Press Release: Fran Serenade’s Celebration Of Life

A Celebration of the life of Fran Serenade at Savoy Ballroom
in Creations Park on Saturday, May 11, 2019, from 11AM to
9PM, featuring some of Second Life’s very best performers.

On March 3rd, 2019, Creations Park lost its original inspiration,
and Second Life lost its most celebrated senior.  Fran Serenade
passed away at 92 after a lifetime of loving and serving others
in both of the worlds she lived in. Fran was beloved by all who
knew her, including her Linden friends. Her daughter, Barbie
Alchemi, and son, AlmostThere Inventor, built Creations Park in
Second Life to be a wonderworld to stimulate the mind, specifically
for Fran and others with Parkinson’s.   The Draxtor video about
Fran and the medical research into Parkinson’s done at Creations
Park was called one of the most important ever made about
Second Life by Linden Lab’s CEO Ebbe Linden.

A Celebration of Fran’s life will be held at Savoy Ballroom in
Creations Park on Saturday, May 11, 2019, from 11AM to 9PM
SLT.  Some of the very best live singers in Second Life will be
performing in her honor.  Most knew Fran and some had
performed at her 90th birthday party, also at Savoy. All talent will
be performing for tips only, and like all events at Creations Park,
this will benefit Team Fox for Parkinson’s Research.

By June 1, 2019, a memorial honoring Fran and this celebration
will be located in-world at the  Savoy Swing Era Museum, and
will be available online at SavoyBallroom.org/fran

Sunbeamers Hit Platinum!

Once again, "The Little Team That Could" has done it. For the fourth year in a row, the team has gone beyond Gold level fundraising to Platinum. After reaching 200,000 Linden dollars a few days ago, there were some sizable donations, including team captain Rita Mariner. And so on late afternoon April 29, the amount raised for this year reached 250,000 Linden dollars.

There were a few little incentives for people to donate. Nydia Tungsten volunteered to be purple for a short time. DJ Geerkil Ziskey and two others on the "Epic Failure" team will be switching to Yinglet avatars for a while. And then there's the matter of a certain fox who offered to switch to a pink avatar, at least for club and smaller Relay events, for a week (everywhere else such as the Fantasy Faire, I can go back to red fox). Like the first two times this "Platinum Avatar Challenge" was done, it's something I've never done before. The big reveal is today at the Happy Vixen club at 4PM.

Return of Last Names "Later in 2019" According to Ebbe Linden

Recently Hamlet Au interviewed Ebbe Altberg / Ebbe Linden. Linden Lab's CEO had a number of things to say (which I hope to write about more in depth later this week). On the issue of last names for accounts, which at a Town Hall meeting the Lindens stated would probably arrive sometime in Spring 2019, Altberg stated a different date.

There are some more back-end changes to SL which need to be made before Last Names can make a return (actually, it's really name changes that are the hard part), but we are working on it and hope to have it ready later in 2019.

So it seems once again, the date for last names has been pushed back, this time possibly to December.

Update on the "Teleport Disconnects"

Earlier this month, Linden Lab came out and admitted what the residents had more or less figured out, Second Life was much buggier than usual, especially when it came to teleporting from sim to sim or crossing sim borders. So has there been improvement since then? Maybe some. Checking "Modem World," Inara Pey stated "There have been mixed reports on the outcome of the deployment made on Thursday, April 18th, 2019, with some indicating matters have improved, others reporting no real change. In particular, people visiting Fantasy Faire and travelling around the new Linden Homes continent appear to be faring a lot better than had been the case."

Simon Linden was quoted as saying at the Simulator User Group, " for server news, many of us are focused on the teleport issues … I hate to promise anything, but we all know a lot more about TP internal problems than we used to (smile) . We do understand they’re annoying and a frustrating problem – we definitely want to fix it and make it better."

Earlier, some residents wondered if the Lab moving data to Cloud servers was the cause of the glitches. Lately, there's been a new suspect, the EEP or Environmental Enhancement Project. Simon did admit that the problems appearing just after the release of EEP was "suspicious" and they were "trying to sort out is if somehow the environmental work caused the TP problems." He didn't think the glitches were related to avatar complecity, though stated "that said, the more complex your AV is, the more work it needs to change regions. It’s always been better to have fewer scripts and data for teleports and region crossings."

On a personal note, I myself seem to be having fewer problems with teleport disconnects, though there are still other glitches such as the viewer freezing for a bit. Some friends of mine are still crashing when teleporting around, so it seems the problem is still around.

A Busy Weekend

Quite a bit happened this weekend in Second Life. Friday was the conference at Virtual Ability. Saturday was the RFL cross-sim race by the Giant Snail Races, and the day the Fairlands Quest opened. Sunday was the fundraising concert at Veterans Isle. It was also the monthly festival in Roma.

We've done a little on the race and the quest. More on Virtual Ability and Veterans Isle later.

Fairelands Quest is Open

After several days of delays, the Fairelands Quest "The Lair of Lantoris" was finally open. Well, at least the first part. The second part is still being worked on. But most of us will still be figuring out the first for a while.

To take part, purchase the quest HUD. There are a number of places you can find it. The place I got mine is Fairelands Junction (110/185/110). You can get "basic" with just the HUD, or "deluxe" and get an outfit as well.

To get the HUD, just select "add" to it, and the contents will appear in your inventory. Besides the main quest HUD, there's another "Magic" HUD, as well as an attachment for your companion. If you got the Deluxe version, you'll also get men's and women's clothes, boxed of course. I went to a place where I could rezz mine, then returned.

Your first task is the find the Bard Queen. She's in plain sight as one makes their way down the main path toward the Midas sim. After you accept her mission, your next part is to find your companion "Planty." Where could he be? Well, as he's a bookworm, maybe the sim where the LitFest is.

So now you have "Planty." You're now ready to begin the next part of the quest: getting the spellbook and the needed ingredients. Happy Adventuring.

Seeing Double?

Taken at the Virtual Ability conference yesterday. Nope, this isn't some fancy computer editing. Erik Mondrian is one of the handful of others who wears the same type of avatar as me, a red Luskwood fox, for their main appearance.

It's about twelve years since I got the avie, but it still has it's fans.

Second Life Destinations: Fantasy Faire Literary Festival

This week's "Second Life Destinations" by Linden Lab is part of the big event going on in Second Life at the moment, the Fantasy Faire Literary Festival. It included a picturesque video.

Did you also know that there’s a big Literary Festival that is part of the faire this year - with story-telling, dramatic performances, workshops, and author meet and greets? Find out more about all the events happening on the Fantasy Faire website.

RFL Team Sunbeamers Hit 200,000 Lindens Raised

Since the joint Sunbeamer/Meli's Maniacs RFL team event at the Happy Vixen last Saturday, donations have been continuing to come in. On Thursday April 25, the team finally reached the 200,000 Linden dollar mark.

We're getting higher and higher. Just 50K more until Platinum.

I've also made a little promise to the team, this year's "Platinum Avatar Challenge." Once again I'll be something that I haven't been before, at least at neighborhood club and smaller Relay events: pink. Everywhere else, back to normal as I still need to see what's going on for the paper. It'll be for one week.

Trader Whiplash of the Relay Rockers has made an offering of his own. If the Subeamers hit one million Linden dollars, the amount needed to get to Emerald level fundraising, he'll stay in a dinky avatar for a week. So hopefully the 'beamers can make him live up to his promise.

Go Relay!

Fantasy Faire: Linden Jail And Bail, Delay of The Quest

Wednesday April 24 was a notable point at the Fantasy Faire with a certain event: the Linden Jail and Bail. Two Lindens, Patch and Madori, and one mole, Ancient, were locked in a circus cage. A few others were nearby either for moral support, to make sure their peers weren't tarred and feathered for recent glitches, or both.

Getting there well after it started, it seemed the three were in some danger of being accosted by tinies, "I poke your tummy!" "Let's all poke his tummy!" "TUMMY BEEP!!!!" Someone defended their actions, "Because he's secretly the PIllsbury Doughboy!" One however did give them something to drink, "It's prison wootberry."

Patch responded by stripping down to his undies, perhaps to distract the crowd. Some found this shocking, "This just jumped from PG to something else." But some just called for more, "Get your blackmail pictures of Patch in SPEEDOES!" "I am putting that in my profile!"

Ancient didn't think too much of the cage, "Smells like sweaty rat in here." At one point, he was chewing on the bars. Mystic Mole cautioned him, "Ancient, that isn't a snack!" Someone shouted, "They made of licorice, Ancient!" Ancient spat, "I hate licorice, you monsters!"

Patch would give out a few of the coveted Linden Home houseboats plus sis months Premium for free for 50,000 donations, "One more houseboat for 6 months, L$50,0000!!!!!" His last giveaway, "A custom named account for L$60,0000. ... It will have to be a new account, created specially for you!!!" It was quickly snapped up by Gwen Enchanted.

Gem Sunkiller would tell me a total of 434,000 Linden dollars were raised at the event.

It's no big secret that in the past several weeks, the Grid's been a little buggier than usual, and tping to the Fairegrounds, or even just sim crossing can be problematic. But the most noticable glitch at this year's Fantasy faire is the delay of the Fairelands Quest which was supposed to start on Monday. Instead, it's been delayed day after day, and finally yesterday on Wednesday people were told the goal was to get it working by Friday April 26.

The fiercest gremlins on the grid. The finest gremlin-smackers in the metaverse. It's a battle to the death -- all to rescue the Quest and restore it to our Faire family!
There's still work to be done, but our heroes with their vorpal swords pledge to win the day. We're aiming at seeing the Quest make a joyful return on Friday.
Never fear, with the extra days we'll have for the Faire this year, you'll have plenty of time to finish, and enjoy the best dragon's hoard of prizes anywhere!

Hopefully the Fairelanders can get the quest going before they have a peasant rebellion on their hands.

Sneak Peak: The Newser SL16B Exhibit

With the Second Life Birthday celebration a couple months away, the talented Silvia Ametza, whom was behind several previous builds for the Newser, has generously offered to donate her time, and prims, into designing and building the SL Newser's SL16B exhibit.

What her build will be? Well, we're not telling you, yet. But we can offer you a sneak peak.

Stay tuned for more.

The Sunbeamer Air Show

About a week and a half ago, Team Sunbeamers of the Relay for Life held it's sixth annual air show at Farshore Field. Organized by Cynthia Farshore, the event had a number of activities and attractions. The Newser was there, and took a number of pictures.

See the pictures in Events.

New Linden Homes Continent Update

For those wanting to scout the new continent

Besides landing planes there, one can also rezz them. But the spot can be identified only by the lack of the "no-rezz" symbol on one's viewer. It's at Coral Waters (109/139/22)

For those whom have been trying to get one of the new Linden Homes, a forum post by Patch Linden stated they were all gone within 48 hours. The good news, he promises additional homes "in the very near future." Presumably, this means the rest of the continent, or at least more of it, will soon be moved into positioned, and the homes placed on it.

Reader Submitted: "Hilarious TP Error"

Teleporting around is a pretty convenient way to get around Second Life, and when getting between places not connected, sometimes the only way. But sometimes, things go wrong. When Henning Lionheart tried going to Fairelands Junction, he ended up inside one of the mirrors.

From the outside, only his head, and the basket he was holding, showed. "This would be an annoying TP error if it hadn't been so hilariously perfect."

Linden Lab's Linux OS Update Suspected in Grid Troubles

It's been almost two weeks since Linden Lab admitted what many residents had suspected for a while, that residents were having more issues on the Grid, notably teleporting between sims or walking between them. However, the Lab may have identified a cause of the trouble. Inara Pey recently wrote that last week on Thursday April 18 at the Content Creation User Group meeting, Vir Linden stated the problem might be an update of theirs on the servers for Linux OS.

"Yeah, we've been having some issues on the simulator side where people tend to get disconnected between teleports, it's been common enough that it shows up as a significant blip in our stats. And that issue seems to have come along, basically when we upgraded our version of Linux that we're using on our simulators. So we've had some rollbacks there, just to try and get that issue to go away.

"That kinda pushes out the timeline for (deploying) all the things based on Jessie, the later version (of Linux) that we're trying to update to. Hopefully we can get those out soon, but I can't tell you anything about the timeline. ..."

So now that the Lab says they might have found the cause of the trouble, will this soon mean not so many issues on the Grid? Time will tell.

Joint RFL Team Event Raises Over 42,000 Lindens

On Saturday April 20, the Relay for Life teams Sunbeamers and Meli's Maniacs held a joint event at the Happy Vixen beach club in Purrfection Estates. For six hours, three DJs, DJ Geerkil, DJ Snowbuns, and DJ Tech, played for the crowd as Lindens were donated into two RFL kiosks, one for each team. The theme was Purple, so every two hours people voted on who had the best purple avatar and/or outfit. A number of other Relayers showed up, including four members of the Roos With a Dream team whom danced away in kangaroo avatars.

At the end of the event, Meli's Maniacs had raised 14,665 Linden dollars, bringing their total to 70,451 Lindens. Team Sunbeamers raised 27,599 Linden dollars, bringing their total this year to 181,500. The event raised a total of 42,254 Linden dollars (about $168 USD).

The Sunbeamers/Meli's Maniacs combined RFL event yesterday was a success. The Sunbeamers raised over 27.000 Lindens, and the Maniacs over 14,000, with a combined total of over 42.000 Linden dollars. Thank you those who helped run the event, and those who donated.

This wasn't the only fundraiser done by Team Sunbeamers recently. Team Captain Rita Mariner's "Bid Me Chipmunk" netted the team about 4000 Linden dollars. The catch was that Rita is stuck in an anthro chipmunk avatar for a week, which has led to a few "Captain Chipmunk" jokes, due to that and the name she uses while gaming online sometimes.

In the meantime, the Relay goes on, with the big event at the moment being the Fantasy Faire. For now rather than have big events, the "'beamers" will enjoy themselves at the Faire and wait for the Lindens to fix the "TP crash" bug before coming up with something new. But later on in May, "The Little Team That Could" will come up with something to get to Platinum Level. It's just a question of what.

Go Relay!

Scenes From The Fantasy Faire

The Fantasy Faire is in full swing. A lot's been going on, but I've had a little time to stop by, and take a few pictures of the sights.

The place has always been a visual treat for yours truly, with lots of scenery.

Sometimes the avatars themselves are an attraction, with new varieties I've never before seen.

There are a number of events to attract people, such as this music party. But there are others, such as discussions, tours, and more. Unfortunately, with all the people around, those with slower machines may need to wait until later in the evening, or arrive earlier in the morning. There's also the "TP disconnect" issue that continues to affect people.

Announcement: RFL Music Marathon at Club Happy Vixen, Tomorrow Noon to 6PM

Team Sunbeamers and Team Meli's Maniacs are getting together for a six-hour music extravaganza with three great DJs. Join us at the recently renovated Happy Vixen Beach club as DJ Geerkil, DJ Snowbuns, and DJ Tech spin their tunage for a great cause. The theme is "Best in Purple," and near the end of each of the three sets we'll have a vote to see who's best in theme.

As this is a charity event, the tip jars for the DJs, hostesses, and dancers will be inactive. All tips go to the Relay for Life in Second Life.

To keep things fair, the winner of the first contest will have to sit out from entering the contest board on the second.

To make things interesting, two of the Sunbeamer team, club owner Nydia Tungsten, and Bixyl Shuftan, have offers for a "Platinum Avatar Challenge." If Team Sunbeamers reaches Platinum fundraising level, 250,000 Linden dollars before the end of the event, Bixyl is offering to go pink for a week (something he *never* does) whenever appearing at club events or Relay events outside of the Fantasy Faire (everywhere else he can go back to normal). Nydia says if Platinum rank is reached, she will go Purple for a week.

The event will be Saturday April 20, from Noon to 6PM SL time.

Strawberry Singh Hired By Linden Lab

Strawberry Singh has made a name for herself as Second Life's most popular fashion blogger. A few days ago on April 12, she had an announcement for her readers. She had gotten a job with Linden Lab. Her position is Marketing Content Specialist.

This is a new chapter in my life which came at a perfect time when I felt like I really needed a change. I am incredibly excited to be working for a company for whose product I have so much love and passion.

Going forward, this blog will no longer promote brands in Second Life as I don’t want there to be a conflict of interest because of my new position. Therefore, I will no longer be sharing style credits or reviews on items inworld. I will, however, continue to use this blog to occasionally do exploration videos of various Second Life destinations, other topics of interest, as well as specific announcements that Linden Lab might want me to make.

As a skilled blogger, video maker, and photographer, there's no doubt she'll be a strong asset to the Linden marketing team. What she comes up with, we'll likely soon see.

CDS Calling For Candidates For Election

Yesterday, the CDS announced it was calling for residents among it's citizenry to run as candidates in it's upcoming elections for their Representative Assembly and office of Chancellor. Those eligible to run were listed in the CDS census a few days ago.

You qualify to stand for office if you are listed on both censuses( April 6th and 13th) and no challenge is received and upheld to bar you from doing so.

If you wish to declare as a candidate, send a notecard, inworld, to the inventory of the Dean, Roguegeek Cooperstone AND to Soro Dagostino, stating  your name and whether you are running for Chancellor or RA . The Dean or Soro will post the names of candidates as they are received.

CDS citizens have until April 30 to declare they're running for office. On May 1, the Dean will announce a list of candidates for both the Assembly and office of Chancellor. The campaign season officially starts May 4. On May 11, the polls open and stay open until May 17.

Reader Submitted: Space Engineers "The Walkyure"

Besides busy modding her outfits, Valkyrie Ice has been busy in the MMO "Space Engineers." Here is a work of hers that took over a year to make: "The Walkyure, an exercise in large scale ship building." But as the game is in early release in beta, it has been subject to change. Among the changes were some that made the ship impossible to finish as planned, at least for now.

Well, at least you can see what I spent over a year building, only to have SE's "PVP balancing" make impossible to finish.

The Ship made to use the Leviathan Engine wings, The Walkyure was supposed to be a massive carrier ship, able to support multiple fighters, manufacture more at will, defend itself against entire fleets of pirates, etc.

Instead, she's an unfinshed hulk that is likely to never be finished until Keen decides to make the game friendly to BUILDERS again, instead of PVP combat junkies.

Oh well. If you have any interest in ART instead of blowing each other up, feel free to load her. It's a world, and will load all mods. It's primarily Shao mods, with a few others for specific items. You can fly through most of her since the game has turned the majority of her into a ghost, and made it impossible to add any more blocks.
