Reader Submitted Picture: Early SLB Empty Plots

From Kamida Delec, who was going about the grounds of the Second Life Birthday on Sunday July 21, and noticed some spots that had nothing but green grass or water. When told it was the last day of the event, "Ah, that explains the empty plot I see time to time."

Announcement: Burn2 Plot Sale Open

You Guessed it! The BURN2 2018: I, Robot Plot Sale is OPEN!

The event will be held October 19-28, 2018 - mark your calendars and start making plans!

Instead of information sessions, upon purchasing your plot, you will be asked to fill out a simple form which will help us to place your camp in the best possible location on the playa. You will not be assigned your camp location or group tag until you have submitted the form - the link to that will be in the notecard included in your plot folder when you purchase your plot.

Be sure to reserve your plot today! The sims will arrive about mid-September, but plots are limited.

Plot Sizes, Prices, Prim Limits, Maximum Build Heights

512 Plot L$2,800 LI = 156, max height = 16m
1024 Plot L$5,600 LI = 312, max height = 20m
2048 Plot L$11,200 LI = 625, max height = 24m
4096 Plot L$22,400 LI = 1250, max height = 28m

Here is the SLURL to the kiosks: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Burning%20Man-%20Deep%20Hole/174/32/25.

SL14B Exhibit Plot Holders

It won't be much longer until the Second Life Fourteenth Birthday, the SL14B, takes place. There will be many dozens of exhibits there. Some are by well-known people such as Jo Yardley and Loki Elliot, others not so well known. But early on, all had to mark their plots with placeholders. Sometimes it was just the "cake slice" provided to all. More often, when I was looking around, people used an object of their own. Since I couldn't publish pictures of whole exhibits yet, here are some of the placeholders.

See the pictures in Places.

Press Release: BURN2 2015 - Carnival of Mirrors Plot Sale Continues

As we previously stated, BURN2: Carnival of Mirrors will take place October 1725, 2015. We have an update for you...

Plot Sale Continues
Get a Plot before 8 September, Get Some Extras!

If you get a plot for the upcoming October Burn event themed "Carnival of Mirrors" before the 8th of September, you may be able to have your plot customized.

What does this mean? It means you will have some flexibility with your plot, including:

1) Mirror Water. This is an option that is specific to this year's Carnival of Mirrors theme. For an example of this mirror water feature, see the image below.

2) Custom Shaped Plot.We can parcel your plot with boundaries to your (within reason)
specifications. The plot size will not change in terms of square meters, but the plot shape can vary from the usual square or rectangular configuration.

3) Modestly Increased Height Limits. If you get a 512sqm, 1024sqm or 2048sqm plot before the 8th of September, your height limit will be a bit higher than if you get it after the 8th.

You will be required to attend at least ONE short and simple information session to ensure full understanding of the builder guidelines, play aesthetics, and Ten Principles of Burning Man, all of which will be in force for the October event. Once attended you will receive your builder tags and be able to build on your plot once it is placed.

So, what's holding you back? The plots even cost LESS than they have in the past two years! This is a unique opportunity to do something a bit different this year while still keeping within the traditional playa aesthetics.

After you reserve your plot, wander over to the Center Camp tent and watch the live stream of Burning Man we've got going on the screen there. That event officially begins on the 30th of August, but you can see the flow of traffic through Gerlach in these pre-event days.

More information, including plot sizes and prices, is available on our website at http://www.burn2.org .

Press Release: Burn2 2015 - Carnival of Mirrors

This year's theme is about mirrors and masks, mazes, and merger. It will be a kind of magic show that takes the form of an old-fashioned carnival. This Carnival of Mirrors asks three essential questions: within our media-saturated world, where products and people, consumption and communion morph into an endlessly diverting spectacle, who is the trickster, who is being tricked, and how might we discover who we really are?

Classic carnivals, as theaters of illusion, upheld a very strict dividing line that separated carnies, cast as showmen, from members of a naive public who were labels chumps and suckers, marks and rubes. Our carnival, however, will perform an even more subversive trick - its motto is Include the Rube. The wall dividing the observer from the observed will disappear, as by an act of magic; through the alchemy of interaction, everyone at once can be the carny and the fool.

With great glee and inspired excitement, we announce the upcoming BRN2: Carnival of Mirrors. The event will take place October 17-25, 2015, culminating in the Burning of the Man of the 24th, and the temple Burn on the 25th. Going into this season of preparation, the annual plot sale opens, along with the Plot Lottery! And prices for the plot sale are LOWER!

Get all the information you need about the Plot Lottery and Jurried Art Camp applications by going to http://www.burn2.org and finding the link to the desired application form in the menu at left under "Carnival of Mirrors." Read all the information on the form, including the guidelines and Ten Principles before you submit your application. Builder guidelines are available at http://www.burn2.org/Builderguidelines - playa aesthetics mirroring the Black Rock Desert are in effect for this event.

You can purchase a plot for Burn2 at the kiosks on the Playa. In the spirit of the theme, your receipt will be in the form of a wearable mask. Prices are as follows, and we are happy to note the prices are lower than last year:

L$2500 = 512sqm, 117 LI
L$5000 = 1024sqm, 234 LI
L$10000 = 2048sqm, 468 LI
L$20000 - 4096sqm, 936 LI

Think about the mirrors, masks, mazes, and mergers, let the word "Carnival evoke inspiration in your creative mind, then come, participate in this fiercely fun and fiery fiesta!

"Something Amazing" And Other SLB 12 Exhibits

Across the Second Life Birthday grounds, there are many exhibits. Some stand out, due to detail, interactivity, or both. Bixyl Shuftan took a closer look at some which were recommended by others. In the case of one, "Something Amazing," the builder Kenny Luckless was interviewed about his exhibit.

Press Release: Burn2 Burnal Equinox March 27-29

Burn2 is pleased to announce the upcoming event Burnal Equinox, which takes place March 27 through 29th this year. The Theme is "Balance."

Equinox is the time when the day and night are of equal length. It is also the start of both Spring (Northern Hemisphere) and Autumn (Southern Hemisphere). In the virtual world, we can mix all things together, so we can have bats flying down to sip the nectar from the new spring flowers in the daytime, or autumn leaves transforming into buterflies at night. Our only limitation is our imagination.

This event is a short but bright and exciting burst on the calendar. It will feature new and experienced artists, live musicians, DJs, and performers all working to an interesting theme. All are welcome to join the celebration.

Artists and builders are invited to sign up for a plot and build to the theme. DJs, live musicians, and performers are also welcome to apply to play during the event weekend.

Please let us know when you have included us in your publications as we link back to online TV, magazine and blog posts at Http://www.burn2.org/media_coverage. We would love to include you! Just email a link to your content to communications@burn2.org, and we'll include it.

Press Release: "Burn2 2014 Caravansary" October 18-26

This year, we will create a caravansary that occupies the crossroads of a dreamland: a bazaar of the bizarre, wherein treasures of every sort, from every land and age, flow in and out to be flaunted, lost, exploited and discovered. This is not a tourist destination, but a home for travelers who come here bearing gifts. Amid the twisting and the turnings of its souk, participants will come upon an inexhaustible array of teeming goods and unexpected services.
Anyone may pose as 'merchant' here, and anyone may play a 'customer', but nothing in this strange emporium shall have a purchase price — no quid, no pro, no quo — no trade at all will be allowed in this ambiguous arcade. According to a rule of desert hospitality, the only thing of value in this 'marketplace' will be one's interaction with a fellow being.
Our desert inn will also be a scene of luxury and cultivated ease. An apron of fine carpets will spread out beneath the shade of portals that surround a courtyard. Here, travel-wearied pilgrims may relax, inventing pastimes as they watch the whirling world go by.
Workers of great wonders will be welcome here; fakirs, dancers, sadhus, seers and potentates will throng through this performance space, like figures that adorn the fabric of a silk brocade. The sounds of finger cymbals, chimes, and music of acoustic instruments will fill the air.
By night, bathed in the lambent glow of lanterns gently swaying overhead, fire spinners will perform around the Burning Man. This year's Man will rise directly from the desert floor and tower many stories high. Its massive torso will evoke a tiered pagoda; its ornate head will be a lamp that welcomes people home.
Bystanders become participants; participants share in the burning, spinning cacophony on the virtual Playa.

Plot Sales for BURN2’s CARAVANSARY are OPEN!

Plot sales are open now for the upcoming BURN2 Caravansary event!
Purchase a plot for yourself (only ONE per person, not per avatar/alt). If you’re feeling some Burner spirit, purchase one as a gift for a fellow Burner. If you cannot afford the cost of one, you can apply for a 512 sqm plot (117 prims) in the Plottery. Juried theme plot applications are also open.
For more information, come to the Playa and find the big tent with the kiosks inside. They look like the picture above. You’ll find them here: Plot kiosks in Second Life

SL11B: Plot Holders

Gemma Cleanslate has been busy with her Exhibitor Assistant duties at the Second Live Eleventh Birthday (SL11B) sims, so her time for reporting has been a bit short. While she's come across a number of builds at the SL11B plots, it's still too early for pictures. But she has seen no shortage of plot holders, those little things builders leave to claim a plot while they work on the exhibit. So she took a few pictures.

See Gemma's pictures in Extra.

Second Life 11th Birthday Preparations

The SL11B is fast approaching though it seems far away yet.

The roads are down on all the sims. Stages are in progress. The auditorium is awaiting programs. The builders are waiting to enter. Yesterday I went to my training session for Exhibitor Assistant. Diana Renoir gave the training again this year. This will be my third year as an EA as we are called. Our job is to help the builders get settled on their plots and have the “tools” they need to do their work in the sims. We give them a slice of cake which contains all their information to make life easier for the next few weeks before the opening of the sims to the public.

The builders are most grateful to the EA’s throughout the next weeks because we can set their streams on the plots, put a landing point for them and a texture of identification of their plot. I took some pictures at the training session so you could see some of the people you may meet on the sims . I enjoy being in the sims during the building to witness the growth of the installations .

One thing I know, although I will spend time there in the next month before and during the event I will never get to see everything there is to see. The past two years have proven that to me. It is impossible!! There will be so much to explore on all those 11  sims. So I am warning you now to save more than one day to come during the public weeks. You really don’t want to miss all the sights, and freebies, and parties do you?

Keep an eye on the blog and check out those great videos and get ready for fun!

Editor's Note: Today (May 30th) is the day the SL11B sims open to exhibitors. Stay tuned for sneak peeks of the builds (exhibitors contact us if you want your build in the paper).

BURN2 2013 Juried Plots Application Process

Propose an art project, camp or performance or group for a chance to win a free plot at BURN2 in October, 2013!

Press Contact: Mia Quinote

communications@burn2.org

BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man project and community into the world of Second

Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man Regional and is the only virtual world Regional

out of more than 100 real world Regional groups. We bring Burning Man culture and

community to the virtual world of Second Life.

The annual BURN2 festival showcases a lot of virtual art! Some participants create VERY

LARGE ART INSTALLATIONS, while others create interactive THEME CAMPS.

Every year, BURN2 gives away free plots for juried art installations and theme camps. These

juried plots are larger than the randomly selected lottery plots which were given in the

“Plottery.”

Anyone can apply for a Juried Plot, from newbie builders, to the seasoned, well known

artists. The Art Team jury will select the winners, judging applicants on artistic merit and build

interactiveness.

People can apply for a Juried Plot by filling out the simple application located at the BURN2

website: http://burn2.org/juried_camp_form

The theme this year is "CARGO CULT"; however there is no requirement that artists create to

the theme. Learn more about the theme here:http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm13_theme.html
Some important dates for the Juried Camp Application Process include:

Applications for juried plots open: 7/16/13

Applications for juried plots close: 8/16/13

Juried selections announced: 9/1/13

Building starts: 9/17/13

Building/placement ends: 10/12/13

BURN2 Cargo Cult opens: 10/19/13

BURN2 Cargo Cult ends: 10/27/13

All builders and artists agree to comply with the Ten Principals of Burning Man and BURN2

(http://www.burn2.org/tenprinciples) and the BURN2 Builder Guidelines

(http://www.burn2.org/Builderguidelines). All builders and artists agree to comply with Linden

Lab’'s Terms of Service and Community Standards.

We encourage the press to provide this information to the public, and we hope to see lots of

wonderful art on the BURN2 playa this year!

Relay For Life: After the Walk

Bixyl Shuftan continues his coverage of the Relay For Life sims. Even with The Walk over, there are still things to see and do. The camps and builds offered plenty to see. And then there were the Relayers themselves, who were determined to have fun while the sims were still up.

SL Video: "The Drax Files - Episode 8: MadPea Games"

(Click Here if the video fails to load)

In the latest of Draxtor Despres' interviews, he goes to Kiana Writer of Madpea Games. This time, it's Draxtor who is filmed in-person and Kiana appears just as her avatar, "it's time for a little role-reversal."

"The debate if Second Life is a game or not is alive and well at least since on NBC's The Office [2007] Dwight Schrute rejects a narrow definition of the vast virtual world in which he "plays" a paper salesman.

Meanwhile, Finland based design company MadPea Games has not been paying much attention to this back and forth, instead churning out complex immersive adventure games and game-based learning concepts within Second Life using the platform's vast array of tools to the fullest.

MadPea's globally dispersed team operates as if they are working out of a joint because the persistent universe of SL allows them to do just that: scripters from Holland manipulate game mechanics with 3D modelers from the United States in real-time while designers from Germany, France and the UK test game flow on their new work-in-progress action game "Unia", disproving assumptions that only consoles can handle intense game-play, high-end graphics and epic storylines."

Various SL10B Places

The SL10B goes on, with the residents having hundreds of exhibits to look at, and sometimes interact with. The Newser has had a little time to look at them, and less to write about them. So which ones did we find that deserve a look?

SL10B Preparations: Flying over the Sims

Gemma Cleanslate has been busy at work as a volunteer for the SL10B staff, helping to get exhibitors to their plots and taking care of any problems. The work has been busy, but she gets to see the new builds come up.

SL10B Open to Exhibitors

Yesterday on Sunday May 26, the sims for the SL10B celebration were open to those whom would be setting up the exhibits, or helping out to. All day begining at Noon SL time, exhibitors IMed the SL10B group asking to be made part of the new exhibition group so they could teleport over to their plots. Since applications were closed on May 20th, the exhibitors began getting their notifications in the email. This includes Second Life Newser, which got it's notification a few days ago.

The Newser's plot is in the SL10B Astonish sim, the northeast corner of the event grounds. Like the others, it was 1024 square meters (32x32) with a 269 prim capacity and a 175 ft height limit.

Each exhibitor got a "Cake Slice," with a few notecards and things, made to resemble a slice of cake with the words "It All Starts With a Cube," a quote from Philip Linden.

Among the contents were "Exhibitor" tags to be worn by avatars. The title for exhibitors in their new group was "SL10B Exhibitionist," which got a few chuckles in the group chat.

Residents were asked to drop something on the sim to let everyone know the plot had been claimed. For the SL Newser's plot, there was one object that would tell everyone for sure whose plot it was.

A wider view of this corner of the SL10B grounds. A few other plots had already been claimed as well. While some just had a cake slice dropped, others had at least something set up on the plot.

A couple exhibitors looked like they already were set up for show.

It's still three weeks until the SL10B event begins, so there's still plenty of time for the exhibitors to set up their builds. Including the SL Newser, which will soon have something else in place of "The Hat." Stay tuned for more updates.

Behind the Scenes of SL9B

Among the volunteers at the SL9B event is Gemma Cleanslate. At 10AM Monday she and the others, including Crap Mariner aka the "Prim Reaper" (shown in the picture here), were busy with the masses of exhibitors asking to be in the group set up for them. But before that they had a chance to relax in the calm before the storm
