Cartoon of the Day: Grin and Bear It

From Club Furbidden. Panda avatars, for some reason, are uncommon on Second Life. They certainly stand out. The girls are cute. But there could be, other reasons.

Raglan Map Funnery

Screenshot of the map over the Raglan Shire sims. Not sure what bear is being referred to here, but the word "stinky" is almost never used to describe a waffle in the most noted community of tinies.

The Hairy Bear and Maiden Fair

The Fantasy Fair has been a big thing this week. But it wasn't the only Relay event this week. On Wednesday April 25, Relay for Life Team "Game of Thrones" held a fundraiser event. Called "The Hairy Bear and Maiden Fair," there were a number of prim bears around that occasionally growled.

There were also a number of games around, such as a wack-a-mole spinnoff "Wack A Pirate." And there was lots of dancing to music.

Following the event, the team announced, "We want to give a special thank you to everyone that came out to the GOT COOP TEAM event HAIRY BEAR AND MAIDEN FAIR  We raised 22400 lindens in two hours. Way to go everyone. You are all assume thank you so much."

Raglan Shire Map Follies

About a year ago, The Raglan Shire region was the scene of some map madness. Last week, it started up again, with someone skywriting "Bears Smell" over the sim that "bears" the region's name. What local ursines had to say about the statement is unknown.

Yesterday when I looked, the message over the sim was gone, but over Raglan Galaxy was a new one: "Frog Gang Was 'ere.' Just who the "Frog Gang" would be is unknown, though Frogg Marlowe of "Jaycatt and Frogg" can be ruled out.

What mayhem on the map will be next, time will tell.

The Madcap Map Mayhem Continues at Raglan

In what has become an ongoing situation since November, the Raglan Galaxy sim has been subject to a series of pranks by one or more individuals. After a "Wootmas" truce, On New Year's an overhead look at the map showed things were looking rather sheepish. But over the next few days, the "sky graffiti" would change, as Linn Darkwatch would post on Facebook a couple days ago.

"The skies over Raglan Galaxy seem to be in a graffiti war. January 1st there was a sheep with Baa Baa Baa. By Jan. 10th it had turned into a grumpy cat face with Baa Baa Baa. This evening we have an unbearable situation."

There were a few chuckles and comments of mock outrage afterwards, "This is scandalous, something should be done, where is the Law?" Someone asked how this was being done, and Linn offered an answer, "Objects above a certain height don't show on the map - that's why the space station doesn't show on the normal view of Raglan Galaxy. The huge blue prim, words, and picture are all placed just below the space station - high enough not to be seen from the ground, low enough to show on map view. If you want to know who did it, do what I did: jump off the space station and fall a short distance, then fly when you see the blue go past you, and inspect the prims to see whose they are. There's more than one person in on this gag, but I'm not telling who!"

So what kind of tom foolery is next for Raglan Shire? It's just a matter of time before we find out.

No Butts About It, More Raglan Map Funnery

Just a few days after we reported on the "Cats Rule" sky graffiti that appeared over the Raglan Galaxy sim that was clearly visible on the Second Life map in the middle of the Raglan area, Linn Darkwatch posted on Facebook that something new had popped up. The words were not gone, but changed

There was no explanation as to who was the "butt" of this joke, though there was a little chatter about it, "Who ever did do this is a greefer, but must be clever to put letters over a full sim!" "I think ish just a Tiny having fun."

But a few days alter, another peek at the map showed the letters were gone. So after about a week, this set of hijinks of the tinies of Raglan Shire had come to an end. But Raglan being Raglan, there's little doubt something will happen soon.

Cartoon if the Day

From the Newser beach party at the Happy Vixen last month. Mikati Slade's ursine friend looks like he was "bear-ing" in mind what to take over.

The Simon Linden Bear Hunt

Last week I wrote about a skiing place in Wengen. Something caught my eye when I was near the summit. I was looking around to make sure I did not miss any options for the skiiing when a tiny object sticking out of the snow caught my eye. Being a nosy reporter I cammed in on it and clicked.

“Hi - Do you want a Simon Linden bear? You'll need to say all four of the magic words you picked up on the trip. If this makes no sense, chat 'help' and you'll find out.”

Wow I thought , you don’t see Linden bears like you used to years ago. They are hard to come by. “

"I didn't get the magic words.   Did you type them in chat?   Touch me to try again.”

I was too far away so moved closer and tried the word help again.

”Glad you made it here, Gemma Cleanslate.  I hope you enjoyed the view. Here is some more information.” And I was handed a notecard.

“Do you want a Simon Linden Bear. These are no longer just given away to everyone who comes along ... you have to go on a treasure hunt to find one. To get a  bear, first go to the .... and look for a bear.   Click on him and he will tell you what to do next.  You'll have to answer a few simple questions. On the way, you'll get several notecards with instructions and 'magic words' that are needed for the next step.   Keep these - if you get stuck, go back and read them carefully. You will also need all of the magic words at the end to receive your bear. Good luck! - Simon Linden  P.S.   If you get totally stuck, or there's something not working right on the quest, please send me an IM“

This point where I was standing in the middle of nowhere at the top of the ski lift was END of a quest. Swell, now I had to find the beginning . I was directed to Simon Linden’s office in Linden village as the place to get the first clue and here is the address . http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Denby/211/36/33

I am not going to reveal anymore ... it is a hunt .. so I will leave you here in Denby at the office if you want to go follow the clues and get your bear. I got mine!

Now I want to find out if any other lindens are having quests for their bears. I will let you know. Maybe this is not new but it is new to me and maybe to you .

Eye on the Blog: Linden Lab Marks SL10B With Special Edition Bear Avatar

Linden Lab's involvement with SL9B was very little. For SL10B, as expected the Lab is leaving the celebration event to the residents. But this time they have a gift for the residents, and a contest involving the gift, which were announced in the Linden blog entry this week: "Celebrate a Decade of Second Life."

This month marks ten years since Second Life first opened to the public in June of 2003! We’re incredibly proud of Second Life’s success and longevity and we hope that all of you are too - it’s thanks to everyone who has made Second Life part of their lives over the past decade that we’ve reached this major milestone.

After the Valentine's Day blunder, one could be pardoned for thinking the Lab would be offering a paltry or unwanted gift. This time, the Lindens put a little thought, and humor, into their present for the residents. For the first eight birthdays, the Lindens offered a free teddy bear (the SL9B bear was made by Sway Dench). As it turns out, the Lab is offering an SL10B bear this year, but not a teddy bear. They're offering a bear avatar.

... you can get a free, special-edition SL10B avatar on the Marketplace. This avatar is made with some of the new Materials features and will look even better once that Materials Viewer launches (you can also check it out with the Materials Beta Viewer). Visit the SL10B Marketplace and get your commemorative avatar today - they’ll only be available until the end of June!

The past ten years have seen Bears play an important part of the Second Life experience. To pay homage and celebrate the history of this noble animal, we have created a limited edition SL10B Bear avatar that comes ready to have a good time!

The avatar is no teddy. It's a realistic-looking bear with teeth and claws. So did this ursine end up bombing? On the contrary, it's proven to be a hit with residents. The Marketplace page was offering one positive review after another, "Love the bear!" "Awesome!" "This bear changes accordingly with any shape you put on without glitching out."  "I have looked and bought most bear avatars and I can say this is one of the best I have seen so far, that it's free is great and the clothes are a separate option I like better."

Among those commenting was personality Crap Mariner, whom reacted by creating a Flickr page inviting people to add bear pictures to it, "Looking forward to seeing what fun folks have with it." And so far he's had a good response, with a number of people sending numerous picture of the avatar, often having fun. There were a couple of bears with guns (bear-ing arms?).

While not a complaint, there were a number of residents whom wished a female bear was available. SL reporter DrFran Babcock had a response of sorts by dolling up her bear av.

Besides the bear avatar, Linden Lab it also having a contest based on it.

We’re also kicking off an SL10B Snapshot Contest! Start snapping your celebratory images and get ready to share. Top prize is free use of a homestead for four months, and second and third prizes are free use of a homestead for two months.

The Lindens are offering a few other presents, baseball caps and T-shirts, both regular and mesh. But it's the bear that steals the show.

For the first time in two years, Linden Lab is getting some birthday cheers from the residents as they happily accept their present and aren't "em-bear-essed" to show their praise.

Linden Bears for Japan Tsumani/Earthquake Reflief

With Japan devastated by the worst earthquake ever recorded there, and the ensuing tsunami that sent a wall of water that swept miles inland, people are looking for ways to help. Linden Labs is among those collecting funds for charity, by selling teddy bears with proceeds going to the Red Cross.

Our thoughts are with all of those who are suffering in the devastation caused by the earthquakes in Japan and the tsunami in the Pacific. We encourage all Second Life Residents to support the relief efforts however they can, and we would like to help.

We have created a couple of special Linden Bears (one sitting, one wearable) and set them for sale. We will donate all proceeds from sales of our bears to the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief efforts of the American Red Cross.

Prices for the bears range from 300 Linden dollars to 3000L.
