Bits of SL Life And Times

 

As I wrote earlier, yours truly can be very busy in real life sometimes. So sometimes there's very little time to write. And so things I would like to put my pen down to get postponed, sometimes again and again. So here's a few things that I couldn't find the time to write down earlier, such as cool Halloween looks, an alt experience, and a wrestling match.

SLife And Times: "Cleanup Week"

 

While starting up the Firestorm browser in the past few days, some residents might have noticed a "Cleanup Week" message. So just what is "Cleanup Week?" Well, fortunately there was a link to an entry in the Second Life wiki about it. 

Clean up your inventory sometime in Cleanup Week! Sometime during the first week in November, take 10 minutes to an hour cleaning up your inventory. Make sure that you purge that trash and put things in nice lil' folders!

 

According to the entry, the tradition was started in the Teen Grid by an Alpha Zaius. He suggested making the occasion a social event, "get together with friends and everyone call talk about the crap they have in their inventory." 

 

Personally, I take an occasional moment to clean things out a little, usually old notecards and landmarks. It can last from five minutes to five seconds as sometimes just as I think about my inventory and take a moment to clean up, I get messaged and forget about it.

SLife And Times: Two Sides of Banned For Being Furry

You go about Second Life in a type of avatar that you're quite proud of and helps define you, at least in the virtual world. One day, you get an invitation to a place you haven't heard about. You have time, as well as some nice clothes to wear, so you figure you might as well give it a try. But once there, you're told to change who you are, or leave. This is the situation one of our readers faced. So how should one respond? While the Newser has written about the subject before, this time we got in touch with someone from the venue in question. As it turned out, the other side did express some sympathy, but naturally the two people had quite different viewpoints.

My Expirences As A Hostess

Maybe you've been going to a club for a while that's really cool, and you feel like becoming part of it's staff but can't DJ. One position clubs often have a need for is that of host/hostess, someone who greets people as they come in, and other duties. Our new writer Angel Fencer (Ender Leven) recently got a job as one at a club. So what is it like and how did she end up there?

"Good Neighbor Commandments" Obelisks on Mainland

The Mainland gets something of a bad rap among Second Life residents, and not without reason. The land is cheap and there's lots of sims to explore. But there are the ban lines that put your casually going about to a halt. And there are the security orbs that give you just a few seconds before teleporting you back to your home location.

So it got my attention when Lia (Female Winslet) told me about some obelisks she found by the road on the Mainland. Dropping by one at Route 10 at Tangna (65/53/77), ir was marked "Good Neighbor Commandments for Second Life Mainland" on the bottom. On each of the four sides, there were suggestions for better Second Life living, written in the style of the Ten Commandments.

Thou shalt not set thy security orb to teleport people without at least a one minute warning, lest thou beest a jerk.

Thou shalt not block roads or sea lanes with thy objects, nor shall ye set ban lines, for they are the suck.

Thou shall allow build and run scripts on thy land and use autoreturn to keep it neat and tidy, for it is thy friend.

Thou shall beget privacy walls, screens, and shrubbery around thy land which please the eye of thy neighbor as they do thyself.

The obelisks were made by Abnor Mole. Besides the one at Route 10, I saw a few more at Marybank (55/211/51), Hae An (165/120/50), and Lippert (104/214/179). Lia told me of a few other locations I hadn't checked. So will these black stones get more people to clean up their acts, or rather their land, a bit? Hopefully they will, and we can go about Mainland a little longer before running into another yellow barrier.

SLife and Times: Banned For Looking Odd

If you've been in Second Life for a while, you've seen avatars of all kinds. Some make an effort to stand out from the crowd. Others try to fit in. And then, there are those odd-looking avatars that look like the person didn't know how to design a look well. They're often newbies, though some are older. While often, these avatars are simply new, it's also the look favored by some griefers and trolls. When one such avatar found himself banned from a club before he took a few steps inside, he blogged about it. The result was a debate on just how should such avatars be treated.

Voting Ends Today at 5PM For Avi Choice Nominees

For those who haven't yet voted for the nominees in the Avi Choice Awards, you have until 5PM SL time today to do so. At that time, no more will be accepted, and the votes will be totaled. Among the nominees elegible for an award is the Second Life Newser, which can be found in "The Arts" category. So if you haven't yet, please click the link and vote for us in the "Favorite Magazine, Newspaper or Periodical" poll on the top.

It is suggested that readers look further down "The Arts," as well as "Fashion" and "SL Life"  to see what else they could vote for. For instance, the Relay for Life and a number of groups or people connected to it have also been nominated for awards, such as T-1, Whip, and Krypton Radio, Wildstar Beaumont, and others.

The Avi Choice Awards will be presented on December 4 at 1PM SL time in a show hosted by Trader Whiplash and Nuala Maracas. The sim will be closed to the general public and be limited to the up to 85 people who purchase tickets to the event. The tickets cost 400L, and are non-refundable should the person be unable to attend.

Second Life Newser Nominated By Avi Choice Awards For Favorite Newspaper

A month and a half ago, Avi Choice started accepting submissions for nominations for their Last Avi Choice Awards. Last night, they informed the Newser that it had been chosen as one of the nominees. The newsletter had been nominated for "Favorite Magazine, Newspaper or Periodical."

Congratulations!  You have been nominated for an Avi Choice Award!  For the past few weeks Second Life residents have been submitting nominations, for the SLife, Fashion ad Arts categories, via the Avi Choice website.  After a process of consolidation, you are a finalist and eligible for voting.  http://avichoiceawards.com

"Favorite Magazine, Newspaper or Periodical" falls into Avi Choice's category "The Arts." To vote for us, just (Click here) and go to the first part and click next to Second Life Newser.

There are many other selections to vote for such as favorite radio station, favorite DJ, favorite store, favorite annual event, etc. So you may want to browse through the whole list, as well as "Fashion" and "SLife."  Voting ends on Nov. 28th at 5PM SL time. Voting is limited to one vote per avatar.

This year's Avi Choice Awards are planned to be the final one after taking place every year for several years. This final show will happen on Dec 4, 2016 at 1PM SL time.

The Newser has been nominated twice before for the Avi Choice awards, in 2012, and 2015.

Nominations Sought For Last Avi Choice Awards

The Avi Choice Awards, who brand themselves as "the premier annual awards presentation recognizing the people and talent of SL’s™ amazing creations, chosen and voted on by SL™ residents," are once again accepting submissions. However, this will be the final time the awards will be done, at least in their current form.

As announced during last year’s Avi Choice Fashion Awards, we are retiring the Awards, as we know them.  We are talking about continuing our mission forward in some way ...  But for now.. we have an announcement to make! On December 4th, 2016 we will host one more Avi Choice Awards!  The GRAND FINALE!  This one will take us back to the early days of our Awards when we had one program a year celebrating as many recipients in all three genre’s as we could.

 There will be some special mentions and moments as we all say our goodbyes to what has become an amazing part of Second Life history.  This program will be the conclusion of the Avi Choice Awards, as we know them.  It’s been a good run and we could not have done it without support and cooperation and input from the amazing virtual community known as Second Life.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The Awards are in three categories: Fashion, The Arts, and SLife.

Among the categories for Fashion are clothing, avatar, avatar accessories, and jewelry stores and makers.

The categories of The Arts include "Favorite Magazine, Newspaper, or Periodical," Favorite Radio Station, Favorite Male DJ, Favorite Female DJ, Favorite Streamed Music Club, Favorite Machinima Artist, and more.

For SLife, which has the most selections, categorizes include Favorite Furniture Maker, Favorite Sim to Explore, Favorite Place to Take a Date, Favorite Shopping Region, Favorite Roleplay Sim, Favorite Second Life Blog or Website, and Favorite Second Life Blogger.

Residents have until Wednesday October 12 to cast their votes. Going through the guidelines, there doesn't seem to be any rules against voting for someone or something in multiple categories.

The Second Life Newser fits the "Favorite Magazine, Newspaper, or Periodical" in "The Arts."  But the several sections qualify for "Favorite Second Life Blog or Website" in "SL Life." Bixyl Shuftan and Becly "Sha" Shamen qualify for votes in "Favorite Second Life Blogger," also in SL Life. The Newser has been nominated twice in the Avi Choice Awards, but has yet to win first place in getting an award.

"Conflict Resolution"

It's been stated before that the biggest source of troubles for people is, other people. No matter how much you try to get along, it seems that sooner or later you run afoul of someone. In her newest article, MajikVixen talks about how to deal with the other parties in disputes and a few tips in resolving them.

"Protest" At Raglan Shire

Throughout the month of May, the tiny community of Raglan Shire held it's "ArtWalk," one of Second Life's most well known yearly art exhibitions, attracting talent from all over the Grid. The pictures and photographs are set up on "hedges" for the event. But what happens to the hedges once the exhibition is over?

 Hearing on Facebook that there was some activity going on at the Shire, I logged on and teleported over. I soon found the activity. There were two tinies with protest signs, "Save our Hedgies," and "Hedges 4 Hedgies!" Facing them was a third tiny with a line of tiny bots behind him, dressed in ancient Greek helmets, and carrying a third sign, "Move over hedges, the Greeks are coming."

I walked over just as the conversation went, "Will there be waffles cooked fresh at the Ool?" "But this is still a fun little protest (big grin)." I then greeted the tinies, "Heh, what's this about a protest?" One of the tinies looked at me with puppy-dog eyes, "*sniffles* Can we save a few hedges?" The other explained "we're just haveing a fun little protest about saving the hedges." They then chanted a "Save our hedgies" gesture. And indeed the bulk of the hedges that should have been up were taken down, with just a few still up.

Raglan Shire does have a Facebook page, and checking that out there were more pictures of protesting, some with more tinies with signs, as well as one with the bot army. Somehow, the sight of a line of tinies in Greek armor doesn't exactly inspire the same feeling as a line of angry Spartans in Greek armor.

Going back later, I didn't see any of the remaining hedges. What I did notice was a Greek temple. It seems for Raglan the Greeks were coming after all. As for what hijinks the tinies of the Shire will be into next, time will tell.

Note: From what I read, there never was a serious protest. This was done in the name of fun.

With years of experience of making games in Second Life, surely they would have something interesting to write about. As it turned out, Ozymandius did find something, but not quite what he expected.
