Cartoon of The Day: Christmas Segway

Taken at EAW. Looks like this segway rider got decorative. Or maybe, it was someone else's doing.

Press Release: Lighted Boat Parade 2024

BAY CITY TO HOST ANNUAL BOAT PARADE

Event will include skate party

BAY CITY, SL (13 December, 2024) - Bay City will show their holiday spirit with a lighted boat parade launching from the New Port Yacht Club and traveling the waters to Uccie's Lighthouse, then north to the Bay City Fairgrounds. The event will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on the 19th, and will finish with a skate party in the Fairgrounds, with music provided by local musical celebrity DJ GoSpeed of KONA Stream.

Participants from across the grid are welcome to join in: many mesh boats come with party lights and other options, but if the boat doesn't have lights, we'd recommend adding some, either by editing them onto the boat, or creating a lighting rig you can wear in advance. Or you may visit Uccie's Lighthouse in Luna Palisades or the Bay City Fairgrounds in North Channel to view the parade. Bleachers are provided at the latter location

Donation bins will also be present at the event, with all proceeds going to Child's Play Charity. Child's Play is a 501c3 non profit organization offers online communities such as ours an opportunity to help seriously ill children around the globe during their hospital stays with the purchase of games and gaming equipment. Thus far in the 2024 season, Bay City has raised L$241112 for the charity.

Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab® and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest group for Residents of Bay City.

For more information, or to participate in the event, please contact Marianne McCann.

Cartoon of The Day: "Tree-Mendous Outfit"

Taken at Club Zero Gravity. Looks like someone decorated her outfit with some tree lighting. But yes, it does make for a "tree-mendous" look.

SLEA3 - A Dark Star

On the Destination Guide, there's an exhibit at the Second Life Endowment for the Arts area called "A Dark Star." Checking it out, the place, and it's two sister locations at the SLEA3 sim, were very well designed with striking lights and landscapes. Bixyl Shuftan would take a look at the place, and have a few words with designer Gem Preiz.

Cartoon of the Day: Making Christmas Drag On

Taken at Club Cutlass. The normally large DJ Geerkil shrunk down so he could join the crowd. As for why wearing the Christmas lights, I could think of one reason.

Christmas at Devon Dream

There's a number of Christmas displays across Second Life, some large, some small. One I see every year is in Devon Dream, made by Safra Nitely. After most of the job was done, Safra invited me to take a look around. While she had been building for less than a day, already plenty had been done.

The Flight 93 Memorial Show, And Other September 11 Events

The events of September 11 2001 were about a generation ago, but the images people saw and the lives lost have not been forgotten. In Second Life, there were memorials to those lost, as well as various events in their honor. The Newser was at a few, notably the light show at the Flight 93 Memorial.

Marianne McCann's Last Fireworks For Summer 2018

Every Saturday night in the summertime at 8PM SL time, Marianne McCann of Bay City likes to head to the schoolhouse at Livingtree, invite her friends over, and shoot off a few fireworks. But Saturday September 1 would be the last Saturday night before Labor Day. And thus this would be the last one, "So, tonight is it! My last firework show of the Summer! It'll start at 8:00 p.m. SLT, but you might want to come a bit early and grab a seat. Come on down to Livingtree, if you wish!"

As the crowd watched, Marianne lit off firework after firework. "Good thing the school is fireproof," someone mused, "Well, bricks don' burn too easy maybe." Down below, DJ GoSpeed Racer played songs such as "Summer Moved On" by A-Ha, "September" by Earth Wind and Fire, and "Back To School Again" by the Four Tops. A few would hit the ground, and result in colored clouds on the ground, "Almost drug induced lights."

At 8:28, GoSpeed was playing her ending theme, "Man or Astroman.""I end all my Fireworks sets with this tune," she explained. The crowd applauded, "Another awesome summer of fireworks." "Only 9 months until Summer of 2019!" It was mentioned that "Hot Bay City Nights" didn't take place this year due to the person who usually made the plans being unavailable. So with the fireworks gone, Bay City has several weeks until the next event: the Creepy Crawl.

And with the rainbow of lights, the fireworks were over, at least until next year.

Marianne McCann's Last Fireworks For Summer 2016

Bay City's Marianne McCann is noted for a number of things. Among them, her firework shows at 8PM every Saturday night during the summer. Starting with Memorial Day weekend, she lit off her pyrotechnical displays every week. But with Labor Day weekend, the traditional end of summer, it was time for the last hurrah. And around 7:45PM on September 3, she announced to all on her friend list this would be the last show for the year.

The firework show as always took place in the Livingtree sim at "Kick the Can," a school building for SL kids. The fireworks were taxing to the location's fire alarms, "Oh no, not again!" But for the onlookers, the response was all "Oooooo"S and "Ahhhhh"s. GoSpeed Racer of KONA Radio provided the tunes. Among those there was Uccello "Uccie" Poultry, former Miss Bay City and the writer of the Poultry Report blog, and Crap Mariner, a SL personality whom has been more low key recently than in the past.

A few of the fireworks hit a little low, such as this one right here which created a flash of green light. One other obscured the immediate area around with mostly smoke.

At the end of the show was the rainbow display. And with that came the end of the firework shows, at least until next year. Starting Memorial Day Weekend in 2017, Marianne launches her rockets once again.

Announcement: First Annual Blake Passage Christmas Lights Boat Parade

MarkTwain White posted the following on the Virtual World Sailing Forums.

"Be sure to put this Saturday, December 12 on your calendar. At 10AM  the 29 region Blake Passage area will host first annual Blake Passage Christmas Lights Boat Parade.

"The residents of Blake Passage are working on getting their homes, docks and boats decorated to welcome all of us to join them for this special holiday event which will become an annual tradition. Get your boats decorated for this special night time parade as we celebrate the holidays with our festively lit boats and cruise from Skagway (the heart of the Blake Passage regions) down to the Hollywood sim where DJ Benny the Boozehound will rock the Bowl with music to listen to while lined up to get under the mistletoe.

"Please decorate your boats responsibly avoiding adding any Grinch inspired lag to the event. No Mega Yachts please. Sailboats will proceed under power with sails down. This is a cold evening event based in general sims. We ask that our topless cruising friends bundle up on this one special night and dress for the season."

MarkTwain would later state, "The inspiration for The Blake Passage Christmas Lights Boat Parade is the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade which will be holding it's 107th annual parade later this month."

Reader Submitted: Goodbye SL11B (Or Maybe Not)

Zia Larnia, whom was among those attending the last performance at the SL11B Cake Stage by Laz Dresler from 10PM to Midnight SL time on Sunday June 29, took these pictures of the fireworks show that started at 11PM

While some rockets made it outside the stage area, the real treat was inside. Everyone was dancing amongst the lights.

And so, the Second Life Eleventh Birthday Celebrations officially came to a close. But this is not the end. The exhibits will still be up for several more days. Some exhibits will also have their own smaller parties this time, including the SL Newser Exhibit, which will have one today at 2PM SL time at SL11B Fascinate (78/87/21/)

Cartoon of the Day

By Xymbers Slade

For those who don't know, a "facelight" is an attachment in Second Life to make the face of one's avatar look slightly brighter and a little easier to see when the light is getting dim (doesn't work if your av is too different from human).

Looks like this girl tried to tweak the settings and got a little too much. ;-)
