Burn2 Continues

 

Burn2, the biggest and longest running annual art and music festival in Second Life, is taking place. This Saturday and Sunday are the high points, the Burning of the Man and the Temple Burn. But there's much more to the Burn than that. Gemma Cleanslate has been going around the various exhibits and events. And there was plenty to see.

Winter Burn Starts Today

 

Today is the start of the Winter Burn event in Second Life, with three days of art and music in the Burning Man- Deep Hole sim. The theme is "Bubble Gum and Duct Tape."

Yesterday was the "Burn2 Unplugged" event, with some hours of music.

Winter Burn 2021: Bubble Gum and Duct Tape

With Winter Burn, we welcome 2021 buoyed by a measure of hope and optimism, perhaps with a touch of caution. ​The Ten Principles​ serve as our framework for how we want to live and do things together. We chose a theme: ​Bubble Gum and Duct Tape​.

When you ponder this theme, think about what makes things stick together, if it helps. Love, support, respect, chain, a guy rope, tie,wire, clasp, screws, nails, bandage, cord, harness ... and of course, Bubble Gum and Duct Tape. Basically, think outside of the box, beyond bubble gum & duct tape.

Life has begun to stir on the virtual playa. Trucks are hauling in the prims needed for infrastructure and various builds. Interesting creations are sprouting up out of the frosty dust. Performers are booking their slots for the stages. Preparations are well underway!

The event opens on the 29th of January at 5:00 PM SLT, when the Lamplighters will arrive with their usual fiery enthusiasm for a walk-on. Everyone is welcome to walk along on a tour of the art installations and camps until finally arriving at the Main Stage. Lamplighters love to let loose a little fire to properly start things off, and start they do with music and much dancing!

Press Release: Burn 2 Oct 19-28

As we do every year, we invited artists and creatives to get their plots to create homes and art installations in this virtual temporary city on five sims, with a challenge to build to a science fiction flavoured theme, “I, Robot,” within the framework of the Ten Principles of Burning Man and a set of build guidelines.

The response from the community has been marvelously varied. Some are built around the Three Laws of Robotics as set out by Isaac Asimov. Others explore ideas about the relationship between humans and AI, or express very real fears and doubts about the future. There are still others that are simply funny and fun to explore. And not the least among these are the simple camps for those who want to merely sit a spell, relax  and soak in the tunes in the air.

This year, we invite you to experience art that examines how it feels to live in a world filled with robots. When you step foot onto the dusty playa, you are no longer a mere bystander but a part of the spectacle that is I, Robot.

What does this two-part statement mean? The first we all know, H2O represents WATER. But...the second part is not a chemical formula; rather it is an attempt to describe the process of combustion that results in FIRE. Both utilise hydrogen and oxygen, but manifest in different ways. Thus we express the concept of Equinox and the dichotomy of fire and water.

The event opens with a walk-on by the Lamplighters at 10:00am SLT on Saturday, with Burners and observers welcome to join us on our little walkabout to the stage and kick off the event .

The Nebula, the Burnal Equinox effigy, stands near the center of the playa. It is different to anything we’ve Burned before, and the planned spectacle is one you definitely want to witness! Come this weekend, for fun, art and music galore.

Burn2: Getting The Burning Man Alight

The Burn2 art and music festival reached it's high point over the weekend with the Temple Burn, and the signature event, the burning of "The Man." Klaus Bereznyak was there, and watched the rangers, lamplighters set things up for the burn as the onlookers gathered.

Burn2 in Second Life

The Burn2 festival is over. But there are still stories to tell. Today we have one from Grease Coakes. Grease didn't just observe the event, but took part as a DJ, and was asked to help out with one of the ceremonies. And he was on hand to see one of the final events: the "Burning of The Man."

Press Day At Burn2

Today at 10AM SL time, Burn2, the largest yearly art and music festival begins. Yesterday at Press Day, Gemma Cleanslate had an early peek at the grounds, seeing a number of sights and exhibits. She also had a few words with some of the Burners, including a few personalities familiar with longtime readers of the Newser.

Burn2, "Carnival of Mirrors" Opens Saturday

One of the biggest yearly events in Second Life, the Burn2 festival, is about to begin. After weeks of preparation, the final touches to the exhibits and the final adjustments to the schedules are being done as the event is set to begin this weekend on Saturday October 17 at 12 Noon SL time. This year's theme is "Carnival of Mirrors."

Builders are feverishly finishing their fantastical building, Greeters honing their gorgeous greeting skills, Rangers shaking the dust out of their hats and boots, and Lamplighters donning their robes, all in preparation for the Big Burn event we lovingly nickname, "Octoburn."

BURN2 2015: Carnival of Mirrors will open on Saturday the 17th of October at noon SLT with a procession by the Lamplighters, beginning at their Village which is not far from the Welcome Gate where you arrive. You are all invited to explore, experience and express the joy of the Burn and revel in the music, art and colourful constructions born out of the imaginations of creative Burners. And, of course there will be fire!

The event opens with a Lamplighters procession at 12:00pm SLT on the 17th, with another at 7:00pm SLT. Additional processions will take place at noon and 7pm SLT daily through the 23rd. On the 24th there will be no processions, but the Man Burns will be at 6am, 12pm and 6pm SLT on the 24th. On the last day the Lamplighters will perform their last processions at 5am, 11am and 5pm SLT - one hour before each Temple Burn. Also on Temple Burn day, Lamplighter processions will pause along their route at Center Camp for a short Fire Dance performance before continuing the procession toward the Temple.

The event will be taking place on six sims this year: Burning Man Deep Hole,  Burning Man Jade, Burning Man Looking Glass, Burning Man Black Rock, Burning Man Limbo, and Burning Man Frog Pond.

Press Release: Hotter Than Air Burnal Equinox, March 28th - 30th, 2014

Hotter Than Air  ---   Burnal Equinox at BURN2 Playa  OPENS MARCH 28TH 12PM SLT

Join us from March 28th-30th in Second Life for a totally different playa experience!

At a time far into our future, the earth has been devastated by a multitude of scourges: harsh climate change, pollution, famine, and war. The playa is one of the last inhabitable places on earth, but toxic fumes cover the ground and rise to 100 meters. The only safe living environment is above the toxic gas at ground levels as the playa’s winds help purify the air at this altitude. Passing through this toxic ground zone is possible, but long term exposure can be fatal.

One redeeming factor of the toxin is that when it is captured, placed into a balloon and mixed with the correct proportion of playa dust, it takes on the form of a very powerful, lighter-than-air gas.  A single five-meter balloon can lift thousands of pounds into the air.  The gaseous concoction has been fondly named Fairy Dust.

Modern manufacturing no longer exists. Everyday items are scavenged from the remains of abandoned buildings.  Humans have learned to survive by creating with their own hands. They build platforms supported by balloons filled with Fairy Dust. These floating platforms are the hosts for a new civilization above the ground.  The citizens of this floating city commute by building lighter than air vehicles. They are powered by whatever means can be found and lifted into the air by balloons filled with the Fairy Dust

Every Spring the residents of this community celebrate a renewal of life. Balloons have been the savior of this city. Residents design and decorate their lifting balloons as part of the Equinox celebration. This tradition has been carried down from their ancestors from when the earth was plentiful. They celebrate this event in hopes that the earth will renew itself. They celebrate the clean air that still exists high in the clouds. They celebrate their existence on earth, as different as it might be from their ancestors. They are ALIVE!

Become a citizen of this Playa City in the Sky and celebrate Burnal Equinox by creating a build on one of our 32x32x40 floating platforms!

Please read the Builders Guidelines and then submit an application that will be entered into the lottery for selection for the event. The deadline for the build application is Feb 17, 2014. All builders will be chosen by a lottery system.  Good luck and have fun!

Press Release: Burn2 "Color Outside Of The Lines"

Color Outside Of The Lines brings a May explosion of creation and celebration of mother to the Virtual Playa!

In remembrance of the time of our early beginnings; Paper - empty as our abilities, was given to us along with crayons. So we created art. As paint boxes and coloring books appeared we still created art, now of structure and less of our first faltering attempts. As we grew in our art, “She” (our mother figure) was always at our side guiding us, praising us; swift with tape and magnets to post our results upon the fridge.

She was always there to encourage us and to push us further to use chalk, clay, and anything that came to hand. She was our muse and sponsor, and always gave us permission to COLOR OUTSIDE OF THE LINES.


BURN2 – Deep Hole, Join us May 24th and 25th for a two day event with music and collaborative creative art building. Celebrate the act of art creation and the role of Her(our mother figure).

The Burnal Equinox Opens

The Burnal Equinox opened at 12 noon SL time with a gathering of burners and visitors at the entrance to parade to the center camp. 

The lamplighters led us from the entrance all around the sim lighting as they went, and drumming and dancing all the way. All the crowd followed right along dancing and enjoying it all the way to the center camp roof where the parties will be held until Sunday night! 

There are some amazing creative  builds here on the playa . Take a walk around to see them all. There will be parties with great DJs most of the time so don’t miss them. 

When you enter you will find some freebie folders near the gate . Be sure to stop and pick them up . There is fire in them.... wear it!. There is also a sinking ship that you will see in your travels that also has freebies in it. That ship will burn!

Press Release: Burnal Equinox at the Virtual Playa

On Burnal Equinox, the mid-time of our burning year, we propose a celebration of the transition of seasons. Come home to the playa. Choose the season and the reason, as we are in a time of shifting and of metamorphosis.

BURN2 opens this annual event at noon SLT on Friday, March 22, with the Lamplighters procession leading the BurningMan 2.0 community around the Playa and on to Center Camp. Three days of celebration will culminate in a special BURN of a PIRATE SHIP! We’ve also got a great lineup of DJs to get your feet on FIYAH!

Burning of the Man and Temple Burn Tonight, Tomorrow

This weekend marks the climax of the Burn2 festival, with the burning of "The Man" today, and the Temple Burn tomorrow on Sunday.

The times "The Man" will burn today are 4AM SL time (Australia/Asia), 12 Noon (Europe), and 8PM (Americas)

Burn2 Rite of Passage

Burning Equinox begins this coming Friday at 10:30 AM SL time. Workers are preparing the playa for lots of fun. Kev Sweetwater has the Department of Public Works busy constructing roads, public buildings, The Man, a Temple and more. There is a group creating new porta-potties with all kinds of décor.


There will be activities going on all day Saturday and Sunday. Doctor Gascoigne has stage managers ready to assist the performers at the stages. I found the Myst Dancers on stage preparing for their show. They will enthrall you with their moves. Many well known DJs have signed up for the parties which look like they are going al day and all night. Ladyslipper Constantine and Exorcist Uriza are busy with the Rangers who will be assisting anyone on the playa. This midyear time on the playa is always a great time that you all will enjoy so remember the dates March 25 through March 27.

One thing I am sad to hear is the Yokohama Marching Band will not be able to perform due to the horrific situation in Japan. I know there will be some fun races going on with awesome art cars. The Lamplighters will be processing daily which is always a wonderful sight. Plan some time to spend on the playa.
