Lab Gab: Oberwolf Explains The Sale of Tilia

In a special episode of Lab Gab on Friday April 26, Strawberry Linden interviewed Oberwolf Linden, the Executive Chairman of Linden Lab, about the recent announcement that Linden Lab was selling Tilia.

So why is the Lab selling Tilia? In short, money. He explained it was "costing us millions and millions of dollars to run it." While bringing in other online places brought in some revenue, it wasn't enough to cover it's costs. So he was looking for someone to buy it, under some conditions, "The number one criteria was would they continue to support Second Life. ... That was more important than anything else I looked at. The second criteria was what could that company bring to Tilia that we could bring to Second Life." He was soon introduced to the CEO of Thunes, and in just twenty one days, "which is lightning fast and shows a few things," they were able to make a deal. It still needs Federal approval, which could take some time.

More information is in the Youtube.

Linden Lab to Sell Tilia

In a press release on Tuesday April 23, Thunes announced it was buying the Tilia virtual currency exchange service from Linden Lab.

To accelerate its growth in the United States and its presence in the fast-expanding online gaming market, Thunes, a global cross-border payments company, is proud to announce that it signed a definitive agreement to acquire Tilia LLC, an all-in-one payments platform. Tilia is licensed in 48 U.S. states and territories and offers payment solutions (acceptance and pay-outs) for online games, virtual worlds, creator economies, and in-app purchases.

Upon closing of the transaction, which is subject to regulatory approvals, Thunes’ bespoke global network to accept and pay in real-time through four billion bank accounts, three billion digital wallets and 550 Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) will become available to merchants across the United States, including current Tilia customers. Using Tilia’s technology, Thunes will be able to offer Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB and UnionPay acceptance to Thunes’ customers.

As part of the transaction, Thunes and Linden Research, Inc. (“Linden Lab”), the current majority owner of Tilia, have agreed to an exclusive five-year partnership in which, post closing, Thunes will provide payment processing and pay-outs to Linden Lab, leveraging Thunes’ global network – allowing gamers to pay, and to receive money real-time, in a more cost-efficient way and with increased transparency.

The press release quoted Thunes' CEO  Flores de Kort, “The acquisition of Tilia demonstrates our ambition in the United States. This investment will enable us to leverage Tilia’s capabilities to provide merchants with direct money movement solutions in and out of the United States. Furthermore, Tilia’s deep expertise in online gaming, virtual worlds and token-based payments will greatly accelerate our growth into that fast-growing, exciting industry.”

Linden Lab's Executive Chairman, Brad Oberwager, was quoted as saying, “Thunes is an exceptional company that directly connects nearly every payment method and market worldwide. The combination of Tilia and Thunes will give Linden Lab’s customers more payment choices, and the ability to receive pay-outs in real time, anywhere, into the wallet or bank account of their choice. It will be business as usual for our people and our customers as we bring Tilia and Thunes together.”

Tilia was quietly bought by Linden Lab in 2015, but was quiet about it's purpose until 2019 when it was announced that it would be taking over currency exchanges, and people selling Lindens to buy real-life currency would have to register with it, saying this was necessary due to new Government regulations. It would also be used to buy and sell Sansar currency, which at the time was owned by Linden Lab. Eventually Sansar would be sold, but Tilia would continue to handle it's transactions, and make deals with other virtual platforms such as Upland to handle theirs. When Linden Lab was bought by the Oberwager Group in 2020, it was believed Tilia was part of what attracted them. In 2022, Linden Lab announced JP Morgan was making a "strategic investment" in Tilia

There is a thread in the Second Life forums about the sale it Tilia (here). Linden Lab would state, "This is good news for Second Life residents and creators. More options without additional costs. We are having an open meeting on May 20 and can discuss in detail."

Firestorm Sale

So how come the Firestorm Viewer is free for people to download and use? Well, it may be free for Second Life users to download and use. But it isn't free for Jessica Lyon and Team Firestorm whom have to spend real money to keep it going. So how do they get the money? Fundraisers are one way to get it, and at the moment one is taking place: the Firestorm Sale. Gemma Cleanslate went there recently to check it out.

Second Life Land Area Rises to 25,555 Sims, Private Sim Sales Stopped Temporarily

When Linden Lab announced last May that they were could no longer guarantee a new sim to everyone who wanted to buy one, it was obvious the amount of private land areas was going up. It was just a question of how much. On January 3, Tyche Shepherd announced just how much it had. The total number of sims had increased from 24,740 to 25,555, an increase of 3.3%. For private sims, the rate of growth was a little short of twice that. They grew in number from 16,105 to 17,024, an increase of 919 or 5.7%.

Checking Tyche's chart, April and May saw huge increases in private sims compared to typical changes, with 176 in the week of April 19, 192 in the week of April 26, a huge growth of 352 on the week of May 3, and 268 on the week of May 17. But this period also saw the greatest drop, a decline of 179 on the week of May 10. These huge numbers were likely why Linden Lab made their announcement saying they couldn't guarantee a new sim for everyone. From the week of November 15 to the week of December 6, there was another period of growth averaging 80 a week. This followed the Lab's announcement that they had more sims available for sale, though still in limited numbers. But in late December, the Lab put further purchases of private sims on hold, at least for now, due to maintenance of it's land store. So the number of sims dropped in the last week.

So what will happen in 2021? Presumably once the bugs are worked out with Linden Lab's move to Amazon Cloud servers and anyone can get a private sim when they want, their numbers will continue to grow. But if glitches cause them to keep new land purchases limited, the increase will be small.

Ember Games Closing Soon, Offering Games For One Linden

While Second Life itself may not be a "game," even though it gets called one a lot out of simplicity, one can play games on it. One company behind one or more you may have played is Ember Games. Jez Ember, the owner of the company, has several games to his name. Some of these are clearly based off of real-life counterparts such as "U-Know" (Uno), "Munchman" (Pac Man), "Clued-Up" (Clue) and more.

Makers of great card, board and action games.  Check out our life sized Munchman game; our popular dice game Zilch; Sparkle, our gem puzzle; our detective board game Clued Up; and U-Know, the best uno card game in SL!

If anyone is interested in getting one of these games, or getting one for a friend, hurry up, as it was recently announced the place would soon be closing. As a parting gift, all the games had been marked down to one Linden dollar.

For those who don't know yet, Ember is closing. All boardgames cost  1 L$, which you will get right back, so it's FREE. Games like Ziilch, Uno, Skippy , Sparkle and more..

Checking by the place, the games indeed cost just one linden to get. Not only could you get one for yourself, but you could get one for a friend.

It is unclear how much longer the store will remain open, so hurry.

Bento Realistic Organs For Avatars For Sale

Remember the "Visible Woman" Beckye Burnstein a few years ago? For those who don't, She added realism to her avatar by adding bones and organs underneath. Since then, yours truly has seen a number of avatars with brains in the head, but nothing more until a friend pointed out a mutual friend had gotten internal organs. Talking to her, she pointed out a certain item on Marketplace: "Bento Realistic Female Organs 4.1."

What the product does install a set of organs and glands one would expect to see for a grown woman, a heart, lungs, intestines, a liver, and more. This includes mammary glands and ovaries and an uterus. There's an option for the brain to give out "emotional messages," which appear in local chat, "What your heart thinks is great, is great. The soul's emphasis is always right." There wasn't really a way to see the organs other than panning inside (I let the lady know, as well as getting the okay to take and publish pictures).

The item, made by a Jackhammerhp Strom, is up for sale both on Marketplace and his inworld store. Most of the reviews in Marketplace were positive, "So realistic in a creepy but awesome way." But one gave mixed reviews, "This product isn't good or bad, it's just...confusing? " Jackhammer recommended an avatar of at least 20% body fat, plus altering the avatar further if some organs end up poking out. One reviewer stated it doesn't always work on furry avatars, though it was a furry I saw with the organs.

There are a number of other items in his Marketplace store, and inworld, including Bento skeletons for avatars, and a skeleton and organ "Pregnancy System." It should be noted some of the items are clearly of an adult nature, so the page should be considered "Not Safe For Work."

So has Beckye heard of the Bento organs? Messaging her, she responded, "Of course I did, and I got it right away! Haha, finally someone made it!"

So while selling human organs in real life may get you in a lot of trouble, in Second Life, it can be done. That is, if you've got the "guts" for it, and the "heart" to always listen to your customers.
