Music Mix: "SL Newser Party 2022 At the Happy Vixen"

Earlier this month was the Newser anniversary and it's party. Grease Coakes would remind me of when he DJed for the Newser parties (a favorite DJ of Gemma). So here's his soundtrack of when he did the tunes one year.

Kara Foxdale, SL Tarot Reader, Has Died

The Newser recently learned that SL resident, Kara Foxdale, has passed away. Grease Coakes delivered the news in a Discord chatroom, "Sadly I just learned that the real life Kara behind the SL account Kara Foxdale passed away recently." He described her as being of poor health.

When he was writing for the Newser, Grease would write about Kara several years ago, as a club owner, as well as a tarot card reader. He would join the club as a DJ, and help her with the readings.

Former Newser Reporter Grease Coakes Annouces He's Leaving Second Life

For most residents who leave Second Life, their departure is a quiet affair, most not noticing until they've been gone for a while. But for Grease Coakes, he made his public, announcing it in DJ Tantari's Discord.

It's very unlikely I will come back to Second Life anymore. Crashing constantly is not fun. I could not stay online for my DJ set at 21SLB so I am tired of fighting a game that no longer lets me log on anymore.

So I uninstalled it and I am not coming back.

Talking to Grease, he was saying he had been having trouble for a while, "Trust me I have been struggling to stay on SL since May. And I am done fighting with it."  When asked if he would give another virtual world a try, he had no comment.

Grease Coakes joined the Newser in 2012, writing articles to 2017. When not on SL, he would play Guild Wars 2. Besides writing for the Newser, he would publish some furry fiction, DJ at sets, such as a few SL Newser anniversary parties, and lead a tarrot card class.

SL Video: "Always Look On The Second Side Of Life"

From Maus Merryjest on June 30, "The ending of my SL20B set. It was a wild time! Five days before my set, I decided I wanted to add an extra song to celebrate SL20, and do an affectionate parody of common topics. I created can-can clicky-heels for people to wear and dance with, and roped some poor unsuspecting innocents into my plot. I wrote the lyrics, and that's when I knew I had gone past the point of no return. Special thanks to my dancers Nix Starchild, Inferna and Greasy Cokes for making this a special moment- and to @secondlife for having me there in the first place. Here's to 20 more years of your awesome, guys!"

Weekend At A Glance

While there were a number of events this weekend, a few stood out. One was the "Waterworld" event at the Burn ONe area in Highup. A tribute to the 1995 movie with Kevin Costner, the main feature was a build based on the floating town in the film, From Friday at 1 to Midnight on Sunday, there were musical performances, such as DJ Grease, and each night showings of the movie.

Also taking place was the NatureCon. It actually started on Thursday, but continued over the weekend and is still going on.

Also going on were tributes to the late Ktahdn Vesuvino, who passed away last week. If you missed any, there is still at least one that has yet to take place.

Partying At The Second Life Birthday

 *

There's plenty do see and do at the Second Life Birthday. There's a number of DJs performing at the stages, and I dropped by a few. On Monday June 20 at 9AM SL time, Grease Coakes was playing some music.

Grease's performance was at the The Vernian Rotunda.

On Tuesday June 21, DJ Tantari did her tunage at the Arboretum at 5PM, dancing on top of the sturdy metal DJ booth.

"This is GAME ON! The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world. So wake up, Mr. Freeman. Wake up and smell the ashes. -- G-Man (Half Life 2)"

"I have never felt so high, and maybe it's all a lie... but I am never gonna die, 'cause music makes me feel alive!"

DJ Tantari will perform again at the SLB on Saturday June 25 at 9AM SL time.

At The Steamworks at 10PM SL time, DJ Moff (MoffettMephit Resident) was spinning the tunage.

DJs At The SLB

There's a lot going on at the SL18B. There's the "Meet the Lindens" events. There are the numerous exhibits. And there's the music. On Monday, I stopped by two DJs playing music at the DJ stage. One was Grease Coakes.

DJ Grease played to a crowd at the DJ stage at 4AM SL time, a mix of humans, furs, a gryphon, and one glowing shape. He would later post his set on Mixcloud, "played for the amazing people who make up Second Life. Trance and video game remixes are meshed in tightly for an amazing two hour dj set. The theme of "Other Worlds" for SLB this year fits in nicely with this trance set. The picture is based upon Dragon Warrior Monsters 1. Thus the last song is a piano remix of the town theme from Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 DWM 1 and 2 is all about traveling to other worlds as you jump into an epic adventure!"

A few hours later at 10 AM was DJ Moff (MoffettMephit Resident) of Montecito Bay. He and Emmy (Emorald Resident) greeted me.

There was quite a crowd there, including the Relay's black unicorn Avariel Falcon and Squeaky Mole.

Moff compared his set to a spaceship run, "Welcome board Crux Space Flight 168 to Tech Noir! We've begun boarding for all classes, so please, step inside, buckle up....and leave the rest of this trip up to your Captain, Super Rockin' Magic Moff! We expect a VERY smooth, uneventful flight.....(famous last words....)"

"OMG Finally! we're approaching the Pacific Coast! ... It's been a long drive, but we're almost there. I hope we don't run into anything WEIRD though. ... I told ya I'll get ya to the SpacePort! OMG the Mole fell off! *throws a teleporter* We can't wait! The ship will depart soon! ... Alright, let's see if 88mph will do the trick! HANG ON! ... OMG I think it worked! I can see the space port!"

Before long, someone in an ostrich avatar came out. And then was going around riding a banana. As Moff put it, "Now THAT is properly weird!"

Eventually, the set would end, Moff saying, "This was fantastic! Thank you SLB18 crew for having me." Over the stream, he would say "Thank you all for having me! Happy Birthday Second Life!"

The Second Life Newser Party

Scenes From The SL16B

Late Saturday night, or was it early Sunday morning, DJ Grease was playing to the crowd at the Spin Masters stage at SL16B Beguile (123/5/30). There's been a lot of music, but according to the calendar of events, Sunday will be the last full day for music events. After today, the next events on the schedule are two on Friday, notably a five hour "thank you" party.

But the exhibits should still be up until July 8. And there are plenty to see such as the "Fantasy Faire Litfest/50's Mashup - A Troll in Narnia." This exhibit is a tribute to fantasy stories written and published in the 1950s, such as "The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe," which was published in October 1950. It would be followed by six more books, making up "The Chronicles of Narnia."

The Fairelands are vast, with so much to see! Venture forth with confidence along with the Faire Folk, as they ride out from the LitFest home base daily, exploring a new region each day. Don’t forget to add pencils and paper to your travel bag, as you may feel the urge to write a story for our Tours and Regions Writing Challenge.

A detailed Literary Festival Calendar of Events at the Fantasy Faire website will help you plan your visits and choose your activities. And you can keep the spirit of the Faire alive, even when you have returned home. Fantasy Faire Radio provides you with music, news and other Fantasy Faire information, wherever you are.

Tarot Reading by Grease Coakes

Most everyone wants to know what the future holds in store for them. For Deaflegacy, she pondered over a couple issues. Someone whom offered a few predictions was friend of the Newser Grease Coakes, whom has been doing some tarot card readings. She decided to see what the cards had in store for her.

Grease Coakes' Tarot Card Readings

"What does fortune hold for me?" An old question people have asked fortune tellers for ages. One method of this is through tarot cards. Grease Coakes has recently taken up this old art that Second Life has given a modern twist, tarot card readings given through the virtual world. So how does he does it? Grease offered me a free reading to show me.

Team Sunbeamer "Bid Me" Results

For close to a month, Team Sunbeamers has had a number of "Bid Me" events going. Numbering ten at first, including one that was actually an auction, the number of the fundraisers was soon raised to thirteen. Finally on Friday, April 21, at 8PM, the kiosks for the events were frozen, and the amounts calculated. Team captain made an announcement of the results the following day, in the cases of events involving more than one kiosk only the amount of the winning one announced.

1. BIXYL 1100L goes Tiny Fox
2. VIDEO - 7600L Winner DUSK
3. GREASE - 700L - Goes Original AV
4. SHOCK - 1270L - Stays Wolf
5. GIL - 1250L - Goes JAILBAIT
6. PERRI - 1100L - Chocolate bunny
7. SNOWY - 5800L - Rita
8. BRANDI - 1000L - Little Mouse
9. RITA - 1200L Goes Rat
10. Christine: 1000L - Rita
11. Vicki - 1000L - Rita
12. Kacey - 1000L - Rita
13. Clover - 1000L - Rita

Of the video auction, Dusk Griswold gets to chose the theme of Nydia Tungsten's next video, as well as the dancers or actors. Some, including Rita and myself, are stuck in new avatars for a week. Though as yours truly does some work on journalism, on some occasions such as when doing interviews I'll be temporarily back in my usual avatar.

The Sunbeamer team has been described as "creeping towards Silver." In the past three weeks, the team has raised about twenty thousand Linden dollars, the team total as of when this article was written adding up to 122,700 Lindens (Totals page). .This upcoming weekend, Club Cutlass and the Happy Vixen, two clubs of the Sunweaver and Angel communities, of which most of the members of Team Sunbeamers make their home, will be a part of the Club Crawl. Future planned events include an air show, a road rally, a tribute party for the late Artistic Fimicloud, and others.

One More Week For RFL Team Sunbeamer "Bid-Me" Events.

About a couple weeks ago, we reported on ten "Bid Me" events the Relay's Team Sunbeamer is holding. They are Team captain Rita Mariner's offer for others to bid her into her newbie avatar, Brandi Streusel offering others to bid her a mouse cub, Skylark Lefavre offering herself up for a date, Perri Prinz offering to go blue vixen or chocolate bunny, Perri's Xanadu support squad also offering themselves up for date auctions, Nydia Tungsten offering to do a video for the highest bidder, and then there's me taking part in a "Bid Me Tiny" in which I get shrunk down to size for a week for the first 5,000 Lindens, and an additional day for each 2,000 Lindens.

Since then, there have been three additional "Bid Me" events added. Shockwave Yareach is doing a "Bid Me Crabby." For every 3,000 Lindens raised in the "crabby" kiosk, if it beats the "stay" kiosk, the wolf will be spending a week having a "shell" of a time. Gil Otaared, Rita's partner and the owner of a Civil War ironclad in the Sunweaver Estates, is offering to stay a pony avatar for the same 3,000 Lindens a week raised (Rita calls it a "jailbait" avatar as this particular pony character is very young). And Newser writer Grease Coakes is offering to put aside his fox avatar in favor of a ringtail for one week for every 5,000 Lindens raised.

Rita told the Newser the kiosks will be up for one more week. At 8PM Wednesday April 19, the totals will be final, and the results announced.

If you want to help with the bidding head over to Club Cutlass at Sunweaver Bay (114/117/757).

Furry Discrimination

Second Life allows one to appear more or less what they want to look like, either able to make the avatar ourselves or more commonly purchasing it from a builder. One would think as long as one kept their privates under clothing, all would be well. But that's not necessarily the case. There are a few roleplay sims that insist on visitors resembling the people of the period, which don't get many complaints from nonhumans as humans get the boot too if they don't change outfits. But what really gets people irritated are the handful of places that kick out furries and other nonhuman avatars for no good reason. Grease Coakes had the misfortune to run into one recently.
