Annual event Honor Members of Linden Department of Public Works for their works throughout the years.

BAY CITY, SL -  As in years past, Bay City will once again come together to honor the Moles of the Linden Department of Public Works with a party at the Bay City Fairgrounds.

Initially held in 2010 by the residents of Bay City, Mole Day serves as an occasion to show appreciation for the Moles and their many contributions to Bay City and the broader Second Life® Grid. Residents from all Second Life communities are welcome to attend and share in appreciation for the LDPW’s moles. 

Mole Day event will begin with a DJed set by GoSpeed of KONA Stream at 11:00 a.m. SLT. This will be followed by a performance by Agatha Nowles at noon.

“Moles” are members of The Linden Department of Public Works (LDPW). The LDPW is a program dedicated to enhancing the quality of life experienced by residents and visitors on the Linden Mainland. The LDPW comprises a team of Resident builders, scriptwriters, and other professionals who collaborate to create new content on behalf of Linden Lab and the benefit of all users. Notably, all members of the LDPW have Second Life accounts with the surname “Mole.”

The Moles are responsible for constructing the infrastructure of Second Life, including public roads and railways, coastal waterways and protected lands, and larger-scale projects such as the Linden Homes regions, premium content, and experiences.

Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab® and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest group for Residents of Bay City.

ANNUAL “MOLE DAY” CELEBRATION COMING IN FEBRUARY

Bay City Residents prepare for their fête honoring the Linden Department of Public Works

BAY CITY, SL (16th January, 2022) - Now in its 12th year, Bay City’s annual “Mole Day” event will once be held this February as a way to salute the Moles and their many contributions to Bay City and the rest of the Second Life® Grid.

Traditionally, the Mole Day event is held on or around Groundhog Day: this year, it will be held on Sunday, the 6th of February, beginning at 11:00 a.m. SLT. This year’s event will feature DJ GoSpeed of KONA stream followed by a live performance by Ve Joyy at 12:00 p.m. SLT.

The event will be held in the Bay City Fairgrounds in North Channel. The event is open to all Second Life® members who enjoy the great works of the Mole, whether they hail from Bay City, Nautilus City, Bellisseria, or anywhere else in Second Life. Of course, Moles and Lindens are also welcome to join in the festivities.

"Meet The Moles" At The SL16B Auditorium Today

From Monday to Thursday this week were the "Meet the Lindens" events at the Second Life Birthday. Today, the Moles of Linden Lab get their event at "Meet the Moles."

The Moles are builders, scripters, and content creators employed by Linden Lab to work in the Linden Department of Public Works. Meet Naughty, Abnor, Squeaky and other Moles on Friday, June 28th at 2pm SLT at a special Town Hall Q&A session at the SL16B auditorium.

Remember, if the moles see their shadows that day, it means... well, that they're running advanced lighting with shadows enabled, I guess!

Normally held on the same day as Groundhog Day, this year’s annual Mole Day will again take place at the Bay City Fairgrounds February 3rd commencing at 11:00 a.m. SLT. The event will feature DJ GoSpeed Racer of KONA stream followed by Stratus Mactavish performing live at 12:00 p.m. SLT.

Michael Linden Has Left Linden Lab

Following some questions about Michael Linden, the Newser discovered through an article by Marianne McCann published though Modem World that he had left the Lab after ore than 13 years in service. He was noted with his direction of the Department of Public Works, which has created many projects from Bay City to the recent Horizons Residential area and game. The Newser got permission from Marianne to reprint the article. One might also want to check out Hotel Adriano, Michael Linden's home in Second Life, at Shamon (65/96/29).

Over the weekend of February 11th and 12th 2017, it was noted that Michael Linden’s profile was not showing up in Second Life search, nor was he showing as a member in several groups within his profile. Many began to question if he had left Linden Lab, and – given he was known as the head of the Linden Department of Public Works – if the LDPW was being shuttered.
At the Bay City Alliance meeting on the 14th of February, a trio of LDPW staff, Shaman Linden, Squishy Mole, and Sylvan Mole, attended in part to address these concerns.

Speaking at the meeting, Sylvan Mole confirmed that Michael has indeed left Linden Lab, but was unable to give many specifics. It is assumed that he left of his own accord.

Michael Linden started with Linden Lab in the autumn of 2003 as an in-world Liaison, moving briefly to Governance in 2007 before becoming one of the heads of the LDPW with the former Blue Linden. The LDPW has expanded to include several Linden staff members and a fair number of “Moles,” as the resident contractors working on content for Second Life are known.

One of the first projects released by the LDPW under Michael was the Bay City mainland regions. Last week, Michael added a rail and boat terminal to Bay City, in the Grub Beach region. It is believed that was his last project under his Linden name.

Michael has been heavily involved in the past with vehicles as a Resident, in particular with Second Life railway projects. It is expected that he will again do so, but no longer as a member of Linden Lab’s staff. Resident and Linden alike will miss his presence within the LDPW.

As to the question of the LDPW’s future, they are most certainly still an ongoing department under Patch Linden, with Shaman, Dee, Keira, Kona, and Vitae Linden as an active part. As we’ve seen, the LDPW has just recently completed the multiple-region residential and experience-laden Horizons project, and they have several current and future projects on their plates.

Those of us who know Michael will miss his presence and guiding hand as a Linden, as well as his sense of fun. We all hope he enjoys every success wherever his career and work take him, and offer three cheers as he sets sail to pastures new.

Once a year, Bay City has a day to remember Linden Lab's lesser known workers: the moles. The event taking place in early February, this year it was held last Saturday February 4. It was a party with music, dance, and a chance for the residents to meet up with a few of the moles.

Linden Moles Create SS Galaxy Preservation Group

While Linden Lab as a whole seems to have let the cruise liner SS Galaxy, Second Life's largest build, go, it appears to be a different story among the Moles. Henning Lionheart (The Slobrador), one of the staff of the ship, informed the Newser of a "SS Galaxy Preservation Society" group. The creator of the group, not one of the staff, but Mogura Linden, one of the "moles" of the Department of Public Works.

Membership of the group is small, just five accounts, at least as of the writing of this brief. All that were visible on the group page online were other moles of the DPW.

Will this move by the moles lead to the return of the SS Galaxy? Time will tell. For now, what is certain is not everyone with "Linden" as a surname has given up on this classic build.

From Misty Mole / Calandris Pendragon (June 24, 2013) - "Some snapshots from my five years as a mole builder for Linden Lab. I was fired as a mole last week because I declined to carry on making original music for less than I'd make in McDonalds, with no discussion or negotiation allowed.

The video shows work I did for Linden Lab in the past five years. The music is by me, and I have called it Misty's Goodbye. The stills in the video include:

I'm most proud of some of the plants I made for the moles, including the olive and fig trees, rosemary and wisteria I made originally for the Sea of Fables (the olive trees were used for Linden Homes sims too) and the games I hid in Linden Transitionals and white islands sims.

There's much else I don't have photographs to illustrate, as they are on my inaccessible mole account.

I loved being Misty Mole and feeling that I was contributing to make the Grid a better place to be. I'm sad to be leaving that behind, along with many of my team mates, who will carry on the work I am leaving behind."

Press Release: Bay City's Fourth Anniversary

Four years ago, the mainland area known as Bay City joined the Second Life™ Grid. Now, on the 20th of May, 2012, Bay City will celebrate its fourth anniversary as one of the best places inworld.

Anniversary celebrations will kick off around noon SLT/PDT, with a parade lineup at the bandshell in Bay City - Harwich. The parade will make its way down Route 66 beginning at 12:30 p.m. SLT/PDT, concluding at the Bay City Fairgrounds in the North Channel region.

A live concert will kick off at 1:30 p.m. SLT/PDT at the Fairgrounds, featuring Christov Kohnke, Bluemonk Rau, and RoseDrop Rust, and including GoSpeed Racer of KONA Stream providing music leading into the event. The "Golden Tigers" aerial acrobatic team is also planning a flyover of the fairground at approximately 1:30 p.m. SLT/PDT.

The Linden Department of Public Works is also planning on opening a classic boardwalk amusement park located within the Weston and Oak Bluffs regions, in conjunction with the Bay City Anniversary.

All Residents of the Second Life grid are encouraged to participate. Posters, banners, parade float bases, and other goods are available at the Bay City Community Center, in the Daley Bay region, for those who wish to be a part of the parade, and able viewing area is provided. The music event is also open to all who desire to attend.

Burn2: "Round Two Land Rush"

This will be held on Saturday September 10th. This land rush will be open to all, without restriction. You may purchase as many plots as you like. The only condition is that we will not be adjusting plot locations to match with your possible existing plots. Think of it as a good way for an off site camp area or another playa presence location.

All plots left will be either 512 sq m or 1024 sq m sized plots. 14000L for 1024 plot .

After the completion of Two Land Rushes, any remaining plots will be sold on a case by case basis by members of the DPW authorized to sell plots and certain members of the Core Team of burn2. Please ask for assistance through the BURNING MAN 2.0 group with these sales.

Please note! Never pay anyone directly! All payments must go through the land terminal on the parcel. If you pay someone directly we will not be held liable for a refund of your land terminal fee ($4L). By participating in the Land Rush you agree to the rules and decisions made by the DPW in the execution of these rushes. You also agree to all Builder Guideline rules and policies and the Burning Man Ten Principles we follow.

Builders may have up to two assistants. The builder who owns the plot is responsible for their assistants' actions at all times, and insuring that all builders are knowledgeable of the Builder Guidelines, Policies of BURN2, Second Life Terms of Service and the Second Life Community Standards policy's.

Ahab’s Haunt

There are strange things out there in those waters between the mainland and the islands. I am lucky to live on the water’s edge in Thorstar, so we sometimes take our sail boat out on the protected waters. We just sail up the channels to see what is going on, or what new builds there are. There are several large marinas not too far away with lovely yachts and small boats.


Last time we were out on the water we saw a strange looking place on the map so headed in that direction. As we approached, we saw that it is a leviathan skeleton! There it rests in the waters of Ahab’s Haunt, white, massive and imposing. It stands about 70 m high, and I did not measure the length. I fell into the water and discovered that the bottom of the ocean there is as interesting as the skeleton, with many sunken boats and even a submarine down there.

You can sunbathe on the beach, or lie in a hammock and enjoy the quiet sunlit view. There are boat races in the area so you may see one. It all belongs to Governor Linden. I discovered that he and Silent Mole seem to have built most of the items there, and he is part of the Department of Public Works. It is definitely worth a visit.
