answered by questions. The farmhouse itself kept fading in and out. Next to it was the edge of the floating island, the words “Not A Dangerous Ledge” floating over it. I never did go over to test it.

Later on at his “Catharsis” set, I had a few words with Tyrehl. Asking him about the American Gothic theme, he answered “That was just one component of it. It is a very large, very complex build with much subtlety, and it comes alive more when I'm there actually doing a performance. Many folks rush through and only see the surface of it.. So much like how they navigate off-world. It's tricky to see the depth when one gets hung up on surfaces. There are also many hidden items that are in play if you look hard enough and touch/sit on many things.”

“When I'm there, there is an additional layer of confusion brought to bear and some find it very disorienting. There is an element of disconnect many people rely on when coming in-world. The meaning of the piece is constantly changing and depends on if one is there alone, or traveling with a group. The dialog changes and is sometimes private and sometimes public. It is very much like the layers of internal monologue that go on inside everyone, echoed in different ways externally.”

I neglected to ask if the “Not-A-Knot” exhibit regularly changes, but presumably it does. So perhaps next time it’s open, it will be different. The November exhibit was at LEA6 (173, 192, 501).
