Game Review: Wasteland Survival

As busy as I am with the paper, I do take a little time for games. One that got my attention recently was "Wasteland Survival" on Steam. As the title suggests, the objective is to try to survive in a land laid waste to by disaster. With a dog as your companion, you scavenge for resources while fighting off zombies, animals, and the occasional NPC survivor. The price of the game: Free. So is the game worth playing?

Zombies at Bellisseria

Dropping by southeast Bellisseria the other day, I noticed a group of people. Getting closer, I noticed these were not regular people, but the walking dead: zombies! One muttered, "Brrrrraaiiiinnnzzzzzzz......" But they were dancing in place, not making any aggressive moves.

I then heard why they were hesitating as one muttered, "Uhoh here comes a mole,  we busted." "Eat the mole!" one desired. "Moley brrrrraaaains" Another groaned. But one zombie had no wish for a mole dinner, "Nooo! Moles is nice ,they builds our homes!!!"

Deciding to make discretion the better part of valor, I left the situation to Sleepy Mole and skidadled away from the scene, feeling the blue dot on the map could handle a few zombies.

The Drax Files: World Makers "Episode 47: Mad World"

(Click here if the video fails to play)

From Draxtor Despress on October 8, "Halloween holds a special place in many people’s hearts. Dressing up in scary, funny and or weird ways [Drax once went trick/treating as Mitt Romney with a binder full of scantily clad Barbie dolls and was briefly detained by local police in California…] Even though it is a very American holiday, Kiana Writer from MadPea Games loved everything around Halloween when growing up in Finland. Especially the scary parts! She and her team brought her sensibilities and imagination into Second Life with a year-round celebration in form of a massive amusement park called 'MadWorld': lots of games, rides, role-play, special events and prices await the SL resident who dares to enter…. 'Halloween used to be much scarier when I grow up' she says, 'but we can relive these childhood memories in Second Life everyday!' Needless to say that everything that MadPea offers in MadWorld is completely custom built and scripted for Second Life and can be enjoyed as the chosen avatar embodiment. Case in point: Drax went ghost hunting - in the rain - with his beloved slider shoes…

"A very special thanks as always to our background actors and gracious sim owners / event organizers [including but not limited to BCreative Wilde, Gaius Tripsa, Quiggles78, Threshin Bartnett, Sangi Phaeton, Thalia Lupindo, Raceyy, LadyRose Writer, TheOnlyNoMad] and of course production designer, location and logistics wrangler Marianne McCann: can you spot her in this one? Hint: she looks quite pale in a couple of scenes …. "

Various Halloween Happenings

Second Life has no shortage of Halloween fun. There's a number of haunted houses, woods, and other locations around. But suppose you're looking for a party or some other public activity?

If you want to party with the wacky neighbors of the community the Newser office makes it's home in, the Sunweavers are having their Halloween Party at Club Cutlass. Club owner Jenni Greenfield takes to the stage to spin the scary tunes tonight in what promises to be a spook-tacular event.

6-8 PM Sunweaver Space (176, 62, 125)

Steelhead has it's own Halloween party tonight at 7PM. But that is not all. Halloween is the last day of the "Go Fish!" hunt.

At participating locations there are dead fish lying about, it is your job to find them before they stink up the place. Some are easy to find, other's you'll need therapy after you do find it. ... please get them before they really rot.

Among the places taking part in the hunt is the "Malarkey Manor" also known as "Toby's House. Located at Steelhead Harborside (100/114/24), one can drop by here to get a notecard with a list of the locations where one can find the dead fish. The Malarkey Manor has two, with the clues being, "survive to get your TROPHY" and "dig much deeper."

The Creations Dance Club, of the Creations for Parkinson's Charity group, is having a Halloween event that seems a bit more light and a bit less dark, the "Hallow Eve of Light, Happiness, and Love."

Be prepared to be amazed! You and your friends are invited to a Unique Alternative Halloween Celebration Dance. Friday, October 31st 6-8 pm SLT Let's come together to create an uplifting positive evening filled with Light, Happiness and Love. At our New Dance Club at the Etheric Center of Living Light. encourage costumes & clothing to enhance the positive energy of this evening. 12 fabulous free gifts!

The dance is from 6-8PM at Creations Park (124, 118, 4055

The World War Two combat roleplay of New Bastogne has been getting into the Halloween antics with the invasion of zombie soldiers. How combatants began raising from the dead is unknown, some say an experiment by Nazi scientists gone horribly awry, others say a curse by a powerful witch furious with the war. Moderator Vickster Khun described the event in a notice.

Today, and tomorrow (Halloween), WWII players are permitted to play as zombies. They will be using a device that gives them greater HP than normal infantry, and will have a melee attack only. Any player using this device should be dressed as a zombie and play on Team 3. Zombies are authorized only between the hours of 5PM and 12 Midnight, SLT (PDT). On another note, you are asked to engage zombies with infantry weapons only. Have fun!

The Zombie AO made those wearing it walk about in a stumbling, shuffling, often bent over manner. Jessicabelle Dayafter suggested those hunting the zombies on the hours they come out might be allowed some additions on their outfits that would normally make them out-of-uniform, such as a melee fighter's shoulder guard.

Those whom aren't yet in the combat roleplay, but are interested in taking part can head to read about the rules and get some starter gear at New Bastogne (117/156/37). Please take heed of the rules and listen to the moderators.

Luskwood, which last week celebrated their 11th anniversary, is whooping it up again with their Halloween event. The Big Tree is set to have some spooky scary fun.

That's right everyone!  We're going to be haunted yet again.  Feel free to start prepping those wonderful costumes for tomorrow the tunes will rise from the grave. Expect lots of our DJ fun and feel free to let your friends know to come on down then!

The haunted fun is listed as officially starting at 7PM, but people are likely to drop by in costume at the social area much before

All this, and more awaits those who brave the darkness in Second Life on Halloween.

Trick or Treat.

Madpea Carnival to End With "Demolition Party"

The Madpea games area will be shutting down it's Carnival soon, but before it vanishes there will be one last event there, a "Demolition Party" with music, a raffle, and zombies, lots and lots of zombies.

After 7 months of entertaining SL residents with evil thrills, rides and games, the MadPea Carneval is closing down. While we are sad to see it go, we’re also excited to have the space for creating new! To celebrate the Carneval, we are arranging a huge Demolition party on May 31st starting at 12pm SLT!

Burn2 Extended Another Week

Some good news for fans of the Burn2 festival, especially those whom might have been unable to come by last week. The event's been extended another week.

Have you had as much fun as I have? What an amazing BURN! We are having so much fun that we have decided not to close! We will keep the Playa open another week. We are going to NOT have formal crazy performance schedules, but camps can host events on their own plot, Center camp, or the stages. We will keep audio streams going and setup an open microphone system. Let’s do some fun things, be relaxed and have fun! You may even see Zombies on the Playa Wednesday the 31st!

We will push our BURNS out until next Saturday and Sunday, so this all fits in with that! I know you were all ready to see The Man and Temple Burn, but you can wait, cantcha? Times will remain the same-  4 AM, Noon and 8 PM Saturday, November 3rd for the Man and Sunday November 4th for the Temple.

Thank you all again for making this the most fun most memorable BURN  ever!

Yours truly dropped in at the Burn last week just in time to see a tour being done by EmCee Widget. "Welcome to Center Camp," he greeted me, "We are broadcasting to Burning Man Headquarters in San Francisico right now. Everyone is getting at tour at Headquarters." Besides EmCee, Burning Man has two other represenatives, M2Danger Ranger and Dusty Udal (formerly Dusty Linden). The tour went to The Man, the Temple, where a few people stopped to meditate, and at least two clubs having events.

Gemma Cleanslate has been too busy with Ranger duties to write much, though others have been keeping an eye on the event. Daniel Voyager has continued to write about the festival, in addition to posting a number of pictures on his Flickr.

Be sure to keep an eye on the Burn2 Schedule for events.

Eye on the Blog: “Beginner’s Easy Guide” to Zombie Games

With the popularity of zombies and zombie games, it’s no surprise this Halloween season that Linden Lab did a “Beginner’s Easy Guide” to zombie games on the Grid. They highlighted three different games with three levels of complexity, “select the one that matches how much time you have to kill (bad pun intended).” They gave “The Dead Zone” as an example of a Zombie shoot-em-up that was fairly simple for those with less than an hour to play, join the group, grab the free gun, then go into mouselook and start shooting.

For those whom wanted something a little deeper for several hours of gaming fun, the Lab mentioned “Urban Zombie,” an abandoned city filled with “haunted alleys and dark passageways” where the undead lie in wait. This game is a little more detailed, involving getting and wearing a HUD, which keeps track of your score, as well as experience points, quests, and missions. There’s also a free gun available. After that, you can head out into the streets. For more serious players, there is armor and other items up for sale.

For the truly serious zombie slayers, aka the “zombie maniacs” as the blog called them, there were places “that will immerse you deeper into the combat gameplay.” The Linden article described game in this third category, “Bloodbath and Beyond,” which could be described as a Medieval Fantasy MORPG. In this sim, “you fight zombies, skeletons and elves, complete quests for prizes and rewards, drink potions to rejuvenate, and much more. Play with friends and even level up.“

Before playing, residents are asked to spend about 20 minutes or so reading the rules, background story, and other information. Then join the group, wear an appropriate outfit (the Linden blog showed a picture of a revealing Fantasy outfit for women fighters), then get the starter pack with a HUD and a longbow & sword (no guns allowed in the Medieval area). The HUD also keeps track of your score, and the highest ones are publicly displayed, so along with the guts comes glory.

Although the blog article showed a variety of action games in Second Life, not everyone was overly impressed. Hamlet Au, although he called it “a good resource guide,” he commented it “reminds me how much Second Life’s Development tools need to improve.” Simple games from Facebook could be downloaded in less than a minute, he argued, and more detailed video games could be downloaded via “Steam” in as little as five minutes, “Hopefully this is just the kind of time-consuming pain that Linden Lab CEO and game development veteran Rod Humble is now working hard to improve.”

Despite the lag and the bugs, these are still good games, and an example of the fun one can have on the Grid. But, there is room for improvement.

The Terror of Mulberry Horror

SamanthaS Nightfire recently explored a Halloween haunt that was definitely not kiddie stuff, but "horror with a capital 'H'." "Forget the usual 'Boo!' kiddy stuff. As you desperately make your way through the dark, you'll have that sickening feeling that the child murderers, torturers and demons really are after you. You'll face your darkest nightmares. One question remains... will you make it out alive?"

Read about this haunt of haunts in Places.
