This past weekend, the Relayers were partying it up at Relaystock. But the weekend before, attention was on Team Sunbeamers and Team Roos With A Dream with the Tenth Annual RFL Sunbeamer Air Show, taking place on Farshore Field at Sunlight Bay. Besides the exhibits and attractions such as balloon riding, there were two air squadrons performing for the crowd, as well as DJ Kalya and the Roos.

Press Release: Tenth Annual Sunbeamer RFL Air Show

Welcome to the 10th Annual Sunbeamer Relay For Life Air Show

The Sunbeamers welcomes you to the 10th Annual Sunbeamer RFL Air Show Fly-in on Saturday May the 4th be with you between the hours of 8AM to 5PM SLT. This year is themed on Star Wars. Scheduled events include

Anemone Wing Walking  noon till 1pm

Hawks Aerobatic Team 1pm till 2pm

DJ Kayla and the Kangaroos 3pm till 5pm

There will be planes on display with information about them along with flight demonstrations. You can rezz Your Own Plane and stunt around yourself but do ask you clean it up afterwards. Some Pilots will be on hand to give rides both plane and balloon.

We have two major contest running. The Bicycle Powered Blimp Race and a Bumper Car Contest! At either contest upon a donation to the American Cancer Society kiosk you then acquire a free bicycle powered blimp provided for each entry. You can not use one of your own in the contest unless it is the same thing that is being given. This makes for an even playing field. Also we require that only participants fly the course as non-players will cause the timers to be thrown off. The course runs through the sky were you must pass through rings spaced at intervals that vary in height and direction. Missing a ring causes a disqualified time. You may run the course as many times as you like hopefully bettering your time. Contest runs through the air show hours and the prize of a Aerial Outfitters Sky Skiff Airship will be sent to the winner at the air shows end at 5PM.

The bumper car contest is no ordinary bumper car setup, remember it's the Sunbeamers who are not noted as being a very sane group. The contestants may experience changing obstacles, exploding cars, and maybe even...cannon fire? Oh My. Yes the spectators are armed and willing. But wait there’s mooore, also passengers can ride along, and try to shoot the other cars! Chaos!! The contest will be in 5 minute runs with trophies awarded at the end of each. You can enter as many contest as you like.
There will be a carnival midway with a number of activities to participate in. At each activity we ask for a donation to the Relay For Life kiosk located at each, not required but it would be nice.

On the field are Avatar Cannons! For a donation you will be shot out as an Avatar Cannonball!! Oh, and should say a provided parachute gently brings you back down. You keep the RFL 2024 logo textured parachute for free.

You can take turns dunking either your partner, a Sunbeamer, or anyone in a dunk tank, Just onnnnne little detail, instead of a beanbag you fire a German 88mm shell into its target!! There will be lots of other activities so come explore.

Sunbeamer and Roos Air Show

Saturday May 29 was one of the Relay for Life's Sunbeamer team's main annual events: the Sunbeamer Air Show at Farshore Field in Sunlight Bay. For the past few years, it's been known as the Sunbeamer and Roos Air Show, due to "Roos With a Dream" taking part. The event was from 9AM to 5PM.

There were planes flying, and numerous warplanes on display at the airport. There was also bicycle blimp racing, the course set up by Shockwave Yareach and Cynthia Farshore.

There were also balloon tours of the area, courtesy of Skylark"Snowbuns" Lefavre. Other attractions included carnival games and rides, shooting at the dunk tank with a German 88, bumper cars, and more.

The high point was at 3PM when DJ Kalaya and a number of the 'Roos got on stage, dancing away, with numerous Sunbeamers and others in the audience dancing away, and sending donations into the kiosk. The two teams together would raise more than 60,000 Linden dollars that day, the totals announce by Cynthia.

Sunbeamer Airshow went well, We and the Roos would like to thank all that came and donated. We have totals of: Sunbeamers L$38,800 ; Roos L$28,050 for a two team effort of L$66, 850! Woot!

As of now, Team Sunbeamers has raised almost 655,000 Linden dollars, closing in on the next fundraising level. Roos With A Dream have raised just shy of 423,000. But both teams are far from finished. There are the Bid Me Events. There are the multi-team events like the Moon Dances every week and the Relaystock later this month. And of course in June there's the Relay Weekend when the teams walk around the track.

Go Sunbeamers! Go Roos! Go Relay!

Flying in Style

I'm not a fan of  "supermanning," and have looked for alternatives to just simply flying around and defying gravity. My bat avatars are a favorite, but it's not always Halloween. Fortunately, there's this rocket-powered sled that I picked up at the SL16B. No need to rezz it on the ground, just attach/add, and take off in the air. So at least from my point of view, I'm flying in style.

Cartoon of the Day: Batty Catty

Taken at Dreamworld Gem. Someone had a cat with bat wings. I couldn't help but wonder if the critter might not like that too much.

SL Video: " Longest Automated Flight Certification"

(Click here if the video fails to play)

From SLAviationNetwork on September 12, and pointed out to the Newser by Alden Cortes. As for as everyone is aware, this is the longest automated flight in Second Life. Here, a helicopter automated by Zipperhead Wurgle traveled for a total of 322 sims. There would be one instance of the filmer crashing, and having to catch up to the helicopter. Otherwise the flight went fine.

Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "Ingenuity: First Aircraft on Mars!" And "Flight"

"Ingenuity: First Aircraft on Mars!"

Saturday September 4

10 AM to 11 AM SL time

We were not even sure it would work, but Ingenuity, the first helicopter on Mars, indeed the first manoeuvrable aircraft to operate outside the Earth’s atmosphere, has been a stunning success!

First we will examine the conditions and mechanics of flight and what makes Ingenuity’s performance a “Wright Brothers” moment.

Then we will follow Ingenuity’s progress from the drawing board through the dozen or more flights it has taken so far, with a look at how it can operate when its ‘pilot’ is 100s of millions of miles away, plus a peak at possible missions it might undertake in its future.

Finally, we will explore where and how other craft might operate in our solar system now that this technological breakthrough has been achieved.

"Flight"

Saturday September 4

9PM to 10PM SL time

Welcome aboard Science Circle flight 409, covering the scientific principles and technologies that enable and enhance air transport. We ask that you please fasten your seatbelts before we discuss the fundamentals, from aerodynamics to aircraft stability. Take a few minutes to locate and understand the mechanisms of aircraft engines, whose designs have evolved for fuel efficiency and noise reduction.

As we experience astounding innovations in areas like material science, descriptions of the benefits to the environment and your comfort in the cabin will be deployed. Thank you for choosing the Science Circle. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your Flight!

Reader Submitted: "Rough Sim Crossing"

From Deanna Shadow-Lancaster (Deanna Lancaster), and taken at RFL Comfort not long after the Relay Weekend, "Silver had some fun with sim crossings in the party truck. Ven was driving when that happened. Well, he was apparently driving at top speeds to see who would make it through without crashing. Whomever was left on won the pool and the money went into a kiosk."

Cartoon of the Day

Taken at the Relay track with Nance Clowes. We went flying up in the air after a sim crossing. What would cause something like this in real life, I had one idea.

Cartoon of the Day

Taken at Virtual Ability. One thing many futuristic movies have in common is the flying car, which while there have been numerous prototypes not one has made it to production. Fortunately in Second Life, they're not so hard to get.

SL Video: "Gee's Wonder Island Part One"

(Click here if the video fails to load)

The first part of Lokirat's video review of "Gee's Wonder Island," in which she looks at the island itself, taking a look around and trying a couple contraptions. In the second video, she gives the boats a try. In the third, she ventures to the sky platform to look around and runs into a few pranks.

The RFL Fourth Annual Farshore Field Air Show

Last weekend on Saturday May 20, the Sunweaver community held their yearly air show, the Fourth Annual Team Sunbeamer Farshore Field Air Show and Fly-In. The event raised some money for the community's Relay for Life team, but the point was to have fun, whether flying around, going about an airborne obstacle course in a blimp, or parachuting after being shot out of a cannon.

See the pictures in Events.
