Inside Anna's Many Murders

Viewing the machinima posted in this publication on 6 August, I found myself quite intrigued by it. I wondered what was behind it, the motivation or inspiration or, even...compulsion, if that were the case.

I contacted the creator of the machinima, Bryn Oh, whose responses to my questions were quite intriguing to say the least. Anna's Many Murders was born of a daydream when Toronto's subway lost power. All passengers had been lost in their own electronic worlds (blackberries, ipods, etc.), ignorning those around them. When the subway came to an abrupt halt, everything else stopped and the silence and stillness in the car was eerie (enter the Twilight Zone?).

The daydream was of a future where no one would carry additions to their bodies but instead have them surgically implanted. For example, a nose app would "smell fresh baked bread 3 blocks away" and an eye app would "set out a digital course...to find the bakery."

Hence, the victims in this machinima are largely metallic in shape and Anna symbolically appears more human. This is representative of the world in which Anna lives, a world where everyone has become almost inhuman because of the many apparati they carry.

Trapped in this dehumanized world, Anna is desperately lonely. She glosses over reality with her own imagination in order to function and be happy. In the process, she becomes quite mad and in her madness, she seeks to annihilate those mechanical beings which make up her world.

Anna's Many Murders is somewhat (and I use the term loosely) representative of today's society, the world in which we all live. Filled with digital "apps" that we can't seem to live without, we have lost touch with reality and the beauty of nature which surrounds us.

Unfortunately the patron who had supplied Bryn Oh with the sim to build Anna's Many Murders had come into hard times a few months ago when Anna's opened and Bryn could no longer afford to keep up the rent. The build has since come down but fortunately for us, she was able to make a machinima of her exhibit beforehand.

Omega Properties’ Owner Vanishes, Renters Lose Homes and Deposits

While on the trail of another story, I ran into a former renter of Omega Properties. After he'd been living there for a year and a half, he found himself suddenly evicted even though he had paid his teir in advance. Others had been evicted too, one woman losing nearly a quarter-million Lindens. Calling the staff for help, he found the owner of the company, Chaos Ametza, was nowhere to be found.

Where Second Life Can Really Suck

The Transylvanian region celebrated seven years in Second Life last week, Saturday Aug. 13th being the anniversary. The Transylvania sim itself is not a true roleplay area, but a hangout for vamps. Except for the "Bloodlines" vamps, whom will be booted. If you ever feel like braving a little danger, or feel like being a "pain in the neck," check this place out for some spooky fun. Besides the gothic town you port in, there are a few other sims in the place to explore.

Transylvania is always naturally at Midnight, the pictures were set to dusk for effect.

St. Helens Erupts in Steelhead, Local Residents Party in Celebration

In the early evening of Friday August 12th in the Steelhead region, Mt St. Helens errupted. The eruption was deliberately planned, but was probably larger than intended, and earlier than the intended time of 7PM SL time. Pyrocastic flows of lava poured down the side and into a nearby lake. A number of trees were destroyed, but the only property damage appeared to be a tent set afire by embers that drifted over and a boat in the lake that had caught fire and halfway sank.

Far from panic, the residents began to gather at the lake to celebrate the “bewm.” Among the first were TotalLunar Eclipse, Tensai Hilra, and Fuzzball Ortega. Fuzzball was setting up a music player for a celebration. They appeared to be floating on the surface of the lake. Perhaps they were gathering where some debris made the water a few inches deep, or maybe it was some force field created by some local mad scientist.

They were soon joined by a huge red dragon, followed by what looked like a female demon. Instead of attacking, they just mingled, the demon dancing to the music. More residents began arriving, in addtion to another firey girl with flames flickering off her body plus some kind of creature resembling a small volcano with airplanes flying around it. and they joined in. No one seemed too upset by the volcano, perhaps trusting that the local scientists had it under control, or perhaps had been looking forward to a show of some kind, “We just love a good ... spectacle, don't we?” someone commented with a grin. A couple nekos were chewing on tiny Chinese firecrackers

And then there were the puns, “What did the flint say to the piece of steel? - ‘You look very striking tonight.’ “ “Let’s strike up a conversation.“ “Did someone make an ‘ash’ out of himself?” “The punsters are on fire tonight.”

As the volcano rumbled on, the lava flows for the moment staying away from the gathering, the residents of Steelhead, human, neko, elven, and otherwise continued to party, taking it in stride.

The Meeroo Mess

Last week, the new top breedable pets to take the Grid by storm, the meeroos, found themselves under assault. First vandals put up phony food supplies up for sale. Then came Linden Lab's response - suspending the account of the person who could make the food!

The Burn Begins

The Burn2 is off to a great start. The dates are October 1 through 9 and although it seems far away it will be here soon. Plots are being sold to builders and they are busy are working on their creations off the playa getting ready for their projects and are excited. I cannot wait to see the artistic visions for Rites of Passage, the theme of Burn2, 2011.

Any resident of Second Life who wishes to can be involved in some way. There are many opportunities for volunteering. Do not feel you may not have enough skill. There is training for you. The commitment of time should not bother you either. You will fit in somewhere for the time you would like to spend. You can visit the tent at Deep Hole to see all the possible groups to join.

As a Ranger, I have already started my training. I am also a Lamplighter so I can join in the lamplighter's parade when I am available. That is great fun! The greeters are wonderful helpers to new arrivals on the playa, assisting with questions about where to go and passing out gifts. The dpw has a lot of cleaning up to do during the burn.

People are also invited to loan or “donate “ a spare sim you may have to allow more space for the Burn2 builds. Your sim will be added to the 5 sims already at the Playa and returned to you at the end of the Burn. If you are not familiar with the Burn which used to be Burning Life in SL, visit the wiki - http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Burning_Life. This is the second year that the Burn is solely run by Second Life residents. The Leads are depending on you to make the Burn! You can visit the kiosks at the tent to sign up or just to get more information.

SL Machinima: "Relay for Death"

"The Angel Of Death seeks equal time under the Fairness Act to promote his Relay For Death in Second Life." By Crap Mariner

"I've been wanting to do one of these, but had to get the right tone to it so it's not insulting to RFL/cancer survivors, but still had the edge. ... It's not easy to come up with humor with some edge that still treats the subject of cancer with respect. I think I was a bit off the mark in places, but if you're not calling for torches and pitchforks, I must have done something right. (smile)."

Over $9,000 Dollars Raised for Beth Odets’ Brain Surgery

Last week, New World Notes reported that Beth Odets, “a longtime Second Life community leader, artist, and musician” was going through surgery to remove a brain tumor. In a couple days, $6,000 US Dollars had been raised. Since then, the money has continued to come in. Daniel Voyager recently posted that the total had passed nine thousand dollars.

Beth Odets, a longtime Second Life community leader, artist, and musician, is undergoing brain surgery to remove a tumor, and her friend Eshi Otawara, a famed fashion designer, has discounted some of her widely-admired designs to help cover the costs of the operation.

Someone commented one reason this fundraising hasn’t gotten more attention is because of Beth’s humility. During the "Jamm for Genes," she asked people to donate to the children’s charity, but spoke nothing about her own troubles.

Further donations can be made on the appropriately named “Beth’s Brain” website, which shows daily totals and a donor list.

Sources: New World Notes, Daniel Voyager’s Blog, Beth's Brain

*Addition* - As of Friday August 12, the combined total of donations raised in Second Life and Paypal was over $15,300 dollars.

Pip's Acid Trip

The psychedelic 60’s can be found at the latest rotating installation on the Syzygy community. “Welcome to Pip’s Acid Trip: An Ode to Olo!” begins at the Community Center on Syzygy Eos (15, 10, 76). Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks created the installation and named it in honor of resident Olorin Tigerpaw.

The build consists of three levels, all wildly reminiscent of that groovy era of peace and love. The first level is easily reached from a teleporter in the Community Center. You will be transported into a meadow of happy, smiling flowers. Explore this magical, vegetative matter until you fall into the secret passage that leads to the second level, a psychedelic sphere of color and grooviness.

As you explore this sphere, you will fall into the third level, which was the site a wild party on July 23. Frequency Picnic served as DJ, and over a dozen residents and friends of the Syzygy community danced and told tales of that bygone time. Dance cages, fantastic flowers and even an old VW van set the scene.

Some residents claimed to have had first-hand knowledge of those times. Olorin Tigerpaw lived on a hippie commune for a while.
The best event was recounted by Crescent Renard, who told about seeing Jimi Hendrix play at UCLA. She and her friends were right up by the stage. “He was ... taking joints from, or giving them to, the audience,” she remembered, “and he was playing like crazy ... guitar behind his back, everywhere.” Other residents were suspiciously silent about any memories they might have made. But for the duration of the party, at least, everyone was a flower child.

This resident installation is temporary, so visit it soon. The music has ended, but the colors and lights are fantastic. Enjoy the trip!

Mt. St. Helens to Blow this Friday, Says Steelhead Scientist

Following a town meeting at Steelhead (more on that later), I met with a few of the locals, human and otherwise. One of the elvenfolk, a TotalLunar Eclipse, told me his partner Tensai Hilra planned to do a controlled explosion at the nearby Mt. St. Helens, in order to prevent or postpone a much larger eruption predicted at a later date. However, he suggested there might be alterior motivations, "I think people just want a boom."

Tensai, who was nearby, seemed to grin manically, "Yesss... something must blow up." TotalLunar commented, "It is called the 'smoking mountain' for a reason." A Rockandroll Michigan who was nearby suggested that "bewm" was a "state hobby" of the area.

Checking St. Helens for myself, it was calm and peaceful for the time being. Birds were chirping. Horses happily grazed in a nearby pen. There was no hint of what was to come later.

The controlled explosion/eruption is scheduled for this Friday at 7PM, at Steelhead St Helens. The scientists (or madboys and madgirls, depending on who you ask) assure nothing will go wrong.

They mean it, really, stop laughing.

Club Zero Gravity is Saved

After the announcements Sunday and Monday about Club Zero Gravity's closing, people talked. Although folks understood the club was closing due to events beyond Nydia's control, a number expressed their desire that it continue.

Certain others made inquires and offers, both to Nydia and to others. Finally, Zero Gravity was able to make the following news:

Club Zero Gravity is Back.

Good News everyone. After some discussion and offers of help, it looks like there's enough funds to cover Club Zero Gravity. So the "party beyond the stars" continues.

Special thanks to Daaneth McGettigan (Daaneth Kivioq) and Timber Wolfenhaut.

For fans of Little Dove whom were looking forward to it opening, it will be getting occasional events, a schedule currently being worked on.

And so, the party beyond the stars goes on.

Club Zero Gravity is at the Purrfection Estates (229, 11, 2265). Events are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6PM SL time. Saturdays at 4PM are beach parties at the "Happy Vixen" on the surface (TP near the LM).

Club Zero Gravity to Close

Yesterday on Sunday August 7th, Nydia Tungsten informed Second Life Newser that the space club Club Zero Gravity would be closing it's doors to regular events "until further notice." She cited real life events beyond her control as the reason for the decision. Club Little Dove, which is in the Southern Colorado sim, will be taking over its events for now, it's events being sponsored by sim owner Daaneth Kivioq.

Due to some financial setbacks, I will have to close the club for awhile until I know more of what will be happening. Thank you for the great times and I am looking forward to more great times as soon as I know I am more stable.

In recent weeks, Nydia has been organizing a "Club Alliance," which has attracted a number of clubs, such as Perri Prinz's Green Meadows Ballroom (aka Perri's Xanadu) which joined yesterday.

Avination Celebrates One Year Aniversary

From Thursday to today Saturday, the Avination Grid has been having it’s first official Anniversary celebrations. Conducted mostly in a sim appropriately named Avn1B, there were live concerts to attend, as well as a few freebies to pick up and a few amsements, such as an amusement park ride and a maze sim. There was also a raffle in one building on the northeast, the prize being getting an Avination sim rent-free for a year.

Dropping by on Friday afternoon, a Carah Nitely was singing. While the crowd at 26 residents would be considered great for a typical party in Second Life, it seemed small considering the magnitude of the event. Among the crowd were some of Avination’s “A-Team,” the equivalent of Second Life’s Lindens. Chatting with someone with customer relations, she admitted things were a bit smaller and simpler here, but the A-Team was far better at listening to the residents and dealing with problems.

Avination has had great success as well as challenges in it’s first year. It grew rapidly, then more recently began leveling off. There has also been a debate about Avination having a less strict gambling policy than Linden Labs, some saying it gives the residents more choice, others expressing worry about the gaming halls. It was partially because of their allowing gambling that Paypal and Avination almost parted ways but reconciled. There were also rumors floating around that Avination hired JCool/Fractured Crystal of Team Emerald to work on their viewer. Although the man in question was later booted from Avination for trying to access Second Life again after being banned, there has been no solid evidence to support the rumors.

For Saturday, from 10AM-2PM is the “Avination Networking Event “at the Avn1B region. From 3PM-5PM is the Avn1B Final Party with DJ Volkmar Taurog at Club Wastelands in the City Center region

For more information about the anniversary event, contact Micheleh Center at helen@avination.com.

Interview at Netera's Coffee Lounge

Tomorrow, I'll be at Netera Landar's Coffee Lounge. But instead of in the audience, I'll be the one being interviewed by Netera. Usually she interviews musicians and poets in front of her audience, but this time they'll be hearing some about the business of running an online newspaper.

RedZone’s zFire Xue Gets Four Months in Prison

Michael Prime, or zFire Xue as known to the residents of Second Life, the creator and operator of the infamous RedZone, is on his way to a small cell behind bars.

According to Tateru Nino’s blog, zFire plead guilty “for four counts of violating his probation following a prior conviction for fraud,” and “has been remanded to the custody of the US Marshals and is off for four months in prison.“ When he’s released from the penitentiary, the conditions for his parole include not being allowed to work near computers or being allowed to go on auction websites, social network sites such as Facebook, or virtual worlds, at least not without the permission of his probation officer. The section of terms Tateru Nino posted specifically stated accessing Second Life would be a violation of his terms, unless he got permission from the probation officer.

Tateru also noted that a $500 fine that was part of his sentence had been waived due to “financial incapacity.” The investigators couldn’t find the money he made off RedZone. What happened to it is unknown, but this suggests that perhaps the residents of Second Life may hear of him at least one more time in the future.

For now however, he won’t be in a position to bother the Grid for a while.

Tateru provided details of his prior conviction Here. A “Redzone Victim” responding to her blog post pointed out the “United States of America v. Michael Stefan Prime” case Here. The gotvirtual.net forum also has a lengthy thread on ZFire's sentencing.

Benefit Concert at Sunset Jazz Club for Circe Broom

On Sunday July 31st, there was a Benefit Concert at the Sunset Jazz Club. It was held in behalf of Circe Broom, a resident whom was noted by the staff as being a generous supporter of the arts, whom now was in need herself.

Circe's Circles of Sound produces the BEST live music, poetry and comedy on the venues of this island 7 days a week! Please donate to the venue, and join our group to know when and which venue for these great artists!

The Sunset Club had something of an ancient Egyptian feel to it, at least as if the club was in Egypt. In front of the club was a patch of desert, with oblisks, palm trees, and a tent. On the inside were Egyptian statues and golden collums scripted with hieroglyphs. With these alongside the bar, the lights, and the people in present-day fashion, it was a mix of the old and the new. In the back was a small stage, with moving images of musicians playing. One of the staff told me this was the longest running live music venue in Second Life, playing since 2004. The reason for the benefit, Circe had fallen ill, and paying for the teir was in doubt.

The party began at 4 PM SL time wit Vincent Mericks playing on the stage. At 5 PM, Krissie Snowdrop took the microphone. At 6 PM were “The Hamelins” (RB & Raven). At 7PM was the musical pair called “Soar,” Bright Oh and Charles Somerset. Finally at 8, Gamjo Mokeey was scheduled to sing. The event at tunes was called the “Brent and Lexie Benefit,” refering to Brent Kingsley and Lexie Leitner. There were a few times the music was interupted to announce a particulary large donation. People gave donations large and small.

There were a few examples of funnery. At one point, Bright Oh was talking about, "the rumor that I was orbited for speaking too much and not singing enough." One of the club staff soon shouted, "Start singing already Bright!!!" There was also a point in which one of the tinies dancing at the club was pointed out, "OK who shot the Bunnehs?" And people wondered if there might be some Elmer Fudd character around.

After the fundraiser, I had a few words with Circe's partner Vincent Merricks, “ It was a good night and we made her enough to take some of the pressure off her when it comes to tier.” Asking him what was planned for the future, “Just to keep doing what she's always done and provide the best entertainment she can to the people in SL. Music most of the time, but also poetry aand other arts on Laurel. She loves the arts. A strong supporter of the arts. (smile)”

Once the event was over, a total of 85,000 Lindens were raised, “if Circe was there she would say thank you all for the great night and thank you very very much.”

Glitches in the Grid

If you had problems with Second Life this weekend, you weren't alone.

Chatting with friends, it seems there were an above average number of glitches in the system. They ranged from sims crashing and being briefly offline to attatchments not attatching to HUDs not working, clickable objects not working properly, etc.

Yours truly also had trouble. The sim I was in crashed, and logging back in, the picture shows as far as I got. Eventually, I had to set the viewer to port home. And even then, it took a couple tries.

Checking secondlife.com, the only thing I noticed was server maintenence scheduled for Monday. Later on, I found the following:

[RESOLVED] All network issues have been resolved.

[POSTED 31 JUL 2011, 1:18PM PDT] We are currently experiencing network issues that may cause regions to fail to restart, login and teleport issues, and Landstore issues. We are working to resolve these as soon as possible. Please check this blog for updates.

Hopefully this means things have been cleared up. Then again, most of us know the Grid seldom is truly glitch-free.
