At The Renaissance Festival (Joust a Linden Today)

The Second Life Renaissance Festival has been going on all week. In a four sim area next to American Cancer Society, various events have been taking place such as jousting (above), melee combat, and roleplay. But there's also been plenty of music events people can just drop in and dance.

Besides the DJ events, there are also live performers. There was one late last night at 9PM by Dee Freund (Dilah Halostar), the "Grand Finale" that night.

The Festival runs to Sunday October 3. Events in the final few days include jousting with a Linden or Mole today, Thurs Sept 30 from 12 to 3 PM.

On Friday October 1, if you want to get back at the Lindens for something such as the lag or teleport crashes, you'll have your chance as several Lindens and Moles will be at the pillory. The pelting with rotten tomatoes and other less than fresh produce lasts from 1 to 3 PM.

Saturday October 2 is also the day of the drawing of a raffle, the chance to create a new last name for residents to use (and the option to change your surname). The drawing will be 8:45PM SL time. Tickets cost 100L each, or 3 for 200L.

And for those looking for a game, there is the Queen's Quest. Somehow, someone stole her library, and there will be a reward for whom can get it back.

For more information, check the event's blog here: https://slrenaissancefestival.com/

Correction: We originally reported that the Lindens at the Pillory event was on Saturday Oct 2. We apologize for the error.

Governance User Group Meetings Have Ended

For some time, Linden Lab held monthly Governance User Group meetings, with Tommy and Kristin Linden as their representatives. There, residents could discuss "issues involving Governance such as in-world abuse, Abuse Reports, Forum Reports, Marketplace Reports, etc." But they are no longer happening. In a forum thread, it was asked if they were removed from Public User Group Meetings, and Tommy Linden confirmed it.

At this time there is no scheduled user groups for Governance, the majority of questions asked at the user group meetings are questions that we are just not going to be able to answer. Such as information regarding action taken, DMCA, or other Resident specific information that we will not discuss due to privacy policy, or it being outside the scope of the Governance team.

However myself, and others will always remain available to answer questions in how to file Abuse Reports, and you don't have to wait for a meeting to do that, you can message me your question and the next time I log in, I will always respond. If you wish to bring a specific incident of abuse to our attention however, as always the answer will be to file an Abuse Report.

He would later say, "Yes, at this time the user group has ended. I am exploring other options to better share useful information with all of you."

A few residents expressed their displeasure, "I'm sorry to see this.  These groups were an ideal forum for people to bring up ideas, and to get an idea of how many people were experiencing the same issues." "I went to Governance every few months, for the same reason I'd go to a city council meeting once a year or so. It's good to keep an eye on the people who think they're in charge. ... Governance was boring. That meant things were working." Someone summed it up, "... it sounds like the Users seen it as possibly usefull, but LL doesn't. And just again a step backwards in direct LL - User contacts."

Blogger Daniel Voyager would be among those who felt the meetings should have continued, "It’s a shame they are no longer happening."

Cartoon of the Day: Drinking The Koolaid

Taken at Film Threat. Among the avatars I saw there was this old "Kool-Aid Man" one. Kool-Aid itself has been around for years, with commercials on TV showing their mascot smashing through walls shouting, "Oh yeeaahh!" Unfortunately for the company, in 1978 a cult leader ordered his followers to commit suicide by drinking from a vat filled with the beverage mixed with poison. Years later, people still call blindly following a movement or ideology (especially one they don't like) "drinking the koolaid."

EOTB: Linden Lab Announces Oz Linden's Retirement Gift

 *

In February, Oz Linden retired from Linden Lab after 11 years of work. There's no record if he got a gold watch. But he did just receive a retirement gift from the Lab: a small bronze statue courtesy of Second Life artist Bryn Oh. The announcement was last Friday, September 24.

To celebrate Oz and his many contributions to the community, Linden Lab commissioned talented artist Bryn Oh to create a special bronze sculpture of his avatar as a retirement gift. Using an image of his avatar as a reference, Bryn created Oz in a very unique way -- the infamous Second Life “away” pose.

So why did Bryn Oh have Oz in that position? He would answer with this:

I felt it was nice to make Oz in "away" because maybe retirement its more of an adieu than a goodbye.  Or maybe I am just too sentimental.

The Newser first reported the news about the bronze statuette last month. It's not the first time Bryn worked with bronze. In 2017, she was making some based on her works in Second Life.

EOTB: Multi-Factor Authentication For SL Accounts

Last Week, Linden Lab offered the residents "an additional way to protect your account." It was called "Multi-Factor Authenticiation."

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is now available to all residents on their accounts. MFA is an additional step to prove your identity before gaining access to sensitive information or actions on your account. It provides an extra layer of security to supplement your username and password. Widely adopted by many products, MFA is an industry standard.

How does it work? You can learn more about MFA, find out what you’ll need to do, and activate it in the knowledge base article!

You will need to take action in order to activate MFA. It is entirely opt-in. Go to accounts.secondlife.com/mfa/status and get started!

On how it works, the Lab would go on  to say, "MFA requires an authenticator app on your mobile device which generates secret codes (called “tokens”). When you log in, Second Life connects to the authenticator app to make sure the token you provide matches the one generated by the authenticator app." To turn it on, one would need to "Install an authenticator app on your mobile device. We do not supply this app or directly support any third party app, but we have tested Google Authenticator with this feature."

The blog post would remind people to change passwords on a regular basis, and state MFA would not effect how residents log into Second Life and MFA's protection was limited to the SL login. But in the future, it may be applied to other parts of Second Life such as the Marketplace.

As was stated, to get started, clich here: https://accounts.secondlife.com/mfa/status

Game Review: Harem Hotel

Recently someone sent Nydia a game and asked her to take a look at it. The game is "Harem Hotel," and is Not Safe For Work with it's pornographic content. Unlike some other adult-rated games (perhaps most), this one has a plot, and it takes a little time for the action to start. The main character finds out his grandfather has passed away and has inherited his hotel, But it's not just any hotel. So what did Nydia think?*

Firestorm Anniversary Party This Sunday

The team behind Second Life's most popular viewer, Team Firestorm, will be celebrating it's anniversary soon: its eleventh. While the actual anniversary was earlier this month, the party is this Sunday at 11 AM. There will be music and gifts available.

We are going all out like never before this year! We’ve lined up some ‘A’ list live performers PLUS EPIC GIFTS from some of the best and biggest content creators in SL! ... These gifts will be available for everyone as this is our way of thanking the Second Life community on the whole for keeping us going. Some will be limited (collectors) items, some will be available for a longer time period.

More details will follow as we get closer to the 26th! Stay tuned for that blog post.

It is asked that avatar complexity be kept under 300,000.

Halloween Places in Second Life

It's not yet October. But already some places in Second Life are taking on some spooky appearances for Halloween. Gemma Cleanslate went around looking for some. While a number of these places cater to shoppers, she also found some cool rides, a contest, and plenty of spook-tacular sights.  Here's the first of what will be a series of articles on spooky places.

Memorial to Jessicabelle Dayafter

The reaction to the news of Jessicabelle Dayafter's passing among the Sunweavers has been sadness, often preceded by shock. She was popular with many, and people couldn't believe she was gone. In Sunweaver Eclipse, Shockwave Yareach had a Memorial Garden for Sunweavers and friends of the community whom had passed away, such as Akea Grommet and Lacy Musketeer. And now, Jessicabelle's name has been added to it, with a flame in her honor.

Stopping by, flowers had been dropped off, as well as a card with her picture: "Always and Forever Jessicabelle." The lively skunkette of the Sunweavers will never be forgotten.

Jessicabelle Dayafter Has Died

The Sunweaver/Angels community has lost a longtime member. It was announced last night that Jessicabelle Dayafter had passed away.

Some sad news. We received word that our loveable skunkette, Jessicabelle Dayafter, has passed away. The news came from an SL resident whom told us she knew her in RL. Jessica did post on Discord about a month ago she had come down with Covid.

Jessicabelle had been active in Second Life since 2007, and has been with a number of communities and groups. This includes the Sunweavers, Nydia's Angels, and the New Bastogne WW2 RP. She was noted for her anthro skunk avatar, and liked posing for pictures in outfits, such as seasonal ones for Christmas and Halloween, and appeared in many of Nydia Tungsten's calendars. She would also appear in a number of Nydia Tungsten's music videos. She also had skill as a builder, and would design and build some combat capable WW2-era aircraft for Second Life.

(click here if the video does not play)

Of her real-life family, it is known she had a sibling who died years ago, and her mother passed on a number of months ago.

Hill Top Blues Club

There's plenty of clubs in Second Life. But not everyone's always interested in the latest pop music. Sometimes one just wants to sit back and listen to some blues. One place blues fans can go is the Hill Tops Blues Club. Owned and run by real-life blues musician Remo Williams (Remo1Williams Resident), the Newser recently went by to take a look at the venue and have a few words with him.

(Click here if the video fails to play)

From SLAviationNetwork on September 12, and pointed out to the Newser by Alden Cortes. As for as everyone is aware, this is the longest automated flight in Second Life. Here, a helicopter automated by Zipperhead Wurgle traveled for a total of 322 sims. There would be one instance of the filmer crashing, and having to catch up to the helicopter. Otherwise the flight went fine.

RFL Team Sunbeamers Have Over 100,000 Lindens For Next Season

 *

The next Relay season in Second Life is still months away. But some teams have been raising money for the season ahead. Among them is the Sunbeamer team, of whom team captain Rita Mariner set up a tip jar onto the deck of Club Cutlass for anyone wanting to chip in for next year's team total. A few days ago, the total passed 100,000 Linden dollars. And the total keeps going up.

How much will be raised by the start of the season in February 2022? We'll have to wait to find out.

Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "The Past and Future of Virtual World Psychological Research and Development"

"The Past and Future of Virtual World Psychological Research and Development"

Saturday September 18

10 AM to 11 AM SL time

Second Life is underutilised as a platform for wide-ranging psychological research and community development projects. That statement was also true in 2003 when Linden Lab created the virtual world. Although other virtual world platforms may offer advantages for academic research and community impact projects, none are as robust and established as Second Life. In this presentation, I describe several funded research and development projects I have led in Second Life, including reflections on past pilot work using the platform for people with autism. I reflect on successes and ideas that were abandoned along the way and the different people I have encountered on my professional virtual journey. I  will also summarise some of the background published literature supporting a proposed research project with Science Circle, looking at communication styles in the virtual world. Questions, comments and challenges are encouraged.

Interview With Sudane Erato of The CDS And New England

With the CDS turning 14, the Newser recently had a chat with one of it's longtime residents, Sudane Erato. She was around at the experiment in democracy in Second Life since close to it's begining, and was willing to talk about it's early days, and some things that changed over time. But she's done more than just observe. She's made a number of buildings at the CDS, in addition to New England where she also resides.

Read the interview in People.

Picture of The Day: Welcome Lines

From "IQ" on Discord.  One thing practically every Second Life resident is familiar with are those annoying yellow ban lines. While some residents need them to deal with stalkers, yours truly can't help but wonder how many who use them truly need them. With this in mind, this picture from IQ was a welcome contrast: parcel lines welcoming people in.

"Check the best property lines ever! I have the coolest neighbor ... She, the creator/owner of those, put them up against a parcel that has ban lines. I love that!"

September 11 Memorials, Past and Present

Saturday September 11 was the anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks on New York City and the Pentagon, the twentith. Over the years in Second Life, the event and the fallen have been remembered in many ways at a number of memorials. Some got more attention than others, either from being large and detailed, or for the events and people they attracted. In today's article, we look back at a few of those in the past, but also a couple that were around for this anniversary.

9/11 Memorials in Second Life

It's been twenty years since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 that brought down the World Trade Center in New York City, and damaged the Pentagon in Arlington Virginia, resulting in the mass-murder of almost 3000 people. Since then, those who were children at the time of the attacks have grown up, and now there are adults whom hadn't been born yet. But people still remember, both the shock and the devastation, but also how Americans came together. And here in Second Life, there have been various memorials over the years. While some notable ones in the past are no longer around, there are still a number inworld.

One 9/11 memorial that's been around for several years is the "Always Remember" one, which has slide shows of pictures and descriptions. This year, it's in Gold Haven.

You are now at 9/11 Memorial - Always Remember, Never Forget , Gold Haven (246, 47, 1344) Welcome to the 9/11 Memorial - Always Remember, Never Forget. A Tribute to The Victims and Heroes of September 11th, 2001.

Above the Copperhead Road sim is a replica of the memorial to the passengers in the one plane that fought back against the hijackers: Flight 93, which would crash near Shanksville Pennsylvania. The main part is the "Tower of Voices," which was made in 2020. More recently, the memorial has been expanded in size to include the "Wall of Names."

In Dornoch is the "9/11 20th Anniversary Memorial."

Since 2011, the 9/11 Memorial has been placed in various locations around the Second Life world to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001. This year the memorial is placed in the region of Dornoch, Scotland. All are welcome to visit and reflect.

In the Iris sim is the "Memorial to the Victims of Terrorism."

I am  El Paso,  I am Kabul, I am Christchurch, I am London, Je suis Paris, je suis Bruxelles, Türkiye'nin duyuyorum, أنا بغداد. Stop terrorism! Pray for victims in Sri Lanka,New Zealand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, US, Syria, all over!

The Victims of Terrorism memorial would have a TP to another memorial, one not to those who died from terrorism, but those who passed away from the Coronavirus Pandemic that still claims many lives every day.

Pray for your loved ones who are ill with coronavirus. Put out a free sign and candle. Pray for health care workers. Place a memorial for those who have died of this pandemic. Places of meditation and healing nearby. May God have mercy on our souls!

Twenty years later, we still remember.

September 11 - "A Fireman's Prayer"

When I am called to duty,
whenever the flames my rage,
give me strength to save some
life whatever be their age.
Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late,
or save an old person from
the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert,
and hear the weakest shout.
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me.
To guard my every neighbor,
protect his property.
And if according to my fate
I am to lose my life,
please bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

The Gacha Ban From Two Owners' Points of View

After the end of the month, the gacha ban ordered by Linden Lab will take effect. The end of an era of Second Life shopping, the ban is being cheered by some, and cursed by others. But how will this affect the owners? The Newser reached out for answers, and two people who make money through gacha machines responded on how the ban will affect them.

The 360 Degree Snapshot Viewer

For those of you looking for pictures that cover every angle from one's position, there's a new viewer by Linden Lab: Project 360 Capture. Made available on Friday September 3, it was mentioned in the Second Life Tools and Technology blog on Tuesday September 7.

You can now take a 360-degree snapshot of a location in Second Life. Better than a simple panoramic image, the 360 snapshot covers 360 degrees in all three dimensions, allowing you to see everything both above and below your avatar as well, as though the image is projected on the inside of a sphere.

To get the viewer, download it here. As it's a Linden viewer, some used to Firestorm may have a little difficulty. To check out the special feature, click on "World" at the top and select "360 snapshot" underneath regular snapshots (one can also press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S). Upon selecting this option, you get a preview image. You have options to increase the quality of the image, and to hide any avatars within view (notably your own), then press "Create 360 image." One can click and hold on the image with the cursor, and move it around. Pressing "Save as" will create a panoramic image.

Loaded on some social media pages and websites, people may be able to interact with the image by clicking, holding, and moving around. This includes Flickr, which Alexa Linden loaded some images on.

The blog page did mention a few known issues, such as items missing from the snapshot (reccomended that one pan around and give things time to rezz), older and less powerful graphics cards may cause corrupted issues, low graphics settings in Preferences may result in a less satisfactory picture than desires. and higher detailed pictures may take a while for the viewer to make.
