Yosemite in Spring

Gemma Cleanslate was recently at a favorite region: Yosemite. Owned by Jadin Emerald, the place offers much natural scenery. With winter turned to spring, there's much greenery to be seen. But for those who enjoy winter activities, there's a new skiing area.

Read Gemma's story in Places.

Cartoon of The Day: Gummi Bears

Taken at the Fantasy Faire. Longtime users know that if their viewer complexity has a lower limit, some avatars will look "jellied." I wondered how many people who saw these gummi bear avies were checking theirs.

RFL Sunbeamers "Bid Me" Events

The Sunbeamers Relay for Life team may have gotten Emerald level after passing the one million Linden dollar mark. But that hasn't stopped them from going after more. The team currently has three "Bid Me" events going, inspired by the "Bid Me Bald" fundraisers of the Relay Rockers. All involve kiosks at Club Cutlass in Sunweaver Bay.

The first has Shockwave Yareach as the volunteer, "Bid Shockwave Goat," in which the Sunnies' master builder as well as of parody tunes is putting his looks on the line. For the fundraiser, two kiosks are involved. For every 3000 Linden dollars dropped in the one on the right, rounded down, Shockwave has to spend a week as an anthro goat. 5999 Lindens would mean one week, 6000 L would mean two weeks. There's also a "keep Shockwave Wolf" kiosk on the left for those wanting him to stay as he is.

Cynthia Farshore, the team's other master builder, whose work as won awards, has volunteered for her own "Bid Me" event, "Bid Cynthia Wolf."  For every 3000 Linden dollars dropped in the right kiosk, rounded down, the Sunbeamers' ever hardworking nannygoat becomes a wolfess for a week. 5999 Lindens would mean one week, 6000 L would mean two weeks. There's also a "keep Cynthia Goat" kiosk on the left to keep her hooved and horned.

And last but hardly least, team captain Rita Mariner has also volunteered to put her looks on the line for "Bid Rita Pinkie." For every 3000 Linden dollars dropped in the right kiosk, rounded down, the Sunnies' "killer rabbit" becomes a pink anthro pony for seven days. 5999 Lindens would mean one week, 6000 L would mean two weeks. There's also a "Keep Rita Bunny," kiosk for those wanting to have her avoid becoming a color she is not looking forward to being.

All three fundraisers are going on until Saturday May 17th. Usually the kiosks take donations until just before 8PM SL time when the Cutlass Saturday parties are about to end. But there has been an exception or two.

Once again, the kiosks are accepting bids until May 17.

Go Sunbeamers! Go Relay!

More At The Fantasy Faire

The Fantasy Faire continues, with not just places to explore, but events. On Saturday the 26th, the Masked Ball took place. It took place at the border of two sims, with close to a hundred at the spot.

With avatars of all kinds present.

A good time was had by all, even if not many were masked.

The following day, I came across a sim tour, at Lavendell. It was well attended, with people sharing info about the sim and cracking jokes.

The Fairelands pawlice were there, checking out a beehive.

Did a little more of the Fairelands Quest, "The Dreamcasters Cauldron," talking to a few NPCs.

And caught a nice view of a sunset.

More on the Faire later.

Lab Gives Residents "The Avatar Welcome Pack"

On Thursday April 24, Linden Lab announced they had given all residents a package of items, "The Avatar Welcome Pack."

We are delighted to announce the Avatar Welcome Pack, a starter wardrobe that will give any new resident a strong beginning in the often intricate process of creating an avatar. A number of Second Life creators have generously donated items, some of them crafted exclusively for the pack ...New residents using this pack will have an easier time because of some simplifications. HUDs are a particular challenge for new users, so none of the body parts or clothing require them. All clothing items come with alpha layers, so new users will not need to manually hide body parts. Third, the heads and bodies look great out of the box with no adjustments needed.

It's notable this was announced just one day after Linden Lab stated it was looking for content creators to partner with to make Avatar Welcome Packs. So presumably this is the first of them.

To get the Avatar Welcome Pack, well, if you're a Second Life resident, you already have it. Just check in your Inventory, and look under the "Library" section. Opening the welcome pack, there are four more folders: Female Bodies and Looks, Female Items, Male Bodies and Looks, and Male Items. Each of those for has several packages, They contain various complete mesh avatars, plus clothing and accessories such as wings. There's also a notecard on how to use the contents.

According to Ryan Schultz, the Pack was delivered by accident almost two weeks ago, which allowed those who found out a chance to walk around in the appearances and outfits for a few hours until the Lab took them down again until Tuesday April 22. Ryan would suggest that one reason for the bodies in the Avatar Welcome Package was that the Senra starter avatars introduced by Linden Lab a year and a half ago "were a bit of a failure ... They were a bit odd-looking (particularly the heads), and they stuck out like a sore thumb on the grid," and few content creators bothered making clothes for them, "So Linden Lab went back to the drawing board, and this time around, they reached out to established and well-known Second Life content creators to partner with."

Cartoon Of The Day: Chase Scene

Taken at the Fantasy Faire. Going about the grounds, I saw two women running, the one in back in armor with a mace and shield. It certainly looked like she was chasing her. So why might be? With it being a few days after Easter, I could think of one reason.

The Fairelands Quest Is Up

Good news for Fantasy Faire fans, anyone who likes an interactive story, likes games with big prizes, and especially all three. The Fairelands Quest is finally up and running. This year, the name of the Quest is "The Dreamcaster's Cauldron."

The Bard Queen is perplexed.

All across the Fairelands, there’s been a rash of bad dreams. Not just bad — really bad. Teeth-gritting, terrifying, haunt-you-all-day-long nightmares.

Sleepers are waking in a panic. In some, annoyance turns to fury. Assertiveness turns to aggression. Sadness turns to deep despair. Throughout the lands, violence and misery are spreading in ever-widening circles.

What could possibly be happening?

To get the Quest HUD, it's located in Fairelands Junction and most other central areas of the other Fairelands sims (at FJ, it's at 44,139,87 ). You will see a pair of kiosks labeled "The Dreamcasters Cauldron." For just the HUD, quest companion, and lantern, pay 250L in the smaller kiosk. The larger has those and a number of outfits, one for male and female for normal sized avatars, plus a few for dinkies.

To play, you'll need to attatch both the hud and your companion Pax. The outfit is optional. So is the lantern, though it will help you see in dark places. The first step is to find the Bard Queen, who explains the situation. Then you have to find the dreamers, presumably followed by your companion Paz. After that, well, we'll see.

More on the Quest, and the Fairelands, later.

*Addition* I thought the first thing after talking to the Bard Queen was meeting with your companion. But that wasn't the case this time.

Linden Lab Announces "Creator Partnership Program"

Yesterday on Wednesday April 23 in the official blog, Linden Lab announced the "Second Life Creator Partnership Program." It's described purpose is to get the Lab together with builders "to co-create content and experiences" that will attract the attention of the virtual world's residents.

As part of our broader 2025 efforts to improve the newcomer experience, we’ve already kicked things off with some new amazing community partnerships. Later this week, we’ll reveal more details about our new Avatar Welcome Pack developed in collaboration with several well-known community creators. In addition, we’ve already announced new partnerships this year with acclaimed game and experience creator MadPea and premiere shopping destination Seraphim

Now, we’re looking to expand our community collaborations even further – and we invite creators of all types to help us build and improve the next generation of Second Life new user experiences and beyond. Whether you’re a fashion designer, avatar builder, home goods creator, experience developer, or just someone with a standout idea—we want to hear from you.

Currently, the Lab is interested in help with three things. One is "Welcome Packs," free items for new residents, such as clothing, avatar accessories, and home furnishings. For older residents, the Lab also wants help in making "Community Perks." Thirdly, the Lab is also interested in help in improving their Community Gateways "for even more high-quality, welcoming destinations optimized for new users across both broad and specific communities and themes."

Those interested in taking part in a collaboration are asked to fill out an application (here).  It's also encouraged to sign up to take part in a Zoom call the Lab occasionally hosts.

More On The Aspen Ridge Linden Homes, And News On Legacy Homes

Last week on Tuesday April 15, Linden Lab introduced the latest Linden Home, the Aspen Ridge. This is the third type of Linden Home introduced this year, and available to both Premium and Premium-Plus residents.

What sets these homes apart is that the land they're on can change with the seasons, advertised by the Lab as "our first seasonal home." Going to the demo homes, one could switch between winter and spring. If there's an autumn phase, it wasn't shown.

The houses are wooden walls on a foundation of stone, and are in six varieties: Peakstone, Ridgeway, Highpoint, Summitview, Elkridge, and Crestwood.

These Linden homes are located in a new part of Bellisseria, just east of the Sakura home area in it's north-central area. Originally a five sim area not connected to the Bell mainland, in the past several days it's grown to a 31 sim landmass connected to the rest of Bellisseria by a single mostly water sim.

Going about, already people were decorating those in the areas I saw with furniture and yard decor. It's a safe bet like other Linden Homes, they're a popular hit that will soon be almost all taken up, if they haven't already.

But with the Linden's announcement, there was a warning to those still in the older Linden Homes, also known as legacy Linden Homes. The Lab announced they're starting the closing of the legacy Home sims.

With the release of Aspen Ridge and other recent Linden Homes, we’re entering a new era. As previously announced, we’re beginning the phased retirement of all legacy Linden Homes. If you’re still living in one of those original styles, it’s time to start thinking about your next chapter.

It's unknown how many are still in these older Linen Home regions.

Fantasy Faire Continues

The Fantasy Faire continues. Besides the scenery and the shopping, there are events. During much of the day and early night, there are DJ parties at the Fairchilde in The Golden Hour sim.The deck gets filled with dancers of all kinds of avatars. So these events can be a treat for the eyes as well as the ears.

Friday April 18 from 1 to 3 SL time was the Patch Linden Jail and Bail. There were about 120 avatars present. Many things were auctioned off from a new last name to Premium resident time to ownership of a sim. There was some mock banter from the crowd, "Grab your pool noodles, he's going down!" "You are jailed for life!" But it was all in fun.

I thought I heard at the end 500 Linden dollars were raised in total.

Patch Linen would also say that the Faire would be extended two more days, to Tuesday May 6, and that for those who missed the chance to get Fairelander as a last name last year, there would be another later this season, "Stay tuned for details and an announcement from the Faire."

And of course there's the great scenery to explore.

And then there's the people you'll meet. Besides coming across RacerX Gullwing and Mariane McCann, there was some guy being crazy with a bus, going up and down stairs with it.

Linden Buy Fees Reduced to One Cent Until Friday

Just a few hours ago today, Linden Lab announced they are reducing the fee for purchasing Linden dollars to one US cent in their "One Penny Buy Fees" limited time offer.

Times are tough for a lot of people, so we've come up with one way to make things a little easier: Second Life is launching a special LindeX limited-time offer – a chance to make Linden Dollar (L$) Buy fees nearly disappear for a limited time!

While the global economy wrestles with rising tariffs and tense trade talks, we’re responding with a bold, Resident-first promotion: we're charging just a penny for your LindeX buy fees for the next 2 days. We’re committed to you - our Residents - through these challenging times, and we will continue to stand by you as we have over the past 22 years.

This limited time offer started at 12:30 PM SL time today, Wednesday April 16. It is scheduled to continue for fifty hours to 2:30 PM Sl time Friday April 18, at which time the one cent deal expires, "Compare that to the standard buy fee of 10%, with a minimum of $1.49 and a max of $14.99—this is an unprecedented cut designed to empower Residents, stimulate activity, and boost in-world trade. This is a one-time only opportunity that won’t come around again, so you’ll need to act fast if you want to stock up on Linden Dollars and save."

In theory, someone could buy up to $1999 worth of Linden dollars during the deal. If a Market Rate transaction takes longer than 2:30PM Friday, then the normal rate applies, not the deal.

Linden Lab has never done a one cent sale on it's transaction fees before.

New Linden Home: Aspen Ridge

On Tuesday April 15, Linden Lab announced a new Linden Home: The Aspen Ridge.

A breathtaking new Linden Homes theme has just arrived—and it’s unlike anything before.

Aspen Ridge is now available to Premium Residents. Nestled deep in the mountain highlands of Bellisseria, this forested neighborhood invites you into a tranquil world of tall pines, winding trails, and homes designed to blend naturally into their alpine surroundings. It’s peaceful. It’s immersive. It’s the kind of place where time doesn’t just pass—it flows.

More details tomorrow  as real life is limiting writing time.

Town Hall On AI In Second Life Friday

On Monday, Linden Lab announced there will be a Town Hall Meeting on Friday April 18. The topic is "AI And The Future of Our Virtual Community."

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly present in both our physical and virtual worlds, the Second Life community is coming together for a Special Town Hall event to explore its evolving role and impact within our shared metaverse.

The topics include, "How AI-generated avatars may affect identity and trust in social spaces," "Generative AI and the Second Life creative economy," "Emotional manipulation, consent, and transparency with AI-driven characters," "Use of AI in customer support and other non-in-world services," and "Balancing creative opportunities and responsible use of emerging AI tools"

The event, hosted by Philip Linden, starts at 12:30 PM, and takes place on Town Hall Island, three locations listed being Town Hall Island1 (252/5/26), Town Hall Island2 (6/7/26), and Town Hall Island3 (249/252/26). People are invited to submit questions (here).

AI is a topic that generated controversy in December when the Lab announced, then postponed use of an AI character designer.

EOTB: Madpea's Kiana Writer in Second Life Spotlight

Today in the official Second Life blog, Linden Lab did a Second Life Spotlight article featuring Kiana Writer, the head of Madpea, one of Second Life's most noted gaming areas.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Kiana Writer, the founder of MadPea, whose immersive adventures, compelling storytelling, and innovative spirit have left a lasting mark on Second Life for nearly two decades.

You can read the article here.
