Debi Late at the SS Galaxy

Recently the SS Galaxy, a passenger liner in Second Life so massive it takes up three sims, celebrated it's sixth anniversary on the Grid. To celebrate, there were special events. Among them, singer Debi Latte singing live in the ship's ballroom.

The event took place June 8 to an audience of a few dozen, enthusiastic listeners.

Debi Latte attends a number of events in Second Life, including every other Sunday at Mystery.

RelayFor Life Auction at Elf Circle

Busy at the SL10B

Taking a breather after having just moved my desk to the SL10B SL Newser exhibit. The team has been hard at work getting everything in place and are determined to finish by the deadline. Today is the final day of building, and tomorrow the sim will be closed to the exhibitors as the plots are inspected.

One of the staff, Catboy Qunhua,  put her words in this little poem.

Get to work you builders you
Or you’ll be sorry, then you’ll be through
As deadline looms, and anxiety brews
The builders rely on their kung fu
To lay down prims for their debut
Of SL10, to great review

Of mighty mesh and tortured sculpties
And twisted prims stretched to sky, Seize
Of our hearts and imaginations
To utopian worlds of compilation
Layed out in plots and neat locations
Which we laid claim by reservation

SL Newser Party at the Corner

Last weekend had the third and the last of the Second Life Newser Third Anniversary parties. It was held high above the Corner of Revolving Time in Ophelia. A number of friends came by, and a lot of fun was had.

RFL Pool Party at Tiny's Haven

On Saturday at 1PM SL time, there was a pool party at Tiny's Haven for the Relay or Life, where the local tiny avatars invited human and other larger avatars (which they commonly call "biggies") over to cool off and donate a few Lindens for the Relay team "Tiny Steps for a Cure."

DJ Laz spun the tunes for the party, being encouraged by the Relay's popular DJ Madonna. When asked about her latex dress and if it was suggestive, Madonna commented, "I'm not bad, I just dress that way."

 Avariel Falcon was among those there, doing the dogpaddle, or is that the unicorn-paddle?

The party was great fun for all.

"Tiny Steps For a Cure" is one of the top Relay teams in fundraising, as of the writing of this article almost at 400,000 Lindens.

There were other Relay events that weekend. Among them Dusk Griswold DJed at one event in honor of one girl whom had recently lost her fight against cancer, and the team that was started inher behalf.

Interview With Pooky Amsterdam Part Two

She had so much to say, we met again the following day to finish. The First Sims – Natoma

DrFran Babcock continues her "First Sims" series with a visit to Natoma. This place is distinguished by two feaures: the landmarks and old builds, one a remnant of Second Life's alpha grid days, and that unlike many places there was someone always here on the sim when someone stopped by. SL10B: Moving Along

You are headed for a great time at the Second Life Birthday Party celebrating 10 years. This community organized event is really gearing up to open on June 16. Build are popping up everywhere, many with a history theme based on Looking Forward, Looking back. 

 

As an Exhibitor Assistant, I have been able to roam around and peek into many creations. I took a look at the Auditorium where there will be meetings and presentations, and at the four performance and party stages. I ran into David Abbot (Da5id Abbot) walking all the sims. He is getting a hunt ready and wants you all to walk the sims too, so you won’t miss anything. That is why he is doing it himself. That is a long walk! 

 

The Pod is all set to take you either through the eastern sims or the western sims. Take your pick, or ride both. Yavanna Llanfair has done a superb job with the ride. You can go into mouse look and look around at everything as you pass, or jump out at any time to explore a certain area.

 

I am enjoying being on the sims while all the preparations are going on. I feel privileged to be a part of it all.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow.

 Looking for a good lady's hairpiece for a good price? Well, The Waka & Yuki hair store is going out of business. But before the place closes down, they're giving away their goods for free.

There's a wide variety of hairs, with many dozens up for grabs. Xanthe Anne on her blog wrote that the hair was all prim, "not a single mesh in sight." The one complication, the sim was pretty crowded when I dropped by (for some reason, most avs didn't appear on the pictures). The place was packed with avatars at the edge in adjacent sims, waiting to get in.

The store's closing date is unknown.

For those who want a chance at free hair, the store is at TSUKIJI (195, 213, 24)

Minecraft Angels Village: An Ending and a Beginning

Jasmine Dawn Shuftan and friends have done quite a lot in Nydia's Minecraft server. Havenshire has become a larger and more complex place than Angels Village, from which the server gets its name, and its players have done much. But change is coming, and it looks like new pastures, and tunnels, for the Angels.

Theonlyjohnny Resident decided to look for a fun gaming area, and found one in a a combat sim: "Urban Zombie." He found the place worth going back to, and a few features that made it different from other zombie sims on the Grid.

Eye on the Blog: Linden Lab Marks SL10B With Special Edition Bear Avatar

Linden Lab's involvement with SL9B was very little. For SL10B, as expected the Lab is leaving the celebration event to the residents. But this time they have a gift for the residents, and a contest involving the gift, which were announced in the Linden blog entry this week: "Celebrate a Decade of Second Life."

This month marks ten years since Second Life first opened to the public in June of 2003! We’re incredibly proud of Second Life’s success and longevity and we hope that all of you are too - it’s thanks to everyone who has made Second Life part of their lives over the past decade that we’ve reached this major milestone.

After the Valentine's Day blunder, one could be pardoned for thinking the Lab would be offering a paltry or unwanted gift. This time, the Lindens put a little thought, and humor, into their present for the residents. For the first eight birthdays, the Lindens offered a free teddy bear (the SL9B bear was made by Sway Dench). As it turns out, the Lab is offering an SL10B bear this year, but not a teddy bear. They're offering a bear avatar.

The past ten years have seen Bears play an important part of the Second Life experience. To pay homage and celebrate the history of this noble animal, we have created a limited edition SL10B Bear avatar that comes ready to have a good time!

The avatar is no teddy. It's a realistic-looking bear with teeth and claws. So did this ursine end up bombing? On the contrary, it's proven to be a hit with residents. The Marketplace page was offering one positive review after another, "Love the bear!" "Awesome!" "This bear changes accordingly with any shape you put on without glitching out."  "I have looked and bought most bear avatars and I can say this is one of the best I have seen so far, that it's free is great and the clothes are a separate option I like better."

Among those commenting was personality Crap Mariner, whom reacted by creating a Flickr page inviting people to add bear pictures to it, "Looking forward to seeing what fun folks have with it." And so far he's had a good response, with a number of people sending numerous picture of the avatar, often having fun. There were a couple of bears with guns (bear-ing arms?).

While not a complaint, there were a number of residents whom wished a female bear was available. SL reporter DrFran Babcock had a response of sorts by dolling up her bear av.

Besides the bear avatar, Linden Lab it also having a contest based on it.

We’re also kicking off an SL10B Snapshot Contest! Start snapping your celebratory images and get ready to share. Top prize is free use of a homestead for four months, and second and third prizes are free use of a homestead for two months.

The Lindens are offering a few other presents, baseball caps and T-shirts, both regular and mesh. But it's the bear that steals the show.

For the first time in two years, Linden Lab is getting some birthday cheers from the residents as they happily accept their present and aren't "em-bear-essed" to show their praise.

Reader’s Chat at Book Island

At the sim of Book Island there’s a multitude of events for everyone. Olivia Whitsend has her "Fix 'n Flash" event while Jackson Arthur soon after has his office hours. Every Saturday at 11am SL Brokali Resident has his own event Reader’s Chat at ( http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Book%20Island/192/68/26 ).


Brokali’s main topic for reader’s chat is all about books. Books that are read, books that were hated and books that people loved in his own words. Brokali leads the chat over voice chat with his charismatic voice and comments on everyone’s input into the chat.

Lycanthia Brought up a new book she just received in the mail the same day called the New Weird. The chat swung into the topic of comic books where Maggie Thunder (Maggie42) had this to say, "I learned to read reading comic books."

Comic books, I said, could be an art form as I have a few comic books myself. And some comics are graphic novels like Frank Miller’s Dark Knight. I said that the same book is realistic and could happen in the real world. Jackson Arthur said that Batman isn’t a super hero. I said to Jackson may be right, but do you really want to say that to Batman’s face? Brokali didn’t think that would be a smart idea.


Another topic was science fiction and fantasy, how it is a popular genre as an escape from the real world. Jackson Arthur said that fantasy and science fiction are the same coin just two different sides. Either magic or a futuristic device can be used to control someone’s mind for example. It can also be used as social commentary. Piers Anthony is a good example of science fiction and fantasy.

Brokali being a fan of unicorns wanted to see unicorn books in the world. We also talked about the MLP fad and Lisa Frank. I thought for a sec and remember the Last Unicorn was written by Peter S Beagle.

Then it occurred to me that a villain character of mine that I write about in my "tail sale" stories is a unicorn woman. Brokali liked how I reversed the good natured unicorn who helps people into a character who instead wants to kill and hurt others.

Press Release: Virtual Health Adventures

Virtual Ability, Inc. is pleased to announce its participation in Virtual Health Adventures, a major project that will apply amputee-rehabilitation lessons learned from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts to the mainstream amputee population. The project is lead by Nova Southeastern University, College of Health Care Sciences - Occupational Therapy and the College of Computer and Information Science, and funded by a grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.


The three-year Virtual Health Adventures project will use the virtual world of Second Life® to provide evidence-based health information for individuals with upper and lower limb amputation(s), their families, and the clinicians who serve individuals with amputation. In addition, the project will conduct a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of providing this information in a virtual world environment compared with providing it via a traditional CD-ROM.

Nova Southeastern University and its multiple partners on this project will develop the health-related content and conduct the clinical trial. Virtual Ability, Inc., as one of the project subcontractors, will develop the Second Life® virtual environment, and provide virtual world community management services for the duration of the project.

Amputation is a chronic, life-long condition. Acquiring current and evolving prosthetic and health-related information will be an ongoing process throughout the lifespan of the amputee. The objective of the Virtual Health Adventures project research is to provide amputees with evidence-based information to improve their health and quality of life while decreasing the burden of this chronic condition on society.

Commenting on the project, Alice Krueger, President of Virtual Ability, Inc., said, "I am very pleased that Virtual Ability can continue to build on our previous work on community building in virtual worlds. This project will not only promote the use of evidence-based health information to improve the quality of life of amputees learning to use their prosthetics, but will also let us assess the use of virtual worlds for this type of activity."

Three Years of Second Life Newser

It was three years ago when one noted newspaper in Second Life came to an end, and another sprung up to carry on it's mission of reporting on the news across the Grid to the residents. James and Dana had left some pretty big shoes to fill, and it was up to us, Shellie Sands, Grey Lupindo, Gemma Cleanslate, and myself to pick up the pieces and go on. We would be starting small. We had no cash sponsors when starting out, and of the several thousand daily readers of the old SLN, only a few hundred would be reading ours for the first few days.  But we were a team, and we were determined to get the news to the public.

Our first few days soon tested our mettle. We were there to cover two major events in Second Life, the layoff of a third of Linden Lab's staff, and the Emeraldgate mess that marked the end of the first Third-Party viewer and the team behind it and the creation of a new Third Party team that would continue to make the most popular non-Linden viewers. We were there to cover these, and other events in a year, including M Linden stepping down, and Philip temporarily taking over for a few months,  that was a turning point in Second Life's history. And we would go on to cover other major news, such as RedZone, the Relay for Life fundraisers, the copyright owners of Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek putting their foot down, and many more.

But we didn't just report on the big news. Our reporters looked around for interesting places that others would like to see, events that people would like to go to, and interesting people whether well known or not. Reporting on the news big and small.

There have been a few setbacks along the way. A few writers of ours had to stop writing when real life interfered. But we've also picked up some fine talent along the way. Grease Coakes and DrFran Babcock have shown to be fine writers, and new writers have come in and have been proving themselves.

Three years and about 2500 articles, cartoons, press releases, and other postings, after it's formation, the Second Life Newser stands as Second Life's premier newsletter. Readership has climbed to over a thousand readers a day, our Facebook page updates over 500 people on the social network to new stories, and has become a force in Second Life's media.

As Editor, I'd like to thank the team for all their hard work, including those no longer with us who left their mark.

It's a week full of events on the Grid. In London City, there's the Glastonbury Pop Festival. There's Numberology. The Relay For Life Events continue. And there's our regularly scheduled live and DJ music parties, book & poetry readings, discussions, talk shows, races, and church services.

The SL Newser Anniversary Beach Party

On Sunday June 2, the crew of Second Life Newser, and some friends of, held a beach party. The occasion: it was three years ago this week the paper began.

The party was held at Cova's Cova, Covadonga Writer being a longtime friend of the paper.

 Grey Lupindo brought a hula skirt for the occasion.

 And DrFran Babcock got "bunnehfied" for much of the party.

Theonlyjohnny showed up at dark, lighting things up with his "Blue Lantern" power ring.

Jasmine Dawn Shuftan and Alleara Snoodle were among those attending the party. Allie got a bit of talk with her shimmering mesh dress.

The celebrations continue for the week. Tonight at Club Zero Gravity is a late night party held in honor of the Newser. It's held at 6 to 8 PM Purrfection Estates (229, 11, 3365).

Interview With Pooky Amsterdam: Part One

Pooky Amsterdam is one of the major personalities in Second Life media. In the past, her "1st Question" science quiz show was filmed every week on the Grid in front on an audience, and entertained thousands on Treet.tv. Today, she's taken on other projects such as the "Time Travelers" machinimas, and on occasion will give a public talk on the future of the Internet and social media. Recently she got together with the Newser for an interview about her and her virtual career.

List of Authorized Linden Sellers Expanded, Podex Back in Business

Almost a month after Linden Lab sparked a crisis by changing their terms of service to shut down Third-Party Linden exchangers, and over two weeks since an initial five "Linden Resellers" were authorized to do business, the list of companies residents can buy Lindens from has been noticeably extended. It's possible to once again possible to do business with many of those who shut their doors, or in the case of Podex had the doors shut for them despite repeated attempts to negotiate with the Lab. Podex is among the exchangers now back in business as "Authorized Linden Resellers."

"We are very happy to announce that Podex has been given permission to sell Linden dollars as a member of the Authorized Reseller Program" Jacek Shuftan stated on the Podex Website, "All our clients are welcome to buy Linden Dollars again."

Besides getting it's main source of business in Second Life back, the Podex Exchange has also made a deal with the OpenSim world "Virtual Highway." On this world which recently passed the landmark of one thousand registered users, Podex now offers business buying and selling Virtual Highway Dollars (V$) in addition to Visa cards and the "possibility to earn your own profit in our affiliate program."

Not all of the Third-Party Exchangers have been allowed to return to business yet. Some, such as Moneyslex and the Brando Estate's exchange service are still closed. But for the customers of many once-closed exchangers, their bank is back in business.

Madpea Goes Out With a Bang

The MadPea gaming area, known for it's fun games such as "The Lost Treasure of the Incan Warrior," and in the past "Virtual Medical Doctor," has been effectively shut down with all the games closed. But before they did, they threw one big bash, with DJs playing music, and lots of marauding zombies.

Dropping by, the people were whooping it up. Unfortunetly, there were a few zombie party crashers, and they tended to go after those away from keyboard, taking bites until someone finally blew them away with whatever firearm they had. The bash went on Friday and Saturday, with raffles held up to Sunday. Not everyone was partying. Some of the "Peas" were spending one last round on a game, either to hurry up and win before the close, or just have fun.

This isn't the end of Madpea. Kiana Writer promises, "a brand new Madpea bigger and better then ever before" will emerge, with "whole new games with immersion never seen before" on the way.

But still, Madpea chat was full of fans disapointed that their gaming area was closed down, during the party, and afterwards as some players groaned they still hadn't beaten one favorite game.

Dreamcatcher Home Rentals

    This is more than just one sim. Dreamcatcher is a rental company spread across multiple sims. This place has it all, from one room apartments, to full houses. The look and feel of the place is one to remember, and so is the hospitality of the employees.


    Each of the Tower apartments is fully furnished, with a bed, hot tub and couch set. Though they are stacked, which doesn't give a lot of privacy, these rooms are still an amazing find. With the price of 5L per day, or 35L a week, this room makes an amazing home. Yes, you can even add your own personal touch, 10 prims worth of it. You may wish to add more prims, in that case you only need to pay a simple L$2 per prim. Make sure that you're ready for a great time, since the bed offers an adult menu, upon you sitting on it.

    The next room is their $50L Themed rooms. These rooms are much like the Tower apartments, except they add a skybox with 7 themes, and, upon request, offer media and security. These rooms are larger than the apartments, and still offer the same 10 prims, along with the same L$2 per extra prim. These rooms also offer the adult bed menu, and are definitely worth paying a visit to.

    Then there's what I call the double room. In looks almost like the themed rooms, only it has a wall, and doorway to get to the hot tub and the bed. This adds more privacy, and at L$ 125 a week I would say it's a great investment. Plus, 20 prims for you to decorate with is a great reason why these rooms can instantly feel like home to you.

     The Loft skyboxes, much like the themed rooms, offer security and media, upon request, along with the bed, couch set, and hot tub. However, these rooms aren't called loft skyboxes for nothing. The bed is situated on a loft, above the hot tub, which sits in a room, perfect for a restroom. Right outside the door to the "restroom" is a small dining table, with two chair, and a kitchen area. To the side of the "restroom" (which, might I add, sits in the corner) is the living room, with the couch set, and the media system. These rooms do offer the changeable skybox themes, and 20 prims as well. At L$190 a week, these rooms are definitely a sight to see.

    The Manhattan skybox rooms are amazing rooms that offer an upstairs bedroom, and bathroom, as well as a large downstairs. These not only offer the standard couch set, bed, and hot tub, they also offer media and security, upon request of course, a rug and even a fire place. Of course they're not called Manhattan skyboxes for nothing, since you have a night and a day view of Manhattan. These rooms also offer house controls for lighting, and 20 prims for your own personal touches. At L$ 350 a week, these rooms are a great deal, that is unmatched.

    Of course, as I mentioned earlier, they offer houses as well. These houses range from L$ 200 to L$ 599, along with some in 1000's. Each house is fully furnished, the way a house should be, and they're all extremely well designed.

    The sum total of all these choices is not some number. It's the amazing place that Dreamcatcher is. This is not just another place to rent homes. Dreamcatcher is much more than that. It's a place where you can meet new people, and make new friends.

    Now, I know that I have told you a lot about it. However, there are other people who can vouch for how great a place this is. One tenant, Imagine, writes,

"I absolutely love living at Dreamcatcher Home Rentals! Jessa is super sweet and lets me build with in limits. This is the best place I've ever lived in SL and will be here for a really long time."

Then Mariah, another tenant, writes,

"Dreamcatcher is a great place to live.  We have a wonderful skybox with a great price to call home.  All the residents are very friendly and the managment is also friendly and super helpful.  I would recomend Dreamcatcher to anyone old or new if you are looking for a great place to live at an affordable rate.  The homes are beautiful and have everything we need already there."

    These are just two people who have each had a very great time living in a home, rented to them from Dreamcatcher.

    All in all, I would say visiting Dreamcatcher has been one of the best times of my life, and I would definitely recommend y'all check it out.

Last weekend was the Burn2 event "Color Outside of the Lines." For fans of the popular once a year art festival, it was a chance to have some Burn-related fun a little early in the year. And the Newser was there to take a few pictures.

Paradise Gallery RFL Art Auction

 Second Life Newser was contacted about an art gallery auction, where the proceeds go to the Relay For Life. Lily Correia (Illyanna Kirilov) helps run Paradise Gallery, which is raising funds for cancer research.

"My husband and I," Lily told the Newser, "we collected 26 pieces from SL artists as donations. They are all being auctioned at 100% donation to Relay For Life. ... We started having musical entertainment (live performers and DJs) since May 13th. ... We had all the artwork and auction boards up on May 13th, but officially kicked it off May18th ... And we have 4 live performers lined up for the final day of the auction."


How do the auctions go? "With the RFL auction boards, you enter a bid, say $500L. You do NOT have to pay the Lindens up front. (If) someone else clicks the board and enters a higher bid ($50L increments), the person outbid receives notification that they were outbid so they can return and bid again."

The final day for the art auction is Sunday June 2nd.
