SLife And Times: "Cleanup Week"

While starting up the Firestorm browser in the past few days, some residents might have noticed a "Cleanup Week" message. So just what is "Cleanup Week?" Well, fortunately there was a link to an entry in the Second Life wiki about it.

Clean up your inventory sometime in Cleanup Week! Sometime during the first week in November, take 10 minutes to an hour cleaning up your inventory. Make sure that you purge that trash and put things in nice lil' folders!

According to the entry, the tradition was started in the Teen Grid by an Alpha Zaius. He suggested making the occasion a social event, "get together with friends and everyone call talk about the crap they have in their inventory."

Personally, I take an occasional moment to clean things out a little, usually old notecards and landmarks. It can last from five minutes to five seconds as sometimes just as I think about my inventory and take a moment to clean up, I get messaged and forget about it.

Video: "I Spent a Week In a VR Headset, Here's What Happened"

(Click here is the video does not play)

From Disrupt on March 7, "On February 20th, 2019 we put a guy in a headset for 168 hours. Hosted by: https://twitter.com/jakwilmot." For one week, Jak Wilmont was constantly wearing VR headsets, save the couple seconds it took to change from one to another.  While the video doesn't mention Second Life, it does involve virtual worlds.

His response when the challenge is finally over, "Oh my gosh, the graphics are so good."

Press Release: Bay City Fashion Week

The Bay City mainland community is hosting a select number of the top vintage, mid-century fashion designers for a Fashion Week from April 20-29 in the Bay City Fairgrounds in North Channel.

The designers featured were chosen based on their designs fitting within Bay City's theme: the American urban experience, between 1940 and 1965, perhaps best typified by Chicago circa 1950 and marked by a distinct deco influence.
Invited designers include Schadenfreude, Sonatta Morales, Misha Kerang Designs, FIN, Robin (Sojourner) Wood, Eclectica, Volstead, 1-800-BETTIES, Ingenue, Purplemoon Creations, Rhapsody, Vita Bella, Delicate Sensibilities, and Pure Poison.
Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab™ and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life™ and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest Bay city group, and home to most Residents of Bay City.

Burn2 Extended Another Week

Some good news for fans of the Burn2 festival, especially those whom might have been unable to come by last week. The event's been extended another week.

Have you had as much fun as I have? What an amazing BURN! We are having so much fun that we have decided not to close! We will keep the Playa open another week. We are going to NOT have formal crazy performance schedules, but camps can host events on their own plot, Center camp, or the stages. We will keep audio streams going and setup an open microphone system. Let’s do some fun things, be relaxed and have fun! You may even see Zombies on the Playa Wednesday the 31st!

We will push our BURNS out until next Saturday and Sunday, so this all fits in with that! I know you were all ready to see The Man and Temple Burn, but you can wait, cantcha? Times will remain the same-  4 AM, Noon and 8 PM Saturday, November 3rd for the Man and Sunday November 4th for the Temple.

Thank you all again for making this the most fun most memorable BURN  ever!

Yours truly dropped in at the Burn last week just in time to see a tour being done by EmCee Widget. "Welcome to Center Camp," he greeted me, "We are broadcasting to Burning Man Headquarters in San Francisico right now. Everyone is getting at tour at Headquarters." Besides EmCee, Burning Man has two other represenatives, M2Danger Ranger and Dusty Udal (formerly Dusty Linden). The tour went to The Man, the Temple, where a few people stopped to meditate, and at least two clubs having events.

Gemma Cleanslate has been too busy with Ranger duties to write much, though others have been keeping an eye on the event. Daniel Voyager has continued to write about the festival, in addition to posting a number of pictures on his Flickr.

Be sure to keep an eye on the Burn2 Schedule for events.

Runescape's Free Trial Membership

Before playing World of Warcraft and Second Life, I had been a player in Runescape. Probably the most popular of the MMOs, it's gone a long way since the days when only a few thousand were on at once when I gave it a try in 2003. Currently, it boasts 10 million active accounts. It's been called a "freemium" or "velvet rope" game as you need to pay a subscription to get the full membership, which gets you access to more than half the map, more bank space, being able to use certain items, more quests, etc. Someone called the free version a good starting MMO for anyone new to this genere of games.

Recently, I got a notice in the mail about free two week trial periods for full memberships available. So a little curious about the game I used to spend so much time in, I signed up and went back in. Going about, I noticed after about five years, quite a bit was still the same, and a few things had changed. For one, the world now had a name: Gielinor. Before then, it had simply been called "Runescape" like the game.

One place I went to was probably a good one for those who hadn't played for a while (like me) was Burthorpe, just west of the area where free players are limited to. There, a number of miniquests reintroduced me to the skills, as well as introducing me to a new one: Summoning (the other introduced since I was away was Dungeoneering). There was also the baby troll pet I got from one of the smaller quests.

The two week free memberships are available until September 7th. For anyone interested, head to http://www.runescape.com/. For help, two hint sites I'd found useful in the past are Rune HQ and Tip.it.

*Addition* Oh, the thieving training quest in Taverly, south of Burthorpe, take it, it's hilarious.
