The Land of Misfit Toys

Christmas is almost here, and we at the Newser have been busy. But, we have enough time to squeeze in one more Christmas article before Santa makes his rounds. At The River, there's a cute tribute to a classic made for TV Christmas special, "The Land of Misfit Toys." So our editor dropped by for a look.

For those wanting to celebrate the Fourth, DeniseUnicorn Toonie has some free fireworks.

The Forth of July is here! I have something for folks that are on Secondlife wanting to celebrate it. I've made some simple sparklers that you can wear in your left, right, or both hands. They're also totally free!

Happy Flag Day: The World Peace Flag Garden

Yesterday was Flag Day in the United States. In the Odaesan sim, there's a place with a lot of them, and for free. It's the World Peace Flag Garden in Odaesan (81/151/42). I found many dozens of flags, not just of the USA and Canada, but also state and provincial ones, and flags from around the world from major nations to numerous tiny ones.

The Palomma Plaza

Some residents of Second Life may remember the Free Dove, a noted freebie store that didn't have just outdated and simplistic items, but quality ones that looked good. Sadly it's owner, Palomma Casanova, passed away a year and a half ago. But the store didn't go away. Shelby Monitor, who know Palmma in real life as well as Second Life, assumed ownership and kept it running under a new name: The Palomma Plaza. Gemma decided to check the place out. She would also drop by Yosemite and write about the available campsites.

Echovets Announces New Veteran’s Gateway Sim

Almost a year ago, we wrote about the Echovets sim and community, which later ended up in Second Life Destinations. A couple days ago, it's co-President Stacy Maracas (Stacy Lee) had an announcement, shared through a notecard.

Last week we were given the first and only Veteran’s Gateway Sim.  I am currently building it as we speak, and we are searching for business owners to partake in that sim with us.

What we are attempting to do is have some free items for our Active Duty, Veterans and family members that choose to Rezz for the first time in Second Life at the EchoGroup Gateway.

I have been in SL for almost 19 years, I know, and have seen us pull together to help new residents get a great start.  I am hoping I can count on you to pull together again, with us to make it a great experience for them as they come to Second Life, and to EchoVets and not only join us in the place we all love, but also to receive the benefit of having their Rezz day on our sim where we can provide LIVE assistance with the systems in place to help them as Uniformed Service Members.

We are looking for Mesh Bodies, Hair, Skins, Clothing, and any great items you think might be a nice free item or even VERY low cost that I am willing to give them the lindens out of my pocket to obtain.

I welcome you to tour the sim, ask any questions you like, and I am also including some background and our social media links for your information.

The Gateway sim, Echo Group Welcome, is just north of the EchoVets BandofBrothers sim. While much of the place is still empty, some things have been set up, such as the beginning of an orientation course, and a freebie mall. But the mall had very little. As stated by Stacy, Echovets could use a little help in getting free or practically free items for veteran newcomers to Second Life.

In my opinion, the idea of a Gateway sim for veterans is a good one as it would encourage more to stay in Second Life.

The SL20B Tapestry of Time And Gift Area Building

At SLB Impressive at the SL20B grounds is one tall and interesting building worth checking out: The Tapestry of Time and Gift Area building.  The past few SL Birthday events have had a Tapestry in Time building, a huge circular structure of which the inner wall was divided into sections, describing each year in detail with a gift area in one place in the interior. But this year was a little different. To reflect the theme "Our Fantastic Future," the new building was a shiny, futuristic looking one.

Rather than walking around the wall to see the info and pictures of each year, one would teleport to various spots with them this time. They start at 2003, the year of Second Life's official opening, and end this year in 2023. As before, there is a gift area with numerous freebies. It is on the ground floor where people arrive at the building via teleporting.

Unless there's some last minute change, the final day the Second Life Birthday sims will be open is tomorrow, Tuesday July 11, so hurry up and head over.

*Addition: The time of the SLB sims has been extended to Sunday July 16. *

Happy Flag Day: The World Peace Flag Garden

In the United States, it is Flag Day in the United States. There are some flag stores in Second Life. But there is also a place where one can get flags, and flag-themed clothes, for free. They're at the World Peace Flag Garden in the Odaesan sim.

Free  flags of all nations.  Hand-held, modifiable for your build.  Free patriotic swim trunks, gym shorts, speedos, shirts.  Camping for world peace.  In Second Life, good people of all nations meet in friendship.

The place has flags of just about every nation in the world, including a few places not officially recognized as countries. They are grouped by continent. There's also boxes where you can get flags of American states and Canadian provinces, some American cities. You can also get the Confederate and Pride flags. Many of the country flags come with themed items of clothing, such as caps, jackets, and swimsuits.

The Flag Garden is owned by Edd Thor, who also has the Thor's Oak Christian Men's Center next door.

Wee Wonders Tiny Freebie Store

Being a tiny has it's share of challenges in Second Life. Among them being that most things were made for avatars larger than yours. But there's a place that has all sorts of things for tinies: Wee Wonders. Owned by Veloce Bertone and located in the Didean sim, there's all sorts of things for smaller folk from vehicles to furniture to animations. And the price, they're free!

Update on The Coronavirus Survival Store

Last year, Gemma Cleanslate reported on the Coronavirus Survival Store. Recently, it's owner Jadin Emerald contacted the Newser, "I tallied up the number of freebies that the store gave away in the past 14 months. ... 11,000 items given away for free!"

Some items were more popular than others. The " Anzen Bonsai Tree in Mossy Soil" was the most popular one with 788 copies given out. Other popular items included a "Soundly HUD", a set of eight Crystals, various artwork, Crystal-Infused Water Bottles, and others.

Jadin commented, the "emphasis of the store has been relaxation and stress reduction. When I opened it, we really had no clue what was happening. People were so freaked out." As for the place's future, it will soon be gone, "I'm in the process of closing down my Coronavirus Survival Store." Dropping by there, there was a sign saying, "Items are being moved to the Jadin Emerald Design Studio stores." So if you want to stop by, do so soon.

Arcadia Asylum Library in Sunweaver Estates Closing

Some sad news for the fans of the Arcadia Asylum Library in HV Community, just down the road from the Newser office. The building will soon be closing. Possibly as soon as today.

Earlier Prof. Grey (BrianL61 Landar) had announced the upcoming end of the place.

Dear Friends,

It saddens me to announce that the Sunweaver branch of the Arcadia Asylum Library and freebie center will be closing on Februrary 1st 2021.

Due to Real Life demands the $1000.00 U.S. Dollars I spend each year in world must now be diverted to home repair and maintenance.

Eventually, someone approached Prof. Grey about the upcoming close, Cynthia Farshore. Yesterday, Wednesday January 27, I met up with them at the Arcadia building and they told me about the plans they had made. Prof Gray told me, "I'm shutting down this location and have turned over control of Anilis to another curator. In real life, my father in law (85) is starting chemo and the money i would spend in Second Life is needed in real life. ... He's a tough old goat, he'll make it through this."

As for what happens to the freebie store, Cynthia informed, "I am about to rebuild the old Puddle Jumper (mall) back on the (Farshore) airfield. So one section will be the Library. The new build will have a center lobby and wings opposite each over. One side is the freebie the other various sellers. So there will be a gap but in the end the freebies will still be around." She had plans for the items other than just the Sunweaver lands, "Also I'll have to check but hopefully I can also add the freebies to the Emporium in Caledon.

Prof. Grey added, "With a selection of 9487 free items she can rotate the goodies when ever she wants and keep it fresh, so to speak. Hazelee Haller is the new owner of Anilis Library she is expanding her current land holding and will be relocating Anilis to that sim. I will be taking this location down starting tomorrow (Thursday January 28) most likely."

Eventually, Prof. Gray had to check up on his father-in-law, and had to go. And so that may have been the last time I set foot in the Sunweaver Arcadia building, of which some of Gray's builds across the road have made the Newser a few times. While the Arcadia Asylum Library may be going away, the freebies will remain as part of another store.

World Peace Flag Garden

This Fourth of July, there are a number of places one can get an American flag. But there's one that not only allows you to get one for free, but also flags of most of the nations of the world, each of the fifty United States, Canada's provinces, and some international and movement flags. It's the World Peace Flag Garden, and it offers them for free.

Free  flags of all nations.  Hand-held, modifiable for your build.  Free patriotic swim trunks, gym shorts, speedos, shirts.  Camping for world peace.  In Second Life, good people of all nations meet in friendship.

Most every nation is represented here. There's also flags for a number of territories and islands. Some places in the news in recent years, such as Kosovo and Hong Kong, are represented. Some are not recognized by all, such as Taiwan and Northern Cypress. And there's Nepal's double-triangle. There's also a box with a modifiable flag and various textures of American Indian flags. Another box has various "Pride" flags.

The place is owned by Edd Thor, whom also owns the Thor's Oak Christian Men's Center (aka Men's Recreation Center and Chapel) next to it. There, one can pick up some free clothes, skins, and jewelry.

Coronavirus Survival Store

As we all deal with the novel corona virus some are thinking of how to ease the struggle in real life and also here in Second Life. One of those who did that here is Jadyn Firehawk. I am sure many of you recognize her name as the owner of the beloved Yosemite region that closed last July

Jadyn went into her vast warehouse inventory and searched out all the calming tools she could find. She is hoping to bring some peace and quietude to those searching for it. That was her purpose in Yosemite and though it is gone the spirit lives on.

Go over and take a look at the numerous gifts you can get. I took many of the pieces for myself,

You can find all the articles displayed at her pop up store

New Arcadia Asylum Freebie Store Opens in Sunweaver Estates

The Sunweaver Estates has a new building, one that will attract the attention of many across Second Life. Arcadia Asylum has a new location, right in HV Community. The Newser had a few words with Prof. Grey (BrianL61 Landar), the builder and owner of the place, which boasts almost ten thousand freebie items.

Axtel Motors Closing, Most Vehicles Free

For auto fans, and anyone else looking for a great deal, there's been a development you'll want to here. There's a location where you can get dozens of cars for free.

In Sunweaver chat last night, Cynthia Farshore announced, "Axtel is closing down and has set several hundred vehicles to free status at their main store. LM is attached. Once they fully close, the vehicles will no longer be available so act soon if you're interested." She would then say the place was in the Osla sim. So I headed over. There were a number of vendors for various types of cars, each vendor able to hold several. There was also a sign with the following message:

Final Closing Sale

Axtel's Autos will be closing soon. All cars are free until we take down the store. We are aware some of the vendors are broken. Please try to take turns on the vendors and do not spam click them because they will break and even less people will be able to use them. Axtel will have to come back to fix these in a few days. Meantime you can visit Highflyer location to get some of the cars that are in the broken vendors. Join the Axtel's Autos group for updates and to request a link to this location. For those who use combat HUD systems in SL, this is mean to be a place for everyone to get free cars. Attacks on each other will result in freezing or a ban from the property. You will be warned only once. Please rez only Axtel vehicles here during the duration of this sale. The sim is VERY laggy due to all the scripts running. For that we apologize. We ask only axtel's vehicles be rezzed to people can test them and to keep your personal scripts down to a minimum. If you would like to advertise for your business here, please ask management first.

Lady Death (Selenia Galicia)

There were many types of cars available from early roadsters of the 30s and 40s, to classic cars of the 50s, 60s muscle cars, sports cars, even a few subcompacts and vans. There was also a "modern Batmobile" available. There was a vendor full of motorbikes. But when I looked, it was inoperable. Although the price listed was one Linden, I was refunded it after the purchase was made. So these really were free cars and bikes.

Each car comes with a HUD which one can use to keep an eye on the speed, shift gears, turn on the lights. Some cars will also drift if you hold the shift key and make a sudden turn. The instructions had a warning not to press a certain button on the HUD, but I didn't see it in the cars I tried out.

The mainland highway is next to Axtel's, so you can drive onto the road and test out the car. I found driving them to be a little tricky, especially when crossing sims. But it was smoother than jerky ten year old freebies whose scripts were designed for a much earlier Second Life. There were the sounds of the engine revving as I drove.

Of the group to join, I noticed no announcements. So it's unclear how long how long this great deal will last. Happy driving.

Fantasy Faire 2018 Begins

If there's an event in the Relay for Life in Second Life that's as loved as the Relay Weekend, it's  the Fantasy Faire. For ten days in fifteen sims, there's plenty to see, do, and experience. There will be clothes and avatars and more to buy with the money going to fund cancer research. There are events such as the "Jail and Bail", the Literary Festival, G.R.R. Martin Day, the Xanadu Roller Party, and others. There is the Fairelands Quest. And of course the well-done scenery to explore around in.

Dropping in with my alt on day one of the Faire yesterday, it was a bit glitchy at times, with my avatar occasionally turning invisible, crashing when trying to teleport, etc. "Welcome to the Relay Weekend," one guy put it, comparing it to the big event in which the sims are overwhelmed by the sheer number of avatars. But I did find some goodies, notably a freebie "The Minkie" Bento avatar that could be worn on the spot upon getting it when clicking on the vendor. There was also a "Cheer the Dragonfae" avatar for 199 Linens. And who is Cheer? He's your guide in the Fairelands Quest this year.

For those with less powerful computers, you may need to wait until late in the evening or early in the morning to enjoy the Faire better. But for Second Life enthusiasts, especially Relayers, this is an event you won't want to miss.

"Dead Space" Sci-Fi Horror Game Being Given Away

For gamers looking for a deal, Origin is offering the sci-fi horror first-person shooter game "Dead Space" for free. The only catch is downloading client software and accepting their terms of use, that and for this particular game not being too scared of half-alien zombie monsters.

In the game, the player takes on the role of Issac Clarke, who is among those sent to investigate a distress signal on what looks like an abandoned ship. Unfortunately, the ship's crew was killed and the corpses mutated into "Necromorphs," creatures whom just shooting the head won't work, but have to be completely dismembered. This game is definitely not for the faint of heart, and can be quite unnerving to even some otherwise hardened gamers. The game may scare you, it may frustrate you, but it's unlikely to be boring.

"Dead Space" was developed by EA Redwood Shores (Now Visceral Games) in 2008. It sold over two million copies in two years, and several sequels followed.

Team Firestorm's Halloween Gift Pet Wolf

Team Firestorm recently had a Halloween party. While the party may be over, the present for those stopping by is still there: a "Wild Kajaera Limited Edition Gray Wolf."

Wild Kajaera has once again graciously sponsored a gorgeous gift!  A Firestorm Gray Wolf limited edition pet! The gift will be available at the start of the event and for a period of time after that at Kajaera’s discretion.

To get the wolf, head over to Firestorm Dow Forest (224/232/3902). Click on one of the cubes with the wolf picture, and you'll receive a craft. Rez the crate in a sandbox or your home, and you'll get the wolf and a "blue flame." I'm not sure what the blue flame does, but the wolf can be rezzed on the ground. The pet can't be bread, but needs no food.
