Press Release: Homes For Our Troops Benefit, August 3

Frets Nirvana and US Military Veterans Group announce 2022’s August benefit for Homes For Our Troops in Second Life for August 3, 2022!

Frets Nirvana, longtime supporter and contact for Homes For Our Troops in Second Life in conjunction with the US Military Veterans Group, announces the 2022 August benefit for the Veterans Support Organization Home For Our Troops at Veteran’s Isle .

Frets Nirvana states:  “HFOT is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans are multiple amputees, paraplegic, quadriplegic or suffered severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).  Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent by Homes for Our Troop has gone to directly support Veterans. DURING THAT TIME HFOT HAS BUILT 330 SPECIALLY ADAPTED HOMES NATIONWIDE FOR EXTREMELY INJURED VETERANS.”

In 2021 the community in Second Life sent  over $21,000 to Homes For Our Troops, thanks to many kind hearts and great Second Life performers. That was a 40% increase over 2020’s donations of over $15,000.

15 Veterans and their families received the keys to their forever homes in 2021 and the donations received in Second Life were part of that effort. Currently HFOT has 73 projects underway for extremely wounded veterans.

Home for Our Troops benefit concerts feature premier Second Life talent monthly at Veteran’s Isle. The August 3 concert for 2022 is scheduled from 4-9 pm PST.  Featured artists will be DJ Waya Snowpaw, Mavenn, James Olmos, Greg Ellis Toronto and Hogan Bailey.

Sponsored by Frets Nirvana and the U.S. Military Veteran’s Group of Second Life.  To learn more about Homes for Our Troops visit https://www.hfotusa.org

SL Video: "People Help The People"

By Charlotte Eden on April 26, "This video isn't just another video for me. I really wanted to do an emotional dance video with meaning. With everything happening in Ukraine right now, my heart is filled with so much pain for those effected by the war. We all know someone within SL that's effected and you don't even realize it. I will never even come close to knowing the hurt and tragedy. What I do want to say is I STAND WITH YOU. "

Angels Beach Land Rentals

At the Angels Beach Land Rental Agency, you can find a great new home in Second Life. With many sims to choose from, in the Sunweaver Estates, Hidden Valley, and Purrfection, you can choose from a variety of environments.

We offer places with friendly and interesting neighbors. Some places have a tropical island look, others more temperate. Some of the sims have access to enough water to boat around in. And there are plans later on for an open water sim for even more water activities. The sims are home to a number of quality clubs, such as Cutlass and Zero Gravity and the Bouncing Bunny Beach Club. In one sim alone there are two quality clubs that work together so there is no lag from them. There are also some small shopping areas available.

The sims range from Mature to Adult, but the purpose of the adult rating is for a relaxed atmosphere in which couples can relax. The places do not allow for harassment, and while there are vendors that cater to mature tastes they are discreet about it. Spaces available range from small plots to a full homestead that will rent out for only $30,000L's per month. Most of the sims break the parcels down into 512 Sqm parcels and and most have a sliding rent scale, so the more you rent the cheaper it gets. Our prices are VERY competitive here in Second Life.

And if you bring a friend to an Angels Beach area, you get more than just a good neighbor. Anyone that refers a renter to us and they rent land, they will receive 10% of the first months rent. And if someone you know needs help renting out land on his/her sim, bring them to us. Renters who bring in a sim owner needing administration, we will give 10% of our first check.

To learn more, please contact Nydia Tungsten, Brandi Streusel, Jasmine Dawn (Jasmine Knickers), or Matoazma Kazyanenko.

"We pride ourselves on on not just renting land but renting our customers the land you want. We listen to what you tell us on what you are looking for."

VR Chat Security Update Results in Mass Protests by Playerbase

The Newser hasn't written much about VRChat in a while. This is mostly because we've been busy with reporting on Second Life, but until recently we didn't hear of much other than it's increasing userbase that was making it a true competitor to the older and more established virtual world. But this week there was a major development that's gotten a lot of anger from its users. The developers installed a security update in order to combat the mods of hackers and other malicious users. Trouble is, it also disables the mods players made over time to improve the experience of users, notably disabled users, some saying a number were to address issues the developers were slow to act on.

Total Number of Sims Up By Over 300 This Year

With the amount of work being done on Bellisseria, it should come across as no surprise the number of Linden-owned sims has been growing. In a recent post, Daniel Voyager stated that on January 2, there were a total of 27,231 sims, with 8909 of them Linden owned and 18,326 private. In Tyche Shepard's latest report on her Grid Survey on July 24, there were a total of 27,575 sims, with 9249 of them Linden owned. The number of private sims held steady with a very tiny drop from 18,332 to 18,326. This is an overall increase of 344.

The number of Linden-owned sims will continue to grow as Bellisseria expands. As for private sims, Daniel Voyager speculated there was the potential in real life of rising inflation, recession, or both in the near future. This could lead some landowners to cut back, which would result in a decrease in the number. If not, there was the probability of the total number of sims approaching the 28,000 mark. Second Life hasn't seen a total number of sims of that size in about a decade.

Stay tuned for further details.

Funny Picture of The Day

Gemma Cleanslate found this gem in Bellisseria chat, made by Traci Quandry-Marabana (Traci Quandry). Traci would comment, "The planned takeover of Bellisseria didn't not go as planned." Note that one raccoon on the ironclad shaking its fist in the air.

Burn ONe's Time Extended Another Month

When we wrote about the Burn ONe area in the Highup sim earlier this month, the land had been paid for until the end of July. Last night, it was announced that the time the area will be up was extended for another month.

Wisdom d'Avi (Wisdom Davi) announced the news in the group

The 2022 RFL Sunbeamer Camp

Last month, the high point of the Relay season, the Relay Weekend, took place. Dozens of teams had various campsites there. Among them was that of Team Sunbeamers. Yours truly took a few pictures of the camp while it was up. In this article, they're up to show what the camp looked like. But this wasn't just any Relay year for yours truly, and some commentary has been added at the end.

Sunweaver Rail Stop

With the Relay season over, Team Sunbeamer builders Shockwave Yareach and Cynthia Farshore are free to work on other projects. One was this rail station at Sunweaver Eclipse, on the south end of the large island in the sim. It's part of the community estates rail network.

I had a few words with Cynthia, who stopped by. She told me this wasn't the only stop in the rail system they were working on.

Shockwave and Cynthia are staying busy.

How to Prevent And Deal With Doxing

After some time away to take care of matters, Angel Fencer is back. Sadly, one of the matters she had to deal with was being doxed and harrassed online. In her article today, she talks about her experience with the issue, and what to do about it should it happen to you.

"Wootstock" At Raglan Shire

 *

In the tiny community of Raglan Shire this weekend, it was three days of "Peace, Love, and Waffles" as they held their "Wootstock" festival. This whimsical tribute to the 60s Woodstock festival took place at a skybox over Raglan Shire over three days from Friday July 22 to Sunday July 24.

Various DJs and live musicians would play on stage, some of them local talent. Friday had "Effinjay" (Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe). Saturday had Keebas and the Tiny Maniacs.

Sunday had performers such as Songbird, Maximus, and Quartz.

Gypsy Witch Sands (GypsyW1tch Resident) had a rather trippy-looking performance with particles giving the place a psychedelic look. "What ya put in these waffles?" "~~ WOW MAN!! WINTER WOOTSTOCK IS COOL!!!!! THE COLORZ.. ZOMG LOOK AT THE COLORZZZZ WOWWWWWW ~~"

"~~ OK we've had some words that theres some BAD PANCAKE PUFFS ON A STICK circulating in the crowd! ~~ ~~ PLEASE Stay Away from the Pancake Puffs on a Stick!! you could Get Violently Ill!! ~~"

It was a fun tribute to the 60s.

Mount Campion National Park

Gemma Cleanslate's exploring of nature places took her to a large area, Mount Campion National Park. The place offers hiking, horseback riding, camping, cabin rentals, on what looks like a forested mountain. Even better, the mountain has caverns that can be explored. Gemma took a look around, and had a lot to write about.

"The Man" Statue Turns 20

July 19, 2022 was the anniversary of one of the oldest objects in Second Life and possibly the oldest one more detailed than a single prim: "The Man." People came by the Ivory Tower of Primitives where the statue is located where they danced away to music provided by GoSpeed Racer. This included several Lindens and Moles such as Oatmeal Linden. The Newser was there, and took a number of pictures.

Club Livewire to Close

Some sad news from Club Livewire. Owner Whiskey Ravenhurst (formerly Thorrin Resident) announced that the venue is about to close.

"I'm working way too much the past few months to where i am only logging into Second Life ... to pay tier and then off to work again," Whiskey told the Newser, "So seeing I can not commit to the place, I don't see a reason to keep it going." While it's possible the club may be back in the future, for now he is just too busy in real life.

In the past, Whiskey ran the Urban Furry club until it's closing in January 2021. Several months later, he announced the opening of Club Livewire (sometimes spelled L!vew!re). DJ Squeaks and DJ Snowbuns from the Sunweaver community (the neighbors of the Newser office) would play music there.

The last scheduled events will be on Friday July 29.

The club is located at ZoHa Islands E(89/52/2001)

Moon Landing Anniversary

It was fifty-three years and two days ago, July 20 1969 in which Apollo 11 reached the Moon. The lander "Eagle" would land at 8:17 PM Greenwich time (1:17 PM SL time). It was a triumph of American space exploration, and a high point in human history.

One can see the kind of rocket used in the Lunar missions, a Saturn V rocket, at Spaceport Bravo in the International Space Museum in Second Life. In 2009, someone made a working Saturn V that went into space.

"Dad's Birthday" Sale at Magician Productions

My Dad turns 65 on July 20th. He was born in 1957. He was born on the same day man landed on the moon. And since my whole Aesthetic is space themed, I wish to honor my dad with a sale on all my in-world items. Because if it wasn't him encouraging me to make mods in the first place, I never would have been here on SL as long as I have been.

So here's to you, Dad! Happy Birthday!

And for the rest of you; a special sale for all my in-world products up to 30% off for the remainder of this week! Sale ends Friday~

The "Eggfigy" Burn

Last week, the Newser reported on Burn ONe, an area built as a tribute to the early days of Burning Man that ended up becoming a temporary center of activity of many Burners as Deep Hole was temporarily closed. There have been a number of spontaneous events there, including one the Newser was a witness to, the burning of an egg-shaped effigy, or "Eggfigy" as it came to be called.

Yesterday, July 19, 2022 was the anniversary of one of the oldest objects in Second Life and possibly the oldest one more detailed than a single prim: "The Man."

This statue, created by Oldjohn Linden, was created on July 19 2002, twenty years ago.  This would be almost a year before Second Life was officially open.

People came by the Ivory Tower of Primitives where the statue is located where they danced away to music provided by GoSpeed Racer. This included several Lindens and Moles such as Oatmeal Linden. At one point, someone in a HUGE mega-macro showed up. made

Wedding Bells

 *

Yesterday, Monday June 18, was a happy occasion for the Sunweavers. It was the wedding of ღ Sнίηƴ Wнίϯє ƊƦαɢσɴ ღ (ShinyWhiteDragon Resident), a longtime regular at Club Cutlass, and LilyBethPatterson Resident.

The wedding took place at the Maven Estates, and was well-attended.

Some of Shiny's dracomic friends were there, two taking the groom then bride to the altar.

Afterwards, they headed to the after-wedding party, which was at the Happy Vixen. DJ Khyra (aka the Dazzlecat DJ) and hostess Ana played the tunes to an audience of about forty humans, furs, dragons, and tinies.

Congratulations Shiny and Lily, and may your Second Lives be happy together,

SL Video: Synthesizing Pixels at Escapades Island

(Click here if the video does not play)

From Erik Mondrian on June 28, " Built by the legendary Loki Eliot, Escapades Island is a Second Life destination that is definitely not to be missed (https://secondlife.com/destination/es...), with fun activities and many hidden places to discover—not to mention a full roster of events that are held throughout the year. One of these is the annual Anniversary Weekend, for which Loki designed a go-kart track that encircles the region. After recently filming a flyover of the track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBoyt...) as well as a video of the meadow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xT_T...), I decided to try altering those two clips in my video editor, applying various effects & adding music. This is the end result."

Bay City's SL19B Exhibit In Flames

 *

Bay City's Marianne McCann recently contacted the Newser, pointing out a few photos she took in her "My Second Life" feed. It appears for Bay City, it's time at "The Birthday" had a firey end.

It seems before it was scheduled to be taken down, Bay City's Second Life Nineteenth Birthday exhibit was the scene of a "disaster," going up in flames, "Was this an accident, or sabotage?"

There was something stuck in the flames, "Could this giant gear be a clue?"

Marianne would only add an investigation was ongoing, not sure when the results would be announced.

Post-Season RFL Team Sunbeamer Meeting

On Sunday July 10, some members of the Relay's Team Sunbeamers met up. The purpose was to talk a little about what worked, what didn't, and plans for next season. Some were tied up due to real-life. Team, captain Rita Mariner was happy with the Emerald-level fundraising the team had accomplished once more, "which is not easy for a small team. ... Not only did we do very well in the fund raising dept, we had fun doing it." Rita felt Cynthia Farshore had gone the extra mile for hosting both the Air Show and the Rennisance Faire, in addition to her performance at the Relaystock and her part in building the campsite.

So what happens next year? With the theme being "Hope Floats" that brings to mind both ships and airships. The Air Show and Rennisance Fair will likely be repeated, along with joint events with other teams, such as Roos With A Dream.

This season, the Sunbeamers were 13th out of over a hundred teams.

The Nature Collective

While at the Second Life Birthday, Gemma Cleanslate found out about a place called The Nature Collective. It describes itself as having the goal "to help people engage and reconnect with the wonder and joy of nature." Gemma took a look at the zoo, which is spread out over two sims, and other places such as the playground and campground.
