Announcement: Virtual Ability's 15th Annual Mental Health Symposium, Thursday June 25

You are invited to attend Virtual Ability's 15th annual Mental Health Symposium on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

The theme of this year’s Symposium is “PAIN.” This theme applies to everyone, not just to persons with disabilities. The broad topic allows our presenters and panelists from China, Canada, the UK, Belgium and the US to explore a variety of intersections between pain and mental health. Presenters will also offer various strategies for addressing these common issues.

Every year in the spring, our community hosts an international professional conference on topics related to mental health. Not only is this an opportunity for our community members to learn more about important subjects from experts they probably would not have a chance to meet otherwise, it allows the general public to attend a professional conference at no cost.

The conference will take place in Virtual Ability’s Sojourner Auditorium, on Virtual Ability island. The SLURL for the auditorium is http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Virtual%20Ability/54/170/23

You can view the conference schedule here: https://virtualability.org/mental-health-symposium-2026/

The livestream will be here: https://www.youtube.com/@VirtualAbilityInc/live

All are welcome. We hope you can attend!

PS- All of the educational poster sets in Healthinfo Island this month are on the topic of pain. You are welcome to visit them as well.

Fantasy Faire Opens Tomorrow

Tomorrow, one of the most popular yearly events in Second Life begins, the Fantasy Faire. This Relay for Life event is known for a number of things, the shopping, the discussions, the Literary Festival, the jail and bails (sometimes with Lindens and Moles), the Fairelands Quest, and many well-designed sims that offer a lot to see.

This year, there are a total of twenty-one sims to go about. Each of them has a unique theme. The event will go on from Thursday April 22 to Sunday May 9. So there's a lot to see. But don't hesitate to go as the time will be over before you know it. People with older computers may want to wait until late hours as the event is a popular one. But some sims will be more crowded than others.

Addition: the main entrance is at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Fairelands%20Junction/61/101/34 .

Scenes From The SLEA Celebration of The Arts

Saturday January 23 and Sunday January 24 was the First Annual International Celebration of the Arts in the Second Life Endowment of the Arts. Over the two days, there were a number of events. Among those on Thursday was the "Misfit Follies."

Sitting down in the seats, people in the audience got a HUD that helped them keep an eye on the show. Over the course of their set, the dancers appeared as anthro birds, to firey figures to dancing rolls of toilet paper on a stage made to look like a bathroom.

On Sunday January 24, among those performing that day was Chapman Zane. He was a "Live Folk/Americana/Appalachian" singer whom performed for the crowd.

Stay tuned for stories on SLEA exhibits, and further events.

Flattop Ewing and Sarah Ewing on the Veterans Tribute

Once again, the Veterans Tribute is in Second Life. This year is different from recent ones in that the two people whom were behind it early on, Flattop Ewing and Sarah Ewing, have returned to Second Life after an absence. Back in organizing the tribute, the Newser recently met up with them to talk about the annual event to honor Veterans, in both it's early days and what it's become.

Veterans Tribute And Sci-Fi Expo Return

With Halloween over, attention turns to upcoming holidays. Among these is Veterans Day. And so the annual Second Life Veterans Tribute, the thirteenth one, has returned.

The Tribute itself is non-political and serves one purpose and one purpose only and that is to honor all the men and women that have given willing of their time to protect the lives we enjoy today.

This wall consists of names submitted by those in Second Life to honor their loved ones from any branch of military service, in any country. Honoring those currently servinc, those who have served, and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country.

There will be at least one event at the Tribute, the SL Marine Corps Ball, on November 9, the day before the anniversary of the official founding of the Marine Corps.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Northern%20Lights/129/32/38

Also taking place is the Sci-Fi Expo. This sister event to the annual Sci-Fi Convention takes place every fall while the Con takes place in Spring or Summer. Taking place on the Solaris Station sim, the event raises funds for the Relay for Life, which does so in behalf of the American Cancer Society.

The kickoff for the Expo was on Saturday Nov 2. Further information can be found on the Sci-Fi Con website at https://scificonventionsl.wordpress.com/ .

Addition:  I was told after writing this that the location of the Marine Corps Ball has been moved from the Tribute grounds to Veterans Isle.

Burn2 Begins

On Friday October 19, the Burn2 event started. The largest annual art and music festival in Second Life, it is based on the Burning Man festival which takes place in the summer. The event will go on until October 28, though the builds will likely be up for a little longer. This year's theme is "I, Robot."

As usual, the center build is "The Man," a man-shaped structure of wood that will be burned near the end. Often a towering figure, or on a tall base, this year's Man is a smaller one on a large wide base. Elsewhere is "The Temple," which resembled a firey oven.

With the theme "I, Robot," artists were invited to make exhibits with robots as a theme. Some expressed hopes or fears of a world filled with intelligent robots. Others were simply amusing.

And besides the exhibits there were events by DJs in which people danced to the music. The festival will last a while, but not forever. Be sure to drop by before October 28.
