Wedding Bells: Journey Texan And Luna Odinson

While the Relay's big thing right now is the Fantasy Faire, there are other events going on. Among them was the wedding of Journey Texan and Luna Odinson. They had decided to make a Relay fundraiser out of "will or won't they marry?" And not surprisingly, it was a landslide to tie the knot

Relayers have spoken! After a resounding L$10,700 YES to L$150 NO voting event, a dinkie-sized wedding will take place for LuCat and JoCat!

Angelika Courtois would write a few times about the romance and wedding, "Love, as a concept, does not make me swoon ... because 'love' in Second Life gets tossed around like budget confetti ..." But there were things large and small about Journey and Luna's romance that got her attention and told her this wasn't just any SL romance, "They drifted through the grid the way people do when they are not trying to impress anyone or get anywhere. And then, because apparently subtlety occasionally wins, one of them just blurted it out … 'I love you.' No build-up. No theatrical monologue. No caps lock. Just… there. .... Not the loud, neon, copy-paste version handed out like flyers on a street corner. The quiet kind. The one that sneaks in when no one is paying attention, built on time and presence and the simple act of “staying”. No grand gestures. Just: 'Here’s something different.' And the equally simple response: 'Okay.'"

The wedding took place Sunday April 26 at 2PM SL time, with Journey wearng a ball and chain as a joke.  Journey would later write, "I'm uncertain how many people attended in all, but at one point there were 52 people enjoying the festivities at the same moment. Thanks to your generosity, another L$49,800 in donations were raised for the ACS during our multi-team BYOK wedding."

There had been a few jokes about paparazzi an tabloids over the course of the first fundraiser. But some attention from media outlets that had no wish to look like tabloids was welcome. One table at the wedding was covered with articles, some were clearly props, but between those were pages from Angelika and the Newser.

"It Happened. @Luna (Hope Floaters)  & @Journey Texan Hitched. There are moments in a Grid life when you put down your sarcasm, smooth out your dress, walk through a security checkpoint, enjoy your pat-down as instructed, and simply allow yourself to feel something. This was one of those moments ..."

May you both be happy together for all time,

Cartoon of The Day: Short Stories

Taken at Club Zero Gravity. That's me in my Dinkie fox reporter avie. And well, there are days between working overtime, real-life errands, and trying to make sense of real-life news that there's very little time to write anything. So sometimes it's time for a "short" story.

Alex Radikal of Tiny Bit Radikal

With Second Life having plenty of people in human and furry avatars, it's easy for other types to get overlooked. There are merfolk, there are taurs, and then there's the smaller avatars, the tinies. But if you get a tiny avatar, where are you going to get the clothes for it? Newser reporter Netera Landar had a few words with Alex Radikal, who creates and sells outfits for the small avies. She was able to explain what went into making them, and more.

Cartoon of the Day: Why Did She Faint?

Taken at the Happy Vixen. I can think of a few reasons the girl fainted, but with the dinkie avatar nearby, one possibility came to mind.

Cartoon Of The Day: Kitty Babysitter

Taken at the Fantasy Faire. The snow leopard is Theo, the companion in this year's Fairelands Quest. One fun thing about the quest is avatars regular size, somewhat above average, and small can do them. But while they had tinies in mind as possible heroes, I don't think they thought about not just a tiny but a tiny that was another gray kitty.

Cartoon of The Day: What Would Alien Cats Abduct?

Taken at the RFL Sunbeamer Moon Dance. Feline aliens are in a number of science-fiction stories from "Star Trek" to the "Man-Kzin Wars" books, and many others. But we never see them in alien abduction claims people make in real life. Maybe any kitty from outer space would have different priorities.

"Where Mercats Go"

Second Life has a number of places that appeal to water activities, and some places that appeal to tinies. But how about both? In the Safe Waters Foundation group, I heard about such a place from JoyceTravels.

Talahoy Mercat and Dinkie Friends,

We have been busy with SO many things making Aloha Dinkie Deep a wonderful place to play and live as Mercat and Dinkie!

Dropping over with a friend, we found ourselves on a small island. Joyce and her friends greeted us, and invited us to look around and enjoy the activities. There was a surboard rezzer (and a nearby surf shack), there was a nearby tiny-sized schooner, and a tiny sailboat rezzer. I saw what looked like a sailboat race course around the small island. There was also a small dance floor for parties.

I decided to give the sailboat a try. This was a bit more detailed than some other sailboats as it took into account the wind in the virtual world. Text above the boat (not visible in the picture) showed which direction and how fast it was. It was green when the wind was directly behind you, yellow when it was to the side and slightly behind you, and red when the wind was blowing at your front. I decided to try to sail the race course. But I soon ran into trouble. Trying to get through the markers, I ended up sailing into the wind. So there wasn't anything I could do but wait. And after a few minutes of it not changing, I turned around and sailed back to the island.

I recalled reading in the age of sail, sailors could sometimes have to wait for days for favorable winds. While one wouldn't have to wait that long in Second Life, it did seem patience was needed for these sailboats. Oh well.

Wee Wonders Tiny Freebie Store

Being a tiny has it's share of challenges in Second Life. Among them being that most things were made for avatars larger than yours. But there's a place that has all sorts of things for tinies: Wee Wonders. Owned by Veloce Bertone and located in the Didean sim, there's all sorts of things for smaller folk from vehicles to furniture to animations. And the price, they're free!

RFL Team Sunbeamers Hit Platinum At Start

The Relay season is on! The Kickoff was on Saturday (more on that later), and among the teams is the Sunbeamers. The team of the Sunweaver community, the "beamers have been a top-performing team, last year making the top ten teams in terms of Lindens raised. And this season, they hit the ground running. As the team has been raising money since the end of last season, they started out at 255,050 Linden dollars in their kiosks. And so, right off the bat, the Sunbeamers were at Platinum fundraising level. And as a picture provided to the Newser showed, started out in the lead.

As the weekend went on, Grove Country Club Estates also reached Platinum and took the lead. A look at team totals shows most teams are still at Bronze level or below. This includes some yearly heavy-hitters, such as the Relay Rockers and Team ACTS. But the number of teams in Silver and beyond will quickly grow as the teams hold various events. Those holding events include the Sunbeamers with their first Moon Dance later this week.

Those wishing to donate to the Sunbeamers can use the kiosk at Club Cutlass at Sunweaver Bay (114/117/757).

And for yours truly, the season started having to own up on a certain promise right away. Five years ago, I challenged the team that if they ever reached Platinum Level fundraising, I'd go pony for a week. Since then, I've gone about in an odd look for a week when it happened. For a time, it was one I never went about in public before, the most remembered of these being the "Rita clone." But as time has gone on, I've been running low on options I've never done before, such as going pink and pantsless. So this year, I'll be a tiny Dinkie fox for a week.

The Dinkie Fox isn't sold as is, but is a mod of the Dinkie cat made by Missy (terris Graves). As I haven't installed this kind of mod before, I needed a little help from Missy herself. But as you can see, the job was done. And unlike my other tiny fox, this one can wear a jacket and pants. As before, my "out" is when obviously on Newser duty such as doing interviews. And finally on Saturday the 27th, I'll be back at my usual height.

Go Sunbeamers! Go Relay!

Fantasy Faire: "Pawlice Corruption"

Although the Fantasy Faire is over, people are still looking back at it with fond memories. As serious as cancer can be, people did try to have fun and joke at the Faire, as well as writing about it. In one article on the Faire's blog, Sonya Marmurek wrote a fun article, "Pawlice Corruption," about supposed corruption in the ranks of the dinkie police tinies.

Every Faire visitor knows that the peace within the Fairelands is guarded by the fiercely wafflesome Tiny Sheriffs Association, led by the Commandant Xavian Starsider. The Tiny Sheriffs guard and protect the Fairelands, catch and imprison the miscreants for the general justice, allowing the Faire Folk to operate as the judge and jury. The bails can be paid straight into the RFL kiosks, and should it be high enough, the Tiny Sheriffs might benevolently free the criminals and pad away in search of more waffles wrongdoers. Surprisingly the worst offenders tend to be found amongst the world builders and creators. Perhaps it is a much needed balance after all the selfless work for the greater good, or perhaps there’s something more afoot here, something much more sinister and — dare I say? — corrupt!

Stingray's Avatar Challenge

Many volunteers for the Relay for Life have done all kinds of stunts to raise funds for the effort, sometimes putting their dignity on the line. For Stingray Raymaker, he offered the person whom put the largest amount of Lindens in the Relay kiosk during Sunday's Relay Rap program the opportunity to give him an avatar makeover. So what happened? Stingray got much, much, more than he bargained for as he had to endure a "purr-fect" mess that was a "cat"astrophe for his pride.

See the segments of the group chatter and pictures of Stingray's look this week in People.
