Call for Candidates for the 37th Term of CDS Government

 

It's election time in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators. Unlike most places in Second Life, the CDS chooses it's leadership. And twice a year, they have an election for their Representative Assembly and their Chancellor. 

The schedule for this spring's election go as follows:

April 8 - Census of citizens for eligibility to run for office

April 15 - Citizen qualification deadline for right to vote

April 18 - Call for Candidates for Chancellor and for RA

May 1 - Deadline for Declaration of Candidacy

May 4 - Dean posts list of candidates

May 7 - Campaigning starts

May 14 - Polls open

May 21 - Polls close

May 22 - 31, incoming RA take their affirmations of office and members meet to elect their officers

June 1 - The RA and Chancellor of the 37th Government of the CDS take office.

It was on April 17, a day early, that the Call for Candidates went out.

Today (April 17) is the first day to declare your candidacy for the offices of Representative Assembly (RA) and Chancellor. These are very important offices for our CDS Community. When we elect these representatives we are electing friends and neighbors to work on our behalf to set the direction of our community, enact our laws and regulations, and manage all the tasks that keep the CDS a wonderful place to live. Now is your time to participate and declare candidacy.

So far, one person, Almut Brunswick, has declared his intention to run. More will certainly follow in the next ten days. 

In contrast to many real-life elections, the CDS elections have remained largely drama-free for some years.

It will soon be election time in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators. Unlike most communities, the CDS chooses it's leaders, and has a procedure to do so. 

CDS Election Update

 

On October 21, the fall elections in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators started with the call for qualified residents to announce their candidacy. Yesterday, Wednesday November 4, Delia Lake the CDS Dean posted the list of candidates.

The period for Declaration of Candidacy for the 34th Term of Government for the CDS has concluded. Our offices in government positions subject to election consists of one Chancellor and five members of the Representative Assembly (RA).

Normally there would be a short campaign season for about a week before the polls open. But with this short list of candidates, any events wouldn't be debates.

CDS Announcment: CDS Election Dates, Autumn 2020

 

The CDS is not only a beautiful place to live but also a community of interesting people who determine how the CDS is run. We elect representatives to manage the day to day, month to month work that makes the CDS wonderful.

The citizens who run for office are our CDS friends and neighbors.  Maybe you will decide to be one of them.

A government term of office for the 5 members of the Representative Assembly (RA) and for the Chancellor is 6 months, so 2 terms a year. December 1 through May 31, and June 1 through November 30 each year.

This election starting now is the 34th term for which the CDS community will be electing representatives. Here are the relevant dates.  Watch notices for more information about our election process.

Press Release: Join Us for One Billion Rising in Second Life 2020!

For the seventh year, on February 14, 2020, men and women in Second Life will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and people across the world to Rise, Resist and Unite as a show of unity, individual strength, and the need for change.

1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, we rise – in countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.

We call on you this year to be braver, go deeper, reflect, study, listen, learn, awaken to what you don’t know, ask the difficult questions, engage, take actions, and push yourselves out of your comfort zones physically and intellectually. We call on you to commit to resistance and solidarity.

Because Rising is no longer a campaign – it is a way of life.

RISE! RESIST! UNITE!

The Second Life event will feature a four-region stage where 200 people can come together to dance, surrounded by an area of art installations, an arena for poetry and dramatic productions, and informational exhibits. A variety of amazing live performers and DJs will play over the 24-hour period and poetry and dramatic events will be held at different times, enabling people all over the world to attend this virtual event no matter their timezone. The regions will have a General maturity rating to allow all residents an opportunity to participate. Pictures are welcome on the event’s Flickr group.

This year, One Billion Rising in Second Life is especially saluting the work and courage of female heroes from across the world. We’ll be posting more details over the coming month.

CDS Election Update

On Saturday November 2, the election campaign of the Confederation of Democratic Simulators, or CDS, officially began. The largest event would be an election rally at Cathy Sabre's venue at Alpine Meadow a week later on Saturday November 9. There was a little dancing with music provided by Maggi696 Resident. Afterwards was a discussion. Asking Rosie Grey if there ware any issues, she answered, "Nothing in particular has come up so far. ... perhaps people are a bit exhausted by real-life politics at the moment." Cathy herself thought, "There is always the discussion of how to attract more avatars to CDS. Everything else is mostly administration."

Of the sole candidate for the Chancellorship, Emilia Dagostino (emilia Avindar), Rosie thought, "I'm sure she will do fine (smile). She loves the CDS, and that's the biggest thing." Cathy thought, "She is extremely intelligent, so will probably get the dance without much problem." A third felt, "She seems to have old knowledge about the CDS too."

Due to some technical issues, the opening of the polls was delayed. On Thursday evening, Nov 14, one of the Representative Assembly candidates, Lyubov (20180414 Resident) invited people over for a candidate chat. A few people showed up, and it was a small, friendly discussion. People were looking forward to the Inagural Ball on December 7, though didn't mention any burning issues.

So it appears This month's election at the CDS is a low key affair with the voters and candidates in a laid-back mood. It has been hoped that despite the lack of burning issues, there will be a high turnout at the polls anyway, as a healthy democracy depends on a high turnout. Time will tell.

Crowdfunder To Save Hangars Liquides Sims

In a further development on the continuing story about the Hangars Liquides cyberpunk-themed sims in danger of closing at the end of the month, it was announced in the group that a crowdfunder to save them had been launched on indiegogo.com.

We have just launched our crowndfunding campaign to save the city.

You can donate anything you feel like, keep in mind the 100 EUR perk is like the regular rentals yearly.

Djehan Kidd is offering two perks for people do donate. For a donation of $112 USD, you'll get an apartment in Hangars for a year. For a donation of $1122, you get one of four platinum rooftop lofts.

As of the writing of this article, $1257 of the $6735 goal had been raised.

CDS Election Campaigning: 恭子 Kyoko (Samara Barzane)

It's election time in the Confederation of Democratic Simulators. For the job of Chancellor in the community, two people threw their hat in the ring for the position: Drewski Northman and 恭子 Kyoko (Samara Barzane). On Sunday, Kyoko held a discussion about her case to be the community's leader, which could be summarized as "Respect, Responsibility, and Resourcefulness," and what she would do if elected.

Cafe Wellstone, The Twin Political Campaign Buildings, And The Trump Pub

With just a short time before the US Presidential Election, Bixyl Shuftan does a look at four political-themed locations not mentioned before this season. One was a location from previous elections that had moved and only now was the Newser made aware of where it is now: Cafe Wellstone. Besides that, there were also two political buildings standing side by side appearing to each represent one of the candidates. And there was also a pub for Trump supporters.

Eye On The Blog: Linden Lab Calls for Residents to Star in Ads

Want your avatar on webpages across the Internet? That's what Linden Lab is offering for their next ad campaign. They're asking for residents who aren't shy about showing both their real life and Second Life selves to star in their ads.

Banker by day, but intergalactic space cowboy in Second Life? We may be looking for you! We are now casting both humans and their avatars for a new promotional campaign that will be featured on SecondLife.com and across the web. For this campaign, we’re looking for people who are comfortable revealing their “human side” alongside their avatars in Second Life, like in the image above. Specifically, we are looking for those whose avatars do not physically resemble their owners. This promotion aims to spotlight the diverse and creative communities in Second Life, so please apply if you’d like to share your passion for Second Life with the world! 

Those residents interested are asked to fill out an application form by a minute before Midnight SL time on May 1st. Among the questions asked are why they're interested in being in the campaign and what they like about Second Life and what they do inworld. Linden Lab says "no personal information provided will be disclosed publicly" unless the person is chosen and agrees to take part in the ads.

Video: Rally to Save City of Heroes

Footage of a demonstration in the City of Heroes MMO on Saturday Sept 8. The decision by NCsoft to shut down the game naturally isn't sitting well with the players. Many aren't just sitting down, but taking action to get the attention of the company behind the game and hopefully change their minds.

Massively writer Eliot LeFebvre who plays CoH is among the supporters of the protests, admitting the odds are against them, but, "at this point, 'winning' doesn't enter into it. The point is that was as players have to stand up and make it clear that this game is important to us, that whether it remains online or not, you can't just shut it down after three months with no warning. We have a voice; we need to make use of it. Sometimes you fight because you need to fight, not because you expect it to work."
