Windows 10 Gets Another Year of Support to October 2027

 

 A number of you likely remember the grumbling last year when Microsoft officially ended support for WIndows 10. Because of it's suggested hardware, many users were reluctant to update to Windows 11 as peak performance would mean paying money for upgrades, or getting a new computer. Some reluctantly made the upgrade, wondering if it would mean problems. Others hesitated, as Windows 10 was running just fine on their machine.

 

According to an article by Ars Technica, those insisting on staying on Windows 10 can rest a little easier, at least for another year.  As "Windows 11 usage had only barely surpassed Windows 10 when support ended," they went ahead and extended support another year, to October 2026. But as of now, with a quarter of active computers still on Windows 10, apparently the company has quietly extended support a second year, to October 12, 2027.

 

So those with older machines have a little more time.

Fantasy Faire Extended, Weekend Schedule

 

 Good news for fans of the Fantasy Faire. The time the sims will remain up has been extended.

 

Thanks to the generosity of Lindens past and present as well as the cumulative goodwill of Fairelanders everywhere, Junction's gate will remain open to welcome shoppers, questers and explorers through the end of day Wednesday, May 13. Remember to check out the World Builders Wootable Collection located on the Fairechylde, and the Silent Auction before it closes at 1pm SLT on Saturday, May 9.
 

It should be noted that the time of official events has not been extended. But there is more time to shop around, enjoy the beauty of the sims, *maybe* enjoy an impromptu event or two, and of course finish the Fairelands Quest.

Breaking News: SL20B Extended

 

For those who wanted a few more days to look around the SL20B area, good news. It was just announced in the Second Life Birthday group that the sims for the event will be staying up until Sunday July 16.

Patch has generously said that the SL20B regions and the Shop and Hop will stay open thru Sunday, July 16. that means there are still seven more days to enjoy SL20B experience! Have fun! And yes parties at the exhibits are allowed!

The news was delivered by Missy Mole (Mischievous Mole), who would add, "I know rumors were floating around since the Meet the Moles talk but I wanted to make sure it was confirmed before we made an announcement."

 

The news was greeted with cheers in the Birthday group, one person musing the "Shop and Hop" being extended would be bad news to her bank account.

 

Once again, the Second Life Birthday sims, including those for the Shop and Hop, will be up until Sunday July 16.

Burn ONe's Time Extended Another Month

 

When we wrote about the Burn ONe area in the Highup sim earlier this month, the land had been paid for until the end of July. Last night, it was announced that the time the area will be up was extended for another month.

Baker Beach to Remain OPEN through August!

Thanks to Nance who has added 2 weeks to the tier and Mia who will add an additional 2 weeks this coming Friday.

At this time please direguard the Break Camp & LNT notice sent earlier today.

Plans are being made for a celebration at the place this weekend, as of now either one three-day event or three smaller events.

SL19B Extended To Sunday July 10

 

For those who can't get enough of the Second Life Birthday, or whose real-life kept them from checking out the sims, some good news. In the Second Life Birthday Exhibitor group, Missy Mole (Mischievous Mole) announced that the time the sims would remain open was extended to Sunday July 10.

The regions will be open thru Sunday, July 10. You can come in and pick up your exhibits next Monday and Tuesday, July 11-12. We hope everyone had a great experience building for the Birthday. I loved seeing all the creativity that you brought to the exhibits! Time to start planning for next year :)

The ending date of the Shop and Hop, which was Sunday July 10 all along, remains unchanged.

It's unknown why Linden Lab waited until the last day of the scheduled time before making the announcement, or why there was no announcement in the regular Second Life Birthday group.  But in any event, we have a few extra days to enjoy the exhibits and do shopping hunts. And of course impromptu parties.

*Update* Just before 8 AM SL time, Linden Lab finally announced the news in the main SL Birthday group, Missy Mole giving the news.

Good news! If you haven't finished exploring the 225 exhibits that are part of the Birthday estate, you still have time! The Birthday region will remain accessible thru Sunday, July 10 to explore. Jump on a pod tour. It's a great way to cruise through the exhibits!

And don't forget to pick up all the gifts, both at the Tapestry of Time and at the SL19B Shop and Hop which is also open thru July 10.

Fantasy Faire Update: "There Is Not a Two Week Extension"

 
Yesterday was Patch Linden's Jail and Bail event, in which people got to bid on various things such as a name change and Linden Home. But one thing many wanted was an extension for the Fairelands sims beyond the end of the Fantasy Faire, of which the last daily events are Sunday May 8. Patch was open to it, and when plenty of Lindens came in, Patch thought it was simple enough to arrange for the sims to stay up longer, the two weeks that was being asked for.

As it turns out, the sims are staying up slightly beyond the technical end of the Faire, but not longer than planned. This was posted in the Fantasy Faire group chat.

Fantasy (FantasyFaire Resident): Just a reminder: The Faire's programming calendar will end on Sunday, May 8. The regions themselves will remain open to visitors until Wednesday evening at which point the regions will be closed to the public. There was a miscommunication between myself and Patch. He offered a very generous extension that I had to turn down. I am grateful to Patch for his love and support of the Faire. Please blame me for leading him to believe that offering additional days would be alright.

So it appears the Fairelands sims will be up a little longer. But only for two days, not two weeks.

Breaking News: Fantasy Faire Extended To May 12

 
Good news for fans of the Fantasy Faire. While it's not official yet, the Newser was present at today's Jail and Bail involving Patch Linden. After hearing calls to extend the ending date of the Fantasy Fair, Patch offered to do so after a few more donations had been made. Finally, enough had been done so.

A Look At The Peale

Last weekend, The Peale officially opened. It is a virtual representation of the real life Peal Center in Baltimore, the oldest museum in America. With the Pandemic keeping away from the museum in real life, the virtual wing allows it to show exhibitions otherwise not accessible. Baltimore's Peale Museum Opening Virtual Wing in Second Life

Linden Lab has just announced that a real-life museum is opening a "virtual extension" in Second Life. This is the Peale Center in Baltimore, the oldest museum in the country.

The Peale in Baltimore, which is housed in the first purpose-built museum building in the United States, has extended its reach into the virtual world known as Second Life. While the current pandemic may prevent many people from visiting the Peale in person, this ambitious new project allows virtual visitors to explore the 1814 museum building online and attend curated exhibits and interactive events safely from the comfort of their homes.

“It has been thrilling to develop this new experience of the country’s oldest museum building in Second Life,” says Dr. Nancy Proctor, Executive Director of the Peale. “Thanks to the amazing work of Linden Lab and Virtual Ability, Inc., we are now able to welcome a huge new community to the Peale, and share its rich history as well as the authentic stories and creativity of Baltimore with the largest and oldest virtual world on the Internet.”

Current highlights of the virtual museum include the 3D interactive Peale Museum building and the virtual world exhibition, “Redefine/ABLE: Challenging Inaccessibility.” Exhibits and events will change regularly, and include playful and surprising elements inspired by the Peale’s and Baltimore’s history and stories – like a virtual mastodon, recalling the mastodons famously excavated in 1801 and exhibited by the Peale family in their museums in Philadelphia and Baltimore!

“This has been an excellent partnership opportunity for us,” says Virtual Ability, Inc. President Alice Krueger. “The staff of the Peale are strongly committed to accessibility, as you can see by their choice of a first exhibition in Second Life. Virtual Ability is happy to assist them to create an accessible experience in their virtual museum.”

The museum was developed in partnership with Linden Lab, maker of Second Life, who developed extensive interior spaces for a 3D model of the Peale Museum building that was originally created by the Imaging Research Center at UMBC for its online map of Baltimore ca. 1815. Over time the interior of the virtual Peale Museum building will grow to include more galleries, both extant in the physical world and inspired by the Peale’s programming and partners, making the Peale in Second Life a creative hybrid of the “real” and the imaginary. The Internet’s largest virtual world has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity as more people seek out safe and fun social interactions online during the pandemic.

“We are pleased to see The Peale bring an extension of its museum and exhibits to Second Life,” says Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg. “The virtual world is the perfect home for museums that are seeking a way to extend their reach to a global audience.”

The museum will also be the focus of Strawberry Linden's "Lab Gab" today at 11 AM SL time, viewable on Youtube.  Strawberry will interview Nancy Proctor (NancyEProctor Resident) of the Peale Center and Eme Capalini of Virtual Ability.

The Peale Museum in Second Life will officially open tomorrow, Saturday August 15 at 8 AM SL time.

RFL Season Total Passes $300K USD, Relay Sims Get Extension

Wednesday June 10 saw a certain tradition of the Relay sims following the Relay Weekend, the "Flood Party." While it was going on, there were two announcements. Shortly after 6PM SL time, it was revealed that the total amount of cash raised had passed 75 million Lindens, or $300,000 US dollars.

Just as the flood party was getting started, word was getting around about another development. While it wasn't officially announced, it appears the Lindens will let the sims stay up a little longer. Unfortunately, a few teams had already taken down their camps. So if you still want to see the sights, take care of it now.

There are still a few Relay events left. The Volunteer Banquet is at Saturday June 13 at 10 AM. And the following week is the Royal Ascot at Saturday June 20 at 1 PM. And after that, the Relay Wrap-Up.

Team Sunbeamer's "Bid Me Pantsless" Extended to May 18

Remember the "Bid Me Pantsless" event announced on April 30? It had been scheduled to end May 4. But partially because one of the participants couldn't be there that night, the time for the bidding has been extended. You now have until May 18 to "Bid Rita to the Dogs," "Bid Liksa Goat," and "Bid Bixyl Pantsless." The totals will be added up at 8PM after the party at Club Cutlass where the kiosks are.

Fantasy Faire Sims Up One More Week

Officially, The Fantasy Faire ended last night. Fortunately, the sims will still be up for another week. So if you couldn't make it over, or if the lag was just too much, you have several more days to see the sims and shop around. The quest has been extended as well. So if you need a few more days to solve the House of Garland Quest, you're getting them.

Maybe you have heard the rumor that in an attempt to bribe their way out of Jail, the Lindens promised us some extra days for the Faire. Absolutely TRUE! I confirmed with the Lindens earlier today (April 27) that the Fairelands will remain open to us until May 7!

So have more fun at the Faire, though don't forget about the Relaystock that will be taking place this weekend, or other Relay events such as tonight's "Rave for Relay" by Team Sunbeamers.

University of Western Australia Sims Saved, For Now

Last month, the manager of the University of Western Australia sims announced that four of their five sims would be retired following budget cuts at the real-life university that owns them. One, UWA Virlantis, would be handed to another owner. Three others, UWA, UWA Winthrop, and WASP Land, would be abandoned and allowed to vanish. Only the University of WA sim would remain after October 9.

Thankfully, the sims are still up. JayJay Zifanwe announced the sims have been given a reprieve, thanks in part to people writing to the university. None of the sims will be vanishing, although UWA Virlantis is still being handed to Dr Phylis Johnson (Sonicity Fitzroy).

Following a lot of work in the background at UWA in RL. The UWA presence in SL has been extended through 31st July 2017. Thank you to the many who have written in to UWA central providing support as well as the many who have worked to preserve a lot of the art and grounds in film. Thanks especially to the Desinging Worlds team with AviewTV and TreetTV for their incredible work on their tribute programme, and to Secret Rage (AKA Vee Marie) for her excellent videos documenting nearly everything on the 4 UWA sims. See links below. 4 of the 5 sims will remain part of the UWA cluster, and the 5th SIM (UWA Virtlantis) is being taken over by the University of San Jose & Sonicity Fitzroy, who have been occupying it for the last couple of years.

When sims are so often gone too soon, it's good news to hear about some given a new lease on life.

SL12B Applications Deadline Extended to Monday May 18

Originally, those applying for applications to be exhibitors, performers, or volunteers for the SL12B had until Wednesday May 13. It was announced on the SL12B blog and inworld group that the time has been extended to next Monday May 18.

Many of you have IMed us saying you need more time Captain. We heard you!!! We will extend all applications till Monday May 18. More time to plan your build, where you want to volunteer, your DJ set, your auditorium presentation, what songs to sing for your performance.

Burn2 Extended Another Week

Some good news for fans of the Burn2 festival, especially those whom might have been unable to come by last week. The event's been extended another week.

Have you had as much fun as I have? What an amazing BURN! We are having so much fun that we have decided not to close! We will keep the Playa open another week. We are going to NOT have formal crazy performance schedules, but camps can host events on their own plot, Center camp, or the stages. We will keep audio streams going and setup an open microphone system. Let’s do some fun things, be relaxed and have fun! You may even see Zombies on the Playa Wednesday the 31st!

We will push our BURNS out until next Saturday and Sunday, so this all fits in with that! I know you were all ready to see The Man and Temple Burn, but you can wait, cantcha? Times will remain the same-  4 AM, Noon and 8 PM Saturday, November 3rd for the Man and Sunday November 4th for the Temple.

Yours truly dropped in at the Burn last week just in time to see a tour being done by EmCee Widget. "Welcome to Center Camp," he greeted me, "We are broadcasting to Burning Man Headquarters in San Francisico right now. Everyone is getting at tour at Headquarters." Besides EmCee, Burning Man has two other represenatives, M2Danger Ranger and Dusty Udal (formerly Dusty Linden). The tour went to The Man, the Temple, where a few people stopped to meditate, and at least two clubs having events.

Gemma Cleanslate has been too busy with Ranger duties to write much, though others have been keeping an eye on the event. Daniel Voyager has continued to write about the festival, in addition to posting a number of pictures on his Flickr.
