Linden Lab Looking For Engineering Manager

On Linden Lab's "help wanted" page, there's a new opening that suggests they're taking the development of their mobile viewer fairly seriously. It's for a manager for the engineering team for their Mobile Viewer.

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to help bring Second Life to mobile devices.

This is a technical lead role, reporting to Second Life's Viewer & Server Director of Engineering. In this highly collaborative position, you will write software, architect new systems, mentor staff and manage a small team responsible for bringing the mobile Second Life viewer to life.

This is a hybrid role, with some expectation of in-office presence in our Seattle office or San Francisco HQ.

The requirements for the job are:

8+ years experience as software engineer including mobile development; 3+ years in a technical leadership role

Modern web, game, C# and Unity development experience

Familiarity with game networking, UDP/TCP

A track record of leading teams and shipping successful projects

Earnest interest in learning new technologies

History of working with cloud based computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP

Great communication, awareness, self motivation and collaboration attributes

Familiarity defining the strategic direction for AI initiatives and ensuring alignment with broader business goals

Curiosity for experimenting with and implementing novel AI capabilities to solve complex problems and create new user experiences

The Lab did say people can apply anyway even if they don't meet every single requirement. The salary will be between $163,000 and $223,000.

Could YOU Be a Newser Reporter?

The Newser takes pride in bringing you the news big and small from across Second Life. And we do so on a daily basis. But, it takes a team. We're not a one-man blog that posts every so often when the person has a little time. We started off as a team, and we continue as one.

But, we have real lives outside our Second ones. We have jobs and friends there. And when we do come here, some of us have commitments besides the Newser, such as marriages, a community club, etc. And of course our real lives can change, meaning someone has to slow down or stop writing for a while.

So we could always use a little more help.

Are you someone with a love of writing and a love of Second Life? If so, maybe the Newser is the place for you. Writing experience is preferred, and those interested we would like to see examples of what you've written in the past.

It should be noted that we are not a sensationalist media outlet, nor slam anyone just for the sake of ratings. What we desire is "news you can use" that informs people about what Second Life has to offer and the good it can do. And of course entertain our audience a little along the way. Our motto is "reporting on the people, places, and events of Second Life," and do our best to live up to it.

Send a notecard and IM to Bixyl Shuftan, or email at bixylshuftan@ gmail.com

Thank you for your interest

Linden Lab Hiring Senior Product Manager, Says Job Will Impact "Millions of Customers' Lives"

Linden Lab currently has several job openings, including one of which one sentence has sparked a little speculation on the company's future plans.

Among the current positions the Lab is looking to fill is Senior Product Manager. This is a position in which one can work remotely from one of fifteen US states.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a Senior Product Manager (remote) to elevate multiple facets of our Second Life product. This person would also enable growth and scale by shipping features that improve our customer experience. This role reports to the VP, Product. You will have a direct impact on solutions that help us attract users, enhance engagement and drive retention. This is a great opportunity for a thought leader with strong technical acumen, exceptional communication skills, and thoughtful execution.

What We’ll Offer You

The stability of an established company with new startup momentum. An unparalleled opportunity to create  relationships, systems, strategies, and culture. An environment where your voice will be heard and your impact deeply felt. A sense of belonging where your work is appreciated and rewarded.

As a Senior Product Manager, you’ll utilize in-depth product knowledge to successfully drive key projects on Second Life. You’ll work alongside a supportive team of people across engineering, design, QA, and other cross-functional teams to build products and new experiences and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the original metaverse. And finally, the pleasure of seeing your solutions ship, scale, and make a measurable impact on millions of customers' lives across the globe.

*  *  *  *  *

"Millions of customers' lives." That's quite a comment, considering it's active userbase even if counting those who log on just once every month is just a bit more than half a million. Perhaps it's boasting. But in New World Notes, Hamlet Au suggested the words might reflect the Lab's hopes of how the upcoming Second Life mobile app will expand the virtual world's userbase. He stated that IMVU and Roblox experienced huge growth after they came up with mobile apps that allowed users to access their platforms from smaller devices and not just computers, in the case of IMVU expanding to seven million who log on at least once a month. Roblox tripled it's userbase from 14 to 43 million. While a place mostly for kids, two-thirds of it's userbase under 16, still numbers not to ignore.

With these numbers in mind, the Lab has reasons for optimism that when the mobile app is finally out, Second Life's numbers will experience similar growth. Time will tell.

Linden Lab Job Listing Sparks Questions of Possible Android/iPhone Device Viewer

On Linden Lab's list of job openings, one that appeared recently is getting some attention, one for a "Senior Mobile Engineer" for Second Life.

Linden Lab is looking for an innovative mobile app engineer to deliver a compelling, responsive mobile interface into Second Life. If you’re passionate about the latest cross platform mobile technologies and would be psyched to wake up every morning knowing that your efforts will enhance the largest, most successful virtual world on the Internet then we want to hear from you!

Among the knowledge and skills needed for the position is "Experience developing consumer-oriented mobile applications for Android and IOS." This would suggest that Linden Lab is getting back into making a viewer for mobile devices, possibly for Android phones and iPhones, but at least for Android-run tablets and iPads.

In March 2014, Linden Lab partnered with OnLive to produce SL Go for tablets. But after OnLive was bought by Sony a year later, this partnership and SL Go came to an end. Months later, Bright Canopy made it possible to play Second Life through a tablet again. But they haven't been without problems, such as a month-long service outage. What appears to be in development is a mobile viewer entirely in Linden Lab's hands and independent of anyone else whom could be bought up, go out of business, or otherwise run into problems.

Inara Pey reminded her readers that Ebbe Linden talked about the issue during the SL15B, saying the Lab was "seeking the right approach for investment in a mobile solution ... we're thinking hard about mobile." Oz and Grumpity Linden did as well, saying "The potential for some kind of mobile solution for Second Life is being discussed." Grumpity had also mentioned the cost to users was a concern, saying the Lab didn't want a moble viewer that would require charging it's viewers a lot. When New World Notes brought up the issue, Will Burns responded in the comments that he had asked Ebbe Linden in his visit to Linden Lab why they didn't buy up OnLive themselves, and stated the answer was that "At the time ... Linden Lab didn't get hands-on with the process. ...  it would seem at least *something* I said up there sunk in during my visit." New World Notes would also speculate, " If they're only hiring a Senior Mobile Engineer now, it's probably going to be at least 8-12 months before we see an Alpha version of a mobile viewer for SL."

There is an upcoming "Town Hall" event with Ebbe Altberg on Thursday September 13. So there might be some answers to this issue (and others) then.

Could *You* Be A Reporter?

Over the years, the Second Life Newser has had many talented writers within it's ranks. DrFran Babcock, CNN iReporter Any1 Gynoid, and many others have made their mark in the paper. But the Newser has always been open to new talent, and new writers coming in. Often these new writers have been readers of the paper.

Could you be a writer? We're looking for people who can write well, of course. But we're looking for people who can do a story several paragraphs long at least once a week. We're looking for people whom want to know more about Second Life and want to share what they've found. And of course looking for people with a great love of writing.

If you have all of these qualities, there just might be a future in our team of Second Life journalists for you. IM the editor inworld, or send an email if you're interested.

Manager Wanted for Green Meadows "Xanadu" Club

Perri Prinz is looking for a manager for the Green Meadows Club. Originally named club Xanadu, it was later renamed Green Meadows after a club in Perri's stories to avoid possible trouble with the makers of the movie. But her friends have continued to call it "Perri's Xanadu." The club itself was made as a tribute to the music of the 60s & 70's.  Perri herself is known for having a great collection of music from the time period, though is currently taking a break from DJing.

It is requested that those applying to be manager be familiar with the music of the 60's and 70's, as well as the 80's. Perri is flexible as to what hours the manager can run events, though there is the goal of coordinating with other clubs of the FCA, the club alliance Green Meadows is part of.

Green Meadows is jointly owned by Perri Prinz and RECoyote Minds, and is at HV Community (67, 207, 4051)
