Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

A number of you have seen the 1971 movie "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory" and/or the 2005 remake "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." While there's no chocolate factory like this in real life, someone made it appear here in Second Life. Gemma Cleanslate took it upon herself to head there and explore this "sweet operation."

A Correction

A few days ago, the Newser reported that Raglan Shire had reached the age of fifteen. As it turned out, we made a slight mistake. The community actually turned fourteen. The Newser regrets the error, though still wishes the community happy anniversary.

Interview With Kyoko Furse-Barzane (Samara Barzane) About The Arts

Kyoko Furse-Barzane (Samara Barzane) is known for a number of things in Second Life. She's been one of the Confederation of Democratic Simulator's most noted residents, and is currently it's Chancellor. But she's also an artist, in addition to having run and owned a number of art galleries inworld. She is currently the curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art in the CDS. Kayly Iali recently interviewed her about what she's done with the arts over time. Kyoko had quite a bit to say.

The Outer Garden

Rosie (RougeRedHead01 Resident) came across "quite a stunning place to explore," called "The Outer Garden." Dropping in, it looks like a forest at winter. But there's plenty of scenes, which one can pose on which make it a great place to take pictures. While exploring, Rosie ran into one photographer whom asked her to pose for one.

Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "Methamphetamine"

 *

"Methamphetamine"

Saturday April 10

10 AM to 11 AM SL time

Methamphetamine was first derived from another stimulant in 1893. Initially unrestricted, it seduced populations of many countries by its stimulant effects and addictive nature.

Aside from a few accepted medical uses as a controlled substance, it has played

          – an economic role as a profitable drug,

          – a geopolitical role as an agent of enhancement for military personnel and political leaders,

          – and with underground manufacture and distribution, in the illegal drug trade in the United States and elsewhere.

This presentation will discuss the pharmacology of N-methamphetamine and its use in medical treatment as well as drug abuse, with emphasis on the mechanisms of action and pathophysiology that arises from addiction and long term use. We will also examine the medical costs and criminal impact on society arising from the existence of this drug.

Raglan Shire Turns 14

Second Life's most noted communities of "Tinies," Raglan Shire, has turned fourteen years old. The news was announced in the community's Discord chat yesterday, Wednesday April 7.

Over the years, the community has remained a unique one in Second Life. It's not just for the small stature of it's residents, but also for it's events, such as it's annual Art Walk, the creativity of many of it's residents, it's squeaky-clean image, and it's friendly reputation.

Happy anniversary Raglan.

*Correction: * As it turned out, there was a mistake. The community came about in April 2007, not 2006. Sorry about the error.

Easter Art Exhibition at Harmony Castle

The story of Easter is told in many ways today, through movies, television, stage plays, and books. But centuries ago, it was told in another way, through art. Dancerina Starlight recently went to Harmony Castle in Gorlen Bay. The place currently hosts an Easter art exhibition with pictures from various artists between the Fourteenth and Nineteenth Centuries showing different scenes of Christ in Jerusalem which "depict episodes of Jesus' journey to the cross and beyond."

Two User-Made Maps of Second Life

Lately the map function of Second Life has been glitched, a fact that somewhat complicated our reporting of the new sims in Bellisseria last week. For a number of residents, these glitches can mean getting around is more complicated and takes longer. And as of now, Linden Lab has no idea when these issues will be fixed. But two people took matters in their own hands with resident-made maps, which can be accessed on a web browser.

One is the Eddy O'Farrel map, found on http://maps.eddyofarrel.com/. The other is the Chaser Zaks map at http://secondlife.softhyena.com/map/. The Chaser Zaks map is more versatile as one can zoom out for a "world map" view showing all of the continents. While it has a "find on map" listed on the right, it doesn't seem to do anything. The first map may change in the future as Eddy plans to update it, "I realise it's probably not that much use right now, particularly as there isn't (yet) any way to search for/load any particular region or area of the map, but I will add more functionality in the next few days if anyone thinks they would actually find it useful."

Neither map can see the new sims, which only show their names. On both maps, the land is still invisible.

Hopefully the Lindens and Moles will fix the Second Life map soon. Until then, hopefully these maps made by residents can help.

Announcement: RFL Sunbeamer Event With DJ Matt

Tomorrow, Thursday April 8 at the Bouncing Bunny Beach Club, the Relay for Life's Sunbeamer team will be having a special event in addition to it's weekly Moon Dance.  From 4 to 6 PM SL time, DJ Matt will be playing country and other tunes. Instead of tips, she asks that any money go to the Relay kiosks.

This event also marks the final two hours of Matt's "Bid Me Pink" fundraiser, and this will be the last chance for people to bid her pink (or to stay her normal self).  At the end of the event, the totals on the kiosks will be tallied and the results made final, and posted. People are also invited to donate to Nydia Tungsten's "Bid Me Mouse or Bunny" fundraiser.

As this is a Relay event, everyone please keep their shorts (and tops for the girls) on.

Following the event, please head over to Sunlight Bay where the Moon Dance will take place, and if you're with another Relay team, by all means ask for a kiosk to be rezzed in it's name.

533 Million Facebook Users Personal Data Leaked Online

Personal data from 533 million Facebook accounts was discovered to have been leaked online. The data comes from users from over 100 countries, "including over 32 million records on users in the US, 11 million on users in the UK, and 6 million on users in India. It includes their phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, bios, and, in some cases, email addresses."

The leak was revealed a few days ago on April 3 by chief technology officer Alon Gal of Hudson Rock, a cybercrime intelligence group. It was posted online on a hacking forum by someone, and "available to anyone with rudimentary data skills." Gal would post his findings on Twitter, "I have yet to see Facebook acknowledging this absolute negligence of your data."

Facebook responded that the reported data was the same as that of a 2019 data leak, "We found and fixed this issue in August 2019." But as many people continue to use the same phone numbers and email addresses, the data could still potentially be useful for scammers and other online schemes.

The leak is being investigated by Ireland's Data Protection Commission, which stated they will work with Facebook to make sure it's claim is true. Joe Tidy of BBC News commented, "The database has likely changed criminal hands many times before now being offered for free."

Scenes From Bellisseria

A few days ago, Bellisseria made the news when the latest expansion of sims connected it to the eastern mainland continents. But elsewhere there's been plenty going on. Gemma Cleanslate took a look around at places she had yet to see, and found things from volcanoes to ice fishing, to signs that a once-missing Linden has been poking around.

Read Gemma's story in Places.

Return to Grace Baptist Church

Easter has come and gone, and we had fun with bunnies, chocolate, and eggs. But there's more to the holiday than that. For religious Christians, it's one of the more important holidays of the year, and of course church. For those in Second Life, there are churches one can go to, which can come in handy for the physically disabled or if one lives too far away from one in real life. Yours truly stopped by one a couple days ago, and had a talk with the pastor as well as two of the parishioners.

Firestorm Viewer Reminder

By tomorrow, Firestorm users using version 6.3.2.58052 will need to update their viewers. It was a few weeks ago on March 16 that Team Firestorm announced on their blog the release of their version 6.4.13(63251) viewer. Jessica commented that earlier, the team determined four updates a year was best, "We will try hard to keep quarterly releases on schedule from this point on, with 4 updates a year, and we hope the majority of you will appreciate this balance."

Team Firestorm has a "three version rule," dating from an agreement with Linden Lab years ago. So the team has to block older versions of it's viewer. The grace period for version 6.3.2.58052 ends today, and it will be blocked tomorrow.

The latest update promises bug fixes, and features including a "massive" RLV update, and a "New free-aim mouse and focus lock for Depth of Field" for screenshots.

Veterans Isle Fundraiser Nets Over 230,000 Lindens

Last Sunday, March 28, Veterans Isle held it's monthly fundraiser concert. Five sets of performers, four of them live musicians, played for the crowd. The event was to raise money for Homes For Our Troops.

Tonight's LIVE PERFORMERS ARE: Toxie Darkmatter, Dude Can Sing, Gibson, and Wolfie Starfire! You don't want to miss this.

DJ Waya was first at 4PM. At 5, Toxie Darkmater took to the stage. At 6PM, it was Dude Can Sing's turn to sing to the audience. 7PM was a last-minute substitute, Raven Zenoria. Last but not least, at 8PM Wofie Starfire finished up the concert. As the performers played, the crowd donated money to two house-shaped kiosk on either side of the stage.

The amount raised that night was larger than normal, a total of 232,186 Linden dollars in both kiosks. This is about twice the level of the past few fundraisers.

The events take place every month, usually on the last Sunday every month, and are organized in part by Frets Nirvana.

Announcement: Equuis Avatar Release Party at Montecito Bay

Coming April 5th, we got an epic release party for the all new Equuis avatar from RUF. The avatar is compatible with most SL mesh bodies, includes it's own bento head, has the BOM stuff, as well as it's own feet. There are SEVERAL colors to choose from as well.

The event will be at Montecito Bay on Monday April 5 from 6 to 8 SL time, music provided by DJ Moni.

Reader Submitted: "Ask, And You Shall Receive"

Have you every lost some of your inventory, land marks, or outfits that took you hours and days to put together? Then you log on and notice they are missing; you panic! You start to sweat, your palms are moist, and you want to cry. You start sobbing. When you compose yourself perhaps after a quart of your favorite alcoholic beverage, you have the courage to enter into the Firestorm Support Chat.

You know who the moderators are in there because they use the bold font but because of your fragile condition it feels as though they are yelling at you personally. They give the best advice and very helpful.
So sit up straight and ask for help.

“I lost my inventory; can someone help me?”

The chat moves along but no reply so you try again. Did you say please by the way? Please and thank you are two of the most important words in any language, even in a Virtual World.

Finally, you get a reply and it is a link to the Firestorm Wiki Encyclopedia as I like to call it. This is where the challenge comes in because maybe there are residents in Second Life that have learning disabilities or just cannot read. What do they do? Are you one of them?

We all do not learn the same. There are four ways us humans/pixels learn. Which one is unique to you and how do you utilize it in Second Life?

Visual learning is partial to seeing and observing things. They are the notetakers and make lists.

Auditory learners tend to learn better when the subject matter is reinforced by sound. They like lectures.

Kinesthetic learners, sometimes called tactile learners, learn through experiencing or doing things.  They like using their hands and make excellent athletes!

And lastly, we have the Reading/Writing learners. They comprehend through reading. My assumption is if you are this type of learner, you are home free when you receive that Wiki page.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help and none of us should be fearful of asking for help in Second Life. If someone asks for help, be patient with them.

In Second Life we all have out gifts, as I like to call them. So, what kind of learner are you and what is your special gift?

Rosie (RougeRedHead01 Resident)

April Fools in Second Life

As it had for the previous nine years, the Second Life Newser posted a gag article. One reader felt we went slightly too far. But I also overheard plenty of compliments. One commented it was the scariest April Fool since the joke about Disney buying the virtual world a few years ago.

But as far as Second Life goes, that was just the start of the April Foolery.

Team Firestorm got in on the act. At one point in the day they gave their logo on their viewer "googly eyes."

Linden Lab also got into the act. On the Second Life Blog, they announced two "Limited Edition" last names.

In appreciation of our Anthro/Furry community in Second Life, we are releasing two new limited edition last names today, only available until April 8th:
UwU
OwO

Checking the "Change Name" page, it appears the option is a real one. Someone on the Second Life forums also stated they saw two others use it.

But this gag last name wasn't the end. On the Second Life Flickr, there was a picture of four tenement apartment buildings.

Come get a sneak peek at our new theme for Linden Homes, on the Millbank region in #SecondLife - just for today!

Checking the Millbank sim at with an alt, the apartment buildings were there. They also had a number of old Soviet Propaganda posters. finding the parking garage entrance, there were no stairs, just "The People's Great and Glorious Elevator." But stepping inside, I ended shot up to the top, falling down, and once I got back up shot up once more. Moving around, I finally managed to get into the top floor. There were a number of markers around to point out where to place objects. On top of the building was a LDPW helicopter.

So why the Soviet theme? Maybe this was a dig at the "Woodburry" griefers of years ago whom occasionally pretended to be Communists.

Run of the mill residents got in on the act as well. Yours truly overheard a singer say to her fans that Linden Lab was asking residents to wear masks, stating it was a way to encourage people in real life to do so.

So despite that things have been rough over the past year with lots of tragedy, April Fools Day is alive and well. And the Lab isn't afraid to get in on it.

Hat Tip: Hamlet Au, Jasmine Dawn

Editor's Note: Just how does one pronounce "UwU" and "OwO"?

Video: "Warthunder's Strange History of April Fools"

From ZoltanSultan on March 20. On April 1 2013, Fans of the "War Thunder" MMO were surprised to see the developers had added flying ponies in the style of "My Little Pony"armed with machine guns and candy bombs. While this only lasted one day, it continues to be talked about years later. But this would only be the first of many stunts pulled by War Thunder ever year. Perhaps none were as funny as the ponies, but most were interesting and some amusing.

Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "Early Cretaceous Meat-Eating Dinosaurs of Maryland and Virginia"

"Early Cretaceous Meat-Eating Dinosaurs of Maryland and Virginia"

Saturday April 3

10 AM to 11 AM

512 fossils from the Early Cretaceous of Maryland are currently stored at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, USA. Of those most are bones of a large, long necked 4-legged dinosaur called Astrodon, which belongs to the Sauropod group. We also have bones from armored Ankylosaur dinosaurs, ornithopod or bird footed dinosaurs, and two meat eaters, Acrocathosaurus and Deinonychus. Acrocanthosaurus was almost the size of a T. rex, and Deinonychus was a raptor. A group of high school students in Virginia and New York collaborated to analyze teeth from these meat eaters in order to reconstruct the ecology of Maryland and Virginia during the Early Cretaceous.

Dr. William Schmachtenberg will present the results of their research during this meeting. The students work have been submitted to the New York Paleontological Society for publication.

Breaking News: Second Life's Cloud Servers Degrading, Lag And Other Issues To Get Significantly Worse

 Update: April Fools

In a stunning development, Linden Lab announced an unexpected and severe problem with the Amazon Cloud Servers that now house Second Life's data. The servers have been deteriorating and glitching, and the problem is going to get much worse.

"It turns out the servers that Amazon provided us with weren't meant to take the strain of a virtual world as active as Second Life is," the statement by the Lab explained, "Not only are we not getting the performance improvements we were hoping for, the lag and other issues such as teleport fails and inventory issues have been slowly getting worse over the past few months."

The statement went on to say that the servers are starting to deteriorate faster,  and so the issues will start to get even worse, and fast. It's estimated that within two weeks, viewers will need four to five times to load information around an avatar after TPing or logging on. Crashes an teleport fails will be several more times likely to happen as well, and items will start vanishing from inventories. Within three weeks, viewers will take ten times as long to process information after logging on or teleporting. That is if people can log on or teleport at all as fails will start to keep people from doing so for five to ten minutes. And within a month, Second Life will become unusable to those without newer and more powerful computers.

Linden Lab is working with Amazon to get better servers and transfer the data to them, but this will take time. For now, the Lab is offering a downloadable code that will allow the servers to better recognize users and their data and not suffer quite as much lag.

Cartoon of the Day: Why This Pet?

So what would intelligent foxes get for pets? Their first choice might not be a dog, for similar reasons most humans don't consider pet monkeys. Though there would be reasons to consider one.

Five Past Online Comics

A number of  us love a good cartoon strip, and for some of us that includes online comics. But no serial comic strip lasts forever. Real life may force the artist to stop due to growing family and job requirements or other reasons. The artist may decide to end the strip while it's still good, or perhaps they've concluded their tale. And of course the artist (or the writer) may pass away. In this story for today, yours truly describes five comics that are no longer updating for various reasons.

Announcement: Fantasy Faire 2021, April 22 – May 9

Many Realms – One Vision.
Fantasy Faire 2021: Building a World Without Cancer

Celebrating its thirteenth year, Fantasy Faire 2021 is the largest gathering of fantasy designers, enthusiasts, roleplayers and performers in the virtual world. From Thursday, April 22 to Sunday May 9, treat yourself to shopping, dance and theater performances, DJ parties, auctions, questing, our Literary Festival, fantasy art, events and roleplaying as thousands of Second Life residents and creators bring their own visions together to support the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world without cancer.

Our formal programming will conclude on Sunday, May 2nd with our Live Auction, but don’t despair, there is an additional week of shopping, questing, and exploring as the Fairelands will be open through Sunday, May 9th. That’s a total of eighteen days of the Faire – and you never know when something unexpected might happen in that final week!

As always, you’ll find fantasy avatars, clothing, furnishings, gadgets and exclusive items available from over 200 of Second Life’s top Fantasy Creators across stunning regions designed by some of the visionary artists behind many of the hottest spots on the Second Life destination guide.

In addition to the shopping regions there will also be Faireland realms that take us beyond commerce, from a Memorial Garden to the Fairelands Quest, the Literary Festival, Performance Stages, from Art Galleries to the Worldling Collection.

Fantasy Faire 2021 will be open to the public April 22 – May 9. The SLurl to the event will be found on the website on our opening day. We welcome you to come and join the story.
