2026 Relay For Life Theme And Logo Announced: "Wild For A Cure"

We're thrilled to reveal the theme logo for the 2026 Relay For Life of Second Life - Wild For A Cure

This vibrant design and theme celebrates the untamed dedication of our community and our fierce determination needed to end cancer.

“The stunning logo artwork was brought to life by the talented Sass Winchester, whose creative vision perfectly captures the raw energy and passion our Relay community brings to the fight against cancer," explains Stingray9798 Raymaker, Director of the American Cancer Society in Second Life. “The tropical elements and bold styling represent the wild enthusiasm our participants show year after year."

The "Wild For A Cure" theme encourages teams to channel their inner strength and creativity. Whether interpreting this as jungle adventures, outdoor exploration, animal representation, or simply embracing your wildest fundraising ideas, the theme offers endless creative possibilities for team builds and events.

The logo's lush greens and warm earth tones reflect growth, life, and renewal - powerful symbols in our ongoing mission to create a world without cancer. Its organic design elements remind us that healing and hope can flourish even in the most challenging environments.

Beginning now, teams can access the official 2026 theme logo at the Relay Building on the American Cancer Society Island in Second Life. Get ready to go wild for a cure!

Theme And Logo For Relay for Life 2024 Season Announced

Yesterday, Saturday September 30 in the Relay for Life in Second Life Volunteers group chat, it was announced that the theme, as well as the logo, for next year's official fundraising season had been announced. The theme: "Decades of Hope."

The Second Life ACS Information blog describes the theme as standing for "the 110 years of the American Cancer Society, as well as twenty years since volunteers began fundraising in Second Life." Of the logo, Stingray Rainmaker would say, “Dancing and music are a large part of Second Life culture, which is why we included the dancers through the decades on the theme logo."

MamaP Beerbaum, Executive Leadership Team member, added, “The logo is elegantly simple and conveys a powerful message without overwhelming the senses.” The colors represent the various programs of the American Cancer Society while capturing the culture of Second Life in a way that presents our Relay with dignity while winking at our community’s vibrant personality.

For those who can't wait for 2024, the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" season is going on, with the recently completed Renaissance Festival as well as Outshop Cancer and other fundraisers. In December will be the Christmas Expo.

Go Relay!

Breaking News: SL20B Theme Revealed: "Our Fantastic Future"

For those who have been wondering what the theme for the upcoming Second Life Birthday, the virtual world's anniversary, celebrations, will be, the wait is finally over. In the blogpost about the upcoming Music Fest (more on that later), Linden Lab would include the logo (above) and mention the theme.

This year we wanted a theme that not only reflects on where we have been but embraces where we are going. We are celebrating twenty years of Second Life. That is an amazing realization. Who could have imagined in 2003 the vibrant, engaging, and creative community we are in 2023? We are living the future that was only a dream twenty years ago. Now we are projecting the future we hope to see as we move ahead another twenty years as both a community and a world.

We are pleased to announce our Birthday theme for this year: Our Fantastic Future. The cornerstone of this idea is what we would define as eco-futurism including sustainability, a focus on our environment, and the next generation of our world. Some might call this science fiction, but what is science fiction except a dream for a possible future? In Second Life we build worlds. Our worlds, our way. For SL20B, we invite you to show us your worlds of the future!

The event will be held from Thursday June 22 to Tuesday July 11.

Logo for 2022 RFL Season Chosen

On Friday September 3, Stingray Rainmaker announced that the logo for the 2022 Relay for Life fundraising season had been selected. The design selected was by Arizona Ballinger. The news was announced on the Second Life ACS website.

The 2022 Relay For Life of Second Life theme is: Heroes of Hope! - which will undoubtedly manifest itself through tales of heroes, both fiction and non-fiction. The theme will align perfectly as we pursue our goal of raising $500,000 USD in a single year...and as we close in on $5 Million USD, all-time.

We would like to thank everyone who submitted logo concepts over the last several weeks and we’re excited to unveil the final version of the 2022 Relay For Life of Second Life Theme Logo, designed by Arizona Ballinger.

This logo will serve as our flagship symbol for our Relay For Life efforts in 2022. We’re going to try something new this year by integrating the RFL logo into the theme logo (notice “O’ in Hope). Because we cannot sell anything with the ACS/RFL logo on it, we will also make an alternative version of the logo available to anyone who wishes to sell items for donations with the theme logo on them. You can get a copy of both logos in the “logo section” of the Relay Building on the American Cancer Society Island in Second Life.

The theme, "Heroes for Hope," was chosen on July 29.

Already, the logo is being used. In Steelhead Bay, Fuzzball Ortega, the captain of the Steelhead Salmons team, put it on display.

"We are excited to unveil the official 2021 Relay For Life of Second Life Theme Logo!!

"Our theme, "A Cure! For A Happy Ending!" brings to mind fairy tales and nursery rhymes. And what fairy tale happy ending is complete without a castle? With that in mind, we are excited to share the 2021 Theme Logo that will serve as our banner for our 2021 campaign as we march past our $1 Billionth Linden ($4 Million USD). "

Linden Lab Changes Second Life Logo Color

Over the weekend, Linden Lab announced it's symbol for the virtual world was getting a slight change. While the shape of the familiar eye in hand logo would remain, it would change from bluish-green to blue. Less noticeable was a change in the lettering.

The old logo has served us well but no longer projects our vision for SL as we move into this next decade. The new logo uses clearer, bolder type to communicate our optimism and confidence in what the future holds for SL. We retired the soft green color in favor of bright blue to reflect the boundless energy of our residents, who create amazing content and experiences. When it comes to what you can do with SL, the (blue) sky’s the limit!

The Lab stated it might be some time before the original logo is completely taken down from all of it's many web pages, "We don’t want to distract our teams from the important projects our community knows we’re working hard on. So you will see a mix of new and old logos for a while as teams find time to make updates."

Not much of a change, though it is the first one made since Second Life's launch seventeen years ago in 2003. So what do the residents think? As of the writing of this article, there were eight pages of comments on the thread in the official forums, and a few on the Virtualverse thread. Some like the new look. Others preferred the old one. And still others felt Linden Lab should have spent the time and effort here on fixing the bugs and glitches the virtual world still has.

For more information, check the Linden blog.

KVXN's New Logo

KVXN got it's start in 2011 as Nydia Tungsten's 24/7 radio station for fans to listen to between her DJ sessions. It got a following in the Sunweaver/Angels community with nicknames like "Rita's other white meat" (Rita Mariner is the leader of the Sunweavers). But in recent months, KVXN has gone through some changes. Now a full fledged Internet radio station, many of it's listeners tune in from outside Second Life. With the change comes a new shiny logo. It was revealed yesterday.

"For a good time with a bad girl, KVXN Radio."

Logo Chosen For InWorldz's Successor Islandz

While development on Islandz, the successor of the closed virtual world InWorldz, continues, there is a little news. They now have a logo. It shows the letters big and bold, with an outline of a palm tree and a fish. There's also a wooden sign with the letters "Virtual World," in front of tropical plant leaves.

Earlier on the Islandz Discord chat, it was announced three logos were being considered, and opinions on which was best were welcome. The one that eventually was chosen got complements from several people. When I asked if this was now going to be the logo, I was told this was most likely it, though there is the possibility of a small change or two.

Also, it looks like there will be no need for former residents of InWorldz to register new accounts on Islandz. They should be able to use their old account names and passwords when it opens.

No date for the opening of Islandz has yet been set, official or closed beta, has been set.

News and Commentary: Linden Lab Offers Apology to Strawberry Singh Following Takedown Demand

By Bixyl Shuftan

Protecting what they consider trademarked images and names has been an issue for companies for decades. For instance, for years the Lego corporation has asked people to call it's building toys "Lego bricks" and not "legos." Some have gotten a reputation for going overboard, such as when Disney once demanded a preschool paint over images of Mickey Mouse and other characters. For Linden Lab, the issue of trademarks usually comes up when one of it's residents makes an item inworld that is trademarked by someone else. But it's own trademarks haven't been an issue for many years, until now.

Strawberry Singh is a noted and award-winning blogger of Second Life, one whom has been doing so for years. On December 13, she announced she was removing one of her tutorial videos, "Introduction to Second Life." The reason, one of the Lindens, Tia Linden, complained to Youtube about it, and Youtube gave Strawberry 48 hours to resolve the issue before taking action on her account. Wondering what was wrong, Strawberry emailed Tia asking what was the issue. Tia soon answered, saying while they appreciated her continued support of Second Life, "we have not given you permission to use Linden Lab's intellectual property in the manner of which you have done." She emailed her again, but did not get an answer by the time the 48 hours was almost up and deleted the video, saying in her blog post, "in the future, I probably won’t be doing any other tutorials like this where I show how to use Second Life because their logos might pop up in the videos." She would tell Hamlet Au when he asked shortly afterwards that she didn't think the Lab cared she was promoting the virtual world.

As Strawberry's blog has a lot of readers, it didn't take long for word to get around, to New World Notes, Modem World, Living Virtually, and presumably other blogs. Hamlet Au would write, "Linden Lab's actions are contrary in spirit if not in letter to its stated policies around medua use of its trademarks." Inara Pey wrote, "the statement that certain images and logos now cannot be use in any capacity. If this is now the case, it is worrying for many of us who routinely blog about Second Life and have used such images and logos. ... Where do we now stand if we are now seeing a shift in position from Linden Lab? Are we now in violation of a new prohibition on image use?" Mona Eberhardt's title of her commentary was more blunt, "Yet Another Stupid D**k Move by Linden Lab." Daniel Voyager has yet to write about the incident, as of the writing of this article, but did end up retweeting a statement from Ebbe Linden (left).

Eventually, the Lab began to realize it had a public relations mess on it's hands. Ebbe Linden ended up defending Tia Linden from an angry Tweet by Mona Eberhardt, "I'm willing to take all kinds of heat, but suggesting that Tia is anything but an incredible team player and professional crosses the line for me. ... We will review policies that make things better and easier for us all though."On Thursday, they issued a public apology on the official Second Life blog.

Recently, the Linden Lab IP team sent a takedown request regarding a YouTube video created by the great Strawberry Singh. She and many others have pointed out that this seems like a mistake, and we agree. We have reversed that takedown request and have reached out directly to Strawberry, but would also like to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to her.

Strawberry, we feel fortunate to have you as a member of our Second Life community (and Sansar as well!), and we are grateful for the public support that your blog, YouTube channel, and other social media activity provides. We’re fans of your work, we are sorry for this misstep, and we hope you will continue sharing your awesome videos.

Following the apology, the Lab explained that the incident came from it's policy of protecting it's trademarked images, and that it would be revised to allow people to write about and video to promote Second Life without worry of hassle, "While we still need policies in place to protect our trademarks, we will apply them as permissively as we can with the goal of encouraging and supporting our community."

Strawberry would tell the Newser, "Aside from a big thank you to all of my readers that gave me so much support yesterday I really don't know what else to say. I was so surprised at the response my post got as my reason for doing the post was just to inform others of what happened so they don't experience the same thing I did. I never expected that people would be so vocal and supportive and do all that they did for me yesterday. I was also pleasantly surprised with the Lab's response too. I was not expecting a response at all so all of it was so encouraging and uplifting and I'm so happy that the end result will be hopefully a better policy for all Second Life bloggers and bloggers in the future."

Linden Lab also mentioned what happened with a parody blog in January 2007 in which the blogger invited the Lab to issue a "cease and desist" letter. But instead Linden Lab's lawyer issued an "uncease and desist" letter, stating, "Linden Lab objects to any implication that it would employ lawyers incapable of distinguishing such obvious parody."

Also at the time, there was at least one instance of someone making modifications of the eye in hand symbol for the purposes of promoting Second Life. In early 2006, Yiffy Yaffle came up with a "Second Life Furry" logo as a way for sims to be identified as having a population of furs. The symbol is seldom seen today, though presumably from lack of interest.

Perhaps the incident was the result of one overzealous employee, but unfortunately Linden Lab has a history of making foul-ups such as this. While the Lab did apologize to Strawberry, that the incident happened in the first place is likely to be seen by many longtime residents as just the latest in a long series of blunders.

SL14B Logo Revealed

On the night of February 22, Doc Gascoigne announced the theme of the SL14B, the Second Life Fourteenth Birthday, in chat: Carnivalesque. A few days ago on the Second Life blog, it became official.

If this is a birthday, then we’re going to have a festival worthy of Second Life®! Strike up the band, toss on your glad rags, and join us at the SL®14B Community Celebration as we hit the carnival.
While much of the interest around virtual reality has shifted to singular experiences, largely fueled by the pursuit of headset-focused content, we want to remind you of the joy of hundreds of people from all over coming together in one place in celebration, and form a carnival-like atmosphere that you simply cannot achieve alone. Let’s challenge all the perceptions, break all the molds, and show everyone that we know how to celebrate.

But what was truly revealed was the logo for the event, designed by Harper Beresford.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Second Life Birthday.

Announcement: Relay for Life in Second Life Chooses Logo For 2017

Last night in the Relay for Life volunteer group, an announcement was made. They had selected the logo for next year's Relay Season.

We are very pleased to announce the winning entry in the 2017 Relay For Life of Second Life Logo Contest. Here is the winning design, Your Official 2017 Passport To Hope Logo, can be viewed on the website http://relayforlifeofsecondlife.org/

The winning logo was submitted by.Lizzy Gracemount.  Lizzy put tremendous creativity, thought, and passion into her design.  The Official 2017 Passport To Hope Logo will be made available in the coming new year in various sizes.

Thank You and Congratulations Lizzy!

On the website, the meanings of the logo were explained

Lizzy ... explained that each color is taken from “…the Official ACS Color Palette. Every color has a special meaning from courage to peace to love and harmony and above all for cancer research. I chose the colors to fit this aspect of RFL and why we relay every year. The passport stamps are from a public domain vector stock, colored to reflect the various aspects of RFL OF SL. Every aspect of the piece reflects the journey every survivor or cancer patient has traveled during their journey.”

Lizzy selected all her colors from the Official ACS Color Palette and included the symbolic meaning of each color.
