Ghee

For today, Netera Landar writes about a women's wear store in Second Life: Ghee. Owned by Sophia Paez Serendipity, it's noted for clothes made by Warm Clarity. By joining the store group, one gets access to a number of good outfits for practically nothing. But the place offers more than bargains. Netera found some classic styles that stood out and looked great.

Alex Radikal of Tiny Bit Radikal

With Second Life having plenty of people in human and furry avatars, it's easy for other types to get overlooked. There are merfolk, there are taurs, and then there's the smaller avatars, the tinies. But if you get a tiny avatar, where are you going to get the clothes for it? Newser reporter Netera Landar had a few words with Alex Radikal, who creates and sells outfits for the small avies. She was able to explain what went into making them, and more.

Back To A Trench

It was a couple years ago when I finally upgraded to a mesh avatar. People liked it, but a few commented they missed the trenchcoat that had been with the Luskwood and DSD avies. I wasn't sure where to look, but my friend Kitacellia found where to get one, and I did.

So my "Fox Reporter" look has a trenchcoat again.

It's been a busy day, so this is all that's going up. And tomorrow's article is going to be late. But still trying to squeeze in a little time to write.

Laura X Is Out

After months in development, Laura X has been released.

It was August in which it was announced that Maitreya announced they were coming up with a new mesh body, the Laura X. Several days ago, there was an announcement in the group they were "coming ever closer to release," and that already clothing for the new body was out "we work with the creator community to make this release the best it can be for everyone."

Finally on late Monday night, there was talk in a few groups about the body finally being available. On Tuesday, Gemma Cleanslate would confirm it was finally available at the Maitreya store. She managed to get to the sim, also named Maitreya, which was packed, "prepare for lag." Someone would comment, "It's not an update, which is why I'm being careful to not say update .. it's redeliver your purchase which now contains a new body as well. ... You don't buy if you already own, just get your previous purchase redelivered."

Ryan Schultz would message the Newser, "Everybody who has Lara can just click on the Redeliver button (under the Misc tab) on the HUD to get a redelivery, which includes both LaraX and Lara 5.3. ... I'd say that the biggest differences are in the shoulder, armpit, and upper arm area, and the hips and thighs. A lot of mid-sleeve and short-sleeve items are not going to work with LaraX, as well as bathing suits, panties or any other skimpy clothing. Full sleeve length or sleeveless outfits should work, though. Full-length pants and non-skintight skirts of any length should also work, as you can still alpha out what pokes through relatively easily." He stated the body included some underwear, and felt about half of one's outfits wouldn't work well with it, "And they finally fixed the too-high armpits."

So Maitreya fans now have their new body just in time for the Christmas shopping season.

Zan's Clothing Store

At Steelhead, and Caledon, is a store where you can get some quality Victorian-period clothing: Zan's.

Zantyago Mannonen is the owner and tailor of the store. He has spent over a decade in Second Life making suits and dresses. When mesh came to Second Life, he soon started making outfits with it. Today, he has a large variety of clothes for sale.

Most of Zan's clothing is Victorian Age fashion, great for going about a steampunk-themed community, an outfit for some parties, or if you just want to look fashionable. But not all of it is 19th Century, as he does have a line of "retro 80s" skirts, sweaters, and shirts. There's even some clothing available for those who prefer 'taur bodies. And it's not just clothes that are available. There's also some items of furniture up for sale.

Zan's has two locations. One store is in Caledon South End, where his profile states where he keeps some of his "special" items. The other, the main location, is in Steelhead Bay. One can buy inworld at those locations, or the SL Marketplace store.

Addition: I was recently told by a reliable source that the Caledon store has recently closed.

Laura X Release Date Not Announced Yet

Checking in on Bellisseria chat, one question that occasionally came up was about when the new Maitreya avatars were coming out. It was soon brought up by Gemma Cleanslate that there had been no release date given, posting a notice from the Maitreya group about it.

The most common question all day every day is about a release date for Lara X.   We do not post projected release dates. When something is ready, we release it. This means that we do not sit waiting for the date to arrive. When it's done you get it. This also means that we never have to deal with the drama of delaying a release. And we don't have to rush anything to get it good enough for release. This is how we have always done it. Nobody knows a release date.

Gemma would say the notice was sent by Gryphon Ronas, "first notice I have ever gotten in that group."

EOTB: New Senra Starter Avatars Now Availabler

When Patch Linden spoke at the SL20B a little more than a month ago, he stated that the first of the new starter avatars that were announced last year were almost ready. On Tuesday August 1, Linden Lab announced that two were ready for use by both newcomers and existing residents, the Senra avatars.

We're excited to announce the launch of our new Starter Avatars! These avatars, called Senra, are a fresh mesh take on the classic Second Life avatar, with a customizable modern and stylish look. These avatars will give new residents the opportunity to get started with a mesh body and personalize their own unique look the very first time they log in to Second Life and get a taste for the endless possibilities of avatar customization available to SL Residents.

The Senra avatars come with a variety of body shapes, skins, and hair styles. We've also created a whole new wardrobe of clothes that are specifically designed for these avatars. There are more than a billion possible combinations, so you're sure to find the perfect look.  The Senra avatars and clothing have been designed so that any avatar looks great with any clothing. Mix and match to your heart’s content!

We're also pleased to announce that we'll be providing dev kits for creators to make their own clothes for the Senra avatars. That way new and established residents alike will have plenty of ways to express themselves and create amazing new looks for the Senra avatars.

For newcomers, the avatars are now available at the start, as demonstrated by this SL University Youtube video. For existing residents, the avatars are already in inventories (those who have left their avatars inworld for a few days may need to relog), "Search for 'Senra' and you will find the full variety of clothing and bodies."

The Lab invited content creators to make clothing and other items for the avatars on a Fashion thread in the official forums, Patch Linden saying, those interested needed to read a license agreement, technical information, and fill out an application process. But the reaction in the forum thread was mixed. Some were having issues with some details in the license agreement, "This is pretty much (dead on arrival)," and there were opinions that some questions raised about the avatars at the SL20B such as the polygon count were not listened to. Others went to the Lab's defense, "The Senra system seems to be intentionally unlike the current system, which new users find to be extremely confusing and difficult to learn to use. And if they don't have strict rules about it, it will become just another body option, and very unapproachable just like the rest."

How well will the new starter avatars do? Will they get more use by residents, or be just that to most, a start that will soon be replaced after a few days? Time will tell.

Photos From The Fandom Fashion Show

The Fandom Con is over. But there's still a story or two more to write about it. Gemma Cleanslate was at the Fandom Fashion Show, but the big story was all the Lindens and Moles that were there, of which she took plenty of pictures.

Cartoon of The Day: Victoria-Victorian

Taken at Club Zero Gravity. With the variety of fashions in Second Life, sometimes you get some interesting contrasts next to one another, such as this lady wearing something skimpy next to someone in Victorian-era fashion. Eventually this punch line came to mind.

Creator of Slink Avatar Announces Closing of Stores

In what can only be described as a surprise move, the creator of the Slink avatar, Siddean Munro, announced on Saturday December 31, 2022, she was closing her stores, taking her avatar and other products off the market.

Following two stressful years of pandemic which I am sure we have all been affected by in one way or the other, I suddenly lost my mother in September of 2021, my grandmother in January of 2022 and my cat Cleo in June. I have been unwell and enduring a lot of chronic pain. I have to be very honest, my spark has dimmed a little and I no longer have the energy to pour into this business like I once did.

I’ve done a lot of soul searching over the last 18 months and have come to the very difficult decision that for my own physical and mental wellbeing, I need to move on from Second Life. I am starting something new, and can only hope it will be half as much fun and as fulfilling as my time in Second Life has been.

She would thank her customers for years of loyal business, "I cannot express what your support has truly meant to me, and I know these words will never be enough...."as well as other content creators who made products for her avatar, "you made what I do so much better! Thank you so much for your fabulous, innovative and gorgeous creations that made mine look so awesome." She announced she would no longer be answering messages made to her or her alts.

Checking her Marketplace page, it was cleared out, empty, one day before the announced closing. Same thing with her inworld store, at a sim also named "Slink." Entry was restricted to one tiny area with ban lines around it. There was a redelivery terminal, but the items for sale were out of reach.

Siddean had been creating items for sale since 2007. Her avatar shape has been around for some years, and has been described as "The Tesla for mesh bodies," applauded for it's low-lag design, which contrasted with some popular but complex and lag-inducing avatar shapes that multiplied two to three dozen times could make attending an event unreachable for those with older computers.

On the official forums, there was praise for her on a thread about her closing. "I was very surprised (and a little sad - Slink is still my favorite and most worn body), but it sounds like a change will be good for her, and I wish her the best in her new endeavors." ''I wish Siddean and her team all the best for the future. Slink has been an innovator in SL and Siddean is just a lovely person." "I'm wishing the creator all the goodness, it seems they need a whole lot of happy thoughts from all of us. They were one of the amazing trend setters in SL back in the day and I'm sure their contribution will always be remembered!" "My heart goes out to Siddean, if I'd been in her shoes with all that RL threw at her the last few years, I'd probably do the same soul-searching. I hope she finds a new venture beyond Second Life where she can put her talents to good use and get that spark back." "It seems they had an awful year, and I am not surprised to hear they are stepping away. Lets hope one day they come back with an amazing creation that knocks us all off our feet " "So sad to hear this, Siddean was one of the pioneers of mesh bodies in SL, I don't think we'd be where we are now without her.  I wish her all the best for the future." "Sad news ...15 years of visible accomplishments and a very nice goodbye with hope for the future. Rare in SL for creators it seems."

The other products around for Slink avatars will likely be around for around for a while. But with the avatar no longer for sale and the creator gone from Second Life, it is unclear if any more will be made.
