CDS Declares Members of Next Representative Assembly

  

The Confederation of Democratic Simulators, or CDS, is unique among Second Life communities in that it has procedures for choosing it's leaders. Twice every year, there is a call for candidates to run for office. If there are more candidates than offices, then there is an election with voting. This time, the number of candidates matched the available offices.  On Friday May 7, Delia Lake, the Dean the Scientific Council announced the news to the community.

We have a slate of candidates for the CDS 35th Term of Government. Candidates who declared for the 1 Chancellorship and the 5 RA positions are:

Chancellor - Samara (Kyoko) Barzane

Representative Assembly -  Almut Brunswick, Laure Levenque, Rosie Gray, Tailsworth Horsley, and Tor Karlsvalt.

We have the exact number of candidates as we have available government positions. Therefore the CDS will not hold voting for this next term. The candidates will be officially installed in their respective offices on June 1, 2021, the first day of the new term.
Thank you all for declaring and volunteering to serve our community!

The Scientific Council of the CDS would make it official the following day, Saturday May 8. With this, the election becomes a formality as there will be no campaign or further voting. As the announcement states, the new Representative Assembly begins on Tuesday June 1.

Urban agriculture and sustainable food: field trip to a Second Life backyard food garden with Delia Lake

UN Sustainable Development Goal #2 is Zero Hunger, yet worldwide, hunger is increasing.

• Getting fresh food to people with little waste and reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs)
• Food – one of the essentials for life.
• Over 4 B people worldwide and growing live in urban areas.
• 1/3 of food produced worldwide is wasted, with people in affluent countries wasting even more, while almost 1 B people experiencing food insecurity.

Most food is produced far away from where it is eaten and is transported to us. All told, it’s estimated that it takes about 10 kcal of energy for every 1 kcal of food we get.

Can we get fresh food to people with little waste and reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs)? Yes, we could grow a significant portion of our food in or near urban areas where most people eat it, but as Joni Mitchell said it in Big Yellow Taxi (1970). “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone? They paved paradise, put up a parking lot.”

There is a nascent and growing movement toward urban and suburban farming. I have been growing vegetables in real-life urban environments for decades, and in SL since 2008. On this Second Life field trip we’ll explore a few ways that each of us might advance urban farming in our solid lives.

Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "Fire and Rain"

"Fire and Rain"

Saturday February 15

“Oh, I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain,

I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end,

I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,

But I always thought I’d see you again.”

In 2019, too many places on Earth suffered extreme drought and horrible wildfires while other places were deluged by severe rainstorms and floods.  We all hope that none of us ever experiences a fire maelstrom for real, or intense rainstorms that damp them. Yet having at least a touch of a visceral sense of what these would be gives more meaning and understanding to data such as those that Dr. Keith Grant shared with us in his excellent presentation a few weeks ago.

One of the unique qualities of Second Life is that we can construct immersive spaces that provoke a sense of being there, of experiencing. For this purpose we have build a fire burnout. Dramatic experiences inform thinking and conversation. Please join me on Saturday, February 15, don some fire fighting equipment and let’s get started.

Last time we started our journey investigating the nature and practice of science over the years. This time we will celebrate World Space Week (4-10 October 2019) by examining our place in the universe.

In 1957, Kees Boeke wrote an essay entitled “Cosmic View: The Universe in 40 jumps”. In 1977, Charles and Ray Eames produced an award-winning short documentary entitled “Powers of Ten” that investigated the world of the very small (quarks) to the very large (the observable universe). “Cosmic Voyage” in 1996, presented at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum and in IMAX theaters worldwide, completed a similar journey.

In Part II of our continuing sequence to “Explore Science in Second Life!” we will jump ahead another 20 years or so and create our own unique version of this concept using examples in Second Life and other sources. It is appropriate that we will be meeting in the Planetarium building on Science Circle island.

"Whales, Dolphins, Porpoises and Us"

Sunday October 6
7AM to 8AM

A number of years ago, I was boating in Cape Cod Bay (Massachusetts, USA) near Stellwagen Banks and watching for whales. I had been there watching for whales and dolphins other times too. This time was different though. As we waited, a small pod of fin whales passed us by at breakwater speed. Then nothing. Until a young humpback whale surfaced and waved to us. This whale performed a dance of dive and surface for 15 minutes, circling, breaching, submerging. When the whale was done, he or she lay there looking at me as I was looking back, eye to eye, intelligence to intelligence, only meters apart. Who was I? Who was he or she?

For me, the plight of cetaceans is not just ecological and worrisome, it’s poignant and personal as well.

Please join us at The Science Circle on Sunday, October 6 at 7 am SLT to talk about amazing and endangered cetaceans of the world.
