Abba Tribute By Merryjest

On Friday February 20, Merryjest Starchild had a tribute performance in honor of the 70s band Abba.

Billed as the "Abba Super Trooper," it was at 5PM SL time, Merryjest singing various songs done by the band. Sometimes the stage would change shape between music tunes. And there was also some trivia about the musicians offered. There would also be a themed costume contest.

It was a unique event delivered as only Merryjest could.

Reader Submitted: "Bixyl The Newshound Fox"

By Masane Amaha  (Masane Bloodrose), using Suno

(To the tune of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer")

(Intro) You know Cronkite and Brokaw and Cooper and Blitzer, Reporters who love to drink coffee and spritzer. But do you recall... The most famous news fox of all?

(Verse 1) Bixyl Shuftan the News Fox, Has a nose for sniffing news. And if you ever see him, He’s hunting for the interviews.

(Verse 2) All of the other avatars, Wonder where he’s gonna go. They know that clever Bixyl, Is always in the festive show.

(Bridge) Then one foggy Christmas Eve, The Editor came to say: "Bixyl with your nose so bright, Go sniff out a scoop tonight!"

(Verse 3) Then how the readers loved him, As they shouted out with glee: "Bixyl Shuftan the News Fox, You'll go down in history!"

(Outro) He's sniffing out the news... Yeah, he's sniffing out the news! (Cha-cha-cha)

No Second Life Veterans Tribute This Year

For fourteen years, the Second Life Veterans Tribute was a yearly event that honored American and other veterans, both living and deceased. But unfortunately, there will not be one this year.

Eesy Spyker  (Meesoh Honi) would post the following in the Tribute's Discord group:

It is with a sad heart to report that this year's SLVT will not be able to be presented this year.  Due to a number of contributors, that make it happen each year, that are going through RL health issues, some with dire family issues/responsibilities and other factors out of our control, we have been unable to work on the tribute and present it this year.  We hope and pray for all involved and will strive to be able to once again provide a place honoring and remembering each and every one of our veterans.

We hope that you all find a place and a manner, in your own way, that you will still honor and remember our veterans.  Each of us contributors from SLVT hope that we will see you out and around SL, in various ways, honoring our veterans.

From all of us here at SL Veterans Tribute we wish all of our veterans, near and far, past and present, a happy and wonderful Veteran's Day, and thank them for the dedication and the price they have paid for us.

Hopefully another event can be organized. But the Veterans Wall, with names contributed by many residents over the years, will be unavailable to see this year.

Musical Tribute to Tom Lehrer By Merryjest

On Saturday at 3PM, performer Merryjest Starchild held a tribute to musician Tom Lehrer, who passed away on Saturday July 26. He was 97, noted for his quirky darkly comical songs composed in the 1950s and 60s. The event was done at 3PM in the Varro in Queue, "Come today for a tribute to the late, great and incorrigible Tom Lehrer!"

Merryjest would sing tunes like "Poisoning Pigeons in The Park," and "The Masochism Tango." Of "Poisoning," one feathered member of the audience joked, "As an Avian-American, I object." The audience applauded frequently.

Tom Lehrer was a professor and a mathematics teacher, but gained a following with his unique style of music that kept it's charm over the decades. In 1972, he stopped composing new songs. But what he did would continue to be played on "Dr. Demento" and be re-released over the years.

Queue is rated Adult, so not everyone may want to drop by the sim.

*Correction* We originally stated 8PM.

Memorial Concert for Solana Python

On Friday February 28, there was a memorial concert for Solana Python. She was an artist in real-life and brought her art to Second Life as well, in addition to being a live music promoter for musicians such as Bat Masters. The event was organized by Tuna Oddfellow and hosted by Wytchwhisper Sadofsky, and took place in the Elibia sim.

The Second Life music and creative community lost a cherished soul earlier this year. Solana Python, a talented artist and vibrant presence, passed away in January. In her memory, Wytchwhisper Sadofsky is hosting a special celebration of life and music—a full day of performances dedicated to Solana and the joy she brought to so many.

This event is more than a tribute—it’s a reminder that in Second Life, love, art, and friendship endure beyond time. Whether you knew Solana personally or were touched by her work and energy, we invite you to come together in her memory. Let’s celebrate the magic she left behind.

The event ran from 12 Noon to about 11PM SL time. The musicians were Tsunamijimbunn, Wytchwhisper Sadofsky, Zelator Baphomet, Snow Ogre, Dennis Mac Namara, Kris Electricteeth, Larree Quixote, Guitarhero Dougall, Velvet Quandry, LX, and Tuna Oddfellow himself. I dropped by at just after 3PM when Tuna was playing, with his avatar sporting a fishlike head, possibly humoring his real-life magician's stage name "Fish the Magish."

"It's never about how much time we have, It's what we choose to do with the 86,400 seconds we are given each day."

Burn2 Summer Burn, "Whimsy"

This weekend from Friday to Sunday, the Burn2 Summer Burn event took place. Called "Whimsy," it had a whimsical tone with many of the builds intending to be on the amusing side. It took place at Burning Man - Deep Hole.

But not all of it was whimsical. When I finally had a chance to send an alt over, there was a tribute to a late friend, "Next song is Take Five, a cover of it by King Tubby... I play it in honour of Ktadhn, who used to play Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet for every single Lamplighter procession (smile) As soon as the song would start, he would IM me and say, 'A little jazz for you' We remember you, KT!!!"

Gemma should have more on Whimsy soon,

Disney Tribute "Magicland" About to Close

Some sad news for Disney fans in Second Life. Two days ago on Tuesday April 9, the owners of Magicland Park, a tribute to Disneyland, announced the place would soon be closing.

Every good thing comes to an end and it's unfortunately time for us to say goodbye to Magicland Park. THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us over the last 15 years. This has been an amazing incredible journey that we were fortunate to be able to share with all of you. Magicland Park was a labor of love and we enjoyed this journey we were on.

It was with a heavy heart that we came to this decision, but our lives have moved us into a different direction.

We hope that you enjoyed the moments you had here with us on this amazing journey. Magicland Park's last day of operation will be Sunday, April 14, 2024. So grab your friends and family, come on down and take a last spin on the teacups or a final trip back through time on the Carousel of Progress. We have our favorite attractions and know that you do too.

Thank you for all your support and encouragement over all these years.

So there are just a few more days for visitors to come by. Besides walking around, one can check out the rides. There's a "Star Tours" attraction in which riders go on a ship supposedly piloted by R2D2. There's the "Captain EO" ride which is around a Michael Jackson music video. There's the "Carousel of Progress" which shows how households have progressed through the 20th century. And more.

Once again, the last day the park will be scheduled to be up is Sunday April 14.

Wedcot Center Is Back

Disney Epcot tribute - Celebrate the season with Nightmare Before Christmas, and Haunted Mansion Holiday! Festival of the Holidays, Spaceship Earth, Test Track, with access to mini golf.

The place is still under Trevor Sleydon and is still in the Real Dreams sim. A look at the park's group showed no announcement's in the past month, so it's safe to assume the place came back before the first of the month. The place isn't quite perfect. The "Spaceship Earth" attraction isn't quite working. But some things such as the monorail are.

The landing location is at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Real%20Dreams/42/4/105

"Tracks To Trenches"

With this being Veterans Day week, it caught the Newser's attention that the Zany Zen Railway was doing a commemoration in honor of the soldiers of the First World War, "Tracks to Trenches."

It's that time of year again when we remember those who fought for us, as always the ZZR will be remembering the men and women who served on the WW1 trench railways, delivering vital support to the front line troops. ... During this special tribute, the ZZR will transform into a front-line service, paying homage to all those who served during this critical period in history. You can choose to ride the rails in our Troop Transport, experiencing the journey as soldiers did, or join the munitions train responsible for supplying our troops on the front lines.

I dropped in on the last day the exhibit was still being set up. The volunteers were dressed looking more like they were getting ready for a wild party than a military exhibition, but they did their job well. the station had plenty of barbed wire and an observation tower next to it, with a trench and British Mark 1 tanks and Sopwith Camels across the road. At the station itself, small trains were making their rounds. I hopped on one after getting a ticket, and traveled to a couple other stations, the engineer telling any soldiers boarding, "keep your battle bowlers on."

I had a few words with Zen Swords-Galway (ZenriaCo Resident), one of the women setting up the exhibit. She told me this was the eighth year in a row the ZZR had done an exhibit like this. She enjoyed the banter from the bot engineers, "love those announcements, we got supah lucky and found a actor in SL who did a fairly good British accent."

World War One, originally called The Great War, has been overshadowed by the Second World War, particularly in American history books. But it still had a huge impact on world history. All the death and destruction was a profound shock to Western Civilization and would lead to what some called "The Age of Anxiety" which would last for some decades. Almost 20 million were killed and about as many wounded, many in the static trench warfare that characterized the fighting on the Western Front in which thousands would get killed in fighting a battle and the front line would barely change. The war toppled empires, resulted in the creation of the world's first Communist dictatorship, and although called "The war to end all wars" sadly a generation later the world would be caught up in an even greater global conflict.

The exhibit will be up until Monday November 13.

Reader Submitted: Rock Band Tribute Concert At Steelhead

Steelhead made news a few years ago with it's rebirth as an example of a community that came back. Since then, things have been somewhat quiet. But recently, some things have been happening at the place. Among them was a Scorpions band tribute concert. Fuzzball Ortega, the town's mayor, took a few pictures and sent them to the Newser with a brief account.

Disney Tribute Wedcot Center to Close

Some sad news for Disney fans in Second Life. The WEDCOT Center Park, an inworld tribute to Disney World, Disneyland, and Epcot Center, has closed. In the sim's group, owner Trevor Sleydon would say the following yesterday, Sunday October 1.

Who would’have thought opening day that WEDCOT Center Park would welcome guests for 10 years? It’s our cast and guests who made the magic, through attendance and support. A park needs attention to keep it going.  Unfortunately, I cannot do that at this time, so WEDCOT and it’s properties have closed. I hope you all have empathy and understanding and carry these 10 yrs of memories in your hearts, be kind to each other and celebrate the future, hand in hand.

Who knows what my future may be, WEDCOT came back once. We'll just have to see, but I hope that you all will join us, if we return.

WEDCOT was a theme park located in the Real Dreams Sim. It was based on the Disney theme parks with numerous rides and attractions. The Newser first wrote about WEDCOT in July 2020. Less than a year ago in December 2022, Patch Linden would hold four Christmas candlelight events there

Tribute to Wednesday Addams

On Saturday January 28, Lisa Loring, the actress best known for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in "The Addams Family" TV show in the 1960s, had died. On Monday, I saw Gil Otaared going about dressed like her, complete with "Thing" on her shoulder.

"Well, Friday I just had an idea to make a Wednesday avatar," the ringtail told me, "Then right after, Lisa Loring, the actress from the 1960s Addams Family show, died.  So it seemed fitting. Because honestly as sad as it is, it is an extremely Wednesday thing that this happened."

She told me she wouldn't mind her picture in the paper, "Make sure you get Thing's good side."
