EOTB: "Second Life Destinations - Raglan Shire Shocktober 2020"

While many Halloween happenings go into blood n' guts horror, others prefer something more on the playfully spooky side. Among the latter is the "Shocktober" event by Raglan Shire, which was recently featured in Second Life Destinations.

We have a bonus Second Life Destinations video for you this week: let’s take a look at Raglan Shire, a community of tinies in the midst of month long Halloween festivities. No need to worry if you are what they refer to as a “biggie,” as they are welcoming to all.

As their land info states: “The original community of fun for folks of all sizes. Many different locales, events & activities for anyone seeking friendship & adventure! Whether you're dinkie, tiny sized or any size or shape, come visit & enjoy!”

Every October Raglan Shire celebrates “Shocktober” to celebrate the spooky season, but their revelry is defined not so much by blood and gore as by whimsical creativity.

Attractions include a brand new interactive Haunted House for 2020, where you can choose the level of exposure to Halloween madness: the options are cute or creepy. The Raglan Shire Ride of Horrors is back, and filled with custom rooms created by the community. Hop into that snake cart to cruise through tons of spaces brimming with unbridled creativity. Not to mention the Haunted Wooden Roller Coaster of DOOM is faster than ever before.

Musical performances and many other themed activities round out the celebration of a month that puts creative expression first, in the world of biggies and tinies alike.

For more information, check out Shocktober's entry in the Destination Guide. And of course to check things out for yourself, head to Raglan Shire's Shocktober yourself at Heron Shire (128/135/3728)

Disney Enchanted Adventures

For almost a hundred years, Disney has been producing a number of stories that captured the imaginations of kids and adults alike. Starting with Disneyland in California, it soon began opening theme parks around the world. Gemma Cleanslate came across a place in Second Life inspired by these parks: Enchanted Adventures. She decided to have a look around. So what did she find?

More Halloween Places in Second Life

It's just a few more days until Halloween, and Gemma Cleanslate has sent in what will probably be her last article on Halloween places here in Second Life. She took a look at three. The first was "The Secret Laboratories of Dr. Waxen and Prof. Grey" in Tseshkovsky. Next was the Haunted House at Creations Park. Last but not least, an old favorite that's still around, Nance Clowes' "Haunted Mansion Ride and Haunt Park."

Halloween Town

Second Life has a number of Halloween-themed places every October. One of the most familiar is "Halloween Town." The themed town of Laura Liberty's "Townies" sim, the place is more playfully spooky than scary. While the place has a lot shops, there are other things to do, such as a pumpkin decorating contest and the haunted house.

Exploring Escapade's Haunt

In her search for Halloween haunts, Deaflefacy decided to try out "Escapade's Haunted Farm and Hospital." Once arriving there, rain coming down from the sky, she decided to check the house. She found quite a few unnerving moments while exploring around, notably rats and a television set in which she found she wasn't the only one doing the watching.

Halloween Town (2015)

The place that changes it's look every holiday, Townies, is once again showing it's spooky side with "Halloween Town." Like last year, Gemma went over to take a look. The place is much as it was then, offering the same "family-friendly" scares as last year. So she offers the same review this year.

ZZ’s Madhouse

Grease Coakes recently stopped by ZZ Studios to check out what's become a yearly tradition there: their "Madhouse." This year they're offering a choice for visitors, both a "tame" path, and for brave (or foolish) a "Gory" path. Grease took a try at both, and had a few words with one of the ZZ staff about the haunt.

Halloween Town

Good news for "Townies." After a few months of her land being offline, Laura Liberty's holiday themed town area is back with "Halloween Town." Here, there are a number of places to shop for costumes, avatars, decorations, and other Halloween-themed goodies. Shopping not your thing? There's also a pumpkin carving contest with Linden prizes, and a haunted house to brave, if you dare.

A Few Halloween Haunts

Aero Pines Harvest Festival and Halloween Trail

On the lookout for Halloween Haunts, Gemma Cleanslate found some at a familiar place: Areo Pines Park. The park changes with the season, and with the fall comes the Autumn Festival. But it's also the season of spooky fun as October 31st approaches, so the staff added some chills and thrills at a place more noted for nature trails and horseback riding. Gemma took a look, and was not disappointed.

More Halloween Haunts on the Grid

Halloween is almost upon us, but there's still time to check out more spooky fun places on the Grid. Some are simple thrills and chills, but some like "The Flesh Game" and "The Mullbery Harbor" have impressive backgrounds and offer to unnerve even the most jaded of residents.

Classic "Crooked House" is Saved

A week ago, SL Newser reported on the "Crooked House" build, whose owner could no longer justify the sim payments. Unless this unusual structure found a new owner, it would vanish.

More recently, we were contacted by a Veritas Raymaker, saying there was more news. We found the house was now on the destination guide, "Visit this recreation of Robert A. Heinlein's 'Crooked House' by Seifert Surface. Explore the interconnected rooms of the house, which is modeled on a four-dimensional hypercube."

But more importantly, it now had a new home, in the Galaxy Quest sim.

Hamlet Au reportedly got in contact with the new owner, whom he declined to name, describing him only as an anonymous academic, "I do strongly believe in doing what I can to help fellow educators who are less familiar with Second Life understand the unique affordances that our world has for education. And Seifert's build illustrates several of these affordances artfully, and in a fun and intriguing way to boot."

So the Crooked House is now safe.

The “Crooked House,” a Brilliant Build in Danger of Leaving Second Life

Today, we look at a fascinating place created by the mathematical mind of Seifert Surface, the "Crooked House." Based on house transformed into a four-dimensional structure in a science fiction short, this build seemingly does the impossible of sending visitors in an endless loop of twisted rooms. Unfortunately, this great build is in danger of fading away from the Grid.
