Xymbers learned last night of the two sims of the "Brony" community being taken offline after what appears like a hacking of the owners account. Details are still coming in, and the community is still just beginning to respond to the shutdown of their home.
With the Relay for Life track due to come down sooner than expected, I made the decision to postpone writing on The Walk over the weekend, and instead do something on an example of one of the rides there before it vanishes. There’s so many cool things to do, sorry to say many will get a mention only after they’re gone.
And the scenery is quite detailed. The water is just teeming with aquatic life from fish of various sizes, octopuses, jellyfish, and more. I think I saw a shark down there as well. The terrain was well done as well, forrests of kelp and other water plants, red lava flows, and more. The path of the submarine takes one into a cave and to some underwater ruins. The mermaid dance poses and rideable octopus suggests this area might be a merfolk hangout, which would add to the attraction.
During the late afternoon in the RFL Care sim, the Radicals for Life's exhibit went out with a bang, literally. HawkedWarrior Darkwatch made an announcement that the place would soon blow, and anyone who wanted a last peek had to head over, "I just like to go out with a bang so to speak. ... Please stay and watch it blow up."
And at 5:05 PM SL time, HawkedWarrior shouted, "Clear the build please! Fire in the hole!" Then there was an announcement of an armed explosive, "5, 4, 3, 2, 1, " He then stuck his fingers in his ears, and the sim announced a "BOOM." The build then began collapsing. It was soon a mess of pictures and prims.
Gentle Heron recently informed Second Life Newser about an upcoming "International Disability Rights Affirmation Conference" at the Sojourner Auditorium at Virtual Ability Island this weekend. There will be several speakers at this event, " to explore legal protections around the world for persons with disabilities."
Recently, Gemma Cleanslate had a chance to visit an interesting place, Enchantment Island. Owned by Bambitwice Nitely on the sim of the same name, the place has a wide variety of sights and things to do from thrill rides, to art museums, to puzzles to solve, to shopping. Expect to spend some time here should you visit.
The Relay for Life Walk, one of the biggest yearly events in Second Life, is finally over. Having set a new record for the season total raised at over $370,000 US dollars raised, it can only be considered a success.
Bryn Oh was here at the RFL walk with a build of her own, one based on her latest machinima, "Mayfly." To music that I found a bit haunting and sad, the camera zoomed in on the flying insects, as the lines of poetry described the lowly life of the Mayfly larvae, finally getting a chance to soar into the sky for one day, before it's end.
This is it, for those taking part in the Relay for Life Walk, this is the big day. But last night with the sims open, I had a chance to take a look at a few of the sights.
Today was the last day of the 2011 Hair Fair in Second Life. Going on for six years, the event described itself as celebrating "the best in Second Life Hairstyle design." The event had displays in tents from various companies and designers covering four sims, Platinum, Iridium, Rhodium, and Osmium.
This year, the place had a beach theme, with walkways of planks in the sand and surfboards standing next to palm trees. There were a few exhibits around, such as sand sculptures with poseballs one could sit on.
Last weekend, Grey Lupindo went to a carnival, one for a good cause. The Lindens it raised went to the Adopt-a-Family, a charity helping Second Life residents whom have fallen on hard times. There was lots to do, including a dunking booth in which Grey took a try at.
The Mystery sim, already a romantic-themed place, became more so last weekend. On Sunday July 10th, Mystery held a “Royal Wedding.” A virtual ceremony was held for sim manager Amythe Moonlight and “Evil DJ” Bloodrose Writer.
Eymerich Lane and Roselinda Mayo have an amazing sim in Second Life. It is called Roselinda's Paradise. Several times I have covered activities there, including a chess tourney, Christmas fun and also have covered their glorious art collection.
On Sunday there was a party with music and dancing in both worlds and a chance to talk back and forth to the inhabitants of both worlds. Since I have an avatar in both I was able to attend both parties at the same time. When we first arrived the chatbridge was not working. Qwark Allen played progressive psytrance the first hour in both worlds. He also had an avatar in both grids. There were six artists performing across the metaverse in six hours. This is the first time I have experienced such a party! It seems to be a wave of the future, uniting the grid worlds. Can't wait til the next one!
On Sunday, there was a party in Second Life to celebrate the independence of the world's newest nation, the African country of South Sudan. The event was in the Saffa Islands sim, organized by Tonny Storm. Music was played, in addition to a telling story shown on-screen.
This week in Second Life, we have a variety of events from live music to DJ dance parties, to readings, to game and talk shows, and more. And for those participating in the Relay for Life, This is it!! This weekend is The Walk, the highlight of the Relay for Life fundraisng season.
