Rez Zones For Boats in Bellisseria

Among the various activities in Second Life one can do is boating, whether it's a small sailboat or a big yacht. But finding a place to place one from your inventory isn't always easy. Fortunately, the other day in Bellisseria group chat, Abnor Mole offered a list of locations.

[11:58] Abnor Mole: If you're looking for a place to rez a big boat... here are a few:

[11:58] Abnor Mole: SSPShell Yeah (118,116,26)

Sloop John B (58,91,26)

Buffalo Springs (155,94,26

Running Bear (221,105,26)

SSPRum Tug (106,74,26)

Treeowatoor (33,28,26)

Bridle Path (208,38,26)

Itsa Fluke (124,162,26)

BelliHub (167,168,26)

Pegleg Channel (193,114,26)

Merrymount (33,54,26)

Salmon Eddy (154,129,26)

Eyrie (131,227,26)

Oukranos (126,124,26)

Port Cullis (124,129,26)

Baxby Gulf (255,53,26)

[11:58] Abnor Mole: Coral Waters (132,93,26)

Norse Auk (151,93,26)

Whiskey Bay (171,22,26) - next to Fairgrounds

Light of Aurelia (194,125,26)

Sunrise Pines (227,156,26)

Maiden Rock (81,170,26)

[12:01] Abnor Mole: Rez zones for large boats

Checking one out, I found one happened to be right over the water, and I fell in. So be prepared for a possible bath on heading over. Other residents reccomended slightly different locations, such as Freddie Harrington (Freddie Venus) "We just rezzed a big yacht here also SSPRum Tug (106,87,22)."

It should be noted that notecards of boat, car, and airplane rezzing places around the Linden Home continent are occasionally posted in the Bellisseria group.

Happy boating

"Where Mercats Go"

Second Life has a number of places that appeal to water activities, and some places that appeal to tinies. But how about both? In the Safe Waters Foundation group, I heard about such a place from JoyceTravels.

Talahoy Mercat and Dinkie Friends,

We have been busy with SO many things making Aloha Dinkie Deep a wonderful place to play and live as Mercat and Dinkie!

Dropping over with a friend, we found ourselves on a small island. Joyce and her friends greeted us, and invited us to look around and enjoy the activities. There was a surboard rezzer (and a nearby surf shack), there was a nearby tiny-sized schooner, and a tiny sailboat rezzer. I saw what looked like a sailboat race course around the small island. There was also a small dance floor for parties.

I decided to give the sailboat a try. This was a bit more detailed than some other sailboats as it took into account the wind in the virtual world. Text above the boat (not visible in the picture) showed which direction and how fast it was. It was green when the wind was directly behind you, yellow when it was to the side and slightly behind you, and red when the wind was blowing at your front. I decided to try to sail the race course. But I soon ran into trouble. Trying to get through the markers, I ended up sailing into the wind. So there wasn't anything I could do but wait. And after a few minutes of it not changing, I turned around and sailed back to the island.

I recalled reading in the age of sail, sailors could sometimes have to wait for days for favorable winds. While one wouldn't have to wait that long in Second Life, it did seem patience was needed for these sailboats. Oh well.

New Expansion in Eastern Bellisseria Allows Travel By Boat To Blake Sea

With the Second Life Birthday behind them, the Moles have gone back to working on new Linden homes on the land of Bellisseria. Among them are a number of sims just west of the southern tip of the continent of Satori. The bulk of these sims look like they're designated to hold houseboats, though the sandy area on the very northern tip are for something else and there's an empty space that for now doesn't have any sims.

But there's a little something that makes this expansion different, especially if you like boating. Two all-water sims, SSPSteady On and SSPDeep Anchor, connect these sims, and the rest of Bellisseria, to the older mainland continent.

While there was a connection several sims to the south a year ago, the way the sims were built didn't allow for boat travel further up the coast, even if ban lines weren't a problem. With this new waterway, this time boating can be done up the Satori coast, and go east to a favorite area of sailing fans: The Blake Sea.

While someone else was the first to tell the Newser about the connection, SarahKB7 Koskinen would later do so to announce an accomplishment, being the first to document sailing from Bellisseria to the Blake sea (image from Sarah).

A little something that weekend sailors and serious boaters will enjoy.

Scenes From the Belliseeria Valentine's Cruise

Last Saturday was the "Valentine's Day Love Boat  Cruise" in the Linden Home continent area of Bellisseria. Instead of taking place on an ocean liner, residents were invited to appear at a certain place, rezz their own boat, and sail down a course to the Bellisseria Fairgrounds. Among those taking part was yours truly (in a Cupid look for the occasion). So how did the cruise go?

Announcement: Fourth Annual Rosehaven Regatta

End the summer with a fun-filled day celebrating Rosehaven and it's beautiful waterways!

Saturday August 28, 2021

1-3PM SL time

Music for the day provided by Dr. Holocluck Henly

Catering provided by Flock and Feather

The plaza in Laudanum is the main landing point:
https://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Rosehaven%20Laudanum/214/194/22

All along the Laudanum docks will be the boardwalk games, rides, foods, a couple's promenade walk on eitherside, prizes ... tons of fun! In the water at the edge of the Laudanum dock will be a cordoned space for inner tube bumper car play, as well as paddle and rowboats for cruising the water.

Dress code is within the theme of Rosehaven, with late Victorian attire (including bathing suits) suggested.

ANYTHING THAT FLOATS but is NOT a boat CONTEST. Be your most creative and enter something that floats. If it's not a boat (no rowboats, steam ships, tall ships, speedboats, canoes, dinghy, etc.) and it floats, you can enter your own creation. All flotations must be able to move, or sail, along the water of the canal, adding a sailing script is allowed. Prizes awarded for the most unique! (Register with either Duchess Wilner or Oriella Charik to enter)

STEAMLAND TEAMS SCULL RACING/RACE FOR THE GOLDEN OARS TROPHY. We have two-person scull boats (in the US, this is known as crew boars) ... please form your teams! Each of the Steampands is encouraged to send two people to represent their region. Last year's Golden Oars Trophy went to Rosement, and they are prepared to defend!

Practice boats are available in the water near the lighthouse at Dragonlight Plaza in Laudanum. Oars are provided at the dock ... please take a copy of the oars and have fun practicing! The course will be laid out in the channel  ... lighthouse bridge and back.

Please let Oriella Charik know via notecard the names of your rowers. Only teams of two are accepted. Team shirts will be provided.

There will also be fireworks! See you at the Regatta!

Announcement: 3rd Annual Rosehaven Regatta!

Come enjoy a fun-filled afternoon along the waters of Laudanum in Rosehaven for a proper Regatta!
August 30th, 1-3 pm SLT, at Dragonlight Plaza, Realm of Rosehaven, hosted by Chateau Trikassi.
In addition to the rides, games, food, dancing, there will once again be the Anything that Floats but is NOT a Boat contest.  Prizes will be awarded for creativity.  Rules are simple…the craft cannot be a boat of any kind (ship, submarine, row boat, speedboat, canoe, etc)…but must be a homemade thing-a-ma-jig that floats… sailing and steering scripts are allowed in order to parade on the water.
It wouldn’t be a Regatta without crew racing!  Beginning this year, the Rosehaven Regatta will feature the Race for the Golden Oars!

Teams from around the Steamlands are invited to enter.  Each 2-person team will have the chance to compete for the coveted Golden Oars Trophy.  This trophy will be awarded to the winning team. The trophy will remain for display at the winning team’s region for one year.  The trophy will move to the next winner’s region the following year, and so on.  The trophy will be engraved each year with the winning team name.  This will be much like the America’s Cup.

Each team is comprised of two people (team must be from same region).  Should a community or estate initially sign up with several teams, heat races will be held during the week of August 24th through 28th, to determine their one team competing at the Regatta. Scull boats will be available for practice at Dragonlight Plaza in Laudanum, Rosehaven, beginning August 21st.  Please sign up via Vic Mornington or Lady Oriella Charik by no later than Sunday, August 24th.  No last-minute teams will be allowed.  It is highly recommended all teams practice with the scull boats.  The boats have a synchronized rowing anim…so you and your teammate need to work together to control the boat.
Countess Cassie Eldemar has made the Golden Oars trophy, and it’s QUITE impressive! Rora Stytwytch, from RFL ACTS team, is making each official team special racing shirts for the rowers.  If enough crew teams sign up, there will be a special pre-Regatta dinner held at Flock and Feather Tavern in Reverie, Rosehaven for the competing teams and their supporters on August 29th.  Plan on some good-natured taunting and possibly a food fight!

Doctor Holocluck Henly will provide wonderful music for the day.

Mark your calendars!  See you all at the Regatta!

Announcement: Bellisseria Cinco De Mayo Boat Parade

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the Bellisseria Parade!

The Bellisseria Relay teams are celebrating Cinco de Mayo this weekend, May 2nd-5th. The celebration will include a Boat Parade that will leave the Fairground docks at noon on May 3rd.  You are all invited to bring your boat and join the parade. We're sending early notice so you have time to decorate your boat, too. Decorate it for Relay or Cinco de Mayo or both. Please plan to join us at noon on Saturday at the Fairgrounds, we look forward to seeing you!

The plan:

The First Anniversary boat parade was so much fun that we thought we'd do it again!

We will arrive before noon at the docks at Whiskey Bay.  Rez boats there and then move over to the west into Bellisseria Bay to line up, boats pointed south.

From there we'll cruise on south in parade line (as best we can with the constraints imposed by persnickety simulators, boats, and whatever else the Fates have in store.

The parade route takes on a tour around The Pickle!  The whole trip takes about 45 minutes.

For more information, and a notecard, contact Camden McAndrews and/or join the Bellisseria Parade Group.

Rebel Yell

Gemma Cleanslate is back from exploring Second Life. Her latest article is about a new sim called Rebel Yell. If the name sounds familiar, they're a tribute group that has entertained residents for years. Now, they have a lasting place on the Grid. Gemma took a look around, and had a few things to say about the hangout.

Seduction Estates

Becky Shamen's adventures across Second Life recently took her to a 30-sim large area called "Seduction Estates." Her first impression of the place was that of a "clothing optional" tropical island where one could virtually live an upper-class lifestyle, a "Beverly Hills on the sea." So she dropped by with a bikini and a speedboat to look around. So what did she think?

Gull’s Wing Sailing Club

By Grey Lupindo

I recently had the chance to visit Gull’s Wing Sailing Club, which is Second Life’s newest private sailing community.   Located at Gull's Wing Sailing Club, JadeSnake Island (47, 205, 22), Gull’s Wing is a beautiful mix of private residences and open water.   It is one of the most serene and picturesque communities in SL.   The community spans four private sims, with shared access to three others.   Gull’s Wing is limited to sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and small motor boats.  There are no noisy airplanes allowed.   Best of all, there are over five sims of open water and no ban lines!

The creators of Gull’s Wing are well known to many Second Life residents.  Dearest Myrtle and Toby Howton operate ArchiTech Designs (AD) and Toby’s Juke Joint.  They are joined in this new venture by Avery Saxena and Bob (Unclesamoriginal), who are the Harbor Masters.  They are all dedicated to helping residents have the best possible experience in their new club.  I had some issues due to SL hiccups, but both Avery and Bob were very supportive and patient. They even gave me a personal tour on Bob’s sailboat. Bob and Avery live on-site, too, so they are personally interested in maintaining the quality of this up-scale, private club.

The landscaping, for which AD is well known, is beautiful.  Currently the site is in autumn colors, and they plan to do seasonal changes for spring and summer.  The land gently rolls and offers plenty of parks, trails, and picnic areas.  There are many coves and inlets to sail and explore, waterfalls and ponds to enjoy, and nautical themed shopping is planned.  Bob also plans to set up a 7Seas fishing area soon.

At the entrance to Gull’s Wing is a beautiful lighthouse that serves as a welcome center for visitors as well as a meeting place for residents.  Currently on the ground floor there is information about living and sailing opportunities and an office area for the Harbor Master.   You can even pick up a free Nemo sailboat here.

Inside the lighthouse there are areas for events, a bar and dance club, and a Greedy game.  My favorite area was the wrap-around deck on the second level.  I met a few of the residents here.  Surrounded by beautiful flowers, we enjoyed a glass of wine and a great view of the water while we chatted.

I learned that Gull’s Wing has three types of membership: Day Sailor, Live Aboard Sailor, and Resident Sailor.   For less than the cost of a cup of coffee in real life, a Day Sailor can rez his or her boat and sail on Gulls Wing Harbour, Owls Cove, half of JadeSnake Island, and across waters owned by ArchiTech Design, Crossworlds Sound, and into and around Toby’s Juke Joint for an entire week.

One of the best ways to get to know an area is to talk to the people who frequent it.  I was able to chat with two members of the sailing club, Jez Feral and Sydney Mantell.  Jez, who has been a Second Life resident for a year, rents a dock here.   She told me she thought she was going to have to give up sailing when she and her partner moved into a non-sailing community.   Fortunately she found out about the opening of Gull’s Wing Sailing Community.

“It was Kismet....I had just planned on packing up the sail boats,” Jez said.  “And just a day after we moved, I got notice from Toby and Dearest and Bob and Avery that they were doing this sailing sim.”  Smiling, she added, “It was perfect timing.  In fact, so well timed that I had to think it was meant to be.  I wanted to be able to continue to sail.  So we have a home elsewhere, and I can come here to sail.”

Although she says she isn’t a “serious” sailor, Jez owns a lot of sailboats.   She’s even thinking of getting another, even faster one, because she likes sailing here so much.     When I asked her what she likes best about Gull’s Wing, she said the open water that is barrier-free.

“I used to get hung up on property barriers and sim crossings on the other sailing sims,” Jez said, “so it made it really hard to let the sails out and fly.”  Although she also enjoys the ambiance here, especially the sounds of the water and the gulls, she likes the space the best.  “I really haven't seen another sim with so much room to sail, and that's a treat.”

Residents who want to be able to walk outside their door and onto their boat will want to check out the cottages.  There are over 30 cottages for rent in three sizes and price ranges and in different locales.   Residents who like quiet, private spots will want a cottage tucked away in a cove.  Second Life residents who like action and visiting with neighbors can find cottages that are set in the heart of the community.   There is something for every taste and pocketbook.  All of the cottages, however, are located on the water and include a boat dock.

Sydney Mantell invited me over to see her cottage.   She has a great view of the sunrise from her dock.   As we relaxed in her rocking chairs, we enjoyed the great view and talked about her experiences here.   She has lived in other sailing communities, but she chose to move to Gull’s Wing because of its owners.  “I knew the esthetics would be perfect - with Toby and Dearest it was guaranteed to be lovely,” she said.   She noted that she likes the New England look of the community.

“Secondly,” she said, “I love Toby's Juke Joint.”  Laughing, she added, “And I like being in the area to see who comes and goes because I'm nosy!”

Sydney also enjoys the outreach sailing program that Bob runs.  In addition to providing free boats, sailing lessons are offered to help new sailors.  “I think many people get stuck in 'just dancing',” Sydney said, “Helping others to get started in experiencing other areas of Second Life is a good thing.”  She told me the owners are recruiting tutors to help teach sailing.

We swapped some sailing stories, including some adventures on other Second Life seas.  One of the things she likes about Gull’s Wing is that its size, while huge, is also manageable.   She can enjoy sailing and its exciting adventures yet still be able to sail back to her dock at the end of the day.

Although Gull’s Wing helps newbies, it hasn’t forgotten experienced sailors.  Racing buoys are set up for regattas, and sailors have the ability to change wind settings for added challenges.    While we were sailing with Bob, Avery pointed out that the course was designed to help you become a better sailor.  “Some parts are easy,” she said, “others more challenging.”

At the end of the day, members can enjoy a jazz club, a bar, dancing, games, and other entertainment events. Toby's Juke Joint is nearby, easily accessible by water, and it has new docks for community members.

Membership in Gull’s Wing Sailing Community is limited to 200 so that the best Second Life sailing experience can be enjoyed by its residents.  Sydney offered this advice to SL residents, “Better hurry to get here - I am sure it will fill up soon!”

King Izzy's Camping Adventure

By Bixyl Shuftan

I was recently contacted by Mysti77, who invited me to take a look at her sim. She had something out of the ordinary for Second Life: a campground. Mysti was the owner of "King Izzy's Camping Adventure" at the Salty Sands sim. The place gets it's name from KingIzzy, her partner.

Accepting her teleport request, I arrived, and was surprised to hear the roar of a cougar leaping at me, which I dodged. "Hi Bix - look out!" Mysti shouted, "This wildcat is trying to bite you!" Fortunately I managed to slip away from it. Then a bear appeared near Mysti, but made no aggressive moves. "Do I need a gun or a bat?" I asked Mysti. She laughed, "That's part of the hunting contest, wildcats, bears, things like that. You could win 500L if you are the top hunter of the month. Monthly contest." Then we saw a deer appear beside us. With a grin, I remarked, "Well, guess the buck really did stop here." Mysti had a good laugh, "Hahahaha!" One joins the hunting by clicking on the stump next to the rules about it, "Any Second Life gun will do. But, if they don't have a gun or can't afford one, there is a free gun giver about the instruction sign. If they don't like guns, they can use a paintball gun." She explained there were some SL kids who like to camp, and she didn't like the idea of mixing kids with firearms.

The campground had more to offer than just hunting, "We have 4-wheelers, biking, hiking, fishing, row boats, kayaing, canoeing and even hang gliding. ... We have a beach too and paintball. ... And we offer cabins or campsite to rent for taking vacations." Renting a cabin for a week costs 250 Lindens, and you're able to place up to fifty prims worth of objects there, "All cabins are fully furnished." There are also campsites one can rent for fifteen Lindens a day, and can rezz about five prims worth of objects, "like a cooler or something small. The campsites have everything they need already." She told me one could stay at a cabin for as long as they wanted as long as they kept paying the rent.

Mysti showed me the boating area, a pier next to a beach where one could rezz a canoe, kayak, or rowboat, "and we have inner tubes and bumper boats." Besides the hunting game I encountered at the start, there was also a duck hunting area in the northwest part of the campground. One can hear the quackers before seeing them, swimming from a bush in the water. There was also a playground and picnic area, "This is a community area. Families have picnics here." There was a climbable rope "net," as well as swings, and a pile of leaves one can jump around in. Just walking through it rustles up a few stray leaves.

Mysti then took me to one of the cabins. This particular one had three main rooms, a living room with a couch and a "table" made from wooden pallets, a kitchen with a stove and refrigerator as well as a sink, and a bedroom. "We can add different beds for families," she told me, "or sleeping bags if they prefer."

Next was the largest building at the campground, their music club "Club Izzy." Mysti called it a "small club," though being in a wilderness area made it look a bit large. It was a bit dark inside as there was no party, but one could see music and band posters on the wall, as well as an American flag, plus a bar at one side where one could get a beer. Mysti explained they hadn't used the place much, and were thinking about remodeling it into an outdoor style club. It is currently, and will be after remodeling as well, available for weddings and private parties.

Before the campground, Mysti told me she and her friends were DJs. She explained her SL grandaughter Jules Fetuccio was the one who built the sim, "She did it for the family and now we decided to open it up to the public. It was started about a year ago and just finished last month." Designing the place took time, "Jules wanted to have everything perfect so people could experience a camping vacation in Second Life."

Lastly, I took a look at the "fishing hole" as Mysti called it. Mysti sat down at one of the chairs and took out a rod and reel, giggling, "I fish while I work in real life," saying she was lucky to have a job where she could do that. This wasn't the fishing game I'd seen in other places in Second Life, but something different, Fish Hunt. Mysti explained, "You earn Lindens and experience points doing this." People could start off with a free fishing rod, "You can get one off the marketplace, just look up 'Fish Hunt.' And it's always better to invest in some worms," she gestured to four crates of worms behind her, Small, Tasty, Enchanted, and Magic, "You'll catch bigger fish and get more Linden per fish."

It was there I ran into Jules. Talking to her, Jules explained it had been fun building the campground, "This sim is my first big build so it's been a work in progress. I've been with Mysti and Izzy for five years this year in their family, so it has been a labor of love for them." Building the place, the club and the overall landscaping her favorite parts. The trickiest part was the trails, "They were the hardest part for me to lay out on the sim with all the hills and turns." Another spot she enjoyed creating was a small pond and waterfall near one of the cabins for rent. Jules also took the time to iron out some bugs, some more amusing than others, "I was trying to adjust the kitchen in those little cabins and I ended up outside the window with my arms folded on the sill. I looked like a peeping tom," she chuckled, "Took me a while to figure out how that happened."

They did have some special holiday events. In October, they had the fishing hole full of zombies. Also, "everyone loved the decorations as well at Christmas. We had a huge fish hunt event that lasted for hours and many DJs providing entertainment and music."

There are some plans for the future besides remodeling the club. Jules stated, "I've been thinking about putting in some skyboxes for the renters to have their privacy. Just a place to get away for private moments, you know." "This is a family/kid friendly sim," Mysti explained, "so those things must be kept in strict privacy."

"We plan on doing more events very soon," Mysti informed, "Another fishing tourney and maybe some kind of a contest or something. ... We were thinking of having a King Izzy's Camper of the month contest." She added they still need to work out the details for it.

Jules was proud of what they had accomplished,"I think we've put in just about every recreational feature we could find for the sim also so I don't see anyone getting bored here."

So for a fun camping experience, head on over to "King Izzy's Camping Adventure."

"People need to take a break from the ordinary in their Second Lives for a while and take a vacation."

Tradewinds Yacht Club

Grey Lupindo gave a visit to a place to sail in Second Life, the Tradewinds Yacht Club. There, she stopped by a sailing museum, took a balloon tour, and did a little sailing herself. So how was her boating experience?
