Dark Harvest

Halloween is fast approaching, and it won't be much longer before the scary season reaches it's peak and then is gone. So Gemma Cleanslate went to look for another Halloween place to write on. She came across one named Dark Harvest. So what did she think?

It Came From Bellisseria Chat: The Scariest Trick or Treat Pumpkin

Shown in the Bellisseria community group chat. People were talking about some pumpkins in the "Trick or Treat" being a bit difficult to get to or in curious places. Traci Quandry-Marabana (Traci Quandry) would post an animation of a shark swimming around the waters one pumpkin was in, "This was the scariest."

Newser Office Getting Ready For Halloween

Halloween is less then two weeks away. And Gemma Cleanslate has been decorating the office. Dropping by, there was a dancing jack o' lantern and some fuzzy monster going about.

Something to remind us to "scare up" a good story.

Happy Halloween

Reader Submitted: Halloween on Caledon Downs

This month, spooky things are happening at Caledon. At Caledon Downs, ghosts have descended onto the land, and people are asked to help in making them go away. A mysterious train has been making the rounds, with rumors it takes passengers through the depths of Hell. And there's the pumpkin hunt. There was also a Halloween party last week as all this was starting. Cynthia Farshore, the owner of the sim, had a few things to say and sent a reader submission.

Haunted Neighborhood and Bellisseria "Trick or Treat"

Two of the Lindens' annual Halloween goodies in Bellisseria are back. One is the Haunted Neighborhood, in the Millbank sim.

The Millbank region has undergone a spooky overhaul, with numerous Linden Homes getting a haunted horror theme. Visit the many haunted houses, and see the scary sights! Take a step inside the homes while you’re at it: there are such sights to show you!

Once again, Bellisseria's spooky neighborhood is back, with all sorts of creepy sights, and sounds. A dingy trailer park has sounds of chainsaws going and screams in the background. One houseboat is full of slime and has a spooky shrine inside, and just what is that gurgling underneath the water. One house has the sounds of kids giggling, but no sign of them other than toys and a ball that seemingly is rolling by itself. There's a creepy cemetery with a freshly dug hole that when you walk past just seems like a tempting spot to rest for those tired. And one place with a "for sale" sign will collapse in a cloud of dust and debris.

Some places have traps in them, and if you're not careful a heavy bookshelf might fall on you or a blade might shoot out at you. There is a flashlight available near the official start area, though it aids your vision just a little, and sometimes being able to see things slightly better isn't always a good thing in this place. Oh, and you can also grab the balloon for a quick tour. But is letting a haunted balloon guided by a sinister-sounding ghost steer you around a good idea?

To get to the Haunted Neighborhood, head to: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Millbank/216/40/23

Also going on is the Bellisseria "Trick or Treat" event. For the third year in a row, residents will be able to go trick or treating around the neighborhoods of the Linden Home continent.

Creep or crawl over to Bellisseria this Halloween season to snag some candy and win prizes! This is an interactive event open to *everyone* where Residents living in Bellisseria can host Candy Buckets on their parcels. You don’t want to miss the paranormal partygoers and creative costumes throughout Bellisseria during this virtual Trick-or-Treat.

To play the game head over to the Haunted Neighborhood at Milibank (216.40.23) and head to the place with the three signs near the flashlight and balloon. The one on the left will get you the HUD for the game (image left) and will be all you need to get if you just want to play. For those wanting to take part, grab the pumpkin from the sign on the right. You'll need to be the owner of a Linden Home to take part. And it's not recommended you have a teleporter to a private skybox near where you set the pumpkin.

The game takes place only on the continent of Bellisseria, and all pumpkins can only have a piece taken from them only once. There are prizes for getting lots of candy, especially for those to take 200 or more.

There was a video about the Trick or Treat event by Linden Lab, featuring Magellan Linden and Punky dressing up as each other, or in Magellan's case trying to.

For more information, check out this forum post by Patch Linden. There's also a list of homes available to help trick or treaters search for candy. The one at Clean Getaway also has a huge cutout of Patch Linden where one can grab a messful of SL candies, "There are 100+ candies and other gifts inside Patch now. Touch him to get them Clean Getaway (92,158,32) The haunted house also gives candy, and there's punch, too."

Trick or treat.

Getting Ready For Halloween

The Newser office is getting ready for the spooky season. Gemma Cleanslate decorated the entrance with some pumpkins. No word yet on when the pie will be ready.

And of course we'll have more Halloween stories, and cartoons, as the month goes on.

Halloween Town

Second Life has a number of Halloween-themed places every October. One of the most familiar is "Halloween Town." The themed town of Laura Liberty's "Townies" sim, the place is more playfully spooky than scary. While the place has a lot shops, there are other things to do, such as a pumpkin decorating contest and the haunted house.

More on Halloween 2017

Halloween was a blast this year. Eventually the fun came to a close, but before we move on, one last look at some of the goings-on that happened. Even when real-life butted-in on an occasion or two, there was still much to see, from Making Strides, to Creations for Parkinson's, to the Newser office's neighborhood of the Sunweaver/Angel community.

Gifting Pumpkins at Grendel's Children

Almost lost in the Halloween rush, the classic mall Grendel's Children is offering some freebies in "Gifting Pumpkins." The pumpkins are scattered around the store, and when clicked on, you get the contents, often one of their avatars.

"We always do it, and this year it's three of us putting stuff out," Grendles' co-owner Toady Nakamura told the Newser, "so will be amazingly Grendel's!! We put out stuff and people find it ..."

Schedule for "Creepy Crawl" Event

For the third year in a row, Linden Lab has organized a event on Halloween covering a number of venues, the "Creepy Crawl." The name comes from the term "bar crawl," in which a group of people visit a number of bars in a period of time, spending a little time at each one. For this Halloween-themed event, those taking part will head to several venues from 10AM to 2PM or afterwards, the list being announced by Xiola Linden on the afternoon of October 30.

10AM to 10:30 AM: All Hallows at Moochie  - Moochie (170/200/23)

10:30 AM to 11:00 AM: Bay City's Halloween Maze - North Channel (128/128/24)

11:00 AM to 11:30 AM: Dance Island - Dance Island (131/206/27)

11:30 AM to 12:00 Noon: Scare Me Silly 2017 - Water Haven (149/136/23)

12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM: Pumpkin Smash Fight - Pumpkin Fight Arena (112/6/31)

1:00 PM to 1:30 PM: Club End of Days - End of Days (233/245/503)

1:30 PM to 2:00PM: ShenaniganS Haunted House - Leodegrance (59/72/70)

As part of the fun, there will be a costume contest with a 5000 Linden dollar prize.

One feature new to the Creepy Crawl will be a Halloween-themed version of the Linden Snowball Fight: "The Pumpkin Fight."

In the middle of all the dancing and costume contest winning, we’ll make a stop at the old snowball fight arena  - where things have taken a twist for the twisted. Shooting pumpkins has never been more fun. That’s from noon to 1 pm (SLT) at the Pumpkin Fight Arena - but you can get some practice in before then!

So be sure to stop by for some "spook-tacular" fun.

Halloween Pumpkin Maze At The Happy Vixen

The Happy Vixen beach club is getting ready for Halloween. Besides the darkness that has fallen onto the club (unless one sets their viewer to daylight), Jasmine Dawn, who made a special Halloween area in 2013 for Club Zero Gravity, has made a haunted pumpkin maze.

Highly suggested to be in mouselook while in the maze.

Turn up your speaker volume for that good surround sound effect.

And above all, have fun and enjoy the maze.

Going inside, it's a dark twisty maze full of not just wrong turns, but it looks like the carved insides of a pumpkin, and occasionally some "pumpkin guts" will be dangling down. There's also an occasional skeleton, zombie, and ghost in the maze, some still, some animated. While they can't grab you, it's still pretty unnerving to run smack into one after going around a corner.

Jasmine has also been working on another special Halloween area, which was first used last night for "The Vix's" Pokemon and Creepy vs Cute events. Accessible from the Happy Vixen, one crosses a spooky haunted woods to get to the main building, which is where the dances will be held for the rest of the month.

To head to the pumpkin maze, head to the Happy Vixen and look for the giant pumpkin. For the dance area, look for the doorway with multiple arrows.

Halloween Town

Good news for "Townies." After a few months of her land being offline, Laura Liberty's holiday themed town area is back with "Halloween Town." Here, there are a number of places to shop for costumes, avatars, decorations, and other Halloween-themed goodies. Shopping not your thing? There's also a pumpkin carving contest with Linden prizes, and a haunted house to brave, if you dare.

Halloween Town

The Elizabeth Town sim, which changes every holiday, has brought back "Halloween Town," which offers chills and thrills, in the form of spooky shops, and scary displays. The town is set onto a hill with visitors arriving on top and the road winding down, with a haunted house at the bottom.

One thing new is the giant demon hand that will give anyone who hops aboard an overhead tour of the city, though exactly where it will drop you, I haven't seen.

There's also a pumpkin carving contest, with a list of rules and a sample pumpkin that can be picked up. There are 7000 Lindens in prizes to be given out, with 1600 going to the best overall, and 1000 each to the "Most Creative," "Most Scary," and "Most Artistic," with 550L and 250L to 2nd and 3rd.

Tanja Resident (Tina) is the one to send the pumpkins to, and those interested have until October 30 to send one. "Several of the creators who sell at Halloween Town will be judging. The votes will be collected and tallied by Laura Liberty. The winner's names will be posted at Halloween Town on October 31st.
You will be contacted by Laura Liberty if you are a winner."

Halloween in Space

At 6PM yesterday on November 1, the National Space Society group held it's Halloween party.

Have a howlin' good time celebrating Halloween with the National Space Society and Friends in the Great Pumpkin Space BALLroom at Earth-Moon L1!  We have a scary good musical set on the audio stream for your dancing and listening pleasure.  You are encouraged to come dressed in spooky or spacey fashion…or better yet, a spooky space costume.  And please feel free to pass along this invitation.

The party was small but lively, taking place high above the National Space Society sim. For the occasion, the party was held in a space station module made to look like a jack o' lantern. There was pumpkin cider available to drink, or one could just "dance" by floating around in zero gravity ... unless one could fly, such as the bat avatar that showed up.

Some showed up in "costume," or avatars they do not usually wear, such as this "space werewolf" with crystal shoulderpads.

The music was mix of classic Halloween tunage, such as "Thriller" and "Monster Mash," but there were also songs with science themes sneaked in, such as Weird Al's tribute to "Jurassic Park."

The National Space Society group, the Second Life chapter of the National Space Society, holds regular meetings at 3PM every Monday.
