Gathering of Lindens and Moles at The SL22B Welcome Area

Yesterday on Tuesday July 8, I ported to the SLB Welcome Area in SLB Awesome to write about a game. And what I saw was a surprise. Several Moles, and a Linden were there.

They were Abnor, Mini, Star, Violet, Bri, and Cara Mole, and Madori Linden. Madori stood out in her tainbow outfit. They were there in case people needed help with the Swaginator or Dragon Egg Hunt, though Abnor mused, "I've ask you all here today because every one of you had opportunity to kill Col Mustard in the Library with the Candlestick. but Col Mustard can only have one killer..." One resident responded by musing back, "I only have around 140 candlesticks in my inventory. I would not waste one on murder."

There were various comments about the exhibits, notably about one involving "The Cryptex," and about where to get stamps and have a stamp giver. There were also thanks to the Moles for what they do.

Eventually, the Moles had to depart, and the residents went about their ways.

More on the SLB later.

Update on Mieville

On Monday night, February 6, there was an announcement in the Mieville community group about the future of their sims. The statement came from Annakari Dragonsworn (Annakari Genesis).

We now know that the regions must be transferred to new owners. Linden Labs has provided us a number of benefits to enable us to save our Mieville community regions.

IN addition to that there are a number of things that everyone must understand. The benefits afforded to us for the Mieville Regions are FOR the Mieville regions. Please do not ask to purchase regions and move them elsewhere, this request will be denied. Linden Lab's generosity is intended to preserve the regions as part of the Mieville community.

Regions that are still in need of sponsors and or purchase:

Mieville Docks
Mieville Lakes
Mieville Poe
Mieville Chesterton
Mieville Dickens
and
Mieville Kipling

Mieville regions in need of sponsors, on the condition that they continue as is with no changes:

Mieville Mt. Rose

Possibly Mieville Twain (this one may be covered, but we might need a backup plan).

We will be rolling out sponsor packages to help save and keep Mieville Shelley.

Regions not listed here are already spoken for, or have transfer plans.

YOU MUST SEND ME A NOTECARD if you want to be included as a potential owner or a sponsor of a region.

(use properties and click on my name and send me an IM that includes the Notecard with your information and your request).

Other important information:

From Madori Linden:

We will be able to have regions moved free to keep the remaining regions together after all the transfers are complete (we will do the process of allowing neighbors). Downgrading to a homestead will be free of charge. There will NOT be any transfer fees.

Talking to Annakari, she told me things are okay for the moment, and scheduled events are on course to go on, but, "Regions without potential owners could disappear as early as later this month." The most vulnerable were "the homesteads of the Mieville Docks, and Mieville Lakes, the full regions of Mieville Poe and Mieville Chesterton. ... We are hoping to have some regions protected by the SL Historical Preservation team, but we are still waiting on that information. Three of us will pick up regions, on the bases that we can get sponsors to help support them, those three regions will disappear too if we are unable to fund them."

Annakari went on to say, "We will be approving or denying region owners, because these are to be purchased with the intent to remain a part of the Mieville community, with similar themes to the other regions... not for greedy landlords to snatch up and take somewhere. If the regions are not part of Mieville, the deal with Madori will not apply either."

So if you're looking to help out a long-lasting Steampunk-themed community, now's your chance. Once again, inquiries need to be sent to Annakari Dragonsworn (Annakari Genesis).

Linden Lab at the VWBPE Conference

At the Virtual Worlds Best Practices for Education conference last week, there were three discussions in which there was at least one member of Linden Lab taking part, one per day of the three day event. At the first one on Thursday, Patch Linden was the sole person from the Lab. Of the three people leading the investment group that bought Linden Lab last year, Randy Waterfield, Brad Oberwager, and Raj Date, Patch stated he mostly worked with Oberwager and was optimistic about his intentions for the virtual world. "He has one mission: to be the best and biggest virtual world there can be. He wants to grow and invest in Second Life. He genuinely loves the product." All three were very interested in making Tilia, the virtual currency exchange service under Linden Lab, "grow and prosper," but as it had a "symbiotic relationship" with Second Life, the virtual world would grow as well. Patch stated Oberwager had the goal of increasing Second Life's userbase, "we want to double the resident population over the next 3-5 years." The team itself wanted to finish work on Amazon Web Services, and there were plans to work on the "onboarding experience for newcomers, "We've learned through the Pandemic. We've listened to users. It's given us stuff to latch on to, to make improvements that will help everyone."

At the Roundtable discussion on Friday, Patch, Brett (Marketing), Grumpity (VP of Product), Madori (Land Operations) were before an audience of residents. Grumpity expressed excitement about the Cloud Server project, "that will allow us to use cloud technology in ways to improve user experience." Brett talked about the Adult Swim event and the NFL Alumni Experience (that took place around the Superbowl). When asked about the possibility of the return of the Teen Grid, which was taken offline on Jan 01 2011, Grumpity stated they had "frequently talked about Teen Grid internally." When asked about the Zoom video communication service, Grumpity stated, "Being in Second Life creates a sense of presence that's not present on Zoom, and also they don't have to turn their camera on here, like in Zoom." When asked about the upcoming Android client, Grumpity answered, "We hear you, we're working on figuring out a solution to that. We're excited about possibilities that will allow us to bring SL to mobile devices."

On Saturday, Grumpity and Brett Lindens were the ones appearing before the audience. Among the subjects discussed were trouble with griefers. They also discussed accessibility for residents whom English was a second language. They also talked about the Community Gateway Program, Grumpity commenting, "Nothing beats someone showing you the ropes." Grumpity stated there were new starter avatars in development by Linden Lab. Of when the Education discount was discontinued in 2010 and not brought back for three years, Grumpity would call it, "dark times ... I won't blame anyone, but it was wrong."

The Linden events and others can be seen in the VWBPE Youtube channel.

Reader Submitted: "Diggy and Madori Linden"

From Lady Digs Jewel (1x1x141 Digfoot): "I've had more positive than negative in dealing with LL. Riding sims are tricky to manage. But I did have a Linden from live chat ride on the back of my motorcycle for 2 hours for the ride up one sim and down the other with 20 members of the MC in tow. .. all the while me MC pres was skeptical about her ability and want to do anything ... and LL switched the sims to the Le Tigre server thanks to me being stubborn and working with Madori. .... I had her ride with me and she saw what was going on the sims. Without her concentrating on the navigation, she was able to concentrate on what the numbers were doing on the sim."

Lindens at the Cake Stage

There's been a lot going on at the SL13B, and a little time to write it. One event that stood out was called the "The Roleplay Mashup Meetup," which took place on Monday. But for many residents, the name was a little confusing as it was intended as a costume party and not a roleplay, and to many the costume part got lost in that it was a chance to meet up with a number of Lindens. Some were Lindens whom were familiar faces, such as Xiola and April Linden. But others were less than familiar. There were also a few other notable personalities, and no shortage of avatars.

See the pictures in Events.
