Veterans Isle Benefit Concert Raises Over 100,000L

On Sunday June 26, Veterans Isle was the location of a benefit concert. From 10 AM to about 3PM, one DJ and several live musicians performed for the crowd. The event was to raise money for Homes Foe Our Troops, and was organized in part by Frets Nirvana.

Beat the Summer heat folks!  Today is our monthly Homes For Our Troops benefit.  And it is going to be a cool one!  Right now we have Kyle Forrester kicking it off with an hour of great DJ music. Then take a look at this lineup:

Kyle Forrester DJ 10 AM
Fly Kugin 11 AM
Austin Moores 12 PM
Mavenn 1 PM
Charice 2 PM

Come on out and help us hit our goal today ….for those that have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

As it turned out, Fly was held up due to real life. So Kyle DJed longer than planned. She would later tell me, "Sure this gets My name out there but ... I get to do one of my favorite things and raise money for a good cause. Doesn't get much better than that."

People would donate money into two house-shaped kiosks on either side of the stage as the performances went on. Occasionally, Frets would challenge the crowd to put in more, "Hit that 50k by half time folks, and I am putting in another 2500." He would also remind the people why Homes For Our Troops was a worthy charity, "Folks ...Nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent goes directly towards building Homes for our extremely injured veterans through Homes for Our Troops!  This is incredible.  The industry standard says if you can find a charity 65 cents or above that is good.  So this is excellent!

"Since inception HFOT has built 330 homes. (as of 1/01/2022). And HFOT has approximately 72 projects in the pipeline for our extremely injured veterans."

The Newser was also informed by someone in the crowd they planned to do a motorcycle HFOT repaint , with all of the money going to the charity (further details to come).

At the end of the event, a total of 105,175 Linden dollars had been collected.

These benefit concerts are usually on the last weekend of the month.

RFL Announcement: Last Day For RFL2022 Team Fundraising

On July 1 all RFL kiosks will automatically reset to $0 and go into ‘off-season mode’ (no team designation). All funds donated to the kiosks will go into a general, non-team affiliated, ACS fund until the kiosks reactivate on February 18, 2023 for RFL 2023 - Hope Floats.

Please note: there is no reason to stop fundraising, cancer has no off-season!

EOTB: Linden Lab Lowering Price of Event Regions, Offering Two Levels, Sim Rollbacks Now Cost $25 USD

On May 2, Linden Lab announced they were making special Event Regions available for residents. While they boasted higher performance, such as a capacity of up to 175 avatars and up to 30,000 land impact, they were expensive. Following the introductory period, they would require "a set-up fee of US$999 (includes first month), and a rate of $899/month after the first 30 days." Compared to private sims having a monthly charge of $229 USD and a setup fee of $349 USD, expensive.

Last Thursday, Linden Lab announced they were lowering the price, and offering two levels of Event Regions. The lower priced one was called "Event Region Pro." It cost $449 USD a month "with no additional setup fee." They have the 175 avatar limit, more than 20% improvement in script performance, and upon request extended chat range. Three more options were available for fees. An increase to 30,000 Land Impact would cost an extra $30 USD a month. An Instancing Service, or cloning of an Event Region, was $50 USD per request. And rollback services, done within 48 hours, were $25 USD each.

The more expensive level is "Event Regions Elite." Besides having the features of Pro, the Land Impact is raised to 30,000 with no fee. Niether are there fees for rollbacks or cloning of event regions, and "White-glove concierge service." The price is "$599 per month with no setup fee."

It would then have this to say about region rollbacks:

In addition to these new product offerings, we are pleased to announce region rollbacks as a service. This service is now available to all private region owners. If you make a mistake with region content, or want to restore a previous build, you can now request to roll the region back to a specific time. Please note that rollbacks will still be at Linden Lab’s discretion and are not guaranteed. Rollback services are available at $25 per request.

A rollback of a sim was once done without a fee, but at the discretion of Linden Lab, which cautioned to treat them as "a safety mechanism to be used only when something goes very badly wrong," and one could only roll back a few days.

For more information, check the page on the Linden blog.

The (Official) SL19B Events Wind Down

Since Thursday June 16, the Second Life Nineteenth Birthday grounds have been the scene of many events from the Music Fest, to Meet the Lindens (and Moles), to various DJ parties. Last weekend, Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26 were the last official days of events.

Among those whooping it up were those at DJ Tantari's set at 9AM on Saturday, "Oh won't you give me all of your Desire! I wanna take you higher. Let me take you HIGHER! .... They call me Miss MixVix for a reason. (grin)"

But the official events were not the only ones. I found a gathering at the Bellisseria Bureau or Bureaucracy exhibit.

And in the Burners exhibit had an impromptu party.

On the night of Sunday June 26, I had to be somewhere. So I sent an alt over when it was an hour before Midnight.

DJ Ninja had the honor of being the final official performer. Out on the dance floor, stage manager Vee was mixing it up with Grumpy Mole and Dion Mole.

As the hour went on, people talked about how much they enjoyed the Birthday, "I love Contraption, best steampunk stuff. We are all dancing and partying in Walton's creation right now." "I so gonna miss SL19B *cries*" "Just wait, SL20B is coming!" "Lets start SL20B tomorrow... one year paaaaaarty (big grin)" "Yesss looking forward to next year (smile)" "I don't think they ready for this to be over." "Haha! We are never ready for this to end!" "Second Life Birthday, the party doesn't end, it's just recharging for later."

Eventually came the last tune. And then it was done, the usual radio stream taking over.

AT THIS TIME ALL STAGES ARE CLOSED!

Thank you to all the performers for the hours and talent given to the event and a BIG thank you to everyone who attended!  All of us coming together to have a great time is what Second Life is all about!

We can't wait to see you in 51 weeks when we do it all over again, even bigger for SL20B!

And so, people gave their goodbyes, "Ninja, perfect end to the party!" "Pleasure as always." "Thank you everyone it was amazing to perform and work here hugs thank you so much!!!!" "Thanks everyone  for everything you've done...Have a great night and day.." "Thank you Moles, Greeters, Volunteers and all I forgot for this AMAZING SL19B!!!!" "Thank you all looking forward to seeing everyone next year." "I had so much fun, Happy SLB!  YAY!!!" "Thank you staff, crew, moles, and everyone who made this place for us (smile)." "Hope to join the crew again next year!" "Good night guys! Thank you for everything!" "Take care everyone! To all the staff and moles, see you on the party!" "Thank you all for this awesome time (smile)."Dion Mole himself would say, "A big thank you to the Stage Crew, volunteers and all the performers!"

But this isn't the end of the Second Life Birthday. The sims will still be up until Tuesday July 5, so people can check out the numerous exhibits and get the gifts. The SL19B "Shop and Hop" is still going on. Plus there are still the impromptu parties that spring up, such as those in the last few hours before the sims are scheduled to close.

Last Day for (Official) SLB Events

For those who've waited to check out the dance parties at the Second Life Birthday, or can't get enough of them, today's your last day to do so. The last scheduled ones are today, Sunday June 26.

For the list check out the Calendar: (link). It should be noted that there was no room for the last several events to be listed, so keep an eye for announcements in the Birthday group.

Post-Walk Relay Events

For most teams, the Relay Weekend of June 11-12 was the end of their fundraising. But some gave it one last effort. Among them was the Relay Rockers, whom had the goal of raising enough to get the combined season total to past $450,000 USD. Making it a Bring Your Own Kiosk event, other teams were invited to take part.

Join the Relay Rockers for a GIANT BYOK PARTY BEACH PARTY @ Arinultra Cay.
Bring everybody.

Trader Whiplash provided the music for the beach party. After 43 minutes, Nuala Marcus announced the news on both Discord and a group announcement.

$450,004 !!!!  US   Woo hoooooooo  We did it!!

Other teams would have one last event, such as Team Aurora who did so last night, capping it with a fireworks show. Other teams such as Task Force One For Life, Mammoth Ridge, and OD would also have one. Today at 5PM is the RingSlingers Concert at New Oa. Tuesday's performance of the Second Life Cheerleading Squad from 4 to 5pm at Greased Lightning means the last official Relay event for the season. But there's still Making Strides this October, and then the Christmas Expo.

Go Relay!

At The SL19B, Part Two

The Second Life Birthday may have started late last week, but it is still going on. Gemma Cleanslate, who is among the volunteers, was still able to take some time to report on things. There's a lot of exhibits to see. But there are also events such as music, and wrestling.

Read Gemma's story in Events.

The "Shop and Hop"

While for many celebrating the Second Life Birthday do so by attending discussions with the Lindens and Moles, going to music parties, and touring the exhibits, for some of us the thing to do is shop. And so there is the "Shop and Hop" event for the SL19B. It's set in twenty sims separate from the main Birthday area, but still in a Steampunk theme, as is the event theme.

This year, you’ll find a record-breaking 400 participating merchants across 20 regions. In addition to deep discounts and deals, there are also exclusive and completely new gifts available for free at all the shops.

You can find SURLs for the hundreds of stores taking part on the page for the event in the Linden blog. Or if you want to just jump right in, here's one place: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Gleaming/112/111/52

Nvidia Card Graphics Issues

When it comes to graphics cards, NVIDIA is one of two brands Linden Lab recommends your computer uses. But lately, it seems the latest driver programing is causing glitches and problems.

The Firestorm Wiki states a bug "appeared with Nvidia driver 515 and 516," with some also saying the issue is on driver 512.95, causing lines and/or flashing objects to appear on the screen, "and occurs when Advanced Lighting Model is enabled. ... Symptoms include horizontal lines on the screen, objects repeatedly flashing visible/non-visible, shadow issues on objects & avatars, and a wood-grain effect on some objects or avatars."

The solution, at least until the bug is fixed, is to "roll back the driver or use the Nvidia Studio Drivers instead." Or one can turn off Advanced Lighting.

This is not the only issue. The wiki also reported recent updates on Nvidia, "including driver version 381.65," may stop Firestorm from starting up, "The crash is reported to occur on the “Detecting Hardware' step."

Another issue is with 378.49 Nvidia drivers is there may be a blue tint on 64-bit viewers when Advanced Lighting is turned off.

Team Firestorm filed about the issue with Nvidia (here).

To read more about the issue, check out the page on Firestorm's Wiki, or this article on Modem World.

Reader Submitted: Last Stand At The Relay Track

From Kamida Delec, who went to the Relay track sims a few days after we last wrote about the, and found they were still up. But not for long. As she was there, they began going offline around her, "I wonder if I get a warning to vacate the sim first." And then the one she was in went offline, "nope, region went down without a warning."

ARK: Fjordur

In her latest game review, Nydia Tungsten looks back at an old favorite, Ark Survival Evolved, or simply "Ark" as it's often called. After some time, she lost interest in it due to changes she felt were due to the developers changing things to suit one group of players at the expense of hers. But modifications brought her attention back. Among these is a new map: Fjordur. So what did Nydia have to say about it?

Advert: M&M Creations' Cottage Boiseau

I have always loved writing the stories about my life whilst building my cottages. Tales of discoveries and daydreams, some happy, some sad, some fantastical!

Stories of meeting so many interesting people  .....And every one of them is a precious gem in my jewel box of Life, that helped to while away the days spent creating.

But this cottage, Boiseau - was different.

The creation of this cottage was driven by love - not a daydream, not a fantasy....but a love found. The pure, driven energy of love has propelled me to create this latest build almost overnight ..or so it seems!

I dedicate this Cute Tiny Cottage Boiseau to Laure, my love.

Premium Plus Now Available

 *

On early Thursday afternoon, Linden Lab made the Premium Plus option for accounts available. This was two days after Patch Linden gave details at the Second Life Birthday.

We are so excited to be officially launching our Second Life Premium Plus offerings today! The Premium Plus membership level is designed for the most dedicated Second Life Residents with more weekly stipends, more groups, more mainland, and even more of all the things you love!  There’s only one thing there’s less of - fees. Premium Plus subscribers get free uploads for sounds, textures, and animations, free recurring events, lower group fees, and did we mention - $15 Name Changes?!

The all-new Premium Plus is available for $29.99 per month and $249 per year with a special limited time promotional price of $24.99 per month. Not ready for Premium Plus? You can still continue to enjoy our existing Premium offering, which is available for $11.99 per month and $99 per year.

It's interesting to note that the Lab is listing a cash value next to the weekly stipend and free mainland, $11 USD and $13 USD respectively, so it can say one gets $24 USD worth of freebies for the $29.99 monthly price.

So far, there's been plenty of talk about Premium Plus, including a thread in the forums. On the whole, the response seems to be skepticism. Many stated they don't feel the extra bennefits are worth the price. Still, some did say they were interested, one saying, "I can run up 249 dollars worth of texture uploads a year pretty quickly if given enough time and space." "I ran the numbers for my account and I'd save about $6 a year." There were comments that one or two more things thrown in, such as free mesh uploads and name changes, might make then interested.

Some people will be signing up for Premium Plus. How many, well, we'll see.

To read the blog post, Click Here

Addition: Near the end of today's "Meet the Lindens," Grumpity announced they had over 700 Premium Plus accounts. So with this many in just a few hours, it seems they've had a successful start.

Press Release: HFOT June 26 Benefit Concert

Frets Nirvana and US Military Veterans Group announce 2022’s June benefit for Homes For Our Troops in Second Life for June 26, 2022!

Frets Nirvana, longtime supporter and contact for Homes For Our Troops in Second Life in conjunction with the US Military Veterans Group, announces the 2022 April benefit for the Veterans Support Organization Home For Our Troops at Veteran’s Isle .

Frets Nirvana states:  “HFOT is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans are multiple amputees, paraplegic, quadriplegic or suffered severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).  Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent by Homes for Our Troop has gone to directly support Veterans. DURING THAT TIME HFOT HAS BUILT 330 SPECIALLY ADAPTED HOMES NATIONWIDE FOR EXTREMELY INJURED VETERANS.”

In 2021 the community in Second Life sent  over $21,000 to Homes For Our Troops, thanks to many kind hearts and great Second Life performers. That was a 40% increase over 2020’s donations of over $15,000.

15 Veterans and their families received the keys to their forever homes in 2021 and the donations received in Second Life were part of that effort. Currently HFOT has 73 projects underway for extremely wounded veterans.

Home for Our Troops benefit concerts feature premier Second Life talent monthly at Veteran’s Isle. The June 26 concert for 2022 is scheduled from 10AM to 3 pm PST.  Featured artists will be DJ Waya Snowpaw, Fly Kugin, Austin Moores, Mavenn and Charice.

Sponsored by Frets Nirvana and the U.S. Military Veteran’s Group of Second Life.  To learn more about Homes for Our Troops visit https://www.hfotusa.org.

Cartoon of The Day: Nervous Parrot, Nervous Pirate

Taken at Antiquity Texas at the ACTS For Life Float Racing. Pirates are often depicted as having pet parrots. But among the problems are those claws. Maybe not so bad if the buccaneer is wearing a jacket. But a nervous parrot and a bare shoulder is an accident waiting to happen.

Premium Plus Details Revealed By Patch Linden

For some time, Linden Lab has occasionally mentioned plans for an improved version of Premium accounts, called "Premium Plus." Occasionally some small details about them were mentioned, but the bigger ones were kept quiet about. Yesterday at his "Meet the Lindens" interview at the Second Life Birthday on Monday June 20, he finally revealed just what Premium Plus offered, and would cost (24:30 minutes into the 1 hour and 44 minute video by the Lab).

There is double the amount of mainland tier, from 1024 square meters to 2048. The land can also be split between mainland owned and a Linden home (they're available either in 512 or 1024 square meter parcels).

Later on, 2048 square meter parcel Linden Homes will be an option for Premium Plus accounts. It was hinted this might be done towards the end of the year.

Able to claim or request a specific Linden Home, as long as it's still "available through the duration of the time in which you place the request through support manually." Patch stated he had to "heavily caveat" this detail, "the whole system is automated, and not even we can beat it ourselves." In theory, two or three Premium Plus residents could become close neighbors.

"You can get two land experiences that you can make," Premium only having the option to create one.

The sign-up bonus is 3000 Linden dollars (for Premium, it is 1000 L).

The weekly stipend is more than doubled, from 300 to 650 Linden dollars.

The number of groups one can be in doubles from 72 to 140 (basic is 42).

The cap for stored messages when offline goes up from 80 to 160.

No fees to upload textures and sounds. Mesh and animesh upload fees will change in the future.

The group creation fee is reduced from 100 Linden dollars to ten Lindens.

The cost to list events on the Linden blog is eliminated.

The number of Animesh attachments will increase (Patch stated from one to two, but this is the increase from basic to Premium).

Premium Plus members get a "special support phone line" for direct concierge level support, with a toll-free 1-800 number, with Residents from outside the United States also able to use.

The Lab will make available sandboxes reserved only for Premium Plus accounts in the future.

The cost for all this is $29.99 US dollars a month, with a $24.99 introductory price, or $249.00 USD if charged yearly, slightly more than double the $11.99 USD monthly and $99 yearly fees for Premium.

There are no changes to Basic or Premium accounts.

As of the writing of this article, there is no post on the Linden blog, or page on their website to sign up for Premium Plus. Patch stated there should be in a day or two.

Addition: We originally gave $24.99 a month as the price, without saying that was the introduction offer. Sorry about the error.

Alden Cortes was going around the SL19B when she found something, "I was looking at this underwater exhibit that at first looked normal.

"And then as I looked a bit closer, I realized this exhibit was not new.
