The Christmas "Shop And Hop" Starts Today

For those who enjoy Christmas shopping (and are having withdrawls from Black Friday and Cyber Monday), good news. The Linden-organized Holiday Shop and Hop officially starts today.

And if you're an avid shopper, there's 16 sims with 320 merchants taking part. So you won't run out of stores soon. Each store has at least a 20% discount, sometimes more, and either a free gift for all shoppers regardless of if you're in the store's group or not, or a free gift certificate worth at least 300 Linden dillars.

The event lasts until Monday January 1. For a list of stores and their SURLs, Click Here.

Early Christmas Gift For Sunweaver Residents

For the residents of the land the Newser office makes it's land on, they got an early Christmas present. Landlady and community leader Rita Mariner gave those in her sims a month's payment on their rent.

Sunnies: For those of you who rent from me, I have repeated last year's gift.  I have gone around the sims and 'gifted" you all a free months rent.  I am pretty sure I got everyone, but if you check and I missed you, let me know.

Thank you Rita and Merry Christmas,

Bixyl Shuftan

Two "Shop and Hop" Gifts

Besides the freebies at the "Tapestry of Time" at the Second Life Birthday, there's also plenty of gifts at the stores in the "Shop and Hop." We can't write about them all. But there were a couple mildly interesting ones that yours truly thought some readers would like, a pet and a hoverboard.

(Note, the Shop and Hop ends Sunday Night)

Sunweaver Chief Rita Mariner Gives Renters One Month Free as Christmas Gift

For members of the Sunbeamer community, they had a Christmas present courtesy of their leader Rita Mariner. She went around, and paid the rent boxes on her tenants' land a month in advance. So they got a month's rent for free. "I care for my renters," she explained.

It was a welcome gift the "Sunnies" were happy to receive.

EOTB: Linden Lab Announces Oz Linden's Retirement Gift

 *

In February, Oz Linden retired from Linden Lab after 11 years of work. There's no record if he got a gold watch. But he did just receive a retirement gift from the Lab: a small bronze statue courtesy of Second Life artist Bryn Oh. The announcement was last Friday, September 24.

To celebrate Oz and his many contributions to the community, Linden Lab commissioned talented artist Bryn Oh to create a special bronze sculpture of his avatar as a retirement gift. Using an image of his avatar as a reference, Bryn created Oz in a very unique way -- the infamous Second Life “away” pose.

So why did Bryn Oh have Oz in that position? He would answer with this:

I felt it was nice to make Oz in "away" because maybe retirement its more of an adieu than a goodbye.  Or maybe I am just too sentimental.

The Newser first reported the news about the bronze statuette last month. It's not the first time Bryn worked with bronze. In 2017, she was making some based on her works in Second Life.

Firestorm Anniversary Party This Sunday

The team behind Second Life's most popular viewer, Team Firestorm, will be celebrating it's anniversary soon: its eleventh. While the actual anniversary was earlier this month, the party is this Sunday at 11 AM. There will be music and gifts available.

We are going all out like never before this year! We’ve lined up some ‘A’ list live performers PLUS EPIC GIFTS from some of the best and biggest content creators in SL! ... These gifts will be available for everyone as this is our way of thanking the Second Life community on the whole for keeping us going. Some will be limited (collectors) items, some will be available for a longer time period.

More details will follow as we get closer to the 26th! Stay tuned for that blog post.

It is asked that avatar complexity be kept under 300,000.

Artist Bryn Oh Makes Real-Life Statue of Oz Linden For Linden Lab

Second Life artis Bryn Oh has been known for various artistic displays in Second Life, such as her Rabbicorn. But she has also been doing some real life art, such as the bronze sculptures she made in 2017.  Recently in Facebook, Bryn announced she had been doing more bronze statue art. But this time, it was Linden Lab itself that requested the sculpture, in honor of Oz Linden, whom had retired in February this year after 11 years.

Several months ago I was approached by Linden Lab, the makers of the virtual world I use for my art,  to create a retirement gift for Oz Linden a long time and very well known Linden Lab employee.  They asked me to create a bronze sculpture of his avatar.

Bryn used a couple of images of Oz from the 2019 interview of him an April Linden (though mistook April as the one doing the interviewing). The resulting sculpture was 12 inches high, and was slumped forward in the style of an AFK avatar.

I created a 12 inch sculpture of Oz and it is being shipped to Linden Lab right now so yay.  When creating the pose for the sculpture I decided to make Oz in an "away" pose.   An away pose is unique to the virtual world in that when a person doesn't touch their keyboard for a while because they have gone to make tea or went to walk the dog.. their avatar will time out and be put in the "away" pose which is slumped over and asleep looking.

So why put Oz in this particular pose? Bryn would explain with the following:

I felt it was nice to make Oz in "away" because maybe retirement its more of an adieu than a goodbye.  Or maybe I am just too sentimental.

So the scuplture was made in a way that expressed a wish that Oz wasn't really gone, just having stepped away for a while to return later.

SpaceX Gifts

For space fans, there's a chance to get a rocket in Second Life. In the National Space Society group, someone posted about a new space-themed group: SpaceX.

I have great gifts from the Official SpaceX.com group I would love to give out today.
To receive them, join secondlife:///app/group/71d716fc-3bc3-159e-8c05-ddad966760fb/about
and check out the group notices.

Joining the group, it claimed to be the official SpaceX.com group in Second Life. It had a docking simulator on https://iss-sim.spacex.com . But checking the group notices, there were some gifts. One from Neuralinks that got my attention was a rezzable Falcon rocket. Once rezzed on the ground, board it, and the rocket would rise some feet in the air. Get out, and the rocket would come back down.

Other gifts include large pictures. There may be more gifts in the group in the future.

"The Mouse," The SL18B Gift Car

I've been hearing about a new little car that's being offered at the Shop and Hop for free as a gift: The Mouse. With it's small size, plus the ears and tail decorations, the little car has gotten some positive comments in some Second Life group chat. I decided to get one to see for myself. So how does it handle?

KittyCatS! Celebrates Ten Years

For fans of KittyCatS, it's the tenth anniversary of the producers of the breedable pet cats. And they have a gift for anyone whom has ever gotten a kitty, or kitty food, from them (presumably that's all that's needed to be registered in their database). They have a pair of special cats just being offered at this time, for free. One is for their tenth anniversary, and the other their ninth.

In celebration of our 10 year birthday, we created a fun little cat as a grid-wide gift!

This cat comes as an "non- identical twin" kitty with our 9th birthday kitty, who has arrived "fashionably late" to the party! Something about that 9 lives thing? Who knows! But you will be getting 2 cats to jump "out of the cake!" this year!

The cats are available at KittyCatS (131/44/26). It should be noted there was nothing in the announcement about the pets not needing food. So while the kitties are free, you'll still need to get pet food.

The free kitties are available until March 15.

SL17B Swaginator Hunt

Like other Second Life Birthday celebrations in the past few years, this one has a gift hunt by Linden Lab. Called the "Swaginator," the objective here is to go from one destination after another, collecting the gifts, or "swag," along the way.

To get the gifts, you'll need the HUD. The SL17B Swaginator HUD is at the entrance area of the Birthday grounds at SL17B Beguile (16/117/53) , a short walk from where you TP in. Finding the sign, touch it to get your LDPW - SL17B Swaginator HUD.

Wearing the HUD, you get a clue to where the first gift is, as well as a location to port to. Getting to the first spot, the Swaginator both won't be immediately in sight, but some distance away on another side of the structure next to you. The second one, the gift will be inside a place some distance away, but still on the island you're at. The third gift was the hardest for me to find, but eventually I did (it's not in a different sim). The ones afterward were easier to find.

There are a total of six gifts to grab in the SL17B Swaginator hunt. The gifts consist of three "floaties," including one that's really a raft, and three mole garden gnomes. There's no bonus for finding all six. Just the challenge of a little game, and a few items you're likely to find some use out of this simmer in Second Life.

Don't forget to check the SL17B grounds, notably the gift shop area, for some more gifts.

The SL17B Cake Hat

In the days of the resident-run Second Life Birthday celebrations, one repeated theme was the Cake Stage. Even if it didn't look a lot like a cake, the name stuck. When Linden Lab resumed full control of the event last year, the Cake Stage tradition would be among those coming to an end. But some traditions die hard, and some openly missed "The Cake." Finally, Nance Clowes stepped in by offering an unofficial SL17B cake of sorts, or rather a cake hat. After getting permission from the Moles to put it up in the gift shop area, she announced it in the Second Life Birthday group.

CAKE CAKE CAKE. The sl17b Cake is now in the Gift Area. It comes in edible form as well as  . . Cake Hats.  of course. at SL17B Mesmerize (134,221,24)

A few residents reacted with cheers and jokes. "CAKE!!!!!!!" "Let them eat cake." "The cake is a lie! ... not."

Taking a look myself, I got a copy just by clicking on it. It came already unpacked, so there was no need to go anywhere to rezz it. It did take a few minutes to completely show due to the lag in the area. But once it did, it look pretty.

So finally, fans of the Cake Stage tradition get their cake, sort of. As mentioned, you can get it at the gift shop area in the middle of the SL17B grounds.

Anniversary Gift From The Ivory Tower

Remember our "Big Ten" picture in our anniversary article last week? It was made at the Ivory Tower in Natoma, run by Avi Arrow. Avi happened to see it as it was being made, and asked what was up. Hearing the reason, she promised to send a small present. A few days later, she sent me several signs, with one going on the side of the Newser office.

Thanks again Avi

New Newser Newsstand

Gingir Ghoststar had a gift for the Newser crew: a small newspaper stand. While we already have two stands, one to put on the wall and another to set on the ground, she thought they were a little large for certain places. For now, the one we have is "no transfer." But that will probably soon change.

Christmas Gift of Kittens

Yours truly got lots of Christmas cards (thank you all who sent them), as well as a few other presents. But what stood out was a gift of kittens.

The little kitties are all at the Newser office.

The Winter Swaginator Hunt, Gift Five Location

The Winter Swaginator Hunt by Linden Lab is almost over. Last Monday, the fifth and final gift in the gift grab was placed out on the Grid, the clue leading to the Zermatt sim. But of course the SURL provided didn't take you right next to the location. But the clue does tell you it's in the center of a frozen lake and involves a log cabin. And within sight of where you land is a frozen lake with a small island in the middle. And on that island is a cabin.

As it turns out, it's a copy of the cabin that's a gift for premium accounts.  You'll find it at Zermatt (148/145/83)

Around the cabin, you'll find copies of earlier weeks gifts. Pretty clever of the moles involved. And the package for this week's gift is on the rug.

The gift package contains a snowy bench, a chopping log, a snowy fence section with one post, a snowy fence section with two posts, a section of snowy path, and three snowy trees, one that's full of snow.

And so that's the last of the gifts from the Winter Swaginator Hunt. Hope you had fun tracking them down, and Merry Christmas.
