SL Video: "SL23B - Meet the Lindens: Second Life Founder Philip Rosedale"

From Linden Lab on June 23, the Monday June 22 Meet the Lindens event with Philip Linden, "Second Life founder Philip Rosedale (aka Philip Linden) answers community questions in this special "Meet the Lindens" event from Second Life's 23rd Birthday Celebration."

The Meet The Lindens Events

Last week from Monday June 22 to Friday June 26, the Meet the Lindens events took place. All took place at the Orpheum Theater, where four sims met, three for the audience which was over a hundred for each discussion. In the past, Patch Linden would usually have an important announcement, such as a new upcoming type of Linden Home, or in the case of last year plans for commercial areas in Belliseria, which would appear some months ago.

That wouldn't be the case this year. Patch Linden was gone of course, dismissed from Linden Lab a couple months ago. Interestingly enough, Philip Linden would thank him for helping make the SLB events what they are today. But there were no important announcements of changes that would stick around, no new Linden Home, no new options for paid accounts, or the like. There was the announcement about the Golden Ticket contest, but that only affects a few lucky winners plus one very lucky winner.

Instead the Lindens, and Moles in the last event, would answer questions from the audience. For some reason, Linden Lab would have no live broadcasting. Instead there were videos available later on Youtube. Vic Morington did make live Youtube footage available for those who wanted to see, thought.

Videos of each of the events will be made available later, as well as some other activities of the SLB.

EOTB: Questions Requested For Meet The Lindens Events

Do you have a question for the Lindens? Here's your chance to get it answered.

A few days ago, Linden Lab posted on their blog that they were accepting questions in advance for the Lindens at the "Meet the Lindens: events" from Monday June 22 to Friday June 26. People are asked to submit their questions a Google Doc (here) by Sunday June 21. You will be asked if there's a specific Linden you want the question directed at, and if you want your name mentioned.

During the celebrations, there will be a series of Q&A events where you can meet the Lindens live at SL23B! This is your chance to connect directly with the people behind Second Life and hear more about what’s happening across the platform.

The founder of Second Life, Philip Rosedale (a.k.a. Philip Linden), will be joining along with leads from our Product, Engineering, Marketing, Growth, and Second Life Studios teams.

Do you have questions you want to ask any team? Submit your questions at this link no later than June 21st to be considered for inclusion in the Q&A during these live events.

It should be noted that not all questions submitted will necessarily be answered (the announcement stating the questions will be considered).

"Meet The Moles" Today at 1PM SL Time, Live

Philip Linden at The SL22B

On Wednesday June 25, Philip Linden, the founder of Linden Lab and considered the creator of Second Life (Philip Rosedale in real life), was at "Meet the Lindens" at the Second Life Birthday's Astral Athenaeum. Besides those listening in on Youtube, there were well over a hundred avatars present in this intersection of four sims (too many to completely rezz as my picture shows).

Philip shared the stage with Bret Linden, but did almost all the talking. He would express his joy with Second Life and what people have created here over time. He would also answer a number of questions. When asked about AI, he answered Linden Lab was taking a cautious approach about introducing it, and would bring up an essay he'd written recently, "Ultraviolet Catastrophe," in which he suggested in the near future AI bots could overwhelm the Internet social media to the point people will drastically change how they use it. Other questions included possibly bringing back the original Linden World, what's going on with the browser viewer "Project Zero," helping creators in making their builds, and more.

What would he have changed About Second Life? He stated it wasn't an easy answer, but he felt he would have provided more support to "democracy and groups," talking about making groups more powerful somehow. He would then give a closing message:

"Everybody here, all of us, should be proud to have been part of what is now more than twenty years of an experiment in demonstrating that online experiences, something you do online on your computer with other people, can actually bring people together and make them happier and healthier, as opposed to making them lonelier and angrier, which sadly seems to be what we've done with most of our technological product time in the last decade or so....

"And the hope that gives to the world is something we all need right now. The whole world needs to see that you can use technology to bring us together. It is not just a force for evil. And so I think everybody here should be incredibly proud of having been part of that experiment and hopefully continuing to be a part of it indefinitely as we carry on. So thank you."

After the event officially ended, Philip stepped off the stage to chat with the audience who remained, in to a mix of avatars of all kinds, including a goat avatar, "Philip Linden is the G.O.A.T." People had more questions, including someone asking if it was possible for juries to decided the punishments of troublemakers. Philip was intrigued by the idea, but felt if it was ever considered there'd need to be a number of precautions taken.

Eventually, Philip had to leave, and so people went on to other activities.

There would be another "Meet the Lindens" the next day, but a pre-recorded session with Brett and Strawberry Linden. Later today at 1 PM SL time is the final "Meet" for the SL22B, a live session with many of the Moles of the Department of Public Works.

Patch Linden Announced Upcoming Linden Home Theme, Ridgewave Conclave, "Foray Into Commercial" in Belliseria In The Future

On Monday June 23, the first of the Meet The Lindens events took place. Missy Mole, in a tiny avatar with a top hat, welcomed the audience and introduced a few of the Products Operations team, Patch Linden, Kira Linden, and Izzy Linden.

Missy would say that residents had sent in over a hundred questions. When asked about what the plans for Linden Homes were (4:42), Patch answered, "There's a lot of stuff in the works. ,,, we just recently released Aspen Ridge, and we also released updates to the log homes by adding some additional floor plans." He went on to say they've been in the process of updating Linden Homes in Bellisseria over time, calling it "a challenge because of how big everything is now."

Patch would then say the next Linden Home theme "is right around the corner. ,,, it will be called Ridgewave Conclave." It will be for Premium-Plus residents. Patch would give no further details, "let you imagine what that might be."

Patch would also mention "our foray into commercial," saying there would soon be commercial parcels on Bellisseria "with this theme rolling out.... it will be separate and kind of it's own thing. It will take advantage of using your land allotment where you can split it between home and commercial." There would be more information, "as we get closer to launch." But the Linden Homes would have a priority over the commercial areas.

Patch would go on to say further into the year, there would be more updates, including a "big" Linden Home theme "at the end of the year," saying it was "a mix of both" Premium and Premium Plus and promised "exciting features baked into it as well."

More on the "Meet the Lindens" later.

Second SL21B Town Hall, Video And Summary

Wednesday January 26 was the second of the Town Hall events at the Second Life Birthday this week. Patch Linden, the VP of Product ad Marketing, was the most prominent. Others on stage were Keira Linden, the Support Operations Manager, Product Operations Manager Derrick Linden, and Creative Producer Izzy Linden. Besides Vic Morrington (link), it was also filmed by Pantera Polnocy (link), whose video had a side window for local text chatter.

On Linden Homes, Patch stated there was a Premium-Plus Linden home under development, though didn't mention the theme. Later in the Second Life forums, he would ask for suggestions. Patch also stated a phasing out of older Linden Homes was desired, but as of now there was no timetable for it.  Someone asked if two Premium-level Linden homes for Premium Plus residents was an option. Patch stated it could be done, but wouldn't be any time soon as it would reduce the number of Linden Homes available.

Someone asked if the continent of Zindra could be connected to the others via water sims. Patch answered that was an option for the future, but it couldn't happen anytime soon.

It was asked what was being done about hate speech "from far right groups." Kiera Linden answered they were doing what they could, relying on inworld abuse reports, "It's difficult to keep up because there's lots of corners of the world that don't pop up very often."

The idea of shared accounts for businesses was brought up, which came up earlier this month in the Second Life forums when a merchant stated he had been relying on one, even though it was against the terms of service and Linden Lab cracking down was making it difficult for his store to function. Patch stated while he could understand why merchants would use shared accounts, the ban on this was for good reasons, that there was the clear ability for an account's Linden dollars to be stolen and the inventory deleted, and that access to one's account had the potential for exposure or real-life financial bank and credit card information, "it has the ability to throw your money out the window, and do damage .... empty into the trash can kind of damage. ... We're as protective of your accounts as we can be. " Plus there was the possibility of a business relationship to sour and turn hostile. Still, Patch stated they were open to change and perhaps something could be worked out in the future.

The question of content theft in sales came up. Kiera Linden stated it can be tricky when two people come to them saying they're both the original creator of something, and the best solution for people was to continue to file DMCA reports.

Also asked about was Linden Labs' relationships to charities, ensuring the money goes where it's supposed to. Patch answered there were two levels. The first included recognized charities that had long run in Second Life such as the American Cancer Society and the Michel J. Fox Foundation. The second level was "individuals who are interested in raising funds," saying they were limited in what they could do to help other than list events on the Destination Guide, but did "verify any past fundraisers they have done."

It was asked if there will be multiple partner lines for those in "poly" relationships. Patch talked about work on something allowing flexibility "Yes, but we don't have a timeline. ... It is something that has gotten attention."

Someone asked about land barons supposedly grabbing up Bellisserian land. Patch answered, "This is actually fascinating to hear. We just need to be aware who is doing it ... you cannot sublease parcels. If someone is going so, we'd like to hear about it, File an abuse report."

It was also asked will there be Lifetime Premium Accounts? Patch's answer was a tease, "I don't know, you'll have to come tot he Mole Town Hall to Find out. ... the number 21 might be involved."

Also asked about was a video option for abuse reports, making unclaimed Mainland more easily available to residents, making voice to text and text to voice servers "it's being worked on," the electric vehicle offered as a prize in the SL20B, which was won in a state the winner was able to claim anonymously, handling the accounts of deceased friends and relatives, and others.

There were also some comical comments, such as Patch musing there would be a tollway road through the continents, charging residents money as they drove through it, what was the favorite pizza of the Lindens, and "How many Moles does it take to screw in a light bulb."

The Town Hall events go on to Friday June 28, and the last Meet the Lindens event is the Community Roundtable on Monday July 1 at 11:30 AM SL time, also at the Aquatorium.
