SL Enquirer Editor Involved in "Karen" Incident
Note: Comedy article, it didn't really happen.
Lanai Jarrico, the editor of the Second Life Enquirer, can't seem to enjoy a simple coffee in peace these days.
The editor of the publication had supposedly gone into a Starbucks when she was harassed by a "Karen Smithstofferson" who proceeded to accuse her of shoving her and began verbally badgering her, calling her a bad journalist, making a 911 call and complaining to the police she'd been assaulted. Lanai got her coffee and left, but the indignant woman continued to hassle her. Finally the editor whacked her with a rolled up newspaper (presumably hers), fed up with her personal space getting constantly invaded. The verbal assaulter fell onto the sidewalk, dazed.
Police arrived finding Lanai and a third woman giving first aid to Karen, who then proceeded to accuse the editor of assaulting her with a baseball bat. After talking to other witnesses, the policeman told Karen he was letting Lanai go with a warning, then proceeded to arrest the whacked woman for dialing 911 for a non-emergency. Then Enquirer would report someone at Starbucks would give Lanai a lifetime supply of virtual coffee for doing something about "the rash of Karenism spreading like wildfire across various Starbucks, Walmarts, Costco, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Walgreens, Taco Bells, Hobby Lobby, and numerous Hair and Nails Salons."

Cutlass Hospital Ship
It's been, interesting times, for the Sunweaver community. A few days ago, community leader Rita Mariner came back home from the hospital after a precautionary check in some days earlier due to an infection on her leg. She's been far from the only Sunny in not so sunny times. A week and a half ago, Zorro Wuramunga was checked in the hospital, and a few weeks ago so was Valkyrie Ice. Others such as Penny Shuftan, Snowbuns Lefavre, and Mattie Carlton have also not been feeling well lately.
Shockwave Yareach mused that the way things were going, Club Cutlass would soon need it's own Intensive Care Unit. So when he DJed on Friday the 13th at Cutlass, the club sported the red cross symbol on the sides, there was a heart monitor near the DJ booth, and the dance poles had IV bags. He commented with his luck, he'd be the one in the hospital next. Rita, who was there, had a chuckle over the dark humor. There was no comment from Zorro, who was also there.

The Newser's New Year's Party
About twice a year, the Newser crew takes a short break from covering the news and has a little party for itself and it's fans. So a few days ago, they gathered on top of the office at HV Community for a little music and dance. A number of people showed up, and some pictures were taken.
See the pictures in Events.
Happy Friday The 13th
It's Friday the 13th, the "bad luck day." So watch out for walking under ladders, broken mirrors, and of course black cats.

Memorial Dance by Relay Team River of Live
On Tuesday January 9, the River of Life Relay team held a Memorial Dance for one of their own.
A little bit ago we learned that The River of Life team lost one of it's members, Lil'Brat. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a few years ago and fought as hard as she could right up to the end. She had done a number of RFL interviews talking about her experiences. Those were hard for her but she knew if it would help someone else to get through the hard times she was up for doing it. She will be greatly missed by many, please send prayers to her family.
Dropping by The River venue in the Stonehaven sim, the place was packed with over forty people. Over the radio stream, numerous people talked about Lil'Brat and how she did her best to fight her cancer.
A little more than 15,000 Lindens was raised that night for the Relay general funds.

2022 Year in Review
2022 saw it's share of triumphs and tragedies, breakthroughs and pitfalls, and other things that stood out. Before closing the door, it's time for a look back at what happened.
In real-life, Europe would see it's bloodiest conflict since the Second World War with the invasion of the Ukraine by Russian dictator Putin's forces. People would protest across the world, and many in Second Life would show their support with demonstrations, fundraisers, flying Ukrainian flags, and the wearing of it's colors. Although there were less flags and people wearing blue and gold over time, moths later some places and people still were. When Britain's Queen Elizabeth passed, a memorial was set up in London City. Dana Vanmoer, the editor of the closed SL Newspaper, would make real-life news when her mailbox "toppers" were mentioned in the Daily Mail website.
Twenty years ago, Second Life was in beta. And this year, the oldest objects on the grid would start to turn twenty. On January 25, the first prim to be created (and remain) turned twenty. On February 11 came the oldest textured object's 20th anniversary. In July was the 20th anniversary of Second Life's oldest existing structure, "The Man."

On February 11 came the oldest textured object's 20th anniversary. In July was the 20th anniversary of Second Life's oldest existing structure, "The Man."
Linden Lab and Second Life would see some developments. There would be two new levels of accounts in addition to Basic and Premium. There was Premium Plus which offered perks such as fewer fees and higher weekly Linden dollar allowances. Later in the year, Premium Plus residents could get a low-capacity homestead sim without getting a full one first. The Lab also stated there would eventually be Linden Home lots in a new 2048 square-meter size just for Premium Plus residents, though they hadn't arrived by year's end. There was also a Plus account option, which basically allowed people to get land for cheaper outside the Linden Home area.
The price of Mainland was lowered. Europeans no longer had to pay VAT tax. Name change fees were changed so one no longer had to get a Premium account to do so. High Capacity sims announced in April, offered to residents in May, the initial high price of $999 and $899 a month after lowered the following month to $499. Linden Lab announced Puppetry feature was being worked on for avatars. It was also announced new starter avatars, NUX avatars, were in development, but six months after the SLB have yet to be released. In January, the 360 snapshot feature available already in the Linden viewer was accessible to more when it became part of the Firestorm Viewer. Not all changes were for the better. Sim rollbacks would no longer be free, but cost $25, each.
The Grid has always seen glitches. But in late January there were so many that on January 31 the Lab felt compelled to issue a statement apologizing for them. Linden Lab would get it's founder Philip Rosedale/Philip Linden back in January as an advisor, and would add a Chief Marketing Officer and Information Security Officer in May. In September, Linden Lab would acquire Caspertech, an inworld company best known for it's rental-fee vendors. In October, a deal was worked out with the makers of the Speedlight text viewer, making it free for those with Premium Plus.
Also in October, a deal was worked out between Tilia and JP Morgan bank, in which it would get a cash investment in exchange for a share of the profits. Tilia had been created by Linden Lab a few years ago, but was now separate though still controlled by it's owners the Waterfield Network.
The Bellisseria continent would continue to grow. In May, a new type of Linden Home, the Asian-themed Sakura, would be released in a new area with a tall, snow-capped mountain in the middle. In April, around the time of it's third anniversary, there would be more of the Newbrooke (suburban style) homes made available. Expansions in August made it possible to not just sail from Bellisseria to the older mainland, but continue traveling up the shore.
A couple feature-length movies made in Second Life would get attention. Draxtor's "Virtual Cultures in Pandemic Times" depicted people going to SL and Animal Crossing as ways to socialize while it was unsafe to do so in real life. In December came "Waarheid," a science-fiction cyberpunk film made entirely in Second Life. Both were featured at the Film Threat theater.
Second Life would see many events over the course of the year. The Lab would host some, including "Hug or Dunk a Linden," two Linden snowball fights, The Music Fest, and of course the Second Life Birthday - the SL19B. The theme for the anniversary event was Steampunk. Bay City would hold some, such as Mole Day, the Bay City Parade, the Bay City Christmas party, and the Prim Drop. There was also the One Billion Rising, the Bellisserian Valentine's Day boat cruise, the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference, Naturecon, New Babbage's Burning Barrel Race, and more. The Relay for Life would host many events, such as the Home and Garden Expo, the Sci-Fi Expo and Con, the Fantasy Faire, the Christmas Expo, the Renniasance Festival, and of course the Relay Weekend, in which over a thousand avatars braved the lag on an "H" shaped track that when through over a few dozen sims. Patch Linden would host a barbecue on the Relay track in the "Days of Relay" a few days before that.
One notable location in Second Life, Tempura Island, closed down after 14 years. But a tribute place quickly emerged, and the Lab would bring the place back under it's preservation program. But other places would not be as fortunate. "The Dirty Grind," a music venue that featured numerous live musicians would close after over a decade. The East River Community sims in Sansara shunk in number after a major landowner left. A few were saved, but some were not. The Mieville Steampunk community faced a crisis when it's founder Perryn Peterson was declared missing and presumed dead. As there was no plan to preserve the sims after his death, the long-term fate of the estates and community remains uncertain.
Sadly, some people would leave Second Life. Live musician Bat Masters would hang up his microphone after many years of singing due to declining health. Siddean Munro, the maker of Slink avatars, would close down and leave the grid on December 31 after content creating for about 15 years. Many would also pass away in real life, Curei of Whole Brain Health, Jimmy Branagh of New Babbage, artist Indea Vaher, DJ Fritter AKA Hakura the Pup who was an SL and radio DJ, JasElm Merte of the Safe Waters Foundation and Insilico & Jinx, Teal Freenote of Raglan Shire, Breezy Carver of New Babbage. musician Paul Nowles, Ktahdn Vesuvino of Mieville, Minirainbow of Raglan, Waya Snowpaw a DJ and veteran who distinguished himself at HFOT benefits, Jenn Chant of the Sunweavers, and others.
Virtual Worlds would get attention in real-life news with Facebook/Meta's "Horizons." While Mark Zuckerburg tried to depicted his virtual world as new and nothing else like it, anyone even remotely familiar with Second Life knew this wasn't true, and he was demanding a far bigger cut from what content creators made, and of course the lack of legs which were lampooned on both late-night TV and Linden Lab's own "April Fool" gag. Horizons would turn out to be a disappointment for Zuckerburg, bringing in few people and little cash, which added to Facebook/Meta's problems as it's net worth went downhill. Social Media would also make the news as billionaire Elon Musk best known for his Telsa electric car bought Twitter. Some conservatives and populists saw this as good news, feeling the platform's censors had been biased against them. But Musk's moves such as demanding that employees work "extremely hardcore" did not go well and was seen as unfair to single mothers. Many advertisers would leave, and Musk would end up losing millions on both Twitter and Telsa.
Outside Second Life, VRChat in July had a security update that disabled mods, much to the anger of many users who over time came to rely on them, and bringing an end to an unspoken agreement between the platform's owners and what came to be an underground mod community. Microsoft would announce it's plans to buy Activision/Blizzard, hoping to complete the deal by the middle of 2023, but it would have to be approved by the US Government's FTC. In the meantime, Blizzard would launch the latest World of Warcraft expansion: Dragonflight, with a new placer race, the Dracthyr.
For the Newser's neighbors, the Sunweaver/Angels community, it was an eventful year. The estates would see new features such as new train stops, the new Club Squeaks, and the Christmas theme park. The Relay season would be an active one, hitting Platinum at the start. Cynthia Farshore would be behind or have a hand in many of it's events such as the weekly Moon Dances, the Renfaire, and the Sunbeamer & Roos Air Show. The Sunbeamers would raise over a million Linden Dollars, making Emerald-Level fundraising and come out number thirteen of 138 Relay teams. For her efforts, Cynthia would be honored with a community trophy. ShinyWhiteDragon, a longtime regular at Club Cutlass, and LilyBethPatterson would be married in July. December had a crisis when Perri Prinz and RECoyote Mindes faced a real-life eviction. But in what was called a Christmas miracle, their friends quickly organized a fundraiser that got them the rent money they needed. There was also some fun and games to be had by the community outside Second Life, notably in the Angels server in Rust with the players seeing what they could build and having a couple races and a base defense competition.
As for the Newser team itself, it was a challenging time with the editor/head writer having to deal with personal tragedy. But the publication continued, and was gifted with a new office by Ranchan Wiedman. As Second Life approaches it's 20th anniversary, we will continue to report the news, large and small, of the people, places, and events across the Grid. Special thanks to our sponsors at Lorena Chung Estates, the Deathlands, and Montecito Bay, our supporters at Farshore Radio and the Sunweaver/Angels community, and of course you the readers.
*Addition* I forgot to include the split in the Burn2 community, with some artists forming their own Burner group, Burn ONe, which would hold a "Renegade Burn" in October and a few other events that year.

Bree Himmel Has Died
There was some sad news late last week in Raglan Shire. Bree Himmel had passed away. She had gone to the hospital in late December and was held after being diagnosed with a blood clot.
At 5:15 pm (Thursday January 5), our friend Bree was reunited with her beloved pug Charlie across the Rainbow Bridge. Her death was completely unnecessary and is a direct result of the spectacular failure .... to value ppl with disabilities by fully funding Home and Community Based Services so they can get support for activities of daily living-of which Bree was in desperate need. Many of our Tiny friends and others have disabilities and for some, like Bree, SL is the most contact they get with the outside world. That’s what makes Raglan Shire and the ppl in it so special-it is a safe and friendly virtual space for ppl with disabilities to make friends and receive desperately needed social support. I know The Shire gave Bree a lot of happiness in an otherwise bleak existence filled with the “benign neglect” that so many ppl with disabilities experience. Over the years, we’ve lost a lot of Tiny friends for whom The Shire has been a Real Life Sanctuary filled with emotional safety and happiness. Perhaps, one day, the RL world will catch up. Until then, thank you Tiny community, all your many kindnesses are never forgotten. Rest Easy Basement 🐈⬛—Lyra Snowpaw, BKOD
Besides at Raglan as one of the "Basement Kitties of Doom," Bree could also be seen at Caledon. In real life, she was Diane Hazel Delaney of Texas.

Veterans Benefit Raises Over 160,000 Lindens
On Wednesday January 4, there was a benefit concert at Veterans Isle. This was the monthly fundraising event for Homes For Our Troops. It was organized in part by Frets Nirvana, with Bri McMahon helping out. The action would take place in a building far above the sim.
We are kicking off our 2023 series of benefits for Homes For Our Troops tonight and we have a great lineup. Right now DJ Zack Friller is kicking off the evening...spinning great tunes. Up next is Chapman Zane providing great Americana down to earth music! Look at the lineup for the evening!
Come on out and help those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
Zack Friller was the opening act at 4PM with his DJing session. He was followed at 5PM by Chapman Zane. At 6PM, it was Quart's turn to hop on stage. Franklee Anatra would sing at 7PM. Last but hardly least was Jesie Janick who closed things off from 8PM to just after 9PM (Midnight EST).
As the musicians performed, the crowd would donate to two house-shaped kiosks on either side of the stage. On occasion, Frets or someone else would challenge the audience to donate a certain amount, then match it. "Let's try this again. As soon as we hit 20,000 I will put in 2000 linden,10% on your money again!" "Hey folks, we only need 1400 to get to 160k right now. That is about $5 in real-life ...mmm ..that would buy what? A giant coke? A Starbucks? Give that up, help a vet and keep your New Year's Resolution to lose weight!!" And the crowd did time and time again, "There is no one more deserving on a good home than a severely injured veteran."
People were also reminded what the charity was about, "In order to apply to the HFOT program, a post-9/11 Veteran must have been injured while in theatre and qualify for the VA Specially Adapted Housing grant. These Veterans typically have loss of one or more limbs, blind, TBI, etc. they must have the letter saying they qualify to apply. Once a Veteran applies to the HFOT program they are brought up to HFOT headquarters for a three day conference to make sure HFOT homes are a good fit for them, and them for our program."
"HFOTS also will never cold call you for money. They are evaluated as one of America’s Top-Rated Veterans and Military Charities, and accredited with the BBB. Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) was started in 2004 by a Massachusetts general contractor who offered to build a Massachusetts Army National Guard Soldier a specially adapted custom home. The Soldier, who had been injured in Iraq, agreed to have him build the home on the condition he do the same for other injured Veterans."
"HFOT is a 4 star charity according to Charity Navigator are considered a top rated Veteran and Military Charity. Nearly 90 cents of every dollar donated to HFOT goes directly towards the building program! This is incredible. The industry standard says if you can find a charity 65 cents or above that is good."
"HFOT builds homes in any state in the country where the Veterans choose to rebuild their lives. They have currently built in 46 states. Veterans will typically choose to settle near family and friends, close to medical services and warmer climates. Prosthetics can easily freeze and the cold weather itself can reap havoc on them. Every Veteran who does receive a home has a Support Specialist assigned to them to keep in touch for many years to make sure they are doing well and have access to any supplemental services they may need."
Eventually, it was the end of the show. "As always amazing Jesie, miss you girl, so much it is amazing hearing you sing again - mwah!" "Thank you so much everyone for your amazing support of Jesie and also Homes For Our Troops. Love each and everyone of you!! Thank you so much Frets for having us and for your amazing support and dedication to Homes for Our Troops you are truly a legend sir!"
The final total raised was 162,943 Linden dollars. Bri would tell me the next event should be on Wednesday February 1.

Join The Newser For A Party
It's been an eventful year of reporting the news in Second Life. And it's time for us to relax a little with a party, and you're all invited.
The event is tomorrow, Saturday January 7, from Noon to 2 PM SL time. For a change, it will be not at a club, but the office building itself. The plan is for two DJs to play some music. From 12 Noon to 1 PM, DJ Snowy will be spinning the tunes. From 1 to 2 PM, DJ Grease will be cranking the melodies.
See you there.

EOTB: Applications Open For Valentine "Shop and Hop"
For those who are already missing the Christmas "Shop and Hop," or looking forward to Valentine's Day, good news. On the Linden Blog yesterday, the Lab announced they were accepting applications for the Valentine Shop and Hop, though just for a few days.
While many of us are still recovering from the winter holidays, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and our shopping itch just won’t go away!
Linden Lab is winding up for a Valentine’s Day inworld shopping event - and we’re now looking for Merchants who would like to participate.
Merchants wanting to take part need to fill out this Google Docs form. Among the guidelines are having to provide at least a twenty percent discount on their items, and at least one free gift that anyone shopping at the store can take whether or not they're in the store group. There can also be nothing political or any adult-rated items (sorry, no adult beds either).
Interested merchants will need to be quick. They have until Monday January 9 to sign up. Applying does not guarantee one will be given a space, and those who are have until Thursday January 26 to Sunday January 29 to set up their stores.
The Valentine Shop and Hop is from Friday February 3 to Sunday February 19.

Flying in Style
I'm not a fan of "supermanning," and have looked for alternatives to just simply flying around and defying gravity. My bat avatars are a favorite, but it's not always Halloween. Fortunately, there's this rocket-powered sled that I picked up at the SL16B. No need to rezz it on the ground, just attach/add, and take off in the air. So at least from my point of view, I'm flying in style.

People of The Year Runner-Up: Supporters of Ukraine
When Russian dictator Vladimir Putin ordered his country's forces to invade the Ukraine on February 23 2022, the result was an international outcry. Thousands across the world protested in various ways.
In Second Life, there were protests against the invasion in the Moscow sim, plus calls to support Ukrainian merchants. People would also start raising or waving Ukrainian flags, and flagmakers would respond by making the blue and gold banners available for free.
There would also be at least one fundraiser to raise money for the country. The fate of one Ukrainian content creator who ended up in occupied territory was also of concern. Linden Lab itself would come to make a statement in support of Ukraine. The Newser office itself would sport a blue and gold flag. And then there were the numerous people wearing blue and gold clothes, or sticking a blue and gold cloth in their belt or some other wearing of the colors of the Ukraine.
Not as many wear or show the blue and gold today. But there are still some places that do, such as one venue yours truly stopped at last week.
There are those who call this support of "Nazism," referring to Russian dictator Putin's claims that the invasion was carried out to "denazify" the country. The sources of their information are Russian news websites that have no choice but to state propaganda to support the invasion or the few in the West who for some reason have come to believe this misinformation. But most in America and Europe aren't buying it.
So the Newser collectively gives "Persons of The Year - Runner-Up" to those who in some way showed their support for the country of Ukraine as it continues to resist Putin's invasion.
Also nominated were Lisa Buttmonkey (Cottonheaded Ninnymuggins) and Ian Witt (Brian Ninnymuggins) of "The Dirty Grid" which recently closed after over a decade, the Relay for Life in Second Life volunteers, and the Moles.

SL Video: "One Last Look at Mario2 Helstein’s M2D Region"
From Erik Mondrian on December 28, 2022, "Renowned for his particle effects and dynamic digital sculptures, Mario2 Helstein [@m2dchannel249] is an extraordinary visual artist who since 2010 has been building 3D art installations and performing virtual light shows [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDKXX...], starting in Second Life and later in Sansar as well [https://www.virtuality.blog/m2d-proje...]. He has also sold many of his creations through his M2D brand (Mario2 Design).
"Sadly, Mario recently announced his retirement, closing his SL store and saying that he would no longer be producing new work or performing (at least not for now). On December 11, 2022, as part of his M2D Light Week event (a “Light & Sound Experience”), he gave the last of several very well-attended farewell shows [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv5CN...], which were beautifully captured by @AkikoKinoshi.
"The flythrough video here is one that I shot at the M2D region on December 23, the day before everything was erased. My deepest appreciation to Mario for re-opening the region for me so that I could make this video—and I wish him the best in wherever life takes him next!"

Creator of Slink Avatar Announces Closing of Stores
In what can only be described as a surprise move, the creator of the Slink avatar, Siddean Munro, announced on Saturday December 31, 2022, she was closing her stores, taking her avatar and other products off the market.
Following two stressful years of pandemic which I am sure we have all been affected by in one way or the other, I suddenly lost my mother in September of 2021, my grandmother in January of 2022 and my cat Cleo in June. I have been unwell and enduring a lot of chronic pain. I have to be very honest, my spark has dimmed a little and I no longer have the energy to pour into this business like I once did.
I’ve done a lot of soul searching over the last 18 months and have come to the very difficult decision that for my own physical and mental wellbeing, I need to move on from Second Life. I am starting something new, and can only hope it will be half as much fun and as fulfilling as my time in Second Life has been.
She would thank her customers for years of loyal business, "I cannot express what your support has truly meant to me, and I know these words will never be enough...."as well as other content creators who made products for her avatar, "you made what I do so much better! Thank you so much for your fabulous,
innovative and gorgeous creations that made mine look so awesome." She announced she would no longer be answering messages made to her or her alts.
Siddean had been creating items for sale since 2007. Her avatar shape has been around for some years, and has been described as "The Tesla for mesh bodies," applauded for it's low-lag design, which contrasted with some popular but complex and lag-inducing avatar shapes that multiplied two to three dozen times could make attending an event unreachable for those with older computers.
On the official forums, there was praise for her on a thread about her closing. "I was very surprised (and a little sad - Slink is still my favorite and
most worn body), but it sounds like a change will be good for her, and I
wish her the best in her new endeavors." ''I wish Siddean and her team all the best for the future. Slink has been an innovator in SL and Siddean is just a lovely person." "I'm wishing the creator all the goodness, it seems they need a whole lot
of happy thoughts from all of us. They were one of the amazing trend
setters in SL back in the day and I'm sure their contribution will
always be remembered!" "My heart goes out to Siddean, if I'd been in her shoes with all that RL
threw at her the last few years, I'd probably do the same
soul-searching. I hope she finds a new venture beyond Second Life where
she can put her talents to good use and get that spark back." "It seems they had an awful year, and I am not surprised to hear they are
stepping away. Lets hope one day they come back with an amazing
creation that knocks us all off our feet
" "So sad to hear this, Siddean was one of the pioneers of mesh bodies in
SL, I don't think we'd be where we are now without her. I wish her all
the best for the future." "Sad news ...15 years of visible accomplishments and a very nice goodbye with hope for the future. Rare in SL for creators it seems."
The other products around for Slink avatars will likely be around for around for a while. But with the avatar no longer for sale and the creator gone from Second Life, it is unclear if any more will be made.

New Version of Radegast Viewer Available
It was announced in the Blind Users Support Group (and Virtual Ability) yesterday that there was a new version of the Radegast Viewer, version 2.40, available for download and use.
I am proud to release Radegast 2.40 the first major update in quite some
time. Containing up-to-date LibreMetaverse, the HTTP client has been
fundamentally rewritten for speed and better resource management. You
may notice things like Inventory and Map Tiles downloading much faster
than they have in the past. Radgast now is built against .NET Framework
4.8, the final version of .NET Framework which is the best I can
do for now to keep Linux and Mac support, such as it is, until a
complete UI rewrite.
It was also announced that the website had been down for a while, partially due to the datacenter being in the Ukraine and not having power for months. But they were back.
Radegast is a text-base viewer that has gotten a following among blind and visually-impared users of Second Life. One can read Mermaid Celine Highwater's article from 2014 about it (here).

SL Newser Archives Yearly Change
It's this time of year the SL Newser Archives section on the front page go through something I don't quite have a word for. Normally people see a list of articles, cartoons, announcements, and other posts for the current month, followed by the previous months with the numbers of post next to them, followed by previous years. So the beginning of January is about as neatly compact as the section gets.
As you can see, Gemma and I, and the other reporters, and those posting reader submissions, have posted a LOT over the years, going close to or over a thousand most years, for a total of 12,169 on New Year's Eve. This year was, rough, so a few less than recent years. Hopefully in this fourteenth year of reporting for us, things will go smoother.

Happy New Year
Yesterday, Saturday December 31, was New Years Eve, and various places across the grid were celebrating, or had thrown a party a day or two before.
Club Cutlass would have it's New Year's party a day before on Friday December 30, with DJ Snowy playing.
Early on Saturday December 31, I would drop by Saffra Nitely's place in Devon Dream, which was ringing in the New Year for Europe.
Furry Fashion would have an event at 6PM SL time, ending two hours later.
Montectio Bay would hold one at Studio 86 at 8PM SL time, ringing in 2023 for the East Coast at halftime.
The Goblin Cave in Caledon Downs would have a small party, but it was still festive. Every hour to Midnight, fireworks would go off as the New Year rang in for a time zone.
Other places would ring in the New Year, such as Xanadu. Bay City was so crowded, I couldn't get an alt in. And someone I knew was sick to the point she didn't feel like partying, so stayed home so she could log on and off at her leisure when her body told her it was time to rest.
Some people looked back at the old year with a little sadness, thinking of the good times they had. Others felt good bye and good riddance, thinking of personal tragedies, inflation, toxic politics, Putin's invasion of the Ukraine that's killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, and more. A few expressed worry, wondering if the years 2020-23 were just the opening act for a bigger disaster. But most expressed hope for the future.
