At The SLB: Volunteer Party at The Golden Palm

 

While the Second Life Birthday is in it's last week, there are still things to do. This includes some impromptu parties, if you can spot them. at 4:30 PM SL time on Saturday July 11, I noticed an event at The Golden Palm in SLB Mesmerize. DJ Samum (Samiraa Adderstein) was the one playing the tunes. It turned out to be part of a "Volunteer Party" that went on from 10 AM SL time to some time after 8PM with a fireworks show. 

 

Be sure to keep an eye on other activities, such as the Golden Ticket Giveaway, of which the last day is tomorrow.

SLB23B Open To Applications For Volunteer Staff

 

Last week on April 14, Linden Lab announced they were accepting applications by residents wanting to be volunteer staff for the Second Life 23rd Birthday celebrations, or SL23B. 

 

 

We’re looking for volunteers to help bring the celebration to life. SL23B volunteers play an important role in welcoming visitors, assisting with events, and helping guests explore the birthday regions.

We’re seeking Residents with strong people skills, patience, and enthusiasm for sharing the best of Second Life with others. Volunteers help answer questions, guide visitors through the celebration regions, and support the many activities happening throughout the event.

If you enjoy helping others and want to be part of the team that makes SL23B run smoothly, we encourage you to submit a volunteer application ....

 

Those interested in submitting an application need to do so through this Google doc (here).  Besides being courteous, you need to keep your appearance appropriate for a General-audience sim, as well as wearing the group tag and team shirt. You must commit to shifts two hours long and be available for at least a minimum total of eight hours for the event, longer totals very much preferred. And volunteers *must* attend a pre-event training session, with those not showing up removed from the group. And as these are strictly volunteer positions, no compensation in Linden dollars will be offered. 

 

Volunteer applications need to be submitted by Monday May 18.  This is the same date as exhibitors and performers. The information for those wanting to take part in the Shop and Hop is currently pending. 

 

The SL23B will take place from Thursday June 18 to July 19.  The theme this year is The Golden Age of Hollywood.

Gemma Cleanslate has been busy at the Second Life Twentieth Birthday celebrations. She had volunteered to be one of the greeters, and spent much time greeting people, as well as offering help and directions on things such as the hunt and sweepstakes. But she still had some time to check out some events and places.

A Few More Days To Sign Up For The SL20B

 

For those interested in signing up for the Second Life Birthday celebrations, your time is running out.  Those wanting to be performers, exhibitors, and general staff volunteers have only until Sunday May 14 to sign up. After that, you'll have to wait another year. Those merchants interested in signing up for the Shop and Hop also have until May 14.

EOTB: Applications For SL20B Exhibitors And Volunteers Now Being Accepted, Adult-Rated and Multiple Exhibits An Option

 

 

 For those looking to have an exhibit in the upcoming Second Life Birthday, or want to be one of the volunteer staff, now's your chance. Yesterday on Monday April 3, Linden Lab announced they were accepting applications for exhibitors and volunteers for the SL20B.

This year’s Birthday theme is Our Fantastic Future. The cornerstone of this idea is what we would define as eco-futurism including sustainability, a focus on our environment, and the next generation of our world. Some might call this science fiction, but what is science fiction except a dream for a possible future? In Second Life we build worlds. Our worlds, our way. For SL20B, we invite you to show us your worlds of the future!

This year, exhibitors have several options that were not available before. For the first time ever, exhibitors will be able to have adult-rated themed displays. They can also have multiple exhibits, being able to bring one from a previous SLB back again. They can also have an exhibit whose theme is of something about Second Life's history. And there are now three categories of parcel sizes instead of two.

There are a few things to be aware of for this very special twentieth birthday celebration of Second Life. 

1. We will have Adult content exhibit regions for the first time this year!

2. We are offering LARGE parcels. They are 4096 plots with 1872LI allottments. 

3. You can have MULTIPLE exhibits! Have a favorite exhibit (or many) from the last nineteen Birthday celebrations? Bring it AND design a completely new exhibit for this year as well! Please fill out an application for each exhibit idea.

4. Birthday Reboots is an exhibit category focused on a second viewing of a favorite exhibit from a past SLB.

5. Second Life History is an exhibit category focused on sharing highlights of Second Life's past twenty years.

 

It should be noted that the adult-rated SL20B regions, or region, will be located separately away from the rest of the SLB sims (presumably to keep underage residents from panning around to see them).

 

To apply to be an SL20B exhibitor, one needs to fill out an application on Google doc (here). If you want a water parcel or a medium or large parcel, you will need to explain why. As before, applying does not guarantee a parcel, and there are a limited amount of spaces (and likely more people applying as this is a key anniversary). Commercial exhibits are prohibited (a store or merchant can have an exhibit built, but the commercial activities will be limited to the Shop and Hop that will be going on at the time), and political & hateful themes are prohibited. And once a parcel is set, do not expect to be able to have it moved on request. Any questions can be brought to a Mole coordinator, but the Moles have the final say on exhibits.

 

For those interested in being part of the volunteer staff, fill out this Google-doc (here). Volunteers are asked to post which times they are available to work, what type of body their avatar is (for custom-made volunteer shirts), and what positions they're interested it. It is to be understood that volunteers are expected to be helpful and courteous, and will not get paid (other than the shirt).

Like SL20B performers, exhibitors and volunteers have until May 14th to apply (those applying to be part of the Music Fest have until April 9, a few days from now). The SL20B lasts from June 22 to July 11.

"Tail Sale" at The Happy Vixen

 

 The Happy Vixen Beach Club is having a "Tail Sale." What is a tail sale? It can be compared to a flea market, in which volunteers put themselves up for bid offering activities such as drawing or building, or perhaps offer themselves up for a date with someone from the opposite sex. Volunteers get a cut of the winning bid, with the rest going for the upkeep of the club. Grease Coakes explained what can go on at one in this article several years ago.

Those interested in volunteering can fill out a notecard one can get at the large sign at the club and send it to Brandi Streusel. The sale will end on Friday, Aug 26, at 9pm SLT.

SL17B Volunteer Staff Now Open For Applications

For those of you waiting to be one of the volunteers for the Second Life Birthday, good news. A few days ago, Linden Lab announced they were accepting applications to be part of the volunteer staff for the SL17B.

Do you love Second Life? Do you love to party? Do you love to help? Join the SL17B Volunteer staff and you can do all three!  

We’re looking for volunteers to help people celebrate at the upcoming 17th annual Second Life birthday celebration (SL17B), held June 19-July 10. We are seeking Residents with great people skills and a love and excitement for Second Life to help us make SL17B a huge success! If you like the idea of promoting Second Life in a positive way to thousands of people in a  celebratory atmosphere, we welcome you ...

Those wanting to be volunteers are asked to fill out and send an online application (link). People have until May 18 to sign up.

The notice also had reminders that the Lab was also accepting applications for performers and exhibitors for the SL17B, and applications for the Music Fest auditions.

SL16B Applications Now Open, "We Are Excited To Return to Being More Involved" Says Linden Lab

Last Friday, Linden Lab announced on the official blog that applications for the Second Life Sixteenth Birthday Celebration, the SL16B, were now being accepted. They also announced that they would "return to being more involved in the organization of all the events."

As we blogged earlier this month (Announcing “SL16B” - Second Life’s Sweet Sixteen!) SL16B is coming this summer - and part of the celebration means we will be opening applications for Volunteers, Exhibitors and Performers. This year, we are excited to return to being more involved in the organization of all the events. In addition to the official Music Fests, costume parties,  and Shopping events, of the last few years, we’re also returning to our roots and participating more in the development and planning of the main SLB celebration.

Except for the SL3B, Linden Lab ran the first eight Second Life Birthday events. Then on April 2012, they announced they would not be organizing one that year. It was up to the residents to organize one, and eventually a team led by Doc Gascoigne did. "The Birthday" was saved. Although the Lab would slowly get a little involved with the Music Fest and a shopping event, Doc's team would continue organizing the main event up to the SL15B. The Newser would declare them "Persons of the Year" for 2018.

Mary and Joseph Near the End of their Journey

Christmas traditions usually have Old World origins. But there is one that started in Mexico and has been spreading elsewhere: Posada. Figures representing Mary and Joseph are hosted in a different home in a town every night, and their journey to another home is marked with a parade and ceremony. This tradition has recently come to Second Life. Klaus Bereznyak recently talked to
Hunny Spiritweaver, the woman whom volunteered to coordinate the handovers of the two figures from place to place.

Scenes From One Billion Rising

On Tuesday February 14, many residents were at the Isle of View's "Hug a Linden/Dunk a Linden" or other Valentines Day themed happenings. But the event that most likely got the largest attendance was not a romance-themed one, but one that was part of a worldwide demonstration against violence on women and in support of women's rights globally: the One Billion Rising. Gemma Cleanslate was one of the volunteers for the event. Bixyl Shuftan dropped by briefly and took a few pictures of his own.

One Billion Rising in Second Life

A wonderful place to be on Valentines Day in Second Life is at the One Billion Rising Event. This is the 5th year of the event in our virtual world which coincides with the real-life event held all over the world on that day. “The Rising continues as a demand to end ALL forms of exploitation of women and girls.”

“The Second Life event will feature a four-region stage where 200 people can come together to dance, surrounded by an area of art installations, an arena for poetry and dramatic productions, and informational exhibits. A variety of performers will play over the 24-hour period and poetry and dramatic events will be held at different times, enabling people all over the world to attend this virtual event no matter their timezone. The regions will have a General maturity rating to allow all residents an opportunity to participate. Pictures are welcome on the event’s Flickr group.”

 

The artists who exhibit always do a wonderful job with their installations and I am looking forward to seeing them and to the great parties on the stages. 

 

I stopped over at the offices of the OBR to pick up my t shirt. 

Saturday I hope to participate in the filming of the new "Break the Chain video. It will be my third film working with all the other dancers .  I will be greeting again this year so will see you there.

Interview With Marianne McCann

Deaflegacy recently interviewed Marianne McCann. Best known for helping to organize the activities in Bay City, Marianne has also been involved in major events across the grid such as the Second Life Birthday and Burn2. Deaflegacy had a number of questions for the noted child avatar.

LadySlipper Constantine Passes Away

For a number of years in Second Life, LadySlipper Constantine has been active in One Billion Rising, Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education, and Second Life Birthday events, but has been best known for her role as a member of Burn2 and it's DRUM group. On Saturday September 17, she passed away from cancer. The news was announced on "The Lamplighters" blog the following day.

With a heavy heart we share news about a much-loved Elder, Lamplighter, Fire Dancer and longtime Burner, Ladyslipper Constantine. Yesterday the 17th of September, after a valiant fight against cancer, she passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. She will be dreadfully missed, but we shall treasure our memories of this deeply passionate Burner. She takes a bit of our Lamplighter fire with her into the next life.
 

On Sunday morning as word got around, there was an impromptu gathering of residents at the Cape Serenity Library in Virtual Ability. Gentle Heron and Any1 Gynoid were among those there. "It is times like these that the most articulate among us struggle for words to explain our feelings," Gentle spoke, "But sitting together, we share those feelings even without words."
 
"She had lots of animals," Îsabel (alysabelle) spoke of LadySlipper, "she loved the critters, and she would make the sim seasonal when it was time. ... I felt she was like a virtual mom to me. She gave me courage. ... I have taken all I learn here and applied to my own real life."

"I also worked DRUM with her," Dream Wrexan told, "We were part of a Wednesday/Sunday circle together. She was my building and performance mentor. She loved to build as others were saying.
The breadth of her influence is amazing."

LadySlipper Constantine and I first became friends when we were both Burning Life Members. We were Rangers together for several years for the event. She was a wonderful person, kind but firm, and loads of fun. LS, as she came to be called in recent years worked with me also in the Second Life Birthday events where again we shared many good times and laughs. Her main passion in Second Life was The Drum, a  percussion group made up of deaf people that performs at many events. It is with great sorrow to many and to me to hear that she passed away after a short illness . She will be sorely missed . My heart goes out to her real-life family. Bixyl did an interview with her last year at my request. To me she is and will always be Lady. Our last conversation in June when she was already ill.

"Welcome Home"

We are so excited! Planning for the Big Burn we've all been waiting for is now getting well underway. As is often our custom, we follow the theme that Burning Man announces, and this year it is "Da Vinci's Workshop."  You can read the full description of the theme as written by Larry Harvey and Stuart Mangrum at Burning Man's Website.

We had a poster contest and the posters were all so good that four winners were selected rather than just one, shown below. We will use all four posters for distributing the news inworld and online.

The plot sale opened Sunday the 17th of July and plots are being reserved. Plottery and Juried Art camp applications are coming in. It’s really going to happen! Support BURN2 and reserve YOUR plot! At the plots for the exhibits for the Second Life Birthday, the inspections are done, and all that needs to be done are minor tweaks before the sims are officially opened on Sunday at Noon. SL12B Applications Deadline Extended to Monday May 18

Originally, those applying for applications to be exhibitors, performers, or volunteers for the SL12B had until Wednesday May 13. It was announced on the SL12B blog and inworld group that the time has been extended to next Monday May 18.

Many of you have IMed us saying you need more time Captain. We heard you!!! We will extend all applications till Monday May 18. More time to plan your build, where you want to volunteer, your DJ set, your auditorium presentation, what songs to sing for your performance.

Volunteering For The Expo

The Christmas Expo continues in Second Life, already having raised a large amount of Lindens. Among the volunteers for the fundraiser is Second Life's Gemma Cleanslate, whom can be encountered on it's streets as one of the "elves."
