A Personal Change: Upgrading to Mesh

Earlier this month, I stated I was working on upgrading my avatar from the DSD Fox that I've had for a couple years, which in turn was an upgrade from the Luskwood fox avatar I had as my main look for over a decade. And with a little, actually a lot, of help from Charlee Amethyst, my new "fox reporter" look is done. There might be a small tweak or two more, but here it is.

Mesh can be quite complicated, at least from my point of view as you often need to fit your avatar to match the clothes, or avatar parts such as digigrade feet. But with Charlee's help came up with a new look, which required getting new pants and a new shirt and jacket. So gone is the green shirt that was a reminder of my Runescape days, the freebie cargo pants, and the camel jacket that I got with my first payment from James and Dana's SL Newspaper. All that's left of my old look is the fedora, with it's press tag later added on made by my late close friend Alleara Snoodle.

So this will be my new main look. The DSD is still a great avatar, and I'll likely still be wearing it at some themed events. But it had a higher complexity, and showed more lower leg when wearing pants. And the people behind it are no longer active and thus the avie is unsupported. There's also that my new appearance just seems and feels a few years younger.

I'll likely be spending some time updating other avatars of mine (with help). But the one that's my image as Second Life's "fox reporter" and "fox news" has been updated.

Remembrance

Yesterday, a family member close to me departed (some of you know who she is). She had cancer, and despite surgery it had come back and spread. She spent her last days at home, and passed peacefully.

The idea of virtual worlds was a bit beyond her, but she was pleased I had a following online, and was putting the spotlight on the good people were doing, notably the Relay for Life in Second Life. And with her passing, I have more reason to cover it than ever.

Newser updates over the next few weeks are likely to be sporadic due to dealing with the details, as well as pondering. A number of Relay track sneak peek pictures have been uploaded ahead of time, as well as a few articles and press releases.

To those whom were there for me with words of support, or even just listening, thank you.

A Personal Change: Updating My Avatar

For years, my everyday appearance in Second Life was identifiable by two things. One was my fedora and overcoat. The other was my Luskwood red fox avatar. For over thirteen years despite numerous changes in Second Life, while I would occasionally change briefly for themed parties and holidays, I continued to use it as my main look. More than a few kept asking me to change, and I kept answering not until I found a look that looked right. But a few months ago, I finally found one that just might work.

533 Million Facebook Users Personal Data Leaked Online

Personal data from 533 million Facebook accounts was discovered to have been leaked online. The data comes from users from over 100 countries, "including over 32 million records on users in the US, 11 million on users in the UK, and 6 million on users in India. It includes their phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, bios, and, in some cases, email addresses."

The leak was revealed a few days ago on April 3 by chief technology officer Alon Gal of Hudson Rock, a cybercrime intelligence group. It was posted online on a hacking forum by someone, and "available to anyone with rudimentary data skills." Gal would post his findings on Twitter, "I have yet to see Facebook acknowledging this absolute negligence of your data."

Facebook responded that the reported data was the same as that of a 2019 data leak, "We found and fixed this issue in August 2019." But as many people continue to use the same phone numbers and email addresses, the data could still potentially be useful for scammers and other online schemes.

The leak is being investigated by Ireland's Data Protection Commission, which stated they will work with Facebook to make sure it's claim is true. Joe Tidy of BBC News commented, "The database has likely changed criminal hands many times before now being offered for free."

Reflections

It hasn't been an easy week for me. Someone I was close to in real life passed away a week ago, which left me pondering much how he meant to me over the years. While the subject of what I write about confused him sometimes, he did appreciate me (and others on the team) writing about the Relay for Life and veterans' charities, as well as 9/11 remembrances.

To those whom were there for me with words of support, or even just listening, thank you.

"Your Mother Has Cancer"

Deaflegacy told be recently it was her mother's birthday. It was a happy occasion in the past, but today it was a sad reminder as she had passed away almost five years ago, from cancer. In her article today, she writes about her last time with her mother, and goes on to say the cause of her death is why she supports the Relay for Life in Second Life.

In the latest two letters, the first reader asks about how to handle people whom just won't respond to being talked to. Named after Dr. Phil, whom appeared in Second Life some months ago then mentioned the virtual world on his show, "Dr. Philly" will handle any questions from you the readers about virtual relationships, disputes with friends, or any other "people" issues, and offer a little advice on how to handle the matter.

Six Years of Reporting

It was six years ago last month in which an important personal event took place in the course of my Second Life. Only a few months before had I began logging in on a regular basis, visiting places, and going to events such as the 2007 Relay For Life Walk. I came across Luskwood, which became my first hangout, and came across a friend there, who would introduce me to the STA area. Wanting to know more about Second Life, I began looking up websites, which led to blogs, and newsletters. Among them, Second Life Newspaper by JamesT Juno and Dana Vanmoer.

It wasn't long before I saw a request from James and Dana for reader submissions, pictures or articles. I went ahead and sent some of both. After this had been going on for a couple weeks, I got an email asking to drop by their office. And after a brief meeting, I got a job as one of their reporters. This would be my first job in Second Life, and one that would prove to be a success.

I had some experience as a science-fiction writer, doing stories and posting them on a webpage. But here, I was getting more of an audience. In real life, I took pride in keeping up with the news, and here I was helping to cover it. I wore the title of "reporter" proudly. As a reporter for Second Life Newspaper, I had the option of specializing, doing certain kinds of articles. I prefered to do a variety of subjects, people, places, things, events, and more. I even took on an adult subject once, though wrote it so it was fit for a real life newspaper.

Eventually, James and Dana made me the paper's "Office Manager," which meant updating the paper on days they were late doing so. I was happy to have the job, technically being third in charge. Though after a while there was trouble. One of the sponsors was a land baron whom went bankrupt, and the paper never quite recovered. Then James and Dana's real life problems became too much to ignore. And so with great reluctance they made the decision to close Second Life Newspaper.  After talking with the rest of the team, we started a new paper that took over when the old one folded, and I took on a new role: editor.

Being the editor meant I would be busier than ever (one reason this column is a month late). I would be the one responsible for the team, and the one paying it's salaries and finding revenue. Though it's also meant prestige. While a few were a little less than happy to see me, especially in the days when the self described tabloid the "Herald" was around, most welcome the sight of the short Luskood fox. The paper has grown in readership from about 2000 readers a month in June 2010 to over 17,000 in October 2013.

Second Life has changed as well. When I began writing, the virtual world was frequently in real life news, even prime time television shows. And it was growing in numbers. We didn’t have the numbers of “World of Warcraft,” but there was plenty of optimism, and Philip and Linden Labs, despite their blunders, still had dreams of a world of possibilities for residents: “Our World, Your Rules.”

Today, Second Life has demonstrated again and again throughout its ten year history an amazing range of possibilities of what can be accomplished here. But seldom does it make major network news any more, usually mentioned only in computer and science journals. The original Lindens are gone, and the Lab has distanced itself from the residents. Much of the optimism older residents once had has been tempered by the Linden's questionable strategy over the virtual world, such as the recent decision to change the terms of service to state they have the right to sell content uploaded by others. The phrase "Our World, Your Rules" has long ceased to be the slogan of the place, replaced with vague statements seen so often with other corporations.

But Second Life’s epitaph has been written time and time before. And despite the setbacks it continues to go on, even prosper. Not because of the Lindens, but the residents whom have demonstrated time and time again their creativity.

Special thanks goes to my teammates, Gemma Cleanslate and Grey Lupindo,  Grease Coakes, Becky Shamen, and of course DrFran Babcock. And thank you to those whom wrote for a while, but had to hang up their pen for one reason for another. You've helped encourage me and keep me going. It's been a great privilege being part of this fine staff of reporters.

A thank you to others who helped inspire me all these years, the friends I've made over time, such as my neighbors at the Sunweaver and Angels Estates, the Relay For Life and the Steelhead community, and others whom are more numerous than I have time to mention.

And of course a thank you to you the readers.

It's been a pleasure covering the news across Second Life for you these six years, and hopefully I'll continue to do so for many years

Ask DrFran: "A Buddy Comes Out"

In recent real-life news, the topic of homosexuality has been making headlines over the issue whether or not the state should recognize gay partners as married. It's not an issue in Second Life as partners could be same-gender from its start. But there can still be problems. DrFran recently got a letter from a resident whom in the past a good friend of his "came out." So what happened, and what did DrFran have to say on the matter?
