Cartoon of The Day: Turkey Sighting

Search for "Turkey" on Second Life Search, and what comes up isn't the bird, but the nationality. There's a number of clubs in SL aimed at Turkish residents. It's a reminder that this virtual world isn't just for Americans and Europeans, but all over. That and just because someone's from the Middle East doesn't mean they don't know how to party (some other places there are a different story).

Tex Tree Farm

Gemma Cleanslate's search for Christmas-themed places took her to one that touches on an old-fashioned tradition, chopping your own tree. This was at the Tex Tree Farm, owned by Peppermint Twinkles. There, one can chose what kind of tree to take home, drop by The Glacier Restaurant for a meal or drink, and drop by the Red Barn for Christmas decor.

The Newser has been informed that Luna Lunaria (apelles.luna) has passed away. She was known as a builder and writer.

From her profile:

find each of you to be so beautiful in so many ways, it is beyond words. Thank you for making virtual so rich. Much love to you all :-)

Spiritual seeker, writer, and creator / merchant on Wolf Territories Grid, Kitely Grid, Utopia Skye, Digiworldz, and Second Life, with smaller presences on Mobius Grid, Friends Grid, OSGrid, and others. Creator of Lunaria Emporium and Luxor, among others.

I am currently involved in projects outside of SL, but I do try to come in once or twice a week. If you leave a message I will see it and respond the next time I'm on. All my new work is being done in opensim on a grid called Wolf territories and is much better and larger than anything I can make here. Here is their website: https://www.wolf-grid.com/. My regions there are Lunaria Emporium and Luxor.

KathyZog Destiny Offers Popular Music To Church Services

Second Life is more than just pixels, but also the people behind the thousands of avatars that make up our virtual world.  Today, we look at KathyZog Destiny. She is a longtime resident and an accomplished DJ, as well as a virtual church pastor who overcame a real-life disability. Netera Landar would interview her about how she came to Second Life, and what she does here.

EOTB: New "Second Life University" Video, "Getting Started with the Avatar Welcome Pack and Project Zero"

Remember the Second Life University Youtube videos? From 2022 to 2023, Linden Lab would occasionally release an instructional video about some aspect of this virtual world such as the controls of the viewer. They would continue until August 2023, then stop.

On Monday November 22, Linden Lab announced it had done a new Second Life University video, covering two subjects, the Avatar Welcome Pack, and "Project Zero," the browser-based viewer.

Class is back in session! Second Life University returns with a special new episode featuring Boston Blaisdale! We are excited to welcome him back to the series as we give it a fresh restart.

In this new video, Boston walks you through the Avatar Welcome Pack, showing you how to build a fully customized, high-quality avatar at no cost, then introduces Project Zero, a new streaming viewer that lets you log in from your web browser with no download required.

Several topics around the Welcome Pack are discussed by narrator Boston Blaisdale, such as where to find it and mixing & matching items. Several topics around Project Zero are also gone over, such as managing what one is wearing.

The Lab promises more videos over the coming weeks.

Signal Linden Leaving The Lab

Linden Lab is saying goodbye to one of it's own. On Friday November 21, Signal Linden announced on his Twitter/X account he was leaving

Today is my last day at Linden Lab! It's been an awesome nearly 10 years.

In an increasingly channelized digital environment remains one of the few platforms where creativity, exhuberance and natural social connection is encouraged and supported.

In a second post:

Virtual worlds remain a places where people can carve out little niches and build out their own nest - the cozy web.

Second Life is growing, and I'm excited to see where it goes in the coming years.

Signal Linden was hired by Linden Lab in January 2016. He worked as the Engineering Director on the server and viewer. On his profile, he stated he had a personal account since 2005. He would appear at some events such as Lab Gabs and Second Life Birthday Town Halls, as well as Bid Me Bald fundraisers.

Firestorm Viewer Updates

With our focus on Veterans Day and the passing of Baron Wulfenbach/Melanippe of Themiscyra , it slipped our minds to write about Firestorm getting updated on November 11. The new version is labeled Firestorm 7.2.2.

The new version fixes some bugs, including some that could cause you to crash. There are also some changes such as offering the Avatar Starter Pack in place of the Avatar Chooser (the old avatars should still be in the library).  One can also mark items, and outfits, as favorites. There's other details such as chat moderation, additional emojis, voice fixes, and more.

The Pharmacy

There are many clubs across Second Life. But Netera Landar found one that combines the songs of today with the atmosphere of the 1920s speakeasies: The Pharmacy. She would have a few words with Pet Pinklady, the owner and manager of the venue. So what did Netera think?

EOTB: Embedded Youtube Videos Not Working

On Wednesday November 19, Linden Lab addressed a certain issue it the official Second Life blog:Youtube videos embedded inworld had stopped working.

Many of you have recently noticed that YouTube videos embedded directly in Second Life no longer play. Here’s what’s going on, why it’s happening, and how you can keep sharing video experiences in-world.
First, let’s clear the air: this change is not caused by Second Life.

YouTube has begun more strictly enforcing the policy around video playback inside embedded browsers. These policy and technical restrictions affect any platform trying to use embeds stripped from the iframe, not just Second Life. As a result, YouTube.com embeds often refuse to load or play inside parcel media and shared media surfaces.

Our underlying media system has not changed. What has changed is how YouTube allows its content to be displayed.

The embeds are breaking because Youtube has tightened various restrictions, so that the inworld media panels' inworld browser can no longer meet their requirements. So the videos are blocked.

What to do? Linden Lab stated they are "exploring ways to improve overall media playback resiliency." But for now, they suggest either using Vimeo platform videos, as it is "currently the most seamless drop-in replacement for in-world video playback," or using a self-hosted webpage with an iFrame, "Many residents already use this approach for theaters, classrooms, and event venues."

Eighteen Years of Writing About Second Life

It was eighteen years ago this month in which my time in SL as I know it began.

While I had first logged in on December the previous year, for months my time here was on and off as my one friend here at the time was busy, and I didn't know where to go. The "Destination Guide" we know today did not exist then. So I just randomly TPed to a few locations. Then I heard about the Relay for Life Weekend Track. While the event was over, the exhibits got my attention. So I began to log on more often, eventually coming across my first hangouts, Luskwood, then the STA, and began making a few friends. Also at Luskwood I would get a red fox avatar and finally upgrade from the starter avatar.

Wanting to know more about this wacky and wonderful virtual world, searching around on the Internet I came across blogs and newsletters. One was the "Second Life Newspaper" run by JamesT Juno the owner and Dana Vanmoer the editor. Once in a while, they would ask for reader submissions. Eventually, I emailed them a story, then a picture, then another picture. They then asked me to show up at their office for a job interview.

And I got the job, the "fox reporter" among this team of newswriters.

It took a little time for me to "get in the groove," but I was soon able to easily come out with one, sometimes two stories a week, along with at least one screenshot cartoon picture. I would document events, review places, and interview people of all kinds. After about to and a half years, things took a sad turn when James left SL, then Dana announced she would have to close down the paper due to real life. Saddened, but determined to keep on writing about the news, I would get together with Gemma Cleanslate, Shelie Sands, and Grey Lupindo and form the Second Life Newser. "One man's dream" had become a shared dream, and I along with my teammates would continue it.

Year after year, I've continued to write about the people and places of this fantastic, sometimes weird, virtual world as Second Life's fox reporter. While I've come across some chicanery and selfishness, there's been no shortage of people wanting to build great things for others to see or do great things for others. The Relay for Life is certainly an example of this, with unforgettable well-designed sims in the Fantasy Faire, and great camps and hundreds getting together in comradery on the Relay Weekend. To me it is this, and not a few point to old scandalous stories a few people for some reason still point to, that is the real face of Second Life.

By all means not everyone's been happy. There have been a very few over the past 18 years who expressed dissatisfaction, notably the partner of one person who was caught robbing a charity.. But for the most part, I've received praise and applause. And to you I thank you. You have been the big reason I've kept going for all these years.

Unfortunately, I have had to slow down from the amount I was doing a few years ago. After my real-life job at a depot ended several years ago, I had more time to write. While I took the time to finally make progress on and complete the novel I published several months ago, I also had time for a few more stories. Finding full-time work again got delayed for several reasons, including the Pandemic. But eventually I did. But unfortunately that means not quite the time for writing I once did. There's also that when I came to SL, I was a relatively young man. Today, I'm not that far from real-life retirement. So that may be slowing me down a little as well. While I am spending a little time on more novels to publish, most of my writing time still goes to Newser articles and briefs.

That doesn't mean I like writing about here less, I'm always finding something. It's just that Real Life has a way of tapping me on the shoulder, a lot. Some mornings all I can do is put up the "Later today" sign, and finish whatever I'm working on in the late morning or early afternoon.

The paper will keep getting updated every day. That will not change. But it's looking like there won't be quite as many longer articles from me.

In any event, it's been quite "a long strange trip" writing about this wacky and wonderful virtual world, and looking forward to writing more in the years to come.

Remembering Baron Wulfenback

On Sunday November 16 at 2PM SL time, residents gathered at the R.F. Burton Library for a memorial service to Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, or the other personalities of the person behind the avatar Tanarian, Corgi, or Melanippe of Themiscyra. At least a few dozen were in the building, including a few people whom it is guessed have not been online for some time, taking a break from their hiatus to honor the departed.

One at a time, various people would go over an old memory, whether it was a first impression, a memorable event, or something else. A couple people would recite poems.

"... he gave me a personal tour of the Cavorite mines, during which he warned me about the unstable, dangerous floor, just before he accidentally fell through and got trapped himself!  He was also my very first dance partner at my first, formal Caledon Ball.  I will always miss his grace and presence.  He made a newbie feel welcomed and brought me into the Steam community."

"Herr Baron vaz der great guy, hyu knowz?  He encouraged me, alvays, to do crezy schtuff."

"I remember the Baron well, from the time he was Consulate for Antiquity. He was always polite and friendly to everyone.  Personally, I always felt he kept many Estates linked together, so many people attended each other’s events. He is one more person who is sadly departed from us all."

"...we had many adventures together. But the greatest was when she returned the favor and dragged me into the Steamlands, with Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, played to the hilt from the Girl Genius online comic. And all our friends spun new characters and stories from that universe. My thanks to the rest of you for recounting the memories."

"I will only say this: it is because of Ms. Tanarian that I am here today. She taunted me with promises of many hijinx if I joined SL. And so there has been."

After the remembrance, some went to where the Baron's casket was on display at the Capitol Building in Texas Antiquity. Antiquity's Prince Jacon Desanto Cortes de Bezar (Jacon Cortes) would thank the Honor Guard which had been standing watch, and give a statement in the departed's honor, "It is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to Herr Baron ... I had no idea he as also in Roma. I dealt with him there as Mel, and had no idea. Herr Baron was well known as you can tell by the many that have attended services for him. The services were fuill for a reason. He touched many people. Now we bid good bye to our friend, in whichever form you knew him...."

A larger article will be done, eventually, with all tributes given. For now, the Aether Salon has a transcript of the talk in the library available (here).

"A Winter Wonderland Christmas" And "Kenzie’s"

Gemma Cleanslate has been continuing her search for Christmas-themed locations.  Today's article features two places she found some Christmas decor. Kenzie’s had decorations, but also some items to get as presents such as clothing, and there was also some picturesque scenery.

Tiny Empires Down?

Things have been a little frustrating for the fans of Tiny Empires in the Sunweavers, the community in which the Newser has it's office. For those who don't know, "Tiny Empires" is a HUD=based game in which players slowly gain land, gold, and rank over time. Although the game has been around for many years, it still has a following.

Unfortunately, something is wrong with the game. Sunweaver leader Rita Mariner informed the Newser the HUDs haven't been working for a few days.Taking a look myself, they were stuck in "connecting," with no information about acres or gold or liege sworn to.

This sounds similar to another failure in 2012, which was eventually resolved

As of the writing of this article, Tiny Empire creator, and Emperor, Ultralite Soliel, has not been online for several days and is unavailable for comment.

The Tiny Empires game, and Tiny Empires 3000, are available at: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Kitster/147/41/54

*Addition* On Monday afternoon, the servers finally came online and the game was on.

SL Video: "I Wanna Be Your Dream"

From I Am Ava on May 2025, "Step into a digital dream soaked in shadow and smoke. This Second Life music video opens with a moody black-and-white film noir scene—complete with a smoky detective’s office, a mysterious dame, and dialogue pulled straight from a 1940s crime drama. But the case? It’s not about missing jewels or a stolen falcon… it’s about a stolen heart. When the music starts, the story shifts—blurring the line between avatar and emotion. This original song was written by Ana DuBois"

Veterans Day Fundraiser Concert Nets Over 140,000 Lindens

On Tuesday November 11, Veterans Day, there was a benefit concert at the Voodoo Bayou Blues & Motown club. The event was to raise money for Homes For Our Troops and lasted from 2 to 12 PM SL time.

The fundraiser was organized in part by Frets Nirvana, who helped start things off, "Okies ...let's get this right kiosk going !!  I am going to kick it off... HFOTS Mission is to build and donate specially adapted custom homes for severely injured Veterans post-9/11 enabling them to rebuild their lives." DJ Marty, who was the first musician, added, "Since inception as of 1/4/25 HFOT has built 423 homes and donated them and currently have approx. 65 projects in the pipeline." DJ Fae, who was next, remarked, "And hey you guys toss a few more linden in the pot and maybe we can squeeze a few more projects into the pipeline."

Frets would occasionally match donation to keep them rolling along. Fae would also speak more, "Did you guys know that HFOT builds these homes in any state in the country where the Veterans choose to rebuild their lives.  They have currently built in 46 states.  Veterans will typically choose to settle near family and friends, close to medical services and warmer climates.  Prosthetics can easily freeze and the cold weather itself can reap havoc on them. ... So not only is HFOT building houses for our vets, they're also assigning Support Specialists for our vets too!  Just to make sure they're doing okay with the transition back to Civi life and getting all of the help that they need and supplemental services they need! How freaking awesome is that?"

By the end of the event, a total of 142,850 Linden dollars had been raised.

Veterans Isle will be the location of the next major HFOT fundraiser, in early December.

Emerald Christal Golf Course Okay, For Now

Last month, we reported that the Emerald City Golf Course was in danger of shutting down due to lack of funds. Several days ago, caretaker Laz Dresler announced that the course had raised enough to keep going for another month.

Thank you all you amazing individuals that love golf here and continue to donate to the  games at ECGC.

We made our Tiers Goal for Our November Tiers., But please don't forget...  Tiers NEVER END! SO FORE!!

So the golf course is up for another month. But as Laz mentioned, they still need cash for December.

Early Christmas Shopping at Dench Designs
