Second Life's Monthy Active Users Up From 600,000 to 620,000

In a recent article in New World Notes, Hamlet AU reported that Brad Oberwager, the head of Linden Lab, stated that the number of monthly active users had gone up from about 600,000 in October to 620,000.

In an October interview Oberwager admitted that Second Life's monthly active users had dropped to 500,000 in 2024.

Oberwager would go on to say they planned on doing things that would encourage more people to use the virtual world more often, such as hiring a Vice President of Engineering

More Ranch Sims On The Map

For those Premium-Plus residents who are looking forward to getting their own Ranch Linden Home, good news. The sims in which these homes are located in are growing in number, and thus the number of homes themselves. A month after we first reported that the homes were open for living in, the original 28 sim area has close to tripped in size, and now extends to the original Houseboat area, connected to it by a single ocean sim. Motown and the Welcomehub sims are a little to the south.

Checking out the channel myself, I noticed someone had left an inner tube rezzer, and for good reason. Flying over the channel was disabled. But trying to 'toob my way over, I ended up crashing.

More on Bellisseria's growth on the map later.

News and Commentary: Logins Slightly Down, Sim Numbers Slightly Up Over 2022

During the Coronaviris/Covid-19 Pandemic, the number of people using Second Life rose. Linden Lab stated in April 2020 that signups had gone up sixty percent since it started. In June 2020, CEO Ebbe Altberg stated the number of active users, those who were logging in at least once a month, had gone up to 900,000, a one-eighth of an increase over the previous year.

Since then, the Lab has been quiet on just how many are coming in and staying in. There has been some speculation that with the Pandemic over, people have been leaving once more. In an article by Daniel Voyager, he stated that the daily peak has gone down slightly, from 55,000 about a year ago to about 48 to 53,000 this month. Checking the Second Life Grid Survey, this was the case.

So it seems some people are leaving, though it appears to be a smaller number than those who joined during the Pandemic. Some who came back are sticking around, at least for now.

Of the number of sims, things looked more encouraging according to Daniel. With the growth of Belisseria, it should be no surprise to most that the total number of sims has continued to go up. He reported the total number at 27,659. This is an increase of over 2000 from two years ago. What will surprise some is that the majority of these, at least from two years ago, were private sims, from 17,024 to 18,370. But it should be noted almost all this increase was in 2021. The number of private sims didn't change much in just 2022, an overall increase of thirty-eight. But the number of Linden-owned sims grew at almost the same number, 378 more in 2021 and 380 more in 2022.

So the number of private sims is still growing, but it appears economic troubles such as inflation causing the prices of everything from food and energy to rise and cut back on the amount of cash available for entertainment is resulting in fewer people getting new ones.

So what do things have in store over the course of 2023? Difficult to say. If inflation drops and the global economy avoids a recession, we may see a few more people logging in and more people getting private sims. But if we end up with 1979-1980 style "stagflation," the news over the next several months may have some sim closings.

Second Life Land Area Rises to 25,555 Sims, Private Sim Sales Stopped Temporarily

When Linden Lab announced last May that they were could no longer guarantee a new sim to everyone who wanted to buy one, it was obvious the amount of private land areas was going up. It was just a question of how much. On January 3, Tyche Shepherd announced just how much it had. The total number of sims had increased from 24,740 to 25,555, an increase of 3.3%. For private sims, the rate of growth was a little short of twice that. They grew in number from 16,105 to 17,024, an increase of 919 or 5.7%.

Checking Tyche's chart, April and May saw huge increases in private sims compared to typical changes, with 176 in the week of April 19, 192 in the week of April 26, a huge growth of 352 on the week of May 3, and 268 on the week of May 17. But this period also saw the greatest drop, a decline of 179 on the week of May 10. These huge numbers were likely why Linden Lab made their announcement saying they couldn't guarantee a new sim for everyone. From the week of November 15 to the week of December 6, there was another period of growth averaging 80 a week. This followed the Lab's announcement that they had more sims available for sale, though still in limited numbers. But in late December, the Lab put further purchases of private sims on hold, at least for now, due to maintenance of it's land store. So the number of sims dropped in the last week.

So what will happen in 2021? Presumably once the bugs are worked out with Linden Lab's move to Amazon Cloud servers and anyone can get a private sim when they want, their numbers will continue to grow. But if glitches cause them to keep new land purchases limited, the increase will be small.

Bellisseria Expansion Continues

On December 27, the Newser reported that the originally planned area for Bellisseria had been completed, plus some additional land to the south. But a look at the map shows the continent is still expanding in size. There was a small island about nine sims in size just under the front of the "boot," plus a twenty-one sim section of land that will still be growing to the north, east, and south. So there will soon be more Linden Homes available for Premium residents.

Stay tuned for further updates.

News in Brief

There has been quite a bit going on lately in Second Life and the Internet. Too much to go in-depth for all of them, and some have been around for a few days. So here's some of the stories, in brief.

Facebook Hacked: Last weekend, Facebook announced fifty million accounts had been exposed and vulnerable by a "security issue" due to a "vulnerability" in the social media app's code. Although Facebook's owner Mark Zuckerberg insisted the problem was fixed, others such as Virginia Senator Mark Warner called for increased regulation to protect the public's privacy and security.

Net Neutrality Lawsuit: The US Federal Government filed suit against California earlier this week over the state's Net Neutrality law. Despite 200 businesses and trade groups asking them not to do so, last December, the FCC voted to scrap Net Neutrality protections. Several states responded by setting up their own net neutrality protections, California's being among the toughest. In the lawsuit, the Justice Department charges California's actions are a violation of the Constitution. In response, one of the people who wrote California's protections charged that the state's law was written in response to the Federal Government abandoning it's obligation to help protect public access to the Internet.

Internet Throttling Has Begun:  Adding fuel to the fire behind the efforts of California and others trying to bring back Net Neutrality protections was a report written about last month that confirmed major Internet Service Providers were already throttling Internet traffic through Youtube, Netflix, and other places. Verizon is already in trouble for throttling the communications equipment used by California firefighters while they were working to stop wildfires.

Leaving Behind One's Avatars In Their Will:  Blogger Ryan Schultz, who writes about Sansar and other virtual worlds, recently announced that he might have cancer. In response, he says he will be putting avatars he made in his will so they can still be used after he dies. While people interested can contact him inworld, he doesn't plan on leaving avatars that took a lot of time, sometimes money, to make to just anyone. (first update) (second update) (third update)

Star Trek RP Worries: A virtual recreation of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation was ordered taken down by lawyers from CBS, prompting worries from New World Notes' Hamlet Au that they might go after Star Trek roleplays in Second Life soon as well, despite an agreement several years ago.

Eurogamer, New World Notes

Second Life Sims Still Growing: In late August, the Newser noted that five of the past seven weeks then had seen an increase in the number of private sims. According to Tyche Shepard in Sept 23, the increases have been continuing "an additional 45 regions since 31st Dec 2017 , a 0.3% growth and overall the Total Grid has regrown to the the size it was in April last year." But a week later, he stated five sims had closed, bringing the growth back down to 40 sims and 0.2% .

Gossip/Slam Blog Owners Banned: New World Notes reported a couple weeks ago about the owners of a blog called "SL Secrets." The blog allowed anonymous users to make all kinds of claims about those they didn't like from copybotting to fat-shamming to catfishing to ageplay. From the point of view of content creators, it was a potential cause of lost revenue through charges of ripping off others in which the accuser would be completely unknown. The two co-owners were reported to have been banned by Linden Lab from Second Life citing violations for several sections, including 5.3 which Hamlet Au called "the nuclear option," stating, "We may terminate your Account if we determine in our discretion that such action is necessary or advisable to ... protect the rights or interests of Linden Lab, the Service community or any third party." More recently, the owners have decided to remake their blog to cover territory beyond Second Life, called "Virtual Secrets." The co-owners insist they're doing so to expand their coverage and not because of a lawsuit by Linden Lab to remove the "SL" part of their name.

New Avatar Review Website. Some fans of furry avatars may remember "Second Life Avatar Review Files," or SLARF. It used to have a large database of reviews of furry avatars, but stopped updating in 2015, and is now accessible in the Internet Archive after being taken down from the net. Blau Rascon is now doing a new blog of avatar reviews: The "Second Life Avatar Index." Already, there are several reviews of recent furry and feral avatars.

Private Region Numbers Grows For Second Week In A Row

It's been about two weeks since Linden Lab put into effect their reduction in what they charge for land tiers (for non-grandfathered sims), while raising the fee to buy Linden dollars. While the Lab gave no clear reason for their move beyond "to keep Second Life a vibrant world," it's strongly believed the reason for this move was to stop the overall long slow decline in the number of sims. A recent report by Tyche Shepard, who keeps track of new sims and sim numbers in Second Life showed something promising. Total numbers of private estates show growth for two weeks in a row, 35 the past week and 34 the one before for a total growth of 69 sims.

We are now two weeks into the new pricing regime for Private Estates and this is now the 2nd week of positive growth of the grid
Net Growth stands at 35 regions this week (last week was 34) All this week's net growth was among private Estates .

Overall , taking into account last weeks closure of the 24 Temporary SL15B regions , Net Change in Private Estates since the new prices stands at 94 New or Returned Regions

I've no record of Region type at the moment, and therefore no estimate of overall change in revenue for the Lab, but the initial change in demand doesn't seem enough to increase overall revenue at this stage.

Two weeks is obviously too short a time to declare the slump over, but it does raise hopes that the long slow decline, from over 25,000 in June 2010 to just over 16,000 now, might, just might, be over. We'll need at least another two weeks or so before we can say so.

New Sunweaver Sim: SunWaterOne

Earlier this month, the Sunweaver Estates got itself a new sim. Yesterday, August 17, Rita Mariner announced the arrival of SunWaterOne.

Sunnies:  we have a new Homestead to play on.  SunWaterOne, located east of Sunweaver Bay. South of HV.  It's there, even if it hasn't shown up on map yet.  Mostly water, so perfect for boating and flying.  It is available for rent, with conditions.

East of Sunweaver Bay and south of HV Community, the sim is all water aside from an island with a beach hangout places there for people wanting to relax under the palm trees. The building is the same one used at Sunny Beach for a time a few years ago, and was used for two of Nydia Tungsten's videos, "Margaritaville" and "Wipeout."

Meanwhile, the island in the new sim of Sunweaver Eclipse has been built up a little. Work has been done on Pacific Waters and Sunlight Bay. The Farshore Field Airport is still under construction, and Pacific Waters has a "float-in" theater one can ride their boat over and watch.

New Sunweaver Sim: Sunweaver Eclipse

The Sunweaver Estates are getting a little bigger.

Last night, Rita Mariner informed me that there was a new sim in the Sunweaver area. Called Sunweaver Eclipse, it sits north of HV Community and west of Sunweaver Space. For now, the sim is almost all water, but this will likely change by tomorrow. Eclipse is a homestead sim.

This is just the latest change for the Sunweaver's community's land, several days after the sim swap of Pacific Waters and Sunlight Bay, of which the rebuilding is still going on. And it's not over yet. Rita says if all goes according to plan, she will add another homstead sim to the estate.

It's an exciting time for the Sunweavers.
