Announcement: This Saturday at The Science Circle - "Understanding Science: Earth and the Solar System"

"Understanding Science: Earth and the Solar System"

Saturday April 17

10AM to 11 AM

From the bizarre world of the very small, the subatomic particles that make up everything we know, we turn our attention to the macro world, namely our sun and the objects which orbit it. In this case, one of the small particles within this ‘atom,’ just one among a billion other star systems that comprise our galaxy, itself only one of billions of other galaxies in our known universe, is the only home we have, the ‘third rock from the sun’ we call Earth.

I do not think humans really appreciated how special the Earth is until we were able to travel beyond it. I remember during the Apollo 8 mission, the first that time humans left Earth’s gravity, how the contrast of the ‘blue marble’ in space rising over the drab, lifeless moon brought a stark realization to everyone who witnessed it that we live on a fragile, ‘goldilocks’ planet with just the right conditions to make the surface habitable for life as we know it. It was this realization that inspired Earth Day in 1970 and the movements since to preserve what we have here for future generations.

During the 1960’s, space exploration seemed part of the Space Race and Arms Race, a product of the Cold War. After a few missions to the moon, humans have not ventured outside Earth’s orbit. However, robotic spacecraft have not only helped us to better understand our home planet but have also probed deep into space and the worlds beyond ours to try to understand our place in the universe, to answer the questions of how unique our planet is, whether there may be life elsewhere, and to understand how it all began.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in space exploration. In just this last year there have been three missions to Mars, and several more to our Moon, the Sun, and the smaller bodies of the solar system, by a handful of nations, not just the Cold War rivals. There are also several commercial entities planning serious efforts to exploit the resources on the moon and beyond, and cooperative efforts to put a space station around the Moon, with a base on the surface to follow.

Join me as we explore how we ventured out beyond our home and the amazing discoveries we have made about our solar system and its inhabitants and the world beyond, some exciting recent and current plans for further exploration, and what all this might mean for our future.

Burn2 Conception: Communal Earth

The Burn2 Conception, the spinoff event of the successful Burn2 festival, is taking place this weekend. At Burning Man - Deep Hole, there are a number of exhibits and a number of music events. The theme of the event, "Communal Earth," to look at issues related to the Earth. Marcel Mosswood was there, and wrote about the event.

Press Release: Burn2 Conception - Communal Earth

Conception 2019: Communal Earth
Opening 5:00pm SLT, Friday 19 July 2019
BURN2, Deep Hole

Communal Earth: Theme for Burn2’s Conception Event

At Conception we look back to the roots of our regional in SL, reaching back to Burning Man. How the years have flown by!

Our past event themes often relate to the Earth – Fertility, Balance. Our virtual Regional is comprised of Burners from across the world and all of us are concerned about the damage to the planet, and the realisation that the cause of it is us. Recovery from the damage must also begin with us. And so the community’s choice of theme for this next event on Deep Hole will be Communal Earth.

What is this theme about? It’s a concept around the communal effort needed to remember the origin of Earth and for everyone on the planet to preserve and heal it. We remember our roots, the first stirrings of life, and how we got from there to here, and recognise the impact our existence has had on our mother Earth. There is no magic bullet, no single solution to solve all the Earth’s problems. Therefore, it is on all of us, each in our different ways that we can do, to find and apply healing. In the process, we will see that we are all in this together.

Lamplighters will help to open the event with a walk-on to lead everyone from the Welcome Area to the main stage. All are invited to join us as we walk!

We’ve got Greeters getting their gift packs ready, Fashionistas making their plans, and a variety of interesting activities in various stages of building under way.

Artists and performers are invited to sign up for FREE plots and time slots! Signups are now open. All signups will be first come, first served. Read the information on the pages before you proceed to sign up.

Mark Your Calendar and SHARE the News!

We look forward to welcoming Home Burners and community, to explore the builds and enjoy the music that will fill the air over the playa the weekend of July 19-21. The BURN2 Calendar at http://www.burn2.org/calendar will fill up quickly as performers sign up and we get closer to the event opening on the 19th of July.

We will of course feature a burn. You will see an effigy called “Corporate Conglomerate for Consumerism and Conspicuous Consumption,” nicknamed CC4CCC. The giant CC4CCC Mascot is slated to burn!

BURN2 is the virtual extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It spreads Burning Culture and the Burning Man Ten Principles all year round.  We are one official regional of Burning Man among more than 100 first world Regional groups.

Cartoon of the Day: Why is Earth Feeling Ill

Taken at the Happy Vixen, with Lia in another of her avatars. So if Earth could think and feel like a person, what would make it feel sick? While some might think of the theory of Climate Change, other things come to mind.

Announcement: This Week At The Science Circle: “The Anthropocene Epoch”

    Saturday, May 19th

    "The Anthropocene Epoch“
By Phil Youngblood / Vic Michalak
    https://www.sciencecircle.org/events/2018-05-19/

    6 AM - 7 AM PDT
               and
    10 AM - 11 AM PDT

There is a saying that in English goes, “One cannot see the forest for the trees.” The traditional meaning is that it is difficult to see the bigger picture if you cannot see beyond your own little part in it. So it goes with seeing the bigger picture of global changes because we live on such a small part of our planet, and for such a relatively short time.

In March 2008, The Science Circle officially began its tradition of presentations of a variety of science topic with “The Anthropocene Epoch.” Ten years later, we will again explore the concept of geological epochs and evidence that humans have had such a significantly high impact on our planet that we are even now leaving evidence in rock and ice layers, in the atmosphere, and in the fossil record, that will be evident thousands and millions of years from now.

Some of the questions we will explore are: “How has the Earth changed over its history?”
“What caused those changes?” “What was the impact and how long did it last?” “How do we know?” “What natural changes are occurring right now on Earth?” “How are humans changing our planet and by how much?” “Are humans the only living things changing the Earth?” “What are the possible short and long-term consequences of our activities?” “Is there anything we can do about it?”

This is a subject that is having an impact on every one of us for centuries to come. Come join us!

Press Release: University of Hawaii, Institute for Astronomy Presents: "Laser Ranging at Haleakala"

By Dan O'Gara
Friday, May 29th at 9:30 PM PDT
Institute for Astronomy - U. Hawaii Astronomy Amphitheater

The use of lasers (laser ranging, or LR) to make precise measurements to natural and artificial Earth satellites is of immense value to geodesy. Information on the movement of Earth's tectonic plates, its gravity field, and its orientation in its orbit can all be accomplished with high accuracy via LR. More recently, LR is being used to produce precise orbits of Earth-sensing satellites that monitor changes in Earth's climate. This talk is about the history and future of LR at Haleakalā Observatories, how LR measurements are used by scientists, and the instrumentation used to make the measurements.
