The SL20B National And Global Contests

The Second Life Birthdays have had prizes one can win for some time. But there's a chance to get a real-life prize from a contest here at the SL20B celebrations, in addition to a chance every day to get a free upgrade to Premium for a year, or maybe for life.

Visit the SL20B welcome area and look for the National and Global contest kiosks to win one of many huge prizes! Qualifying U.S. residents can  win a brand new Chevrolet Bolt EV car or a high-end ASUS computer in the physical world. Global community members can win one of several special prizes including daily giveaways of One-Year Premium Second Life Subscriptions and more!

The welcome area is in the SLB Awesome sim, a globe-shaped structure with greenery that in most hours of the day has had numbers of people. Going inside, at ground level there's a number of kiosks, and a rotating model of the grand prize for one of the two contests: a real-life electric car.

Of the two contests, one is open to US residents only, the National Sweepstakes.  The other is open to all residents of Second Life, the Global Sweepstakes.

The greater attention is on the National Sweepstakes prizes, as they're higher in value. The Grand Prize is an electric car, a Chevrolet Bolt EV, which has a "suggested retail price" of $27,495 USD. There are also five First Prizes, "Sponsor specified" laptop gaming computers described as worth about $2800 USD.

Of the Global Sweepstakes, the prizes are free upgrades to one's account. The Grand Prize is a free upgrade to Premium for one's account, for life. The First Prize is a free upgrade to Premium Plus for one year. There are also Daily Prizes for a free upgrade to Premium account for one year.

One can enter up to Wednesday July 5 for both the National and Global contests. The drawing for the Grand and First prizes will be "on or around" Thursday July 6. One can enter the draw for the Daily Prize in the Global contest once a day.

To enter, head to SLB Awesome (108/122/35).

Details for the contests are (here) and (here).

SL Renaissance Festival Opens

The Second Life Renaissance Festival is underway. The event, also known as the Ren Fest, started yesterday, September 24. There are numerous things to do there, such as shopping (notably for Medieval and Fantasy clothes, furnishings and gear), attending live and DJ music events, classes, contests, auctions, and competitions and other contests.

Dropping by the landmark area, there was a kiosk display with several outfits, from prices from 250 to 75L There were also some silent auctions done in cooperation with Linden Lab, such as an otherwise free year of Premium Plus or name change. There was in addition a kiosk for a "mega raffle" offering 45,000 Lindens worth of gift cards. I also witnessed a ceremony involving numerous people on horseback.

One of the more notable events, "Joust a Mole or Linden," takes place on Thursday September 29 at 1PM SL time.

The Ren Fest raises money in support of Making Strides, which raises money for the Relay for Life for breast cancer support and research.

Roadside Attractions: The Diners of Second Life, Part 2

Late last month, DrFran Babcock took a look at a few of Second Life's diners. Today, she's back with the second part of the record of her travels to see these tributes to these eateries of the 50s. Some are fairly new, others go back to the early days of the Grid. Some are just one of the attractions of their sim, others are the main attraction. But each has something to offer the sim-hopping traveller.

Fishiversary 2012

It is that time again; 7seas Fishiversary 2012 is open! This is the 4th anniversary of 7seas fishing and the owners & designers, Jen Shikami, Seven Shikami and Meissa Thorne have set new customs of their own on their Party Island in Osmium. They, as well as 7Seas sass, will be hosting many fishing contests during the weekend and holding live DJ parties there on Sunday.

Twenty four of the designers of custom fishing items: rods, fish, wearable items such as shirts, hats and more, have set out their little islands in the sims of Ruthenium and Iridium. The items are all free to catch ( with baited rods) and many fishers will spend the whole weekend in these three sims looking for these special items. It is a great fun weekend.

I went to a very busy contest on Friday morning. Almost 40 fishers participated in 15 minute contests with bait going to the the top 10 leaders and a special prize for 1st and 5th place. If you have time and are not a fisher you can come take a look at the builds. If you start from the following LM you can rezz a boat and take a ride through the three sims. The cute builds are worth seeing and so are some of the fishers!

Zindra Expo Starts Today

From today Friday August 26 to Sunday September 4rth, the 2011 Zindra Expo, "The Forbidden Carnival," will be taking place. Taking place over eight days and four sims, there are numerous events, some taking advantage of the adult rating of the region.

The expo is set up in the sims Girenzi, Jaraded, Tramboyn, and Distrel. To get there, head to the entrance at Distrel (194, 62, 57), where you can pick up a guide to the event.

There are many kinds of events here, from live music performances, to build contests, fashion shows, lectures and discussions, celeberty guest appearances, and of course dance parties. This being Zindra, many (but not all) the events deal in adult topics.

To get around, there are goofy cars, elephant rides, sailboats for the waterways, balloons, space shuttle rides, and "forbidden float" rides. Between events, one can pick up clothes and, er-um, toys, grab freebie clothes and a corndog, ride a ferris wheel, go on bubbles and pirate rides, go to a "fight club," and more.

And yes, the Zyndra Expo has a hotel, with the rooms having beds.

The Zyndra Expo also wanted to give a chance for businesses to advertise here. SL Newser and it's music sponsor KVXN Radio have small advertising booths here.

So for those interested in an event on the wilder side of Second Life, the Zindra Expo is worth a look. The event goes on until September 4rth.

Fishing Boring? Not So

"There's something fishy going on here." While many fads in Second Life come and go, fishing has been here to stay. Our Gemma Cleanslate, a fisher herself, takes an in-depth look at flinging the virtual rod and real into the water.
