OKTOBERFEST RETURNS TO BAY CITY

Autumnal carnival and party offers music, merriment, and fun

BAY CITY, SL -  Oktoberfest is a beloved folk festival honored in Germany and elsewhere around the world.

The Bay City Alliance is joining in as well, and is once again honoring Oktoberfest from the 19th of September to the 5th of October, 2025, at the Bay City Fairgrounds in North Channel ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/North%20Channel/128/128/24/ ).

Oktoberfest occurs annually from the end of September until the first Sunday in October. Heralding the harvest and all it provides, Oktoberfest features a beer festival, numerous traditional German foods, and a carnival.

With the carnival and biergarten available for the full two week fun, the event will culminate in a party in the Biergarten from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. SLT on the 5th of October.  Providing themed music is DJ GoSpeed of KONA Stream.

Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab® and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest group for Residents of Bay City.

A Glance At The Warblood City Autumn Carnival

In Warblood City, their Autumn Carnival is going on. This family-friendly event is fun for just about everyone. There's rides, such as the ferris wheel. There are games, such as a few shooting galleries. There are performances. There's raffles in which you can get tickets for a chance at a nice prize. And there's the food.

Avatars of all shapes and sizes are welcome, within reason such as dressing decently. The area was decked out for fall, with some pumpkins and Halloween decorations.

I had a few words with one of the staff, Mina (scyredstrike Resident), who showed me around. There was a graveyard, which had zombies lumbering toward people. There was the kiddie food court. One area she was hesitant to go in as it was full of creepy dolls. There was also a Halloween walkthrough.

EOTB: The "Marketplace UI Overhaul"

On Tuesday September 16, Linden Lab announced on their blog they had done a "Marketplace UI Overhaul." The main purpose was to make the Second Life Marketplace easier to use on a smartphone or tablet, but there were other changes.

We’re making some much-needed updates to the Second Life Marketplace. Our goal is to create a modern, unified experience that is more responsive and easier to use on any device. We’ve been working on the UI and UX, and these changes are rolling out across desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers.

The Lab stated the changes are a work in progress and some adjustments are not yet finished or haven't been launched yet.

Right now, the new responsive product, category, and search results pages are live, and we are still working on making the rest of the site responsive as well. You may have noticed that some other pages, including the Marketplace home page, have been updated with some of the new elements, but are not yet fully responsive. We are still in an awkward in-between phase as we work to unify the presentation of all the pages on the site.

This includes "Image Zoom" to help with crisp images when pictures are enlarged and "Page Gutters" that are thicker on wider screens but should be slimmer on thinner ones.

On some Discord threads, another change has been noticed. On some pages, inworld locations have been removed. Some called this desireable as on an outdated page one can find themselves plummeting down to earth or being thrown out of a yard by a security system as the store the inworld location that used to be there had been abandoned.

The Return of The Lumiya Viewer?

Some residents may remember the Lumiya Viewer, a third-party viewer that allowed access to Second Life through tablets and cellphones, and following the shutting down of SL GO for a time it was the only way to do so. But some time after the Newser wrote about it in March 2016, updates for it stopped, and it was eventually dropped from the Lab's list of approved viewers.

After that, nothing more would we heard about the viewer until a few days ago on Friday September 12, a user on Reddit calling himself Kaleon stated he was "the last member of Alina 's staff," hadn't been in contact with her for years, and was working on restoring the Lumiya viewer. But he needed help.

As the last member of Alina 's staff, and not having been in contact with her for nearly a decade, I am working on reverse engineering and opening up Lumiya Viewer to be worked on in a public GitHub. I am looking for coders, app builders and more to help with this task.

Kaleon would say, "This is a decompile that's been worked over with AI and tools to get it semi-functional. It is nowhere near ready to run, or use, and has a LOT of work that's needed done to get it ready."

Daniel Voyager would guess the new Lumiya would be ready sometime in 2026.

Crim Mip Honored At Sunweaver Memorial

Yesterday, Monday September 15, Shockwave Yareach informed me the Sunweaver Memorial, where members of the community who passed away have permanent candles burning in their memory, was expanded and a marker placed for Crim Mip whom died last week. :"A grim day," he commented, "The Sunweavers memorial had to expand to hold so many.  I didn't plan this thing to hold over 10 people."

Crim's marker is next to Lacy Musketeer's, with whom he was partnered with in the past.

Performance At The Varro in Honor of Crim Mip

On Saturday November 13 at 3PM, there was an event at The Varro high above the Queue sim. About every week, Merryjest Starchild has a performance there. But after the recent death of Crim Mip, he dedicated the concert to him in his honor.

Merryjest, a trained opera singer in real life, would perform for about an hour, with an occasional moment of commentary. Crim's partner Kari was among the people there in the audience.

Details are still being worked out for the date and time of the memorial service

Announcement: Crim Mip Has Passed, Memorial TBA

Crim Mip, known in the real world as Karl Meyer, was a person whose ripples extended to many ponds. From the Memphis Furmeet, the MLP community (Trotsdale, Nisa, Ibex Empire, etc), the spiritual and Pagan community (Arashiryuu Yashiro, Practicing Magic for a time, and others), the SL boating and aeronautics communities… and others I probably don’t know of as he was very active.

I first met him in Nisa while exploring, seeking my home in the Second Life’s MLP community. There I met many others in a heavily mythologically influenced sim. The Nisean sim grouping, with Crim Mip as one of the several co-owners, grew to a landmass of Nisa, Thessalia, Exmoor, The Ibex Empire (aka Ibexia), Los Qwhilla, Qwhildrasil, and many other locations of the rp world. For a time this landmass resided north of – and joined to – Trotsdale. Later, Trotsdale eventually moved to join Neighberry’s landmass, before Nisa finally became Dreaming Twilight and moved instead to reside in a plot in Ontario due to funding.

Crim is/was the second of the strongest pillars of the Dreaming Twilight. Now another of the trees of the sacred grove has lost its leaves, reminding us of how tightly Life and Death are interwoven.

Crim leaves behind a loving girlfriend, Karla Voilpa, the remaining members of the Dreaming Twilight and Arashiryuu Yashiro groups, his real life friends and relatives… and countless members of the many communities he was part of.

He will be missed. He is loved. He is gone… Yet he now blows in the wind, creeps in the vines, falls from the sky in raindrops, dances in the tides of the sea, and warms us in our hearths.

Our thoughts are with all his loved ones. The Dreaming Twilight will continue. The memories will be maintained.

Please contact Amehana Arashi (Amehana Ishtari), Oscelot Halaan, and KariaKae Karu for more info.

You can also join the Dreaming Twilight [ secondlife:///app/group/c20ee681-8a58-6d0b-4f84-03c7aeece461/about ] and Arashiryuu Yashiro [ secondlife:///app/group/b6fef2dc-b13f-6da5-3561-7b3bc92efd07/about ] groups to be notified of any upcoming planned events and sporadic gatherings.

There will be an in-world memorial at the Dreaming Twilight plot

Date: To Be Announced

Time: To Be Announced

More on Crim Mip's Passing

After word began to go around about Crim Mip's death yesterday, people were moved to do different things. At his new home Wooburn, a wreath was placed at the church in his honor.

Inside was a small table with Crim's picture, candles, and a book for people to place notecards with any words of well wishes. The church is at Wooburn (101/128/43).

At the pub near church, friends of Crim gathered to talk about him and some things he did.

The date for the memorial service has yet to be announced, But there is one event going on today in Crim's honor. When Merryjest Starchild heard the news, he announced his event today at the Varro at 3PM SL time would be dedicated to him. Queue (192/238/2493).

More details to come.

Update: People have been telling me that they talked to Crim just a few days before his passing, and he seemed just fine. So it seems whatever happened was sudden.

Breaking News: Crim Mip Has Died

The Newser has been informed resident Crim Mip has passed away. His partner Kari (KariaKae Karu) stated he was found deceased yesterday, Thursday September 11. The exact time and cause is still unknown. He was 62 in real life.

Crim has been in Second Life since January 2007.  He was the real life and SL partner of Lacy Musketeer until her passing in July 2019. In October 2023, he would marry Kari. He was a resident of the Roshaven community, and more recently Wooburn. In the past, he was a DJ at the Sunweaver's Club Cutlass.

Stay tuned for more information.

*Correction:* Earlier it wasn't known Crim had recently gotten a place at Wooburn. or his RL age.

EOTB: New Linden Home Theme: Ridgewood Conclave

At the Second Life Birthday in June, Patch Linden would announce the next Linden Home theme would be soon, and called "The Ridgewood Conclave." Yesterday on September 11, the Lab announced the first sims with these homes were now open

A brand new Linden Homes theme has arrived, bringing a fresh sense of style and calm living to Bellisseria.

Ridgewood Enclave blends contemporary design with lush landscaping, offering Premium Plus Residents a neighborhood that feels both modern and connected to nature. Set among palm trees and winding sidewalks, this community balances clean architectural lines with soft greenery, creating a warm and breezy retreat.

Patch Linden would announce the news in the forums:

A new Linden Homes theme has arrived, bringing clean lines, modern living, and a peaceful suburban feel.

Ridgewood Enclave is now open to Premium Plus Residents. This warm and breezy neighborhood blends contemporary design with soft landscaping, giving each street a fresh and refined look. Set among palm trees, curving sidewalks, and layered greenery, it feels connected to nature without losing its sense of structure and style.

There are six varieties of Ridgewave homes: Brackenrock, Crestline, Claystone, Duskieedge, Shadowline, and Vellstone. These are made to look like they're built with brick or stone walls. Most are two stories, some with a small tower. Two models had car garage areas. The neighborhood was full of subtropical greenery, much like what one could find in Florida.

As of the writing of this article, some of the homes were already claimed, but some looked like they were still available, at least for now.

The 22 sims are in a group just off the southwest corner of Bellisseria. As of now, there is no direct connection to the rest of the Linden Home continent, but given the history of Linden Home development this will almost certainly change.

For more information, check the Linden Blog.

Update on Luskwood

Earlier, the Newser reported that the Luskwood Big Tree was empty, which was a big contrast in the past to some people always being around. As it turns out, there still are several people of the Luskwood community always on. They're just not always at the tree.

There's a small piece of beach property not too far from Lusk, and lately people from the community have been gathering there to relax for a change of scenery.

So all is still relatively well with Second Life's oldest active community, and it is hoped once the real lives of the founders settle down, the builders can get back to the long-delayed updating of their line of avatars.

Remembering Sept 11

It was 24 years ago today that the deadliest terrorist attack on the United States, the September 11 attacks, took place. Carried out by members of the Islamofascist group Al Quedia, they would hijack four airliners, crashing one into the Pentagon in Arlington Virginia, and two into the World Trade Center in New York. A fourth airliner heading to Washington DC crashed after it's passengers found out what was going on and rebelled. Almost three thousand were killed, and a shocked America found itself at war with a shadowy enemy.

Second Life would come about a few years later, and over time, there have been numerous memorials to the fallen. Some were large and detailed, such as the one by Alliez Mysterio, the Stairclimb Tribute, and the Stagg Island memorial. Sadly these grand tributes are gone. But there are still some memorials left in this virtual world.

One is the Gold Haven Memorial, "A Tribute to The Victims & Heroes Who Lost Their Lives on September 11, 2001"

High above Copperhead Road is the Flight 93 Memorial, a tribute to the hijacked airplane whose passengers fought back, and crashed near Shanksville Pennsylvania.

At Miramare, there was this unnamed memorial, lights representing the Twin Towers beaming into the sky.

While, not 9/11 specific, there is the Memorial to Victims of Terrorism Throughout The World, located in Iris.

Commentary:

As those who remember the attacks know, within weeks America would respond to the evildoers who brought death to our country, liberating Afghanistan from the Taliban which provided a safe haven for the terrorists. The mastermind Bin Laden slipped away, but would be tracked down and killed several years later.

Today, a generation later, America has changed. Politics has become more sharply divisive than at any other time in living memory, and the country has become "A house divided" with politicians and people alike looking at the opposing faction with fear and hate, blaming them for their troubles and accusing them of destroying the USA. While we may worry and panic at news headlines, we can also take a moment to remind ourselves that when confronted, we can all be a nation united against a common enemy, and take a moment to remember the fallen.

September 11 - "A Fireman's Prayer"

When I am called to duty,
whenever the flames my rage,
give me strength to save some
life whatever be their age.
Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late,
or save an old person from
the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert,
and hear the weakest shout.
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me.
To guard my every neighbor,
protect his property.
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
please bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.
