Algorithms at Work: Post-Brexit AI Governance, Cross-Border Workers and the Imagined State
Saturday November 7
10 AM SL time
Aerial Beaumont As AI becomes embedded in how people are recruited, managed and evaluated, the workplace has emerged as a key testing ground for AI governance. Since Brexit, the United Kingdom and the European Union have charted increasingly distinct courses. The EU AI Act designates workplace AI as “high-risk”, although the recent Digital Omnibus has deferred these obligations until December 2027. The UK has instead opted for a principles-led, “pro-innovation” model spread across existing regulators. This lecture suggests that these approaches reflect more than differing legal strategies. They produce competing understandings of what fairness, responsibility and protection at work mean in practice. These questions grow more complex as employment stretches across national boundaries. The lecture explores how cross-border workers come to understand their place in relation to the state when algorithmic systems increasingly mediate their working lives.
