The First Sims: Stanford

DrFran Babcock's travels across the first sims of Second Life takes her to number four: Stanford. There, she comes across an annoyance she hadn't encountered in the previous three: ban lines. But she also comes across some unique places that exist thanks to the ingenuity of the early builders and features later sims lack.

Read DrFran's article in Places.

SL10B Update: The Sims Arrive

Last week, the sims for the Second Life Birthday arrived on the Grid. "However, they're not open yet." As of now, work is being done to divide them into plots for exhibitors, of which applications are currently being taken.

There's still two months to go until The Birthday, but a lot of work needs to be done before then. Stay tuned for more updates.

Facebook Second Life Page Hits 300,000

Second Life hit a milestone last week. It's official page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/secondlife) hit 300,000 fans, or "likes" as they're called on the highly popular social network page.

Daniel Voyager found some statistics on the page on PageData: "It seems there’s between 700 to 800 new likes/fans every week. The official Second Life Facebook page was created on 23rd April 2009 and reached 100, 000 during late 2010."

Hamlet Au felt Second Life's "active user base" is about 600,000. This would mean about half of Second Life's residents are also on Facebook. This is not a big surprise as about half the United States, and a number of other countries, have Facebook accounts. While many SL users go ahead with Facebook's insistence that they use their real life identities, others (including yours truly) use their avatar's name.

The Bunny Paintball Fight, and other April 13-14 RFL Events

This weekend, the Relay For Life Fantasy Faire begins. But last weekend had it's own examples of Relay fun. There was a jail and bail, a formal dance, and a whimsical painball match in which one team dresses up in bunny suits. It was quite an active time.

SL Video: The Drax Files "Episode 4: Fantasy Faire/RFL"

(Click here if you can't see the video, or to see/leave comments)

For the fourth of his "Drax Files" series, Draxtor Despress interviewed Zander Green, one of the organizers of Fantasy Faire in Second Life. "When you come into this world and realize that how you present yourself is entirely in your hands - you presenting the best idea of yourself: there is a liberation that occurs there..." he told.

Designed as a fundraiser for Relay For Life, the faire offers top digital content of the magical variety, handmade by SL's top designers and merchants. A user-created universe full of ingenuity and passion: that could describe Second Life at any given day, but this long running event is certainly a prime example of how only a virtual world can truly transcend cultural and geographical boundaries. Thousands will come together this week in order to celebrate life, humanity and free expression while at the same time battling the dark forces of a deadly disease in a way that has tangible, measurable REAL WORLD impact!

Fantasy Faire runs through April 28th - more info here: http://fantasyfairesl.wordpress.com/

Ask DrFran: "A Buddy Comes Out"

In recent real-life news, the topic of homosexuality has been making headlines over the issue whether or not the state should recognize gay partners as married. It's not an issue in Second Life as partners could be same-gender from its start. But there can still be problems. DrFran recently got a letter from a resident whom in the past a good friend of his "came out." So what happened, and what did DrFran have to say on the matter?

Eye On The Blog: Linden Lab Calls for Residents to Star in Ads

Want your avatar on webpages across the Internet? That's what Linden Lab is offering for their next ad campaign. They're asking for residents who aren't shy about showing both their real life and Second Life selves to star in their ads.

Banker by day, but intergalactic space cowboy in Second Life? We may be looking for you! We are now casting both humans and their avatars for a new promotional campaign that will be featured on SecondLife.com and across the web. For this campaign, we’re looking for people who are comfortable revealing their “human side” alongside their avatars in Second Life, like in the image above. Specifically, we are looking for those whose avatars do not physically resemble their owners. This promotion aims to spotlight the diverse and creative communities in Second Life, so please apply if you’d like to share your passion for Second Life with the world!

Those residents interested are asked to fill out an application form by a minute before Midnight SL time on May 1st. Among the questions asked are why they're interested in being in the campaign and what they like about Second Life and what they do inworld. Linden Lab says "no personal information provided will be disclosed publicly" unless the person is chosen and agrees to take part in the ads.

To get to the blog entry and application form: (Click Here).

Do You Have a Story?

On occasion, Second Life Newser will print an article or picture submitted to us by one of the readers. And this new year, we're looking for more.

Have you seen a particularly well-detailed sim? Went to a great event? Found yourself in a hilarious "only in SL" predicament? We're very interested in what you the readers have to say. Send us a story or funny picture, and if we like it, we'll post it as a Reader Submitted. For pictures, jpg format is preferred.

PLEASE include your Second Life name, and let us know if you wish it included in the story. Also ask permission before using anyone's name or picture, or use an alias.

Mail submissions to bixylshuftan(at)gmail.com.

Second Life Newser reserves the right to post in the appropriate section and to investigate any names used in submitted stories.

Calas Galadhon Park Sims

In the wintertime, among the places Gemma Cleanslate visited was one called the Park Sims or Calas. This spring, she returned to see what the place had to offer now that the snow thawed. The area's New England charm was still there with plenty of relaxing country fields. But the region also offered water activities and more.

A Celebration of Life in Memory of the Fallen

On Monday April 15th, Boston's famous marathon was the scene of a massacre when two bombs went off, killing three and hurt well over a hundred. Some were so badly injured, they had to have a limb or two amputated. It was the worst act of terror in the United States since Sept 11th 2001.

As this was the day Americans are due to pay income taxes, Club Zero Gravity was scheduled to hold a "Working Stiffs" event the following night. But with this event with two young adults and a child killed and many with lifelong injuries, Nydia wanted to change the theme to "a celebration of life and love." So the party was changed to a memorial event with a Best in White dress theme.

DJ Megatherion was the DJ for the space station club that night, with a number of people showing up, including Club Cutlass' Jenni Greenfield.

Following the memorial event was a more cheerful beach party down below at Happy Vixen Club, with Nydia herself taking charge of the DJ booth with a large selection of lighthearted tunes. Among the guests was Alleara Snoodle, whom has been noted for a number of builds and her work at the Chilbo Community.

As Nydia called it, a celebration of life and love.

Virtual Cash Makes Real-Life News with Bitcoin Crash

By Bixyl Shuftan

Last month, the US Department of the Treasury issued "guidelines" aimed at virtual currencies. While the Linden dollar will be affected by the Government's interest, another virtual currency with a larger distribution and volume was also targeted: the bitcoin.

Wikipedia defines the Bitcoin, abbreviated to BTC sometimes, as "an online commodity that is based on an open-source, peer-to-peer encryption protocol … creation and transfer is accomplished on an Internet-based network and is not managed by any central authority." Bitcoins are created through "miners" that automatically add new amounts by "adding codes to a decentralized log, which is updated and archived periodically." They're transferred electronically, either via computer, or through handheld devices like smartphones.

Computer geeks are sometimes drawn to it due to it's online nature. But as banks are not necessary in the exchange, and it is not created by governments, some people are attracted to it due to the lack of involvement by larger institutions. It's also gotten some skeptics because of the lack of involvement by larger institutions, and concerns that drug traffickers and other criminals use it as an easy way to sell illegal goods.

Bitcoin went through what some are calling a "bubble" recently when it's value jumped from about $90 in late March to a high of $260 on the morning of Wednesday April 10th. Then the value crashed, plummeting to around $130 in six hours. It regained some of it's lost value the following day, rising to $160. As of the writing of this article, bitcoincharts.com listed the value as $99.00.

The crash was linked to an unknown bitcoin owner who up and gave away $13,000 in bitcoins via the Reddit social website. But there have been other problems. There have been attempts by hackers to break into computers and make it mine bitcoins for the hijacker. News of this did cause a drop in the value of Bitcoins on April 4, but the price surge continued again. There was also an account hacking in which $12,800 worth of Bitcoin was stolen.

The crash has caused some to feel Bitcoins, or any other unregulated currency, is just too risky. But others are still trading them. Even as all this was going on, people in the US Treasury Department had already taken notice. In March, the Department of Treasury's FinCEN issued it's guidelines, defining Bitcoin as a "de-centralized virtual currency" with "no central repository and no single administrator, and … persons may obtain by their own computing or manufacturing effort." Like Linden Labs, Bitcoin miners in the United States will have to file anti-money laundering reports with the Treasury Department, in addition to registering with them. There is a "blurred definition" however between users of Bitcoin and "administrators." Could a miner be considered just a user as long as the Bitcoins created weren't traded for US dollars or other real-life money?

Already having caught the interest of the US Government, with the news of hacking attacks and the market volatility, bitcoin is highly likely to face additional scrutiny from both American and European authorities. It's laissez-faire days of being free from big business and government may soon be coming to a close.

For information on what a bitcion cost, check this April 14th article at techcrunch.com.

The Drax Files: World Makers "Episode 3: Eshi Otawara"

The third of Draxtor Despres' video series "The Drax Files," in which he interviews Eshi Otwara. An artist in real life, in Second Life she does art as well, in addition to designing dresses, "pushing the envelope" as Drax calls it.

"Second Life is too beautiful a tool for us to only be used for plain simple reality" says artist and painter Eshi Otwara. Having followed this motto for the last 7 years Eshi Otawara has been designing elaborate dresses in the virtual world that defy physical reality. And this classically trained artist from Zagreb, Croatia, has no problems merging virtual life with her physical identity - it is all dedicated to art you can either touch, look at or...well: wear! Whether Eshi is in her studio bringing dark dreams to life in oil, chalk or acrylic or floating high above the virtual clouds in avatar form, linking and texturing prim after prim until another unique piece of clothing emerges - Eshi embraces the expressive possibilities of both "realms" to the fullest.

Eshi's website can be found here: http://www.eshiotawara.com/ . You can also check out the comments on the youtube.

New Podex Location

The Podex Exchange has moved. They recently moved to a new and larger office building. They now can be found in the Coda sim at (45, 218, 61).

Podex Exchange, sometimes called the Podex bank, exchanges Lindens for several world currencies. They are a sponsor of Second Life Newser.

Eye On The Blog: "Clear Pricing" For Land Services And The New Communications Hub

In the Linden blog, there are two recent entries for April. The first deals with services for private regions.

If you have a private region in Second Life, there are several special services you might occasionally need, like region moves and name changes. The charges for these services depends on the number of private regions you have, and to make it easier for all of our customers to understand the fee structure, we now have laid it out in this chart in the Knowledge Base:

The second blog update deals with the new Communications Hub, or Communications Hub User Interface aka CHUI as the Lab calls it. In an update, it was made part of the main viewer. It rearranges some features, as well as adding a few new ones. Among the changes, "Busy" becomes "Do Not Disturb," and the user is notifed of all IMs made once it's turned off. Local chat could be put on the same window of one's list of IMs.

DrFran Babcock reviewed the CHUI while it was being tested on a beta viewer last month (article March 4). While she liked it, she noted the majority of other testers didn't like it as well as the old interface. Checking the official forums, there were several threads on the subject, the longest one Here. Once again, the complaints outnumber those who like it, one person saying they were switching to the Firestorm viewer because of it. Complaints that yours truly has heard of the most are of bugs that interfere with one's Second Life experience, including crashing just after starting, freezes and crashes when IMing someone,  or just more frequent freezes and crashes altogether. Fortunetly, I have the Cool VL viewer to use, which has been starting up faster than the official one.

Sundreamers at New Bastogne

One's a community who's goals are having a fun place to virtually live and have a good party a few times a week. The other's a virtual Second World War battlefield where residents duke it out in virtual tanks, planes, and small arms in team efforts. One might not expect the two to have much in common. But last weekend, they came together for a Relay For Life event. The Sunweaver community's "Sundreamers" RFL team hosted a fundraising event at New Bastogne.

Jacek Shuftan of Podex on the US Treasury's New Guidelines for Virtual Currency

By Bixyl Shuftan

On Friday April 5th, Second Life Newser wrote about the US Department of the Treasury's new guidelines on virtual currency. This move has consequences for Linden Lab as they'll have to spend time, and probably money on extra lawyers, on required paperwork for them. And it's likely this is just the beginning.

Over the weekend, I met up with Jacek Shuftan, the head of the Podex Exchange. He had spoken briefly about the matter at the time the article then was being written, "every coin has two sides, if (Linden dollars) were virtual currency, it would be more trustworthy, and (Second Life) will have more investors." I felt as a Linden reseller, he would have more to say on the matter.

I asked him, "Was there anything else you wanted to say about the US Treasury and Linden Lab?"

"I am still thinking how close it is, and if it (will) happen," Jacek answered, "For now, it is not an obligatory law. For now, it's guidelines. But it does appear there will soon be some regulations. I think that bitcoin is the main point of this, and Lindens is only side effect. But anyway, it can be a pain for us all."

"Anyway, it's too late to stop (the) economical revolution started with virtual currencies. If they ban LS, people will sell objects in SL for, bitcoins, Avination CS, or whatever else. It's only a few lines of coding. Even the real world is full of such 'currencies.' If you go to car wash and get a special metal coin to put into machine, what is it if not currency? You can sell it to other car drivers, exchange it for a glass of beer, or keep it and sell for a higher price when the price of a car wash will go up. Or you can just return it to car wash owner and get cash back. Isn't it currency like Lindens, guaranteed by the car wash owner."

"But nobody cares. and governments look at virtual coins because they are new, and the turnover is higher than a car wash (grin).

I asked, "So even if the Lab calls it's Linden dollars a 'transferable license' and not virtural currency?"

"Its not important what name Linden dollars are called," Jacek answered, "if real-life authorities say it's currency."

"I am afraid it's inevitable, governments can not let citizens have something independent of them."

"So you think it's more about control," I asked, "and not so much a desire for another source to tax?"

"Both," he answered, "It's not a secret that lots of bitcoins are used for illegal operations, and governments want to control it. But taxation is also something tempting for governments. If we go this way, ie if we tax Lindens, what about (virtual) land? It's also a possession. Should we write in a yearly tax statement - 512 sqm parcel by the sea? Ferrari car, 123 prims, bought on Marketplace?"

"I can bet any money that officials do not know what to do with it. So they are just testing now."

I asked, "So they're just seeing what they can do before people complain?"

"I think (to them), it looks like a pimple." Jacek answered, "New activity, like virtual economy, appears. Nobody cares at first, but its growing and growing. You try to ignore it as long as you can, because nobody likes having a pimple at the end of the nose. But finally, it's so big and painful that you must accept it, and we are close to this moment."

I asked, "So that's how you think government sees it, in your opinion?"

"Yes," Jacek answered, "They tried to ignore it as long as they could. And now, its high time to do something. But nobody knows what. So they gave us this paper … And they can always say it's only guidelines if something goes wrong. We observe the same tendency in Europe, and in the USA. So it's a worldwide problem, I think."

" 'There is no such wickedness, or cruelty, which otherwise would not have committed a mild and liberal government, when it runs out of money.' Alexis de Tocqueville, at least through Google translator."

"We will see what the future brings. But people adapt fast. We are very flexible in Second Life."

The interview then ended, and Jacek went about his way.

Jacek Shuftan’s Podex Exchange, sometimes called the Podex bank, exchanges Lindens for several world currencies. Recently they moved to the Coda sim at (45, 218, 61).

Reader Submitted: "Gaming Gods"

Just a Quick word about "Gaming Gods," or known to the rest of us infantile gamers. People play games to enjoy themselves, NOT to prove themselves. The Gaming Gods feel that if you are not up to their level you shouldn't be on "their" sever. I have witnessed this time and time again, and been the victim of it. Well I have news for you "gods," we all have to start somewhere.

The reason I am posting this is I was in a flying game, someone hit me from my same team and he was terrified I was going to go off on him.  My response was "No problem, it happens. Let's get back at them." He was stunned, then he told me that was his last plane for the game, and was stunned again that I said I was sorry to hear that but better luck next time.

So everyone remember, we ALL had to start some where and remember what it was like when we first started, you will find even you will have a better time playing if you remember it

Easter Weekend in Second Life

Last weekend was Easter time, and there were a number of Easter-related activities on the Grid. With the Relay For Life going on, these events were somewhat overshadowed. But they weren't forgotten. And so before the week is out, here's a few scenes of Easter-related happenings in Second Life.

The Drax Files: World Makers "Episode 2: Jo Yardley"

The next in Draxtor Despres' video series, where he interviews Yo Yardley of the 1920s Berlin Project, "Jo Yardley listens to Marlene Dietrich on a hand crank gramophone because she lives in Weimar era Germany and electricity is rather scarce: oh yes, although Frau Yardley lives in Amsterdam, her house is decorated with original furniture and accessories from the 1920ties and German magazines from the Interbellum Period are everywhere.

"But Yardley, who is a historical consultant for film, TV and museums has done much more than opting out of microwaves, cell-phone and TV usage: inside the virtual world of Second Life, Yardley rebuilt a Berlin that is long gone, a Berlin, where ehrenwerte Damen sport cigarette-holders and gallant Herren are seen in three-piece suits rather than blue jeans.

"This digital Berlin is home to the affluent who dance wide eyes shut straight through the roaring Twenties at the Hotel Adlon as well as the orphaned street children, begging for a few Mark to get through the day. 1920s Berlin in Second Life operates 24/7 and is complete with accurate signage, a functioning Zeppelin and a steam-engine Reichsbahn...so: let's take a trip back in time!"

Ask DrFran: Where is the Meaning?

Today, DrFran is back with her help and advice column. In her latest letter, a reader had once been going happily about the Grid. But recently, she's been having some feelings of doubt about what her Second Life has been. So where does she go from here? DrFran has a few suggestions.

Read DrFran's column in People.

A Tarot Reader in Second Life

Most everyone wants to know what the future holds in store for them. For Grease Coakes, he wondered what does the future hold for his fiction writing. Someone whom offered a few predictions was his friend Amehana Ishtari, a tarrot card reader. So how did the reading go?

New Guidelines on Virtual Currency by US Government Mean Complications For Linden Lab

By Bixyl Shuftan

Last month, the US Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued an "interpretive guidance" (pdf link) or guidelines for the regulation of virtual currencies. Alex Kadochnikov of the "Modern Payment Systems" blog had a few things to say about the matter and what it means for Linden Lab. For the average Second Life resident, these guidelines don't directly affect him/her. But for Linden Lab, "FinCEN now considers Linden Dollar as a convertible centralized virtual currency," and it means regulations and paperwork.

To begin with, Linden Lab's terms of service doesn't refer to Linden dollars as virtual currency but each being a "virtual token" or a "limited license" that could be traded, "Linden dollars are not real currency or any type of financial instrument …" But these words haven't meant much to residents who've treated it as money within Second Life, the only risk being if they ever lost their connection to the Grid. As Kadochnikov wrote, "FinCEN goes by the approach 'If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is a duck.' And Linden Dollar sure does 'quack' like one. Linden dollar is a virtual currency because it has value in real currency (a buck will buy you about 270 linden bucks); and people buy good and services with it."

As "an administrator and an exchanger of virtual currency" they were a "Money Service Business" or MSB under US Treasury guidelines. As a result they, "must register with the Treasury Department and make Anti-Money Laundering and periodic reports." This means more expenses for Linden Lab as, "these reports are not little one page chores a trained monkey can do. There is a reason corporate compliance departments are stacked with lawyers and accountants. As you can imagine both of these items cost a lot of money."

Hamlet Au thought that this would mean Linden Lab will have to hire two or three additional lawyers just to deal with this matter, costing them about a half million dollars a year. The only other option it seems would be to abandon the Linden dollar and deal just with real world currencies. While it would save them these bureaucratic headaches, it would be "like turning off a printing press that prints money. And who in their right mind wants to do that?"

Hamlet Au thought there was one additional complication. If the Lab was thinking of selling Second Life, it just became more difficult as any buyer would have to deal with these regulations and expenses. One result of the Treasury Department's new guidelines may be that Linden Lab can pretty much forget about someone buying the virtual world from them.

Second Life Newser did briefly discuss the matter with Jacek Shuftan, the head of it's sponsor Podex Exchange. He expressed suspicion of the US Government's motives, but "every coin has two sides, if (Linden dollars) were virtual currency, it would be more trustworthy, and (Second Life) will have more investors." So perhaps the move has some benefits.

Perri Prinz’s Green Meadows Club

One club that's been around for a few years that was built as a tribute to classic rock is Green Meadows, formerly known as Xanadu. Run by Perri Prinz and RECoyote Mindes, the club has events a few times every week. But as good as the music is, Perri being an expert of the music of the time period, the club is well designed to the point of being a work of art, in addition to a nearby building having a gallery of science-fiction/fantasy art. Recently, Grease Coakes went to Perri and Rec to ask about the club.

Relay For Life "Teams R Us" Country Weekend

Easter Weekend had the first "Teams R Us" event held by the Relay For Life. With a "Country Music Jam" as the main event, the overall theme was a Western one, with the various camps looking like corrals, farms, saloons, and similar builds. There were other events than ran alongside the "Teams R Us," including a DJ competition and one team's first event this year.

The First Sims: Ritch

Today, DrFran Babcock has the second of her series of articles about the first sims in Second Life. Following the visit to first sim of Da Boom, she went to the second: Ritch. To DrFran's surprise, there was little written about this sim beforehand. What she found in this second sim was quite a contrast to the first as well.

Growth in Private Estates, But Total Sim Numbers Still Dropping

Daniel Voyager had a couple things to say about recent statistical data of Second Life. For a change, there was a little good news as far as trends in sim numbers was concerned. Tyche Shepard's data on new private estates saw a small increase, the first one recorded on the Grid in forty weeks. Unfortunetly, the declining numbers of mainland sims made up for this, "Since the start of 2013, the net number of private regions lost  now stands at 510 (2.4% in 13 weeks).

While the growth in private sims is good news, it's unsure wether or not this trend will continue. Daniel Voyager commented, "… it needs changes from Linden Lab to start the recovery again."

Events This Week in Second Life April 2 to April 8

It's the first week of April, and Easter and April Fools Day are behind us. But that doesn't mean an end to the fun. Some Easter Egg hunts and other holiday events are still up. Plus there's the Spring Fling at Tribute City, and later in the week the Madpea Madness Fair. And of course there's our regularly scheduled book and poetry readings, live and DJ music events, races, church services, discussions, and talk shows.

See the list of happenings in Events this Week.

Queen of the Sagitarian Sea Revisited

Almost three years ago when Second Life Newser was first published, one of our first locations covered was the huge passenger liner the SS Galaxy. The ship is so big, it covers three sims. Gemma Cleanslate whom wrote about the ship then recently went back to see how the vessel was doing, and found it still had plenty to offer.

April Fool Part Two

Yesterday's April Fool got quite a bit of chatter on Facebook, and a little inworld. The reporter who pulled the stunt sends his thanks, and promises more in the future.

We weren't exactly alone in pulling one over on Second Life residents. Jessica Lyon and her Firestorm team pulled off one of their own with their "Firestorm Mobile."

Firestorm in an old Atari 2600? At this point, the April Fool would have been obvious, at least to those who hadn't already noticed Jessica's grins and winks.

Outside Second Life, the April Fooleries were too numerous to mention every single one. Iris Ophelia of New World Notes highlighted the one from the "Guild Wars2" MMO supposed 8-bit throwback "Super Adventure Box." Warcraftpets.com did a piece about a supposed World of Warcraft update that would have allowed players to have more than one pet on the screen at once, though at a cost. By the bottom of the page, well, the April Fool was obvious.

Probably the April Fool that took the most effort, and one of the funniest, was that of The "War Thunder" WW2 Aircraft MMO. The folks at Gaijin Entertainment threw their pilots for a loop when not only did they have a news announcement for "My Little Ponies" heavily armed with machine guns, but logging on, you could actually fly the rascals. They were described as hard to turn, and blacked out easily, but were outclassing everything else that day. Perhaps some pilots had the opportunity to do some fun machinimas that day. I imagine the pilots in that game will be talking about the stunt for a while.

Happy April Fools

Wounded Warrior Bennefit Raises Over 200,000 Lindens

Almost lost in the Easter celebrations and Relay For Life fundraising, Frets Nirvana's monthly Wounded Warrior Bennefit continued to do as well as ever. The event took place over four hours with four singers, going from 5 PM to about 9PM SL time (Midnight EST). In a post, he stated that 206,000 Lindens were raised.

The Wounded Warrior Project is a nonprofit group devoted to "honor and empower wounded warriors" of the US Military. The Project's objective is to provide tangible support for the severely wounded and help them on the road to healing, both physically and mentally." Brought into Second Life, for many months the events were held at Patriot Island before they were moved to Veterans Isle last month.

We raised 206k Linden last night at the Wounded Warriors benefit. Thanks to all the great performers Pondman Haalan, TerryLynn Melody and Max Kleene and thanks to all who support ..especially Dahlea Milena! We have also raised a 211k Linden through the USO tour effort that Don Guapo and Checkers Firelight work hard on. So for March we will be sending over $1600 US to the Wounded Warriors project! Thanks to all in Second Life!

And that's no April Fool.

BREAKING NEWS: Disney Buys Second Life

* Update - April Fools *

Late Sunday, March 31st, Linden Lab made a stunning announcement. In a press release, they stated that they had sold controlling ownership of Second Life to the Walt Disney Company. It is believed the negotiations were conducted behind the scenes over several months.

"Linden Lab is pleased to have Second Life in the hands of such a prestigious company," Rod Humble stated, "We were happy to run the virtual world we created a decade ago. But as a maker of shared creative spaces, we need to be able to focus on new products. With Second Life being run by Disney, we can devote more time and effort to applications and platforms for today's market."

Disney has been active with online virtual worlds before. It's Internet division, the Disney Interactive Media Group has produced the "Virtual Magic Kingdom" and "The World of Cars Online." Both efforts were considered less than successful and were closed down.

There has been no official statement from Disney, although former president of Disney Online Jake Winebaum, who was involved in the negotiations, wrote on his blog that Disney plans "sweeping changes" to the virtual world, "The company is determined that Second Life and its residents are properly Disneyfied." All sims will be given General/PG status, and all adult content is to be removed from both the land and personal accounts. All human avatars are required to have underwear permanently fixed to them. While nonhuman avatars can still be nude, they must be completely covered in fur, feathers, scales, etc. with no "bits" showing. Adult animations will also banned.

Winebaum stated that there were some concerns about copyright violations. So Disney planned to suspend content creation "temporarily" until a new system could be developed that would ensure "no resident could expose Disney to a lawsuit." Of music and other media broadcasted inworld, "Only those owned by Disney and it's associated companies will be permitted." DJs and theater owners will need a license to continue to play.
