April Fool's Day might have been Monday, but for the club, it had to wait a couple of days.
Rita remarked, "I see someone was ill, at cutlass, they spilled 'pepto bismol' everywhere," then gagged at the color.
Cynthia's response was to say the movie at Feral Theater on Sunday would be Operation Petticoat.
Club Cutlass is at Sunweaver Bay (114/117/757), and has events Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays 6 to 8PM. SL time.
Linden Lab just announced there's a glitch in the PBR (Physical Based Rendering) code that affects mirrors in Second Life. Part of the glitch is that bumping into mirrors, touching them with an object, or dropping a mirror onto the ground can result in them breaking.
And when the mirrors break, the person who caused it will go through a number of glitches, such as trouble rezzing, teleporting failures, crashing at sim crossings, difficulties in shopping at Marketplace, and more, for a period of several days.
Supposedly for most involved, the period of time is seven days. Then the issues all clear up.
Some people love April Fool's Day. Others hate "International Crawl Under a Rock Day" as one called it. Either way, quite a number or pranks happen. Some go well. Some don't. And a few go truly epic. The Newser got into the act with it's April Fool article. But we weren't the only ones having fun. So were many others, including the Linden Lab Moles with their "UFO" stunt.
Saturday April 1 saw it's fair share of April Fool gags, but perhaps the biggest were the numerous UFO sightings over Bellisseria. There were numerous pictures taken, and plenty of chatter in the Bellisseria group.
We'll have more later. At the moment, there's quite a bit to write about.
The reaction to the Newser's April Fools article a few days ago was mostly positive. "Well played," one put it in one Discord thread. Another responded "Joker!" In Cyrillic. Still, I did get one mild complaint about the time the hack started not being right, and one angry reader whom felt I was making light of the Ukraine invasion. The answer is no I wasn't, but poking fun at the dictator and his trolls. I did think the joke had some risk, though felt just as many would appreciate an oppressor being made the butt of a joke. Still, it wasn't the one parody over the years that had gotten the most flak. Those that describe Second Life as about to be shut down due to glitches tend to get the most chuckles and the most boos.
And I'm sure the Uighurs and the people of Hong Kong appreciate a good "Winne the Pooh" joke.
As for Linden Lab's April Fool, what they did this year was more clever than their "Rick Roll" a few years ago. It was a step above their "Pandemonium" avatar insurance joke, this time poking Facebook/Meta in the ribs with it's virtual world Horizons having a very obvious flaw - nothing below the waist. They did three Youtube shorts, and mentioned them in three forum threads. The reaction to them was very positive. In my opinion, they were Linden Lab's best April Fool joke ever: a poke at the obvious flaw of the other virtual world that was genuinely funny.
Besides the April Fool joke in the form of a few videos and forum posts, Linden Lab had something else on April 1st, They had six new last names, with a humorous theme.

Some may remember OwO and UwU from last year as the April Fool themed limited edition surnames for 2021. It seems they proved to be popular enough for the Lab to bring them back. But they won't be available again for too long. As the announcement stated, after April 15th, they'll be gone.
There were more examples of funnery. The Juicybomb blog posted a joke article of Linden Lab being bought by Facebook/Meta. The news was delivered by a Half Linden, “This transition will take place over the next few months, and we will
do everything we can to make it as smooth as possible. Don’t be alarmed
if you notice your legs disappearing; this is a new user function.”
Some games also had some April Fools stunts. Among them, the WW2 shooter "Enlisted" had a "Battle For The Moon" campaign.

The Newser's April Fool yesterday wasn't the only one around. Linden Lab had one of it's own that was a poke at Facebook/Meta's Horizon. Or rather, three, in the form of a few Youtube videos. One also parodied the "Lifelock" videos (forum post).

"Finding one's other half" is an expression meaning to find one's soulmate. Though with avatars looking like Horizon ones, it takes on a new meaning (forum post).

that was love at first sight.

With this April being a particularly bad time, with the world in the worst epidemic since the Influenza Pandemic of 1918, pretty much everyone agreed that joking about spreading the virus wasn't funny at all. Some countries warned that spreading "Coronavirus misinformation on April Fools Day" was punishable by jail time. There were also a few suggestions from some that April Fools jokes shouldn't be done, period. But with so many essentially trapped in their homes on the verge of going stir crazy, more felt the country needed a chuckle more than ever.
As it turned out, the Newser's prank article wasn't the only April Fool played in Second Life. Gemma Cleanslate was witness to the Moles pulling some foolery of their own. Firestorm got into the act, with it's "Message of the Day" appearing scrambled, but I was told was actual languages (and unfortunately I never got a screenshot).
As many of us know, with more people staying home due to the Coronovirus Crisis, the Internet has been taxed more than ever before. Nexflix has had to downgrade the quality of it's movies. Youtube has had to do the same with it's videos. And Sony has decreased the download rate of it's games. And now, Second Life has been added to the list as Linden Lab announced that due to the ammount of people using the Internet these days, in a few days the quality of it's graphics will be significantly downgraded.
"We had hoped that the situation would be temporary," Linden Lab's CEO Ebbe Altberg/Ebbe Linden stated in the announcement, "But it is becoming clear that with the growing numbers of people, the Internet is being slowed down almost to the point of Los Angeles at rush hour. So unfortunately, we'll have to reduce graphics quality for the forseable future."
The changes are expected to take hold in a week. For those wishing to take an early peek, the viewer for the downgraded SL is available. Yours truly downloaded it, and took a few pictures. The results were the graphics quality were, severely cut, to put it mildly. Rather blocky like a 1980s eight bit game in three dimensions. But there was no more lag.

Yesterday, the Newser had a little fun with it's "April Fool's" article. We got a few groans, and a number of chuckles. But we weren't the only ones pulling peoples' legs.
Elsewhere on the Internet, Google announced they had come with a "Bad Joke Detector." T-Mobile announced their "Smartshoephone." And no doubt there were a few yours truly has yet to hear.

In a shocking move, a hacker was somehow able to gain access to Linden Lab's computers and rename several hundred accounts. It is believed he or she was about to seize control of the renaming process and used it to change the names of the residents. There were a number of males in motorcross clubs given names such as "Kissyfur" and "Cuddlebaby." And there were several professors in science groups given insulting names such as "Dunderhead" and "Flatearther." But the majority of the affected residents were accounts that were created after 2010, given the surnames "Trump" and "Clinton." This includes a few dozen in political groups, given the name of the political figure in the party opposite theirs.
Numerous residents have already spoken out in various forums, demanding Linden Lab fix their accounts. Several have already stated they will not return until their accounts are fixed. Linden Lab in response has stated they are considering activating the ability for residents to change their names early, though has not spoken on whether or not the residents affected by the hacking will have their account names restored for free.

Last Saturday was April Fools Day, a day which is noted for people, and occasionally media and other businesses, playing jokes and harmless pranks. Second Life would see a few as Furry Fashion, Grendel's Children, Bay City, and the Newser itself got in the act. Online games have also played some fun jokes in the past few years, including some special games that were up for just a day. But this year, there was a surprising lack of foolery in online gaming.
In a surprise move yesterday, Linden Lab announced in a press release that it was postponing the release of the Sansar virtual world until "sometime in 2019." Partially, this is due to a Windows 10 update that rendered the Sansar viewer unplayable, and partially due to difficulties in making Sansar playable on older computers. "We thought these problems would be quickly solved," the statement read, "but our early optimism was disproved and dealing with these problems will take a while.
Linden Lab also announced it was cooperating with two gaming companies, Studio Wildcard and Snail Game, in developing a third virtual world: "Ark Park." Based on the survival game "Ark: Survival Evolved," the virtual world allows users to interact with the dinosaurs without attacking or being attacked.
"Dinosaurs have always been popular in computer gaming," the statement from Linden Lab read, "And we are happy to be a part of making a virtual world around them in cooperation with Studio Wildcard and Snail Game."

In a move that was completely unexpected, Linden Lab announced that it had been purchased by the Trump Organization, the primary holding company for the businesses and investments by Donald Trump, the billionaire and media personality whom recently has been making news as a leading candidate in the US Presidential election later this year.
"We at Linden Lab are happy to announce our merger with the Trump Organization," Ebbe Altberg, the CEO of the owner of the virtual world announced, "Our new partnership will allow us to make developments in virtual reality like never before."
In an official statement by Donald Trump, he stated he had been impressed by past accomplish- ments by enterpenurers in the virtual world, such as Anshe Chung. and was looking forward to attracting new ones. It had also gotten his attention that among the users in the Gird were supporters of his, such as those in Second Life's own Trump Organization, and planned on making an appearance inworld soon, "Second Life is full of all kinds of people, smart people, socially upward, socially awkward, I love the socially awkward."
Developments are still coming in on what is clearly a turning point in both Linden Lab and Second Life.
If you're reading this, chances are by now you've seen the April Fool's article from us, our yearly tradition. But we're far from being the only ones pulling an April Fool.
World of Warships announced a new "Jacuzzi Mode" for four toy "Tier Zero" ships, the "Bottlesheep," the "Bathyscrap," the "Pokeyboat," and the "Das Boot." Taking place in a bathtub, matches could be either two teams in PvP or one in PvE against bots, pooting toy cannons against one another in sounds that compared to the rest of the game are rather cutsie. While players couldn't earn experience points or credits, there were missions to be done for rewards. (Click here for a video).
War Thunder continues to get comments over it's putting "My Little Pony" fighters in the game for April 1 a few years ago. This year, they've brought pirate ships into the game. There's only one kind of ship of for play, and aiming the cannons can be tricky as the ocean waves are rolling. But it is possible to fire at one enemy on one side, then switch to the other immediety and give another a broadside. For all the laughs about "Yo-ho-ho!" and "15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest," it's believed this is an open test to see how the game and the players handle ocean action. So this April Foolery has some seriousness behind it. (Click here for a video).
And then there are webcomics. Many engage in April Fools pranks such as the artists of two doing a one-shot joke comic for one another's strip. "General Protection Fault" by Jeff Darlington did something different this year, an ode to old time text-based computer adventure games.
April Fool's Day pranks have a long tradition here at GPF. For 2016, I had the idea of replacing the front page with an old style computer screen, like and old DOS oe UNIX prompt, or, even better, something related to old home computers like the Commodore 64 or TRS-80 Color Computer. I wanted it to be able to play a game of some sort, something that would hearken back to the simple games I played as a kid.
The comic itself started in 1998, and after almost two decades has gone through a number of plots with characters going through a lot of changes. One can also find April Foolery in other comics, but Darlington's 1980's throwback is almost certainly the most unique.
